X and Pearl released only nine months apart from each other, and each took the horror genre by storm in their own way. While X was closer to old school slasher movies with a lot of surprising thematic depth, Pearl is a very focused character study taking a look at the antagonist from the previous film, and it propelled Mia Goth into the stratosphere after it's release.

“Her father doesn’t represent anything specific-“ Her father is an exaggerated visual representation of how trapped Pearl feels, both by her family (he can’t be left alone, he can’t care for himself, someone needs to and without her mother that someone has to be Pearl,) and physically in her nothing town & isolated home (she might not be trapped in a wheelchair, but she feels just as trapped in that farmhouse.)

Howard saw combat in World War 1, which I don't think any society ever prepared the participants for. It was called "the war to end all wars" for a reason, so I suspect he had PTSD and the war broke him to the point where Pearl's actions were just a continuation of the horrors of the times.

from the very beginning of the movie, we see that Pearl hasn't been able to hide her dark side very well. Her mother, the projectionist, Misty... they all can easily see Pearl's dark side. That's why I think Howard is also aware of it, yet he still loves Pearl despite this.

I hate to say it, but I found Pearl incredibly relatable. That feeling that everyone always abandons you and you don’t know what you did wrong. That feeling that there’s something everyone else has that is missing from you. I dunno if I have some disorder or something but God, when she said “WHY ARE YOU LEAVING ME IF I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG?!! I THOUGHT YOU LIKED ME!!!” I felt that so hard. I’ve had so many friendships that either faded away or I ruined them by clinginess and overanalyzing everything with extreme anxiety. I’m not gonna stab people with pitchforks but I still found her really relatable and tragic. During that whole monologue at the end half of me wanted to run away and half of me wanted to give her a hug.

'x' was fun, but 'pearl' scared me to my core. there's nothing more horrifying for the human spirit than coming to terms with the fact that your youthful dreams of importance and relevance are DOA... especially within the wider context of the 'american dream' rhetoric of upward mobility in the states. when i saw pearl in theaters, i fucking SOBBED at the monologue. i was cheering for her to feed misty to theda the alligator! a modern horror ICON.

Why Howard stayed with Pearl is a very interesting conversation. As the film opens in 1918 Texas, WW1 was already happening. Remember the scene when Mitzy first paid a visit to the farm and she said to Pearl "he could've taken a deferment, but no." I spoke about this to my husband (big time history buff and Army veteran) and he said back then, war separates the men from the cowards. From what Mitzy described, Howard wanted to serve his country instead of being a safe little rich kid. Once we see Howard's reaction at the end of the scene, I conclude the following: 1. Howard has seen horror. Him coming home to dead bodies and Pearl standing there with a smile on her face would indicate that if she is ok with this horror, maybe he doesn't have to hide from her. PTSD was far from being diagnosed at the time. Plus I found it odd that he was walking into the house in full uniform with a smile on his face, as if what he had been through was similar to getting a glass of milk. 2. Marriage, back then, was a honor to uphold. Maybe he thought there was a chance to make Pearl better. If Howard was able to see this dark side of her, no sane man would marry her. Then again Pearl did say she was able to hide that dark side very well. 3. Pearl said in her monologue that Howard always wanted to spend his life at her farm. 4. What's interesting, also disturbing, was that in X, he kidnapped that bohemian guy in their basement and allowed Pearl to "fulfill her needs" because Howard was afraid to do so due his heart condition. Both Pearl and Howard were afraid to act on their marital duties because of old age: more in depth, Pearl not being physically desirable and Howard not being physically capable. This ties in to point 2: if you can't satisfy your wife, you are not a man of honor.
@No-nt3vj
@No-nt3vj 2 месяца назад
I do agree with most but not the second one considering pearl was never actually good at lying and even the director could clearly see right through her lies even her mother knew what was going on when pearl thought nobody was looking so Howard may always knew what pearl was actually like but because of his own feelings for war and not wanting to stay home and get a doctor's note he might've just seen pearls homocidel tendencies as normal.

