Before watching the video, i'll answer the question. It's simply because other Scottish teams won't accept the pitiful transfer fees both old firm teams offer for their players. There is no way either of the old firm would hand another Scottish team £6m-£10m for a player, as that would mean that team could then go out and strengthen their squad significantly, thereby posing more of a challenge. The old firm want the imbalance to remain in Scotland, they have no intention of wanting a more even playing field. That's why they don't, buy from Scottish clubs any more.
You make that sound like we never buy Scots anymore but we do and as you said if we go for an upcoming star like Miovski Aberdeen would want £8-9M etc, but I reckon if Cellic splashed that cash in Jan they would be scoring more and probably still be ahead by more than a few and get a £15-25M return in a few yrs if he reaches his potential. But that big bit bank is not being spent until they know how many Millions are paid out to Torbett and Cairneys victims. I reckon the pay-out will be around 20_40M if each victim gets a mill or two each but knowing the US-style class action the celtic case is using as a blueprint for historical damages the millions that'll be relieved from the cfc bank will be nothing compared to a few transfer embargos success earned during abuse years stripped and many other club killing outcomes. Maybe when the victims of cbc are compensated the people abused by Dunn at my club will come out and sue then both clubs are brought to the rest of the SPFL level on finances for a while till fans replenish the club coffers.
There are literally zero players in Scotland outwith the OF who are worth £6m to £10m, the reason they don't buy Scottish players anymore is simply there are better players available for the same amount money.
@@flucazade they reason the OF don't buy players from Scotland anymore, is that all the good ones have realised they'll do better moving out of the country.
@@LHBH8 That's what I said, players outwith the OF aren't worth the money on the market , Ferguson was what £3m and Doig was a similar figure. I assume both deals have good sell on fees.
He can’t help being surrounded by pub players can he. Poor old bloke is 34 or whatever he is and dashing round pitch like prime Kante having to do every job
He's always been a smashing wee player, but he has his level. He had a spell where he did good for Scotland (as good as anyone else anyway) but we've always had players ahead of him
I’m truly fascinated with Scottish football and I have always been drawn to Aberdeen or Hearts and I have no idea why. I wish Scottish football could get a better funding to bring Scottish football up to break the rangers/celtic theme
Yes I'm celtic fan and I believe when big 2 us n that mob across city are in Europe we make tons money and we should maybe spread more money about . Or my idea is when we have split the money made Europe or percentage we give should be spread out between other 4 teams at top every season .. so celtic rangers if we give 10 million of 50 to 80 million we make each year from Europe if we give 10 million to 4 other teams in top 6 that be extra 5 million season for which ever teams in top 6 after split if both celtic n rangers give that amount .. and then you'd have Aberdeen hearts n whoever else makes top 6 consistently each year make them handy amount money to reinvest in team and that could be part of agreement for given money down other teams that needs be spent on team n transfers
@@JIMMYCFC sadly that’s not what modern players think about, it’s all about the ££££ and a player like Miovski will make more in the English championship than at Celtic
@@johnkeilloh2682 he'll earn even more in a top 5 European league, which is where he'll go. He'd be wasting his time moving to another Scottish side once he leaves Aberdeen
I was wondering about this after watching the Old Firm on the weekend, and I checked the squads of other SPL teams and saw some of the very players you mentioned. Glad to see your channel is taking off, I always knew it would.
Good video. The McGinn transfer was a watershed for Celtic. Lawwell didn't and wouldn't pay the cost of goods for a Scottish player because he knew how it would open up the market. None the less the market opened up and Celtic have missed on several Scottish talents since. Probably just should have signed McGinn and used the profits on a Ferguson, Hickey or Doig. But then probably should have signed Mccarthy, McArthur, McCormack, Berra and Fletcher back in 08 and easily recouped the profits then too.
In terms of Gers it needs to be said we were burnt by signing players like O'halloron, Hastie, Jones, Lafferty (2nd time) Boyd' (2nd time) and Docherty, either through not trusting them to play in important matches (Every match) or a lack of commitment. Even the most recent success stories are a little iffy. Souttar is good when he can actually play, same with Jack but both are constant sick notes. Wright while arguably being worth the 200k we paid has never really held down a starting 11 place and probably wont in the future.
