I can confirm it works. I started on RU-vid 10yrs ago to create a retirement income. I’m now 63, 297k subs and 1 yr away from full retirement. I have been living off RU-vid for 2yrs to prove I’m ready. You missed one big income source. Memberships. Via Patreon, or RU-vid or similar. Your true fans will support you with monthly donations. You give them some behind the scenes info, share what’s going on. Connect with them at trade shows or meetups. They can become your biggest financial support and emotional support when views are down or revenue is down. Many become friends. Most of all, have fun with it.

My first RU-vid was started before the platform offered monitization. I didn't consider posting videos as a source of income until 2012. Today, after designing over 900 original tartan designs, and learning to weave, maybe I should share what I have learned over the years.
@Astrid-oq3kk
@Astrid-oq3kk 2 месяца назад
Please do (I'm saying this as an avid consumer of other maker/crafter niches). You can make added revenues by selling pdf versions of patterns in either your own website or Etsy (if ravelry has a weaving section, it can be linked there too, but apparently they take a big cut), same for all other kinds of documents (how to plan your project, how to estimate how much material you need for different projects, project planning for weaving projects, etc). To increase your reach, once you're confident enough in your youtube skills, don't hesitate to offer collaborations to people in adjoining niches (it can be as close as crocheters, knitters or going a bit further into the embroidery or sewing niche, the diy-ers, the renovation niches, interior design, general fashion, leather work niche, resin artists, etc)

I love this! Was it hard to learn how to connect everything up and then edit the videos later? When Rob said "Just sit down today and start recording", I couldn't help but laugh to myself because I'm already full of questions... do I use the rear camera or selfie camera? How can I connect it to my tablet or laptop so I can see what I'm filming? Where would I connect an external microphone? Does putting the phone in airplane mode keep it from all interruptions, but still allow recording? Lol! I guess I need the PRE-101 course. : ) Funny thing is, I have 5 grown kids and I LOVE all the major social media platforms, especially YT. But filming is completely foreign to me. 🤷‍♀️

@ProdigiaGames 2 месяца назад
@@HopeForUs5There are so many answers to your question that it can definitely be overwhelming! I'll give you the answers that I think will be quickest and easiest. Definitely use the rear camera, which does present a problem...how do you see yourself? You can either 1) frame someone else where you will be sitting and film on faith, or 2) put a mirror of some kind near the camera so you can see how the framing looks. You definitely can film in airplane mode, though many phones will block ringers and vibrations while filming is happening anyway. For a microphone, the easiest way would be to find one that uses a USB plug or, better yet, whatever your phone uses. If it is a USB plug, just make sure it comes with what's called an "On the Go" or OTG plug that converts from the generic plug to your phone's. If it doesn't, you can definitely order one. (You may need to go into settings in your camera app and specify to use an external microphone, but most seem to pick it up automatically) Also, a tripod with a phone attachment makes life much easier, along with either a table or stand for your microphone. That gives you 99% of what you need for a good way into your video journey. Going into editing is a little bit of a rabbit hole, just because it really depends on what you use, but all major phones have solutions that have you covered if you have a bit of time and patience to learn them. No need to get into complicated editing on the computer (though that's always an option down the road if you find you want to give it a try!) I definitely applaud your desire to look into it and I hope this helps you down that path! And remember, we think of video as technical but it's equally an art, so what you make will always be flavored by your personality and style. Best wishes!
@HopeForUs5

@ProdigiaGames OH my gosh. THANK YOU for taking the time to answer each of my questions!! It was truly wonderful of you to provide those answers... and I understood them! Lol! This was exactly what I needed. 😊 I will do a "dry run" (or 20! Lol!) this weekend. Thank you again so much - kind people make my heart smile. ❤️

In 2016 a friend and I started an online business. My friend suggested we have a YT channel to enhance the company's online presence. So I took a basic YT course we found on Udemy. @RobtheMaritimer

RU-vid continues to grow at a dizzying pace! Listening to Think Media's podcast last week, Sean Cannell said that a recent study estimated that the amount of money available in the content creators space will double over the next three years. If that's true, then however big you think RU-vid is now this estimate has it doubling in three years. That's means there's a TON of room for new content creators... and there's no better time to get in it than now! And I 100% agree with your friend... using youtube NOT as a money maker itself, but as a driver of traffic to your online business is one of the best strategies! Good luck with it!

