Most people who bounce their leg do it without thinking. It's a habit that can be hard to break. But why do people do it? In this video, we explore the reasons behind this common fidgeting behavior. The short answer that the experts won't tell you is: It is a response to unhealed trauma.
I sit down with a client about why he is bouncing his leg, how it's related to PTSD, and what those urges to move our body are really trying to tell us.

Pretty sure this isn't only related to trauma - it can also be a form of stimming (short for self-stimulatory behavior), especially in autistic people and people with ADHD. (but not only those, anyone can stim). Stimming can be used to self-comfort in stressful situations, but it can also occur when the person is experiencing a positive emotion such as joy or excitement. For others it also helps in concentration, such as during a test or some kind of recitation, because it physically grounds the person (similar to the use of prayer beads in buddhism or a rosary in catholicism). The cause/origin of a specific kind of behavior (such as leg bouncing/foot tapping) will not always be the same for everyone.

I bounce my leg almost 24/7 when I'm sitting.
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 3 года назад
As you can see from the video and all of the comments that is a sign of unhealed trauma. A suggestion would be to go to my website, www.thegreatnesssmovement.com, and user "resources," print out a "feelings list." Then when you sit, look through that list and discover what it is you are feeling, and then ask yourself where in your body are you feeling it? If you can't recognize it, force yourself to stop bouncing your leg. At that point, big feelings will surface and you will then feel them in your body. Then ask yourself, "when was the first time I felt this feeling as a child?" You will then be flooded with different painful memories from your childhood and for the first time, you will know what pain it is that you get to decide if you want to heal so that you can no longer be living in that constant fear and pain that your bouncing leg is trying to communicate to you that you are stuck in. If you decide you want to live without that pain and fear I would suggest you get my book as a first place to start helping that pain.
@JustCameronT

@@kennyweiss Could it possibly be an anxiety and stress issue? I'm nineteen and my parents just got a divorce last year, but before then, the effects of the toxic relationship between my parents caused me to be pretty stressed and confused growing up and I've suffered with a mild(it's gotten worse lately) anxiety issue for as long as I can remember... So that's been my guess about the knee bouncing.
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 3 года назад
@@JustCameronT Yes you are exactly right. All anxiety issues are caused by previous trauma that has never been released and healed. That is what anxiety is. The clinical definition of stress is fear. So yes, you are struggling with deep trauma issues going back "as far as you can remember" and your body is in a constant state of fear (stress) and anxiety from never being given the skills, tools and knowledge to over come the original trauma which is now being expressed as anxiety, fear and leg bouncing. If you want to begin the process of healing I suggest you watch all of my videos even if the title sounds like it has nothing to do with your condition because in each video you will learn a piece of the healing puzzle. I would also suggest you get a copy of my book, Your Journey To Success. It can be found on Amazon. To start, nearly every medical school is funded my the drug companies so they have a vested interest in all doctors being trained to believe that pills are the solution. Secondly, only a very few I believe it is less than 5 medical schools EVEN CONSIDER emotions as a source of health problems. Most schools the word "trauma" or the idea that emotional trauma plays a role in health isn't even mentioned once! That is completely insane when there are so many studies showing that our emotion dis regulation changes, DNA.....and is basically the single greatest driver of all health conditions. Whenever I sit down or I’m nervous my legs shake would that be from anxiety?
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 3 года назад
Yes and the cause of anxiety is fear/pain/trauma that has not been processed. Almost always moments from childhood. That is why none of the anxiety medications work. They only blunt and cover over the symptoms. To heal anxiety it requires emotional mastery which is what my skillset and expertise is non. From my book, to my videos to my online university and my individual coaching. Until that emotional pain is faced and overcome and new emotions are put in place, the anxiety/nervous leg will continue

Wow! You’re absolutely right on! It’s not Type A energy or ADHD. I was diagnosed with ADHD the beginning of this year by my therapist and started treatment. He also showed me how I was the scapegoat in an abusive, dysfunctional family I had been in denial about all my life. Prior to starting therapy I often nervously bounced my leg making me appear impatient, nervous & on edge to others I actually want to impress or engage with, but I couldn’t seem to stop or even notice until I got a negative reaction. I had an experience with my inner child one day, recalling myself in the hospital when I was 5, kicking & fighting so that 4 orderlies had to hold me down to give me my shots. Initially I was admitted for arm & leg paralysis, which was absolutely terrorizing to be that helpless, separated from my family, and tortured with needles. I felt this wild rage inside, I could feel myself biting, kicking, hitting, twisting & contorting my body to protect myself. While feeling these emotions my arms & legs began twitching & jerking, then as though a spirit left my body I let out a big sigh and crumbled into my chair in a fully relaxed state. I haven’t had that leg shaking since.

