In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the High Speed Ground Transportation Act into law. It was supposed to usher in a new era of high speed bullet trains connecting every city in the U.S. But that never happened. Why did our plans for high speed train travel never get on rails?

so why in the end it did not happen ? i still don't know. colourful video lacking substance

Maciej S Because it is not feasible. The U.S. is too big for high speed rail transportation. Flying around the country is still faster.

How does that make any sense ? Then you can just do it connecting cities on coasts. Nobody expects a high speed railway from NYC to LA

Maciej S Even the big cities on the coasts are too far apart for high speed rail to be faster than flying. There are some exceptions. But because of the size of the country, flying is still the main way of transportation for long distances.

The video said it: because of sprawling and cost. 150 billions for the north east corridor alone, good luck with passing that in Congress!

That upgrade is actually rebuilding the Northeast corridor. Creating a newer, straighter line. It is not about upgrading the line. Also there is unnecessary regulations on building infrastructure. South Korea can build an above ground maglev train service for $56 million dollars per mile. Pretty cheap considering this is an elevated maglev train. Then you get to America. The Green Line extension from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie is an at-grade light rail line that is proposed to cost $124 million per mile. Portland is even worse with $200 million per mile. And the second avenue subway that was constructed in New York costed an astounding $4 billion for a nearly 2 mile line.

Uh, the Metroliner is gone because it was replaced by the faster Acela service, and the old equipment relegated to Regional service.

i bet it was the same people (corporations) who had the Railcar systems removed from cities , see the PBS film Taken for a Ride .

Instead of looking at the bigger picture, too much power is given to NIMBYs.

Having [more] trains in America would be exciting. I mean Europe and Japan already has many of them, so why can't we?

the closest this country will ever come to MAGLEV or TGV is Disneyland's Monorail. as long as OIL dictates, wheels on tracks and tires on trucks are what will do the transporting. with motors that demand fossil fuel to run. it can change. hopefully by the time my grandkids come up you all will be solar/wind powered and not have to worry toxic waste or air or water or food. Big Changes Can Happen. you just need to quit Fossil Fuel
