Why Prehistoric Planet is BRILLIANT 

My biggest problem with PhP isn’t even the documentary itself, it’s the fact that in the span of 6 months no official merch or dvd release has been made or announced. Like come on Apple, you know what the people want.

I would love to see a sleeping T Rex opening it’s eyes to see what’s disturbing it then deciding it not worth the effort and goes back to sleep.

The Prehistoric Planet T rex is probably one of my favorite ever T-rex designs. It's nice how they were more focused on making it look realistic rather than looking "cool"

Another thing I liked about prehistoric planet is that they also introduced rather obscure animals and not just the famous ones .Most people probably never heard of Tuarangisaurus, barbaridactylus , Phosphatodraco, thetydraco ,alcione and secernosaurus

There's no better example of feeling powerful than having Rick mentioning a book (all yesterdays) and you having a copy of it. It's genuenily just as good as he states and i really recommend it

Honestly really appreciated the fact that the father rex totally bypassed the living archelon to go for the much easier meal - the dead one. So many doc/mockumentaries just show carnivores going on a killing spree for S&Gs like indominus rex, it's awful. Edit: I appreciate so many replies! Clearly I've made a terrible mistake by citing indo-rex as my killing-spree type monster. Yes, I know indo-rex _was_ killing things for fun and because she was neglected, bored, and abused. So to clarify, I dislike it when media is trying to make naturalistic animals kill things all the time, at random, for no good reason. There are some exceptions, such as (but not only) cats, who do kill for S&Gs, and other animals that have caching behaviors. My problem comes when the animal is used as an antagonist just to have an animal antagonist, or to add "shock value" to whatever they're making.

There’s something unnatural and terrifying about accurate Rex sounds. Like sure a roar is scary but the actual sounds are unsettling.

That Deinocheirus has to be my favorite depiction of the animal. I love how it looks like a gross swamp monster thing

Prehistoric Planet is definitely a worthy successor to Walking With Dinosaurs. I’d love to see maybe a prequel or spin-off of it set in the Jurassic

I think one element of Prehistoric Planet that I enjoyed was that the portrayal of Phosphatodraco, Quetza, and Hatze was genuinely terrifying. Idk if it's just me but whenever you'd see close up shots of some of these guys I'm freaked out. Some of these fuckers are as big as giraffes, so I can't imagine something that large walking like that in a forest. Seeing the mother Quetza move and vocalize, and the Phosphatodraco makin' his way downtown in the colony with a cold and casual stride made me see them in a new light. Typically pterosaurs are, like Rick said, background animals, so I was surprised at how much they intimidated me and stole the show. I mean, I knew they were big, but I give massive props to the artists and animators to create pterosaurs that are both beautifully and lovingly designed, yet also induce a sense of terror in me. I'm almost glad they didn't shoot a night scene with them. They're genuinely so weird and I love them.

Honestly, very thoughtfully said and well put together video You hit the points of fossil evidence, speculation, the different set pieces and the inspiration behind them, the dinosaurs just being animals, and even the criticism that can come with it all. Really a no stone left unturned review, even with mentioning how people see this as a “successor” as well referencing the “All Yesterday’s” book. Really it feels like what I could not put into words when I saw Prehistoric Planet for the first time is just all here in this video

As someone who grew up in the post-walking-with-dinosaurs age, I couldn't have said it better myself, props!

That closing statement took the words right out of my mouth about why this is my favorite documentary of all time. I saw so many folks complaining that it didn't depict more of the Mezazoic, but I say that showing off a single period not only does what you said, but also shows that different geological periods are just as complex, diverse and interesting as our own.

The true beauty of this series is that you sit down, start watching and are pulled subtlety and wholly into the world Attenborough paints. You forgot you’re staring at a depiction of the world hundreds of millions of years ago. It’s so real, you might as well be watching a documentary on elephants in south-east Asia. Truly magical.