Higher prices and better sell ons are major reasons non old firm clubs don’t sell to the old firm. McKenna made Aberdeen around £7m and “if” Ferguson is sold this season, he’ll net Aberdeen around €4m plus whatever the initial was. Miovski isn’t going to Celtic next season he’s got too long on his contract, and Celtic won’t pay the unfront nor the add ons Aberdeen will want.
Let’s be honest if most of the spfl clubs had the money rangers and Celtic can make they would all buy players outside of Scotland. Just most of the Scottish clubs don’t have the money to do it.
@@markdillon5494 yeah. Look at croatia, switzerland uruguay. All similar size to us. Except all their top players played for the countries biggest clubs. Here our captain got released because he was small
I do believe it's snobbery and arrogance. I remember when Celtic and Rangers would btch about English teams trying to hoover up talent on the cheap, but they now do the same. I think both teams would be stronger if they'd signed the apex local talent they've been linked with and (reportedly) lost through cheaping out. McGinn at Celtic and Ferguson at Rangers would make both stronger in Europe - these are European-level players. Instead, we roll the dice on "prospects" and wonder why we end up as Euro also-rans. Time to show respect to the league and pay these teams market-rate for players who can make a material difference.
Mickey mouse league with Mickey mouse players. They don't buy from within Scotland because there hasn't been a decent Scottish football player since the 00s, and even then there were only a handful of them. I'll give you that there were some top class Jock professionals in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but for a country so obsessed with football I really don't understand how you haven't produced a single player in twenty years who could even get on the bench for the England national team, let alone start. Even the Welsh have had players recently who could get in our team, doesn't that make you all feel a wee bit ashamed?
We've just bought Luke McCowan from Dundee, Our left back Greg Taylor we bought from Kilmarnock a better question is "Why do you blether pish mate"? and please stop including us with DeedCo there is entirely no comparison to be made, they're skint, we've got 77 million in the bank.
Derik has sead several times when he has been interviewed on the subject. Lewis is a massive Rangers fan & was desperate to go to Ibrox he even has a sesson ticket, according to his Dad. But absolutely no bid came in for him from any Scottish club Rangers or Celtic. And from what Derik sesd he has no plans to depart Italy anytime soon he is settled in Bologna & his proud to be there captain plus there fans adore him. Derek said he couldn't see a time any time before the later part of Lewis carrer as a player he will return home. It sounds like Lewis feels scorned to buy Scottish club football going buy what his Dad has sesd. I think Scottish clubs have missed the boat on Lewis Ferguson.
@@alanfox691 Barry also said Lewis would go to celtic in a second & him or Derek would have a problem with it but unfortunately we were thinking about it but didn't pull the trigger. He'd have been perfect replacement for Broony.
Great video that covers all the important arguments. The quota will be causing issues for both us and Rangers, but now, even if us or them want decent Scottish players, Serie A clubs are such a good option that first team football would have to be guaranteed to the player to get him in. And managers tend to think there are better, cheaper options. Of course, the bloated English football has led to Championship clubs being able to easily swoop for Scottish talent. Japanese players are far cheaper, and do the job, as proven. I think even Korean players would do well, if given consistent minutes. Of course, even as a non-Scot and a near life-long fan of East Asian football, I do think Celtic must have a UK-based core of players. But I believe it'd take a new manager to change trends.
It wasn't manager that signed the Asia boys .. was big ange that brought them all over even 1s from last summer had already signed agreement to come when ange was manager .. and most time I believe at celtic manger isn't havin final say on players coming in nowadays its all down marketing celtic signing these bhoys to then sell jerseys in Asia thats why think we will always have Asian player or 2 in team going forward now .. cause board know sells n makes sense to bank balance.. but I don't think Rodgers is massive fan of shopping over there he much prefers buy from were he knows which is loan's or players from championship lookin kick start career again after bad run.. I would like see us go central n south America yes we have bernebei but that's not worked out but there is good players over there . There is Brazilian players who aren't bein talked up n marketed to sell to big European clubs but would come here and do great job I believe
@@barryohara2099 I agree that Rodgers probably didn't want the Asians. And despite me wanting us to have Asian players, each manager should have the final say on whether a player comes or not. I don't think Brazilians want to come to Celtic, though. We just don't have a track record of successful South American players in general. We don't have the contact network etc.