Everytime i sit next to someone they start bouncing their leg its getting mad annoying thinking if im making them uncomfortable
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 3 года назад
That sounds frustrating but let me give you some insight to help you with that. First of all, we NEVER make anyone feel anything. That is one of the biggest false truths out there that none of us have been taught. That we actually have the power to make a person feel something good or bad. Each person chooses how they think and feel about any person or situation. The belief that we have that power over people or that they have that power over us is something called codependence. In other words, we are giving up our own inherent power and "depending" on someone else to make us think or feel better. So when you start getting mad..... ask yourself, where in my body do I feel this anger? Then ask yourself, when was the first time I felt this feeling? Most likely you will have a memory from childhood when your parents, friends, teacher...sent the message that you were somehow bad, wrong, not enough. So in that moment what you are really experiencing is your own unhealed pain from your childhood. The person bouncing their leg is experiencing the exact same unhealed scenario. Each of you is choosing to have a thought/feeling based on your own pain from the past and therefore, the other person is never responsible for that. The secret is to make the choice to gain Emotional Mastery (all the things I teach) so that both people are no longer codependent but are now self empowered.

When we are raised by a person who lives in so much fear and superstition, their fear actually transfers into us as a child. It would be very normal for a child to develop a bouncing leg, knuckle cracking, finger nail biting or other ways to try and release the state fo fear the child (now adult) is carrying for that parent.

I never would have linked it to ptsd, I would have linked it to extreme anxiety P.s my grandad also used to bounce his knee, it could be partly genetic or maybe generational curse I dont always agree that people should dig out past trauma, I think its not worth it especially if you don't remember
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 3 года назад
I am always in support of people doing what they feel is best for them. If you don't want to heal the pain from the past you have every right to not do that. In regard to anxiety, I am not sure if you are aware of this but anxiety is caused by previous trauma that has never been healed. A person is perfectly fine and then they start having feelings/symptoms out of nowhere. Those feeling's of anxiety are repressed trauma and the body's way of screaming at the person to go heal them. So it could be said that being "anxious" is also a form of PTSD. As for genetics, there is a massive misunderstanding in the world about how genes work. The famed Dr Bruce Lipton discovered over 20 years ago that there are only 3 genes that if you are born with one of those three, you will definitely have that disease/illness/condition. Other than those 3 genes, all the others just mean that you have a "predisposition" for something, it does not mean that if you have that gene you are "predetermined" to have the illness, disease or condition. For the gene to activate, it requires an environmental trigger to turn the gene on. In the case of the bouncing leg, that means both you and your grandfather cope with your unhealed emotional trauma the same way. The "gene" to bounce your leg was passed down but it required trauma in both your lives for it to be activated. It also means that had your grandfather healed his trauma, he would have reshaped the gene and therefore, the family trait of avoiding healing trauma would not have been passed down. This is not meant to blame your grandfather, he was just doing what he was taught. For centuries we have all been taught to avoid healing our trauma and that is why the world is stuck in so much pain, disease and unhappiness. In addition, there is so much false information about how all of this works. It makes me sad that you have never been taught correctly how genes work or what anxiety is because the information you have allows you to stay stuck in pain. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. If we were to change this pattern and provide people with accurate information, it is my personal belief that the world and our lives would be a much happier, healthier and better place.

I don't necessarily think that it's always unhealed traumas. I believe it's a way of grounding mental/emotional energy, therefore releasing it from the system, and therefore no one understands why they do it because most of the time, people are not actually aware of how they feel or what they think, and if they don't ground often enough, it can also get worse and turn into brain fog and forgetfulness.