Do it! Im only 34, so, im not over 40, but all i can say is go for it, but NEVER let the internet trolls get to you. People online can be garbage, but if you just delete, report and block. You can cultivate a great community. I have 33k on my costume TikTok. I only have 60 or so on here because it is a very new channel, but ive found a wonderful community here in the aquarist community. If you can share a bit of what you're doing, going through, making, or even feeling, let others live vicariously! I just stress that you do not make it a job, or the image of "perfect" that we see so often online. Be authenticly you.

Hubs and I just started TWO youtube channels over the weekend. He is 57. I'm 52. This economy is killing us (living in So. California) and our retirement is wiped out because we had to pull it out when Hubs lost his job. God is the force holding us together during these tough times. We recognize that we can build something valuable on youtube, so we've jumped in. One of the channels is a faith based channel to help people grow in their faith. It has been calling me for a while. Thanks for making this video. All the ideas about affiliate marketing and other products to sell in addition to ad revenue were great! Couldn’t agree more, Rob. I started my channel when my business went under during the pandemic. My daughter (who is over 45 so do the math on how old I must be…) and I run the channel together and make more money from it than we ever did from our bricks and mortar business. It is definitely time for grown-ups to start contributing in volume to the videos on RU-vid, to provide decent, accurate, interesting and well-made content which isn’t “all about me” unless “me” has something interesting to say. My channel is teaching older ladies to paint in watercolor and our 155k subs let us know every day how much they benefit from my content, as they long for gentle, supportive, undemanding company in this crazy world. Let’s get the world back on track, one 40+ year old creator at a time! Thanks for this video (and there is quite the movement on this topic on YT right now, yippee!)

I completely agree, Rob. I am 64, Danish, and have been an IT instructor for 39 years - 30 of those as self-employed. Many see age as an obstacle, but no one can be 25, have 15 years of experience, and (as a woman) have given birth to their children. I have a RU-vid channel where I share tips & tricks and teaching. I do the same in my membership club, on my blog, and on both of my websites. This allows me to share my knowledge, gain new clients, and continue working - despite my age.

RU-vid is so big and the algorithm is so good at presenting content to people that they actually want to see... it really doesn't matter how much "content for younger people" is out there.... because the people over 60 (just an example) will likely end up seeing content that people over 60 WANT to see. RU-vid ends up being very different for each and every person. Just something to think about! Best of luck to you :-)

Old gal here. Don’t have technology knowledge RE: cameras, lighting, editing (WTF? Wouldn’t bother since I feel like old people rants are HILARIOUS and IF I started doing videos I’d have to keep rants in. Come on! Right? Ya know. Sometimes you know you DO miss ‘yo mama’s’ cadence and lectures!), uploading and stuff. So, of course I’d go watch a ELI5 video on how to start a video conversation. Disclosure: when I am on YT and get a “short recommendation” and it’s a live stream I skip right away, typically because it’s an astrology tarot “your evil ex” is gonna get their due, or something. No interest. Of course, if someone were casting a spell about their evil ex? Maybe. Anyway. See how I’m just typing stupid, random thoughts? Yeah. Things like this. And believe you me, I type fast but I think even faster (plus… the autocorrect means I have to edit as I go so you readers have some semblance of understanding). Also… and this is a BIG issue for me. My little brain has looked and tried to do what’s suggested but my iPhone 8 camera doesn’t wanna work. IF you think you can help… maybe leave me a comment. Maybe create an ELI65+ idiot video for me (and others, of course, because, as gawd as my witness, I damn well can’t be the only one with this dilemma). TIA Peace and Blessings, folks. The bumpy ride is fun.

That is sad. I believe humans absolutely need face to face social interaction, relationship to and a sense of belonging. Humans survived and thrived only by joining together and that’s engrained into our dna. Loners (hermits) usually didn’t survive in the past and don’t usually do so well today. I don’t think watching videos and writing in their comment sections is equivalent or adequate. I recommend people join any kind of a group, team, or volunteer organization. If possible, see a therapist or join a therapy group if you have social anxiety. Remember, the more you isolate, the harder it becomes to fight back against the urge to isolate. Many support groups are free.

