Why producers quit

Here's a little motivational story about blue belts and bamboo. It's something every aspiring music producer runs into: a lack of perceived progress. A plateau. Expectations and frustrations.
If you keep these metaphors in mind, you have what it takes to get through the dip, to keep pleasure and discipline for as long as it takes to turn your downwards growth into upwards growth.

I watch this video again every once in a while to both remind myself that I have my own pace; and to compare myself to who I used to be (in terms of skill level) and not to who others are today.

I'm stuck in this awful phase where after years of practice I'm good enough to hear that my productions simply don't meet the standard that I'm looking for. Because of this, I can't seem to finish anything anymore. I keep trying and pushing and objectively I know I'm getting better every project but it's just really demotivating to have nothing to show for it. Your channel has really helped me push through some stuff though, thank you :)

I do listen much to my own work and I do see the progression and I figured that if I turn out to live for another 100 years, Maybe I create something that's remotely commercial attractive. Be proud of every progression and just enjoy what you're doing, 'cause you are doing it for yourself afterall

KEEP GOING. The results DO come. I was in the same place, and one thing I did was to just keep making tracks. Sure, you may not like the final result, but you FINISHED IT. That, is way more important. I work on music EVERY morning, and I journal about what I've been working on. Having that internal conversation every day written down where you can go back and review how you surpassed yourself will come in unbelievably handy. I know it does for me. Hope this helps!

This came at just the right time. I went from being a complete novice to getting decent results after about 2 years. And the second year, I was doing it everyday. But then I just seemed to hit a wall with my mixes. It's just very difficult to get it the way you want it. So I thought I would take a little break. Unfortunately, that was three months ago and I haven't touched my DAW. But I have been feeling the itch to start up again. And now I'm going to do just that. So thank you. 🥋

When I'm flailing at any hobby, I find that if I give it a break and come back to it later, my skills have improved more than they would've if I'd just powered through the plateau or difficulty. Our brains keep working even when we aren't. Run a search on "free throw thought experiment visualization". I read about that decades ago and hadn't really used the information until I starting putting my PS4 games down for a few days to a week before returning. With music I don't do the visualization, but I do think about aspects of my project and how I can solve issues. Of course, with some hobbies, I'd expect some skills to decline if one goes TOO long without practice. Another technique to break out of a plateau (that I heard in an online course) is to make music you wouldn't normally produce... or even like/listen to... as a way to push you out of your comfort zone. This could introduce you to new techniques, sounds, etc. that you may not have otherwise been exposed.

i came to the realisation a few months ago that we as people are way too focused on the destination and end result without having to go through the journey which by itself is an unforgettable experience necessary to enjoy the destination. im over 30 now and don't think it's too late to start still so i went back to music production now that i am a working adult with lost interest in a lot of old hobbies except music production. the bamboo metaphor is a good way to describe the struggle a lot of people go through when they stop seeing the visually tangible growth when a large role in sustained growth is building your fundamentals first.

When ever I hear people asking advice on what the most important thing for new producers is, I always say "patience" I don't think a lot of people realise just how long it takes and how many hours you need to put into learning before your music begins to sound anywhere close to 'professional' It's also all about 'marginal gains' as well. There aren't many things you can learn that will make you a better producer/musician overnight. It's all about learning small techniques and theory that build up your skill set slowly over time. I think that can be very frustrating for newer producers. As you say, it has to become part of your life! Great video! You've got a new subscriber! 😁

I can relate as I’ve hit walls before & still do but I never stop studying & putting in the work, theirs no other way around it. Always new knowledge to gain, comprehend & apply. If you don’t practice like anything you cannot expect growth. When we hit these walls it’s so easy to throw in the towel & sometimes it’s good to take a break from studio. Come back refreshed & with optimistic outlook, our ears often need a break. I wish you all the best in your musical endeavors. Thank you Oscar for making these tutorials & your unique approach which definitely is refreshing to witness.

I'd also like to add that, as a woman, we also have another set of obstacles such as negging, patronising, mansplaining, sexual objetification rather than respect (or complete rejection if there's no sexual interest), we aren't allowed to make a single mistake EVER, there's judgement e.g. someone is helping her, she only got there because of her looks... and all of this (i can imagjne) is even harder if you're a gay male. So yeah there's countless times I've wanted to give up because of the scene itself but I'm not stopping. I want this stuff to change and I want to be a part of the change. The production side is hard enough as it is but it is thankfully falling into place now after years of setbacks.