I learned one thing in particular from this video. Hearts being bled dry of their best talent by the two Glasgow clubs. Quite sad. Shame they aren't financially strong enough to keep their best players.
Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hibs have also frequently had their best players poached by the ugly sisters in Glasgow - Hearts aren't anything special in this regard
To say that's just nonsense, admittedly O'Rielly will likely command the larger fee and is probably the better player but Todd's a quality player in his own right.
This has not aged well...cantwell looks like he will go for under 1 million, raskin barely gets a game! Meanwhile Mike Johnstone goes for 2.5 million and oh for 3million. And wait for it....orielly goes for 25 million with add ons😂😂😂
I said O'riley would fetch a profit. But I'll take the L on cantwell. Still think Raskin is a good player, just been unlucky with injuries I believe. Not sure what Mikey Johnstone or Oh have to do with this video...
As has been mentioned already - it does seem like other Scottish clubs are standing their ground with the bigger two, they will no longer just let them come in and piss £1mill or less at their very best players.... thanks to the sales of younger players to European leagues at decent fees and the watershed moment of Brown to Celtic.... they be wanting real money for talents that arguably aren't immediate first team starters for Celtic or Rangers
There is another element to the "trading" transfer strategy that you've missed: A rising tide lifts all boats. Historically other teams in Scotland resented the Old Firm for poaching talent, then proceeding to kill their careers by sitting them on the bench. This brought down the overall standard of the league as typically those teams relied on the income from those sales to stay afloat, rather than being able to reinvest that income into improving their squads. This helped the Old Firm retain their dominance, but it didn't do much for Scotland's UEFA coefficients, for the quality of the national team, or - crucially - for the value of a player coming out of the Scottish leagues. If the value of a player in the Scottish leagues is higher, the coefficients improved, and the national team successful then the Scottish leagues seem more appealing, which in turn widens the pool of players who would consider a move to Scotland; Poaching players from other Scottish teams undermines all of this, and it does appear that the Old Firm have finally realised it.
Talented Scottish players have bigger fish to fry these days. Old Firm have killed Scottish football. Their record Scottish signing is still Scott Brown nearly 20 years later. Honestly the Old Firm is a step sideways rather than a step forwards these days, and the only two teams to blame for that are Celtic and Rangers.
Missing out on John McGann was a huge mistake for Celtic. He would have been the perfect successor to Scott Brown. Buying Scottish talent shouldn't be about making money, it should strictly be making the team better. I always feel we lack Scots.
As soon as you mentioned the word “snobbery” I was right on board. There is a real arrogance around the OF duo and their attitude to buying from the SPFL these days. Somehow they’ve developed the idea that they are somehow above their own level, despite plenty evidence to the contrary.
scotrish football is such a mess. i mostly blame the spflqrstuv or whatever they call themselves. it's like they're actively trying to destroy the clubs. the scottish prem has very little influence on the national team. i hope as many scottish players move away
Excellent content, Rangers fan but the days of Scottish inhouse trading is done for me - for the most part. Regretfully there probably wont be a transfer like Scott Brown to Celtic again even though weve seen players with that potential Ferguson, McGinn etc.
Celtic will sign Lennon Miller from Motherwell in the summer. We've signed eh Taylor siegrist Hayes Turnbull ffs at one point we even signed the one the only fantastic NADIR CIFTCI. 😂
We need to be looking for much better than Shankland miofski. Spl standard at best. Spend 10 million again on a real prospect like edwourd back in the day
Another thing is they would want to build their league, better clubs more tv rights more clubs in Europe more money so why would they make teams around them worse
in other words not enough money in scottish football so foreign imports are a better option than the kings ransom demanded by domestic opposition. there isnt enough money to go around in scotland
It's hard for celtic & the Rangers to go for fairly untried players when we have to win EVERY game or there's murder. Even if they play well in Scotland doesn't mean they could handle the pressure or up it in Europe but I do hope at some point we go for it cause not only is it better to see one of yer own make it u also keep the money in Scotland so other teams can build then we gave a better league.