40? Try starting a channel at 68. I’ve been doing my channel for seniors to help them understand technology and stay safe online. It’s a real battle. Based on my research, only 50% of people over 60 even touch RU-vid, and those who do rarely log in or subscribe.

Great idea . Have you thought about going to senior center teaching free classes? This is VERY needed for elderly GREAT JOB

@@TenaRoberto Thanks, yes I’ve been looking into that. I’m also working on a free online course on how to spot and avoid scams. I’m hoping that seniors will be more likely to sign up for a course than to watch a bunch of various videos.

I only started really watching RU-vid about a year ago. I am 65. I joined RU-vid in 2015. Posted a few videos of my hair transition from red to natural silver and that’s about all I did on RU-vid until last year. I’ve been watching so many RU-vid vids and subscribe to so many people of all walks from life I don’t really ever watch TV anymore. I just pretty much use RU-vid for my Entertainment. so I just wanted to give you some encouragement I think people do watch RU-vid that are older. You just gotta find your niche.

68 here. I started, accidentally, offering a one off class on the basics of how to use an Android or Apple phone. This all do to, in one of my retail shops, having a customer say she wished her daughter could see an item in that shop she was almost sure she would want. She was holding the latest iphone. Short of it she only knew how to make n answer calls. Too nervous and confused to tap any of the icons - might meds it up was an expensive thing. Others overheard and there went 5 women out the door after assuring me they would show up that Sat an hour b4 opening for another question answering show and tell. 12 people came. That was 3 years ago. Still do once a month at a senior center. In my experience, I KNOW many older people over 50 even simply don't know what YTube IS! Nor the educational, news and entertainment resource it provides. Most seem to prefer n learn best by show n tell it gives them confidence and they then learn more quickly - overcoming a sort of mental block they seem to have that tech is too complicated for them to understand. And now with a.i.? Those that have used it that I have had in phone class as I call it, simply didnt really know the purpose of like and subscribe MEANS! The world the search bar opened up thrilled them. Free classes and making sure they know how to actualky use their computer and/or phone AND email then would generate future subscribers for a course imho. Have been using tech since punchcards and taking another round of classes in the a.i. tech I'm interested in. Why not engage Chatgpt for free how best to market to the age group and level of tech saaviness in that age group what you want to teach - or Perplexity which I think personally is better. It's free for that kind of inquiry. If they dont know about YTube a staple of the tech space, and how to use like button etc, it would seem to me your market will be narrower for those finding and able to see and use an online course - and a.i. Could help you easily with that suggestion wise. Don't give up on YT even if u do a mini course be sure to show your screen as you navigate what ever thing you are teaching them. For scams online, email screen with examples and phone, same. IMHO hope my 2cents helps and encourages you! There is definitely a huge market there. Have fun! 😊

I'm hearing that a lot... youtube ad revenue tends to be one of the smaller revenue streams for monetized channels. And thanks for pointing that out, that it only takes 1 affiliate link to get someone to Amazon... you'll then get credit for anything they buy once there :-) Thanks for the comments! :-)

I think an important point is that as people over 40, we're also more resilient, have more patience and will treat RU-vid as an actual job if that's what we want from it. And that coupled with life experience, is powerful. We respect the endeavour, rather than treating it like a game.

You've got this!! I promise you it gets easier after your first one! It's very liberating too once you post that first video. Remember this too... your first probably 20 videos you'll just be making for YOU. Yes you'll be posting them for the world to see, but they are your time to get better at making videos, talking on camera, etc. After 20 videos you will be much better at it and that's when more and more people will start watching. Fast forward a year or so and you may have thousands of subscribers, and none of them will be there because of your first video... they'll have seen your latest videos! Good luck with it!!

Hey, Rob. I found this channel by this video. I am 66 and am a colored pencil pet portrait artist. I have been thinking of starting a youtube channel for a few years now. I really want to share how art can be used for a calm and therapeutic exercise when your life is hectic or dealing with difficulties and how exciting it is when you are proud of your creation. Life is so stressful for some and to find something that you can enjoy and and "disappear" in the moments, it is fulfilling. Agree. I'm 46, and I started my channel five months ago to inform and inspire the underrepresented low to middle-class to achieve true freedom. I'm not an expert in any of the topics I discuss, but people can relate and benefit from my decades of failures, learnings, and successes. I believe there are always people who know more than me and people who know less than me. RU-vid is an excellent platform for learning from each other.