Thank you for this video. I am part of a circus (as a juggler), for us FLOW is important. This comes from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (positive psychology), it;s about the optimum between frustration and being bored. So many people stop because they push themselves too hard! It's about finding pleasure in doing, not pleasure in success. I juggling, the step from 5 to 7 balls is pretty big. If you want success, you will not find it in the next 2 years. If you search for pleasure, you have a stronger basis to continue for a long time and a bigger chance to juggle 7. And if you can only juggle 3 balls, but you have a good time, it's also great!

Fantastic metaphors. Really a great video. Lots of useful info here. I unfortunately just got too sick. 10 years passed in and out of surgery, and trying to find adjustable work. Music just wasn't in the budget. Time or monetarily. I walked away for nearly a decade. I spent so much time away from music that I forgot most of my engineering and production knowledge that I went to school for in the early 2000s. Well, now I'm trying to refind my way now that it fits into my schedule and these videos are fantastic. Inspirational and educational. Much appreciated.

It’s near impossible to improve without criticizing your own work. Constantly realizing and improving flaws is part of the journey. There’s no way around it, so why not enjoy it? Otherwise, you’ll be chasing perfectionism forever and never be satisfied. Just keep creating and sharing. You’ll never know who will experience joy from your music. I always think about how much music we’ll never get to hear because the artist wasn’t satisfied with their work.

6/7years of working and I basically lost all passion/drive to continue anymore, I’ve neglected all relationships in my life including neglecting myself, I’ve basically wasted all of my twenties on music production, I’ve wasted time/money, ignored possibilities for growth in other areas of my life for this and i failed to market myself or feel confident enough about by work to release anything for so long that the motivation to continue is completely dead now.

Perfectly timed video for today for me, Oscar! Especially after a fantastic day One in the Deep Dive, it caused me to re-think over all the reasons WHY we do what we do, and what it IS exactly that we do, because in our search for our own uniqueness, we can get lost and obscured in the mental cornfields (and it's easy to forget these things), and get frustrated. And not that it ALWAYS makes us want to give up necessarily, but sometimes our confidence gets shaken and we think we'll NEVER be good enough to be taken seriously, or that we don't provide the world a real service, because WE DO! It's just not always easy to see our own value because it's like looking directly at your own eyeballs without a mirror; it's IMPOSSIBLE. Until someone else sees our work and says, "Wow! Your music really makes me feel a certain way!" or some other form of genuine feedback we get really means a lot, and that can be one of our guiding lights. We won't always admit we need validation, but deep down, we DO. I'm just so glad that your school tackles these philosophical notions and places them on an EVEN scale as the technical knowledge. Today is a good day, Oscar. Thank you so much. -Kristian (aka Hangnail, aka AUTOSAD) lol

Hey man! This is really reassuring to hear. I've bought a DAW 6 years ago and since then I've casually tred to experiment and learn production with it. Too many times it's not really fun, because I do have the feeling of not improving. Now I have a really good metaphor to remind me that this is worth doing from time to time, and that I shouldn't give up. To be optimistic, every other time, I do have a session that's really fun, and the results are slowly getting better. :-)

Producing should now and then make you feel uncomfortable and that's OK. I play tennis and see the same thing happening as you see in jiu jiutsu. At some point the steps will be smaller, the technique is less of importance. Almost all of the games come down to how you can handle it mentaly! This is good to put into that perspective. I don't seem to have problems making melodies, creating music..but the production part I'm always second-guessing. A year ago I would get a kick and just tweak it for hours trying to find a certain sound. After limited results or my kick sounding like a basketball ( lol ) I figure it's best just to buy good kick samples, also I got some plugins to make kicks. Still, I feel like do I even know how a kick is supposed to sound?? Obviously, there are different genres but even just a minor fraction of eqing on a kick drum produces something different and as a perfectionist I'm going in circles. I suppose that could be inexperience not knowing exactly what I'm trying to achieve just endlessly tweaking trying to find. Maybe between what I'm supposed to get from eq and compression are confused. The thing is I feel like it's pointless to even try to finish anything because if I can't make it sound perfect or commercial with just a few elements why waste my time trying to finish something I'd never want to release.
