Why Police Touch Your Taillight, It's Extremely Important!

How to Deal with the Police. Have you ever noticed a police officer feeling his way along a car’s taillight during a stop? Most of us have either been pulled over or observed it happening to someone else. Regardless of what the fault may be, when a vehicle is stopped, one thing is for sure: the officer will slide their hand across the car’s taillight on their way to the driver’s window. This is a common practice amongst police officers all around the world, and it’s considered extremely important.

SUMMARY
-Statistically, there are over 1.2 billion people worldwide driving their cars on the road every day. The average American spends 17,600 minutes driving their car every year.
-Over 50 American police officers were killed last year during routine vehicle stops. These officers pulled over drivers for a variety of reasons, including speeding, stolen vehicles, and running red lights.
-Tapping the taillight is a custom that dates back to before the invention of police cameras, and it’s still taught today in police academies. Basically, they are trying to catch you doing something wrong.
-A short, sharp noise from the back of the car can frighten someone attempting to hide drugs or weapons in the front seat.
-To ensure that there is evidence that an officer pulled over a specific car, the police will always attempt to leave their fingerprint on the rear light of the vehicle.
-New technology has essentially made leaving evidence on the taillight obsolete, but the police continue to do it. From accounts of police officers themselves, they want to touch the taillight out of sheer loyalty to what it represents.
-If you notice a police officer tap the back light after pulling you over, it’s important not to get upset or angry. You may think that you have done nothing wrong and are being treated as a criminal, but the officer is just being cautious.

As a former police officer, I'm actually offended by this video. Upon approaching the driver, if the officer is close enough to the car to be able to touch the taillight, then this ensures that he/she will remain in the driver's blind spot. If you stop a car, you're gonna call it in, giving the plate number to dispatch. THAT will link the officer to that particular car in the event the officer should get hurt or killed. To say that it's to leave a fingerprint or to startle someone about to hide drugs is beyond idiotic.

@kellycarver2500
@kellycarver2500 5 лет назад
There used to be laws that cops weren't allowed to HIDE from people. Somehow that all changed, and now they hide everywhere, even to the point of just using cameras now. Why would an officer think it's safer or even okay to walk up in someone's blind spot? In order to surprise the person or just to avoid a possible bullet? I get along great with cops, and I admire them usually, for the jobs they have to do, but I don't think it's right for them to be sneaky about stuff. (I have been the victim of undercover police harassment and illegal acts, and none of that is acceptable, but not a thing I can do about it. It's just evil.)

As a retired officer who served for 32 years in Los Angeles, I can assure you this entire clip is utter nonsense. Officers will, in extreme situations, sometimes check to make sure that the trunk is closed completely in the event that a suspect may be hiding in the trunk for ambush purposes. In all my years and literally tens of thousands of vehicle stops I can say I have never even heard of tapping a tail light on a traffic stop.

I've been in the business for 32 years and I've never heard of most of this stuff. First and foremost, we were trained to put our hand on the trunk of the car to make sure that it was closed and secure. There have been times when a gunman was hiding in the trunk. The second purpose is to leave our handprints on the back of the car. When you make a traffic stop, you call in the license plate or make and model of the vehicle. The print is an added piece of evidence. As far as the "ritual", the ritual is for the reasons I mentioned. It has nothing to do with some solidarity among police officers.

I watch bodycam videos now and then and have wondered about this because I see so many cops do it. Such a bad video and now I'm going to look this up to see what others say about it. NOTE: I think whomever wrote the script has a tenuous grasp of English and used several words, like "solidarity", that they did not understand. It's very common on YT in particular but I see it in supposedly professionally-edited places like newspapers, too.

I've spent over a decade working as a cop. I can tell you that though on rare occasion officers are confronted with random violence, there would be far fewer officers shot if there were far fewer patrol cops acting like arrogant jerks with a chip on their shoulder. Nice, respectful and professional officers usually get the same in return. And how you treat people often dictates how they react. If you come across as abrupt, cold and mean, why should you expect others to react that way? I know we are taught "command presence" as a survival skill in so many training programs, but I have found in my on life experience that this only works with a select few of hardened felons. For your average person it is a turn off and for the mentally ill, it can backfire. You best bet is to come across more as an Andy Griffith or Paul Edgecomb and less as a Percy Wetmore. You earn the trust of the public by being trustworthy. And that's means more than just having integrity. It also means pride in how you present yourself and commonsense in how you deal with people. Unless you 100% truly fear for your life, meaning that he has a gun pointed directly at you, you have no business drawing a gun on an autistic 7-year-old or a 79-year-old man in a wheelchair.
@OakOracle

A few decades ago I was pulled over by an OPP officer in Northern Ontario Canada, It was winter and I had stopped for gas a short time before the stop happened. As he came up to my driver side window he tapped my tail light (1978 dodge van). He asked a few questions then said there was snow blocking my tail light. As he left (no ticket) he swiped the taillight again. There was no snow on my tail lights, as I had just seen them when I got gas and also it was almost impossible for snow to stick as the taillights and assembly where almost vertical. He lied, as he was looking for a radar detector (he asked if I had one) as it was illegal in that province.

