If you want to be really impressed at this track watch Ken block in the Hoonicorn. 1400hp all wheel drive 66 mustang GT. Run on nitro methane. It’s ridiculous
I find it extremely impressive because it is a no downforce car. And being a 60’s stang it’s as aerodynamic as a brick. But I agree it is sometimes to dramatic. I’m. A Ford guy tho
“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games,” Ernest Hemingway Two of those three combined in this race. The occasional goat encounter could make it a 3fer.
I was stationed nearby at Ft Carson back in 95. Went down that road in a POS Ford Probe. Brakes went out on the way down. Everybody pooed a little bit.
I lived in Colorado for 30 years. I learned downhill skiing on Pikes Peak. We lived on the apron of it, in Divide, Colorado. I've participated in rescues there and we found various car parts in places you'd never have thought there'd be any
My grandparents lived about two miles north of Catamount Reservoir. It was somewhat annoying in June and July because you could hear the engines roaring all day on the qualifiers and race day, which drove their dogs crazy too.
For a casual drive it isn't really that bad when people follow the signs instead of cutting the speed limit in half. A visit to the top can get cut short when there is a huge grey wall coming toward you and lighting up randomly. Just make sure to get your free donut before going back down. They're a bit different when made that high above sea level.
Just looked it up... fastest time at Pikes Peak is under 8 minutes, by an electric car! Guess it makes sense, since such a powertrain wouldn't be as affected by altitude as air/fuel rigs... And there have been only 7 deaths in the race's 105 year history; four were motorcyclists, two were drivers, and one race official. Most have been in the last thirty years.
There are roads like that in Southern Ireland where its 600 feet straight down and the only protection is a two foot high slate stone wall. But this video really reminded me of western Crete. No guard rail, big drop, asphalt breaking off at the edges, and herds of goats.
Several times taking the cog railway up, it would be 70F at the bottom, and snowing when you got to the top. Clouds blowing by below you. Don't wear shorts even in summer if you do that trip.
We drove up Pike's Peak when I was a kid, and those drop-offs were scary as hell even at 25 mph or less. It was on June 1st and there were still snow flurries at the top.
I was visiting my brother who was stationed at Ft. Carson in 2011, we went up Pike's Peak in his older jeep wrangler. At one of the steepest points he stopped and let it roll backwards a bit, I almost killed him for that.
I’ve driven up and back on this road. About every half mile you are stopped and they check your brakes to ensure that they are over heated. No guard rails are crazy scary.
I'm in Colorado Springs just down the road from the base of Pikes Peak. When you come here for the 1st time just walking or going up a flight of stairs feels like your lungs are on fire and it takes a good 2-3 weeks just to get used to the air. They still have the race annually but they suspended the motorcycle race after that guy died. And coming down is even worse cause it will take you several hours to get down cause you have to pull over to the side of the road the cool off your brakes cause you have to use them a lot coming down.
I lived in Colorado for a couple years and have been all the up to the top of pikes peak and the videos don’t do it enough justice going like 25 mph through there was sketchy as fuck I couldn’t image doing this fucking crazy😂😂
I live in Colorado and know a couple of guys who did that race for many years. It's exhilarating. The fastest I have ever ridden along in a car doing about 50 mph in places and that scared me to death!
In 2020 several Teslas raced in the EV category, watching the video from inside the car was insane. One cool element for the EVs was no power loss as experienced by ICE vehicles. And just to show how crazy folks are for Pikes Peak, there's a half-marathon to the peak and a full marathon up and back from the base. Had a friend do it several times ....
There is an area out where I live in Canada called Kananaskis, It goes through the mountains and back down into the foothills. I have driven it on a perfectly early spring day where it is 20 C in Calgary and when you get into the Kananaskis area it drops suddenly to 2 C and a almost white out blizzard for 100 km then as you get into the foothills it becomes rain and 10 C and meanwhile back in the city it is still 20 C. It's a total blast!
I used to race on a road called the Rim of the World Ohio. Very similar layout of switchbacks and blind corners without the extreme elevation changes. It was brutal enough.
A big section used to be unpaved, too, which I *think* was towards the top. Edit: I just saw that part about paving it. Leave it up to the Sierra Club to f*ck everything up. They refused to allow a new bridge to be built in Stillwater, MN. So thousands of cars would be crossing a bridge built in the 20s/30s, and still having to go up every 30 minutes while you would sit ON THE BRIDGE waiting for the boat to cross under, feeling it shake while thousands of tons of steel loomed over your head. That entire group needs to go. They've done more harm than good to the world. (We now have a fully concrete bridge 1/4 mile down the road, after the government stepped in, which doesn't have to go up or down, is 4 lanes, and gives an amazing view. The old bridge is a biking and walking area.)