I hardcore grew up with Walking with Dinosaurs as a kid. I always loved the peaceful atmosphere, and the realistic portrayals of the dinosaurs. Sure I liked the more action packed documentaries, but Walking with Dinosaurs was always calming for me, and today still provides a calming sensation. When I first heard that Apple TV was going to make a similar series, I was really skeptical and nervous because I've kind of lost faith and modern dinosaur documentaries. However, when I first watched the first episode, the intro literally brought me to tears. The clear respect for the source material, the beautiful music, the narration by the legendary David Attenborough, I felt an overwhelming sense of emotion. The series really was a worthy successor to Walking with Dinosaurs, and I'm glad to say that it was worth the hype.

My best friend's dad actually made lots of the props for this, including a triceratops skull and mosasaurus skull

When the world needed him most… he has returned I loved Prehistoric Planet, and I’m not certain if we’ll have something like this again (at least in the very near future)

Never have I thought I would live to see the day Rickraptor being amazed at a documentary. We truly live in a great time.

On an awesome note: This feathered velociraptor looks scarier than the jp one, not even a movie monster can look cooler than a real predator The part when the velociraptors are climbing is my favourite scene, it’s awesome

The return of "THOSE ARE TRICERATOPS!!!" Jokes aside, this was a fantastic review of a fantastic documentary, I'm glad that the world has something like Prehistoric Planet, it was not only something we wanted, but something we needed.

While I love the Jurassic franchise (as a whole, my opinions about the movies differ from film to film), it was so refreshing to have dinosaurs treated like actual animals. I feel like dinosaurs got sucked into that “what if everything was deadly” mindset that ruined shark docs for a while.

The gentle disappearance of the baby tyrannosaurus was possible even scarier than a super attack. After watching all the episodes I went to show it to my son, who loves dinosaurs and usually has no problem with movie deaths, he was upset about, he only accepted to continue seeing after 10 days and with the promise that there were no more puppies dying.

One of the many small design details that completely captured me in the show is how sleek the Qianzhousaurus is, and how they gave it stripes. Really reminiscent to me of a tiger, and I think that was the idea. It's super interesting to imagine that the apex ambush predator in a similar grassy type forest in asia would have the same pattern scheme to its counterpart millions of years in the future. I also love how they showed it failing its first hunt, just like most predators do, even massive ancient ones. Tyrannosaurs aren't just perfect killing machines, and the prey isn't just docile and dumb, they are alert and defensive too! I think that shows how they first and foremost aimed to make a nature doc, not a dinosaur show, and i absolutely love it!

This masterpiece of a series was like an otherworldly experience. They made the Mesozoic Era an even more immersive world than Pandora. I legitimately felt sad when I saw the hatzegopteryx fly out into the sunset, dreading that this could be the last time in a long while before I can visit the age of the dinosaurs in this high in quality again.

While some people call it a spiritual successor to WWD, I think it's closest to March of the Dinosaurs formula, just having dinosaurs be dinosaurs. One of the most iconic parts of it were when the herbivores fought each other, because yeah, herbivores weren't just mindless lovey-dovey cuddle monsters, but are animals competing with each other for resources. Through, March of the Dinosaurs still had its awesomebro moments. Prehistoric Planet was beyond phenomenal, and im sure it will spur a whole new age of paleomedia as the walking-with series did before it.

I completely agree, Prehistoric Planet is less of a sequel to WWD and more of a television adaptation of All Yesterdays. And I am much more happier with that. Edit: well Naish confirmed it wasn’t this lol

Prehistoric Planet is my new favorite paleo documentary. I binge it almost every other day.

It’s nice to see our German raptor evolve to more positive reviews, and this right here is a perfect example of reviewing the best documentary to ever come out! And the fact that it’s not about extinction of the dinosaurs in the end really stands out! You get to see how these magnificent animals live their lives, and act like… actual animals. I am in genuine tears of joy!

you really hit the nail on the head about why this is a documentary that just feels better than the rest and it really is the overall tone of the thing, theres no doom and gloom its just "Hey thats a cool looking animal just sleeping" or "hey look at this goofy little guy trying to impress a female" and its really refreshing and nice to see in a paleo documentary. It just felt like a kind and respectful way of looking at these animals in a way thats more approachable to the average person, making them see them the same way you might see a bear, yeah he could kill you, but doesnt he look cute when he sleeps?