Unhealed traumas are locked in the subconscious, yes, and as a result, the average person is mostly unaware of why they feel what they feel, what triggers them, and what lessons they can learn from the reflection of themselves in their reality, including circumstances, people, places, and many forms of communication by spirit through symbology and numbers.
@scorpionmaiden
@scorpionmaiden 2 года назад
This is also why hypersensitives, including myself, are easily overwhelmed every where we go. We are simply hyper aware of what is being shown to us on a deeper level, what emotions we experience from it, and a sense of hopelessness of being unable to fix it (which is bad, because anything can happen and I believe this is the new wave of humans who are truly meant to save the planet due to their environmental intuition, aka we are quite literally the compasses that point to what needs to be fixed within our society and the planet as a whole). Sorry if that is overwhelming or sounds ridiculous to anyone, but I'm pretty sure this is the truth.
@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 2 года назад
I can appreciate your assumption. None of us would like to admit that we experience trauma. Our society gives that a black letter as though you’re somehow defective. It’s just not true, all of us have been traumatized in childhood. Every parent is perfectly imperfect, every parent makes mistakes and those mistakes leave wounds inside of us. That doesn’t make the child or the parent bad or defective it makes them both human. It’s part of the human experience. The problem comes when we deny the truth and try to come up with a different rationality so we don’t have to admit that to ourselves. I will try to say this as lovingly as I can. That’s what you’re trying to do. The scientific fact is that our brain gets stuck on overdrive because of an emotional event. That’s what causes the bouncing leg or biting fingernails… That’s also what causes the brain fog that you bring up. That’s dissociation and a detachment from the world because of the trauma. It’s a defense response so they don’t have to process the emotion. That’s why their leg is bouncing. Even though they’re trying to avoid the previous pain their body won’t allow them. It’s an alarm system telling the person. Hey, I know you would like this to be anything but emotional trauma, but I’m here to remind you that you were hurt and you need to take the time to heal your heart. Until we as a society start accepting truth about the pain we all experience, and stop coming up with rationalities because we fear the truth makes us bad or weak, all of us will continue to suffer in poor health and poor relationships. That’s my whole platform. I’m an advocate for truth and I’m here to help people admit to the truth. Because without truth there is no healing

Over 80% of people think they never experienced trauma in their childhood, yet all of us have. It is very common to have the false belief that our parents were perfect or just fine and did nothing that affected us. They are human so that belief is just not logical or possible. In addition, people only equate trauma with severe abuse but if a person's parents were divorced, that creates a severe abandonment and many other wounds. Another simple example of trauma is If a person has any secret from their parents or things they don't want their parents to know about them. Do you see what that means? If my parents ever found this out about me, they would reject me. Imagine how frightening that is? I inherently know that if I shared who I really was with my parents they would disapprove. That is SEVERE trauma The two people I should feel the safest with and the most accepted by I can never be safe with. As for anxiety, are you aware that what causes anxiety is previous unhealed trauma? We store all emotional trauma physically in our body so when a person feels anxious or has an anxiety attack it is the body's attempt to scream at us that we need to uncover and heal the source of the pain. The answer is to become educated on what trauma is? When we do that we discover our childhoods were filled with it. I have done several videos on how to heal from the past and in those videos you will learn a simple process that will unlock the door you have around your trauma. I also have free downloads on my website to guide you through the process. When I was in your place I made a choice to go become an expert and gain the knowledge, skills and tools to conquer all of this.If that is something you want I would suggest starting with my playlists on trauma and codependence and also subscribing to my website where I provide tons of free downloads and resources to help people. www.thegreatnessuniversity.com/

We all have trauma you can’t get through life without emotional trauma. Parents are human and perfectly imperfect they make hundreds of mistakes thousands of mistakes not because they’re bad parents but because they’re human. Sadly our culture minimizes and suppresses all of the trauma and think unless it’s something catastrophic nothing happened. Apparent being late for a game, a mother saying don’t bug me right now I’m cooking dinner… All of those things are traumatic. If there was a divorce of somebody had an addiction, health issues… The slightest imperfection leaves injuries and wounds emotional dysregulation and the proof of it is a body that shakes.

That is very common. Most people are completely unaware of how much trauma they have been through but a simple question proves it. DO you have any secrets from your parents? Everyone does. What that means is, if your parents found out who you truly were as a person, you feel they would not approve or they might get mad/reject you. That is UNBELIEVABLE trauma. So much so that you can't even feel it or recognize it. Also, if you have struggles in relationships or financially, those are more indications of unhealed trauma and the older a person gets, the worse all of those will get until they face the trauma. Just another clarification, "stress' is actually fear. that is the clinical definition of stress. The bouncing of the leg is a sign of tremendous fear and so much that you can't feel it.

