Hi guys and thanks for stopping by! My name is Melissa and I have been a police officer for over 16 years now! I am currently a lieutenant in a large metropolitan police department and I created this video to discuss why people are disqualified in the police application process!
In this video, we will discuss some of the things that could disqualify you from the police application process, however you never know until you ask or try!
If you are interested in law enforcement, I urge you to apply. We are always in need of great people in this profession.

I really appreciate you making these videos. I applied to be an ECO but I now realize I won’t make it through. I regrettably listened to bad advice to lie about drug use on my application. I said no to any drug use on my F3, but I am a frequent medical marijuana user and I thought if I stopped using, I would pass the medical evaluation by the time I got to it and everything would be fine. I see now how dumb that was because I didn’t know about the CVSA asking those questions. I have been sent a conditional job offer but now knowing this I don’t see a point on going forward. I was really looking forward to possibly going into this position because I have always dreamed of helping people in trouble. I don’t want to give up, especially because after listening to your video, marijuana use is the one thing that would disqualify me (and deciding to lie about it 😞) The question I have now is if I withdraw from the application process now to save myself the shame, will I be disqualified from reapplying? How long is acceptable to not use marijuana?

I have no idea what an ECO is but if you have been recently using marijuana that is going to disqualify you from virtually all processes. I would encourage you to just not use it period. Even if it is legal where you are. Most agencies let you withdraw, you don’t have to tell them exactly why but they may push more to know why if you apply specifically with them again. Every agency has different standards for now long ago drug use has been, but if I had to guess, I would say years

Thank you for being so open about and honest about your experiences and helping other get into law enforcement. I’m currently a dispatcher and have seriously been thinking about becoming a police officer, probably for a little over a year now. I’m 26, but depending on exams (civil service) and the academy, I would probably be about 28-29 by the time I’m off FTO. Do you think that’s too late for a female? I want a family and have been so torn since I want to follow my passions while also being realistic. Thank you in advance 😊

Your videos have been so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make them. From your personal experience, what is likelihood of securing a position as a police officer with no formal college education or military experience? What could someone do to make themselves a more desirable candidate?

That depends a lot on the agency. For example, with my agency, that does not make a difference. We train everything our officers need to know. It could make an impact on a smaller agency though or one that has the ability to be more selective... I would sell yourself as a candidate though. Talk about your work or accomplishments in life to show you are a hard worker and committed...

It depends on the department. With mine, absolutely not. With smaller agencies, maybe? It would depend. That is why I recommend broadening out with your search and applications...💙

Yes, it would depend on the agency. For example, my agency doesn’t require you to have your license for a certain amount of time…

Hello Melissa, Maybe you can help me out. I watch a lot of bodycam arrest videos and I often hear double beep sound. It sounds something like a loud "Bziip Bziip" and its heard even when an officer is outside of her or his car. At first I thought it was incoming sms but I couldn't find anything similar on my iphone. Is it a radio or does this alert sound comes from bodycam itself?

Hello I am 44 years old and since I was 28 my wife and I were dedicated to full time Christian Ministry, preaching and teaching the Bible. Recently I drove a truck for a company for three months and I resigned because I didn’t like it and the salary was no good. So, could that be negative for my application form…??? Thank you

Typically they are looking for abrupt leaving. If you walked off the job, didn't show up one day, or did not give the advance notice your employer reqeusted. If those things were not done, I don't think you will have an issue.