I was a police officer for over 30yrs and I found one thing was true, everyone hates a cop until they need one it seems this has not changed due to comments on this page. Just remember this the only thing that stands between you and total chaos is that person that chooses to become a police officer, yes officers make mistakes and there are bad officers and corrupt officers out there, but most are just trying to do their jobs and go home to their families after their shift. There is no way to tell how a person will react in any given situation until it happens. Just remember this there are many, many more people out there in this world that want to harm you more than police officers. You all have a nice day now and drive safe!

@ericdraven7185
@ericdraven7185 6 лет назад
As a police officer I can tell you this video is completely wrong... police officers don't tap tail lights to alert the driver they are approaching to "scare" the driver if he is doing anything wrong... just the opposite they don't want the driver to know when and from where they are approaching, they touch the rear of the trunk area not the tail light to leave prints, in case they are killed on the stop to help identify the suspect vehicle (this is not obsolete and is still done by many officers) AND It is done to ensure the truck is not open.. YES police have been ambushed by people inside a trunk with a gun.. yes it don't happen often but is has. Police now days like long ago, call out the license plate, and description of the car... not every department has in car cameras, and many still for various reason do not have body cams, im not going to get into why.
@miketj2516
@miketj2516 6 лет назад
Don't you radio someone when you stop a car and run the tag? Isn't that sufficient evidence that you stopped the car? Even if your prints are on the car, so what? Your prints won't prove WHEN you touched the car and certainly won't prove that the driver killed you.

Completely ridiculous, check your sources Bright Side!

@ericdraven7185
@ericdraven7185 6 лет назад
@@FearisThaVirus well Nick I'm not really going to get into that but the laws on body cams vary from state to state ... There are lot of rules and procedures attached to body cams... for example some states the department has to go thru every single cams footage and blur everyone's face that isn't involved, ect... imagine a department with 5 officers... how would you like that job of combing thru each officers body cam. Imagine a dept with 50 or a 1000 officers... video has to be held for so long, the amount of space required body cam footage is beyond enormous... That's just the tip of the ice berg.... it has zero to do with police miscondut... in fact just the opposite... It's criminals like BLM who cried for body cams the most and now they cry they want them taken away because it shows who really is acting inappropriately

I've been pulled over at least 30+ times in my life as my right foot weighs about 15 lbs and I've never once seen that. They may have touched it without me knowing because I turn off my car, turn on the dome light if it's night time and I roll down my window and face straight ahead where they can see my hands clearly, but they've never hit it to make noise before. The fingerprint is really smart though, though now if need be, if for some crazy reason something ever happened where I had to run from the police, I'd know to clean my tail lights. Thanks for that! Although I don't have much cause to run from police anyhow so hopefully that will never be an issue.

Dean Ovshak. here's a thing I saw once... I was driving home one afternoon and as it got closer I noticed some lights coming faster behind me. I was going the speed limit. I drove through several small towns. as I was getting closer to my town the car with lights sped right past me, no sirens were heard. I thought where is he going in such a hurry. I followed the police car , all the way into my town, up some familiar streets, as I followed him to the street we both lived on, I pulled into my driveway, got out of my car and looked in his direction. he turned off his Patrol lights and turned off the patrol car, walked to the front door of his house, turned around to see me still standing there, shrugged his shoulders and went inside his home. my point is... he never stopped any one along the way. They are not there to serve their ego, nor have they been hired to prop up the local coffers. They are especially not hired to create more stress in our lives as citizens. I understand that there is a lot of stress involved in police work, but something the best officers have in common is they do everything they can to reduce the stress in their day to day encounters. The approach of these types of police officers inspires trust, and most importantly they diffuse volatile situations. Unfortunately this training seems to be lacking for most officers as police in America are notoriously known for taking bad situations and making them worse. A wonderful example of this is taping the back of a car. In the video this is highlighted as a way to take an already anxious person, and potentially scare them into making a mistake. This is bad for both sides as the more scared someone is the less predictable they become. The less predictable they are the more likely they are to do something extremely bad. Creating a vicious cycle that has unfortunately only bad outcomes for everyone involved. Contrarily the less scared someone is the more likely they are to think about the consequences of their actions. This is human behavior 101. It is a shame that so many officers have been killed in the line of duty because this lesson doesn’t seem to either be taught to new officers, or remembered by veterans.

They aren't touching the tail light. They are insuring the trunk is closed and locked and that someone isn't going to climb quickly out of the trunk to attack them from behind.

The only reason I recall from the academy was to make sure the trunk is closed to prevent and ambush as well as feel for any motion which might indicate someone else in the car but out of sight, possibly in the trunk. Curious if other cops have heard of any of the other stuff mentioned. I hadn't. I think the fingerprint thing is urban legend.