@kennyweiss
@kennyweiss 2 года назад
Well if it’s ADHD, that’s a fear response. That’s a child who suffered “attention deficit.“ There was a lack of what is called attunement in childhood. Which means the parents were not consistently emotionally available and so the child experienced a lack of proper emotional attention. So just like the video points out, that part of the brain gets stuck on and the bouncing leg is just an attempt to release that unhealed fear from childhood

What would help the most is working with a professional to help you uncover and heal the underlying fear and pain that is causing the stress/fear. Rachel I’m so sad to hear that you’re struggling. What you’re experiencing is your fear system is overloaded and so one of the ways your body is trying to help you unload that fear is by bouncing your leg. You can think of it this way. You know how the thermostat in your house adjust the temperature? Well your internal thermostat is set really high right now and so you need to do some of the exercises to lower the thermostat and get it unstuck. I would suggest you go to my fear playlist and start watching those videos on how to do conquer fear and anxiety. There are exercises I will help you learn how to do breath work and many other things to help you lower your fear response. that usually creates dramatic improvement right away and that feeling of hopelessness will start to release. If the desperate feelings continue then I suggest you get to a hospital and get immediate help.

I don't know if this is always the case. My Garmin watch usually shows that my stress levels are really low. For some reason it showed that I was really stressed. I was thinking maybe dehydration because my pulse was high also and my mouth and skin seemed dry too. I drank some water, didn't help. Took some Himalayan salt, nope. Did some circular breathing and meditation. I went down a little finally after half the day of some sort of stress. I didn't have any obvious outside stressers so I figured it was due to something with my low electrolytes. Maybe low potassium because that's the only one I don't supplement. But for some reason I decided to fidget my legs because I know it calms me down. My stress level went half way down with breathing and fidgeting. After about 13 minutes, i was down to almost no sign of stress. Just fidgeting alone has kept my stress meter down for an hour so far. Will check right now too... Yep! It's at the lower end. Almost nothing. So, maybe it's not always about trauma. Maybe i have poor leg circulation and my body needed my legs to move to help circulate the blood. My type of circular breathing probably does the same thing. Adds air through out the body. I take in a breath for 4 counts, hold it for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts and empty my lungs and diaphragm of air and hold for 4 counts and repeat. Just concentrating on my breath. It helped a fourth of the meter length, but the leg twitching brought the needle to almost zero. Go figure 😊. ✌️😊🙏

@kennyweiss 3 года назад
Yes and if you research RLS it starts in childhood and is an attempt to soothe intolerable feelings which were the result of less than nurturing parenting or even abusive parenting or some sort of emotional disturbance in childhood. RLS will cease once those underlying traumatic feelings are addressed and overcome. The avoidance of dealing with the root cause, (pain in childhood) will allow it to persist.

Here is a new video I did that describes the neuroscience behind why we bounce our leg and what to do if a person wants to stop it. Hope it helps you. ;-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wo6o4yChtOI.html

Hello! Hoping you see this question: What about fixating on your bouncing leg? When i start doing it i mainly fixate on it and sometimes in my head tell myself to stop bouncing it but i'm just so fixated and literally have to make myself stop

What you are describing is an attempt to create a cognitive workaround. In other words, using thought/will to stop it. That is what most people try and it won't work because as you try to will yourself to stop with your thoughts, it will trigger new negative feelings. Most likely feelings of anger, shame or inadequacy because you can't "will" yourself to stop. What causes a bouncing leg is unhealed traumatic painful feelings from the past that have never been dealt with, they have been suppressed. Trying to think or will it to stop is just another attempt to suppress the emotion but it is also adding new painful emotions on top of the old ones. The answer is to stop trying to suppress your pain and start facing your pain. The way to do that is to become an expert in healing the pain from the past. You can do that by watching my videos, reading my book, taking my courses....or finding another expert to teach you how.

My narcissistic wife constantly (sometimes violently) shakes her leg in bed every night before she falls asleep. I asked her if she even noticed that she does it…she replied, “I don’t know, I guess it helps me fall asleep.” I knew it was more to it than that. Thanks Dr.