Erosion from the gravel road. While a 14,000 ft mountain that has been eroding for millions of years, and will continue to do so, into the same water ways. Those people couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. Speaking of which, It's the same mental issues that years ago wanted to switch to plastic bags from paper to save trees. Now look what that's caused.
Summer of 2019 I went to Colorado Springs and went to the top of pikes peak and it was ine hell of a scene also you are so high up there is no cell signal and the air is so thin its a little harder to breath. Some of the clouds were even lower than I was
One thing this video didn't mention is the absence of rules in the Unlimited Division. As long as standard safety equipment (roll cage, safety harness, etc.) is installed, cars can utilize any engine and aerodynamics they want, as described in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-omkBKUpGVLk.html.
I always enjoyed watching the super semi trucks. They fly in the lower altitudes but noticeably struggle high up. I enjoyed when it was dirt more. More drifting like rally.
We drove up it many years ago and my knuckles were white the entire time, as my husband was driving and I was on the passenger side looking down the 1000 foot drop offs. It would have been better to be the driver. Coming down, we had to pull over several times, along with other cars, to give the brakes a rest. That was worse than going up.
Was in 10th SFG(A) in the middle to late 90s; we'd have ruck marches and even runs up that damned thing. If you ran all the way to the top you'd get a posthumous award.
Fun Fact: Pikes Peak is not a race track, it's a race course. A race track is a permanent installation, Pikes Peak is not: it's a public road when not used for racing. In the same way, the Monaco circuit is not a race track, but a race course, same goes for the Singapore and Baku circuits.
living in the west of america n all. i feel like yall would trip doin of the drives we do..jus last weekend i almost died tryn to get to this lake..i didnt make it to the lake, but lucky i didn't die(SO close)
u blokes should look into that volkswagen ID.R that holds the pikes peak record. they developed it in like 8 months? or something super quick considering they blitz'd the record. imagine if they took more time to develop the car.. amazing machine, all electric so it was able to get passed the thin air problem of combustible engines. and it's designed for massive downforce so even in the thin air they are able 2 get some grip.
My brother recently moved to Colorado Springs (not too far from here) we drove up this mountain, I was pissing myself the entire way up. We were only going about 20 mph.
There are other 'Mountain Climb' races & some may be more dangerous around the world. I think the most dangerous motorized race is still Isle of Man with hardly any elevation change at all. It may be an apples to oranges comparison but there are more drivers & spectators killed in Isle of Man. Spectator limitations to certain areas of Pikes Peak are being removed this year. While Isle of Man is starting to seriously consider limitations. Both seem pretty insane to me.
Hello, hey quick question. I went on a trip way back when a d went to Colorado. But I forget where I went I just remember a big blue monkey. Can you help me on this one?
Carlin, the champ killed on the bike recently was bringing another huge element to the race when Ducati wanted him to become a factory rider where they wanted to become the first factory motorcycle lteam ajd he was on par the break records on the not yet relapsed and very anticipated Ducati V4R Streetfigbtdr, ajd factory stock bike with 235 ho . Everyone followed the checkpoint times and he was well above a world record setting pace with just a couple turns left and seconds away his wife and children and Team Ducati we’re waiting at the finish life to congratulate him . With seconds left everyone assumed he finished but the big timers all over remained running , after 15 seconds or so they sensed something happend maybe it died or fell on the Yosef of the hill expecting to run around the first bed. And see him off his bike looking at something but when they all rounded the corner it was jsut silence , nothing to be seen but standing near turn15e his wife looked back up at the finishe line and the clock was still running . At 152 you can see for Avery long ways none the stack, no sign of hind not a sound , dead silence . His wife looked at the tram leader to ask what’s going on and he slowly looking at this huge edge and he started slowly walking towards the edge and transitioning to a run to the edge and his boss man screamed for someone to call lifeigjt
Hey Office Blokes. Start putting the original video in your title. I want to see if this creator knows about the Isle of Mann TT. That course is so bad F1 can’t even do it. They’ll most likely take to the air.
I love how Guy Martin came over here and raced Pikes Peak Superbike class and won it his first try. That’s shows everybody just how damn good those TT racers are. Plus, I think he got a date out of it.
Two things: 1. There are thousands of one if a kind world-renowned things like this in the United States. 2. I love how you guys 100% represent and love your country, but respect or traditions here. By the way, Chicago is the best city in the states lol.