Despite the awful things she does, the monologue towards the end makes it so hard to dislike her. As someone who has never been happy living where I’ve grown up, wanting desperately to be somewhere else and live a different life especially as a teenager, Pearl is such a sympathetic and understandable character. This movie was so well done and added so much context to X I can’t wait to see what happens in Maxxxine. Ti West and Mia Goth have created something very special with this series

youve never been manipulated by a sociopath who uses fake emotions to lure you in and make you do what they want out of guilt have you? she was killing and torturing animals long before that goose at the start of the movie. her mother says so. how do people keep looking past that, it happens right at the start and establishes her as evil basically from the beginning. the movie is just her losing control of it, not going crazy.
@PyroFortune
@PyroFortune 2 месяца назад
@@dpounder101don't know how your point dismisses the relatable side of Pearl's situation. I assumed her hard conditions on the farm and her morphine habit (taking her father's medicine at the theatre) also helped her spiral. If you don't sympathize with Pearl, good for you, but ask questions instead of going on stupid rants
@dpounder101
@dpounder101 2 месяца назад
@@PyroFortune her mother makes it very clear that she had been doing evil things to animals for a while before the movie even starts and thats why she was keeping such control over her. also, drug use doesnt make someone into a psychopath, not even meth or pcp, let alone an opiate. if someone does horrible shit on drugs it was always in them and the drug just lowered their inhibitions. this is most common with alcohol. the fact she would steal it from her sick father shows a lack of caring although obviously in those times you could just get more when it ran out without worrying about your prescription not being ready for a refill. another thing, that farm is gorgeous and except for the fact her father is incapable of functioning it should be a great place to grow up. its bright and beautiful for a reason. dont accuse me of going on stupid rants, as a neurodivergent person i know exactly how many people mistake sociopaths and psychopaths for good people only to get screwed and meanwhile we get the shit end of the stick with people assuming thats what we are because of social awkwardness. the whole take that she was a good person who lost it over the course of the movie and deserves sympathy is misguided and ignores a huge part of the movie. psychopaths are often well liked until others really get to know them more or they decide you are their victim. you people run away screaming from an autistic or schizotypal person right into the hands of sociopaths who use you and then you wonder why you never saw it coming. this movie gets rid of the whole "the awkward person is the one to watch out for" bullshit. psychopaths are very charming at first and its only after a while that you notice they are full of shit and have no real emotional depth. neurodivergents who are socially awkward, especially at first, are usually not the ones to worry about.

I like a theory that Mia Goth mentioned in a behind the scenes featurette from the Peal Bluray, that the projectionist is a figment of pearls imagination. As his character projects everything that Pearl wants, her sexual desires, and her ticket to getting away from the farm. He’s simply a projection of what Pearl wants. Yeah it’s very likely not true, but I like the concept.
@franklantic
@franklantic 3 месяца назад
It’s actually in the subtleties that I realized Mia Goth was so serious about Pearl. Like, she OWNED the role. So different from her character in X, even when she’s Pearl there too. Lol. But the bullying allegations, well, maybe fame is getting to her head?
@bananabrain364

Did anyone else see the projectionist as a guy that was juat using Pearl for sex? It seemed like he was just making all those promises of traveling the world to get her to stay the night with him. Showing her the stag film without her knowing what they were or her asking to see them REALLY weirded me out when i first saw the movie, and I realized he was a "big bad wolf" kind of guy.

I think the feeling she has towards the projectionist is also jelaousy when she was confessing her feelings to Mitsy (or Howard) she mentions how killing him and her mother felt really personal excluding her father. I think this can be linked to the fact earlier in said confession she also said that she's not smart or beautiful plain unlikable, she envies men like Howard and The Projectionist guy because they are naturally charming handsome and free.

Great video! I really enjoy your reading of the film. There was one point you said that gave it another viewpoint, and it was in why she killed Missy. I viewed this murder being the ONE killing that wasn’t completely selfish (in Pearl’s perspective). There seems to be no anger or frustration, which the other murders definitely contained. I think she killed Missy to correct her life, and like you said, her life IS reality. So in a way, she’s fixing her wrongdoings and committing herself to being Howard’s desired wife

Nah, people have to chill about this movie. It's fun and kinda camp, but it is surface-level and simple. It is not deep, it is not significant, it is not brilliant. It is character study 101 (at best) with a very good central performance, but maybe that's "perfect" to those who don't see many movies.

I mean, you are kinda right on the surface level and complicity, but even so, it represents a lot of different perspectives on the characters and how it relates to many people in the real world. So yes, it is simple as “you say,” but in my opinion I feel like that makes it even more chaotic and fun! 😊

I feel that the movie was insincere it was not funny, it was not innovative, and it was just another "female rage" movie! The movie was another way of humanizing "delusion of grandeur" and "self-destructive behavior"! In my brutal opinion Ruth was a blunt mother who says it how it is her "cruelty" was fabricated by Pearl due to Pearl being an arrogant fragile snob seeking praise for her "talent"! Pearl is a malignant narcissist who throws tantrums I mean this girl is so sensitive and hurt by another's criticism and honesty to the point of screaming bloody murder to get her way!