I will say about the segment with the sauropods toppling trees arguably is more showing how they were enormous engineers of their environment, promoting new growth and recycling of nutrients. Using a dinosaur to explain their interaction with the all the plants in the ecosystem is something new. But yeah, its amazing. Can't say that enough, I almost cried when it ended lol

As a kid I used to watch dinosaur movies all day long on repeat (Especially walking with dinosaurs). I am very fond of these memories.

I just loved that they gave dinosaurs actual muscles mass and body fat instead of looking dehidrated and starving all the time. Also the dinosaurs weren't the centre of every episode which it's cool

I actually remember reading a graphic novel as a child about the hellcreek formation that should honey producing bee colonies. That was in 2009.

I fell in love with the Deinocheirus from this show and while I am sad we didnt see more of it I am happy just how gorgeous it was.

Ice Worlds and especially the Nanuqsaurus sequence was my absolute favourite moment.

This documentary was the peak of this year. I'm so glad how this one turned out. The best piece of Paleomedia I've consumed since Walking With Dinosaurs.

I never believe it when people say that the Carno is popular, because it’s not in children’s Dino media very often(I’m talking about books). Although it’s popularity has grown in my opinion in the last few years, I feel like it’s still not at the level I want. It’s my favorite Dino and I wish it was more loved

What I liked the most about prehistoric planet was that the dinos actually felt like real animals in their habitat.

some of the sound inspiration for theropods for sure included animals like the Ostrich, Emu and Cassowary as evidence of what they actually sounded like since those animals are the closest you'll ever get to something like a Trex or Raptor other then crocodiles Also them showcasing the male being the one to take care of the young while the female is nowhere to be seen is also taken from Emus and Cassowaries

Rick, you should review Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal. It is one of the best shows, of all time. Purely badassery, and sure, it’s not very accurate, but you should still review it. It’s also criminally underrated.

Ah, so THIS was that thing that “wasn’t supposed to go live”. I barely missed it during that Atlantis stream, and I must say it’s been worth the wait.

This year was trully the Year of the Dinosaurs !!! A lot of thing came to rebuilt people´s love for Dinosaurs, not by the way they look, but for the spectacular animals they are !!! Both Jurassic World: Dominion and Prehistoric Planet are both equally masterpieces to me !!! The first nailed it as a movie, by being trully outstandig and very intense and funny, with cool and awesome designs, and the second reach an almost 100% perfect accuracy everyone always expect to see in a Natural History Dinosaur themed series ... And even have the legend itself, Attenborough, to makes everything way more magical !! Also, I love how Rick is the first person (or maybe, Raptor 😁) I see that trully seems to understand that it´s not necessary to dismiss Dominion (or the general Jurassic franchise) to make Prehistoric Planet looks great, since both are mesmeringlly wonderfull in they own ways !!! 💖

I have to say that Hank the T Rex playing 'daddy daycare' feeding on sea turtles is something I have been thinking about for a few years: with those jaws, an adult (or even a subadult) Rex would make short work of a sea turtle; wouldn't it make sense that when sea turtles came ashore to lay their eggs, it would be an outstanding opportunity to feast? Kind of like Kodiak bears and the salmon runs, the Rexes of various ages would squabble over finding a good place to wait for the arriving turtles. That being said, it must be added that Creteceous sea turtles would have to be large as hell and/or armored like a main battle tank to survive in the Western Seaway, that throws my theory in doubt, to some degree.

1000 times better than 'life on our planet' on netflix. They litterally used "not cool enough" to describe some aspects they didnt want to use(like realistic colours) and dont get started on the trex.