It's not good for Scotland in the long run, that's why we haven't qauilfly for a major tournament over 20 years plus. 2 I wouldn't sell my players on cheap either outside rangers&Celtic Teams should be using your youth system more instead of players buying to make it more easier.
Rangers fan here, Hearts might be the best run club in the country for cultivating and utilising the Scottish Market. Teams predominantly Scottish - to my knowledge anyway - and has managed to pull the best striker in the league and a few crackers alongside him. Should be the priority for Scottish clubs we want success across not only the league and Europe but the nation!
@@flashbackfootball1367 clear talented but if you are telling me you thought he had it in him go be named best midfielder in Seria A you should get into the scouting game my friend!
@@theboybrand Of course not, His development has been crazy in Italy. I'm saying he was talented enough for Rangers to try and sign him, although again in hindsight it's good he didn't as moving to Serie A has been the best decision he's made.
Not really, potential is often a huge player in these deals. When he broke through he performed well and was tall and fast. He actually started his first full season with Everton well before getting injured and now he seems to be done.
It's actually really frustrating to see so many Scottish talents slip through our fingers constantly. If cheap is the way we have to go surely it makes sense to do it in your own country? McGinn, Hickey and even Miovski are all players we could have signed for probably a combined £12 million which could easily turn into 40-50 in a few seasons. Same reason why I'm screaming for players like Vata to be given first team action or he will move away and another talent slips through us. Really hope we get Miller with O'Riley most likely going this summer.
Reason don't buy is partly snobbery cause think can get better player abroad more glamorous or something will appease the fans more when sign from abroad..but also players like Lewis Ferguson on thumbnail pic celtic or that mob wouldn't be able afford him cause he will be on decent wage over Italy so unless he is following his heart then big 2 can't get those players due finances
From what his Dad has sead several times he was desperate to go to Rangers, but no bid from any Scottish club was forthcoming.. His Dad has sead he is very much settled in Italy & and can't see him leaving until the later part of his playing carer even if them. Sounds from what his Dad has sesd he feels sund buy Scottish football listed to his Dad ser servrel times on this subject.
Question is, would those players such as McGinn or Ferguson develop as well by staying in Scotland and playing for the two Glasgow teams or would they have stagnated within our game?
No they wouldn't, any young player with a bit of ability should get out of Scotland as soon as possible. THe league is truly appalling with awful football played week in and week out.
Short sighted is definitely the term I would use personally. And this is why it will not happen overnight, but sooner or later, fans of both old firm clubs will feel a true disconnect between themselves & the squads both clubs have. How can anyone supporting both Old Firm clubs relate to players from Portugal, Japan, or Nigera, for example OK, you have a father & and son the son says to his husband.whare is that player from? "Son says the Dad that player is could whatever the players name he is from, say Portugal, but Dad, I am Scottish. Why is there no Scottish players playing for us today, the father we used to have Scottish players, but we dont have any now. Dad then how am I ever going to play for the incert club because I am Scottish? I am not Portuguese Dad says the son does that mean I should give up playing football all together. Just imagine that kind of conversation in years to come. What kind of message are both Old Firm clubs sending out to future fans 10 to 15 years from now they potential fans could be lost because of the disconnect between fans & club that this transfer policy has helped create. Both clubs do not represent anything to anyone now as far as why they were founded in the first place & the squad of players both Had. Rangers created buy 4 lads from Rosneath how moved to Glasgow for work during The Industrial Revolution how is that represented now with the team on the pitch not at all. Celtic found buy Irish immigrants for charitable purposes how are Celtic representing that with half the team from Japan last I checked Yokahama was not anywhere near Ireland or Glasgow. It's sad. From Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland..
Even a player like duk and miovski are two players Celtic are crying out for, both are physical and the thing we lack most up front this season I feel. £6 mill would have got both probably
My club Rangers aren't interested in buying players from rival clubs who voted to kick us out the league apart from the £50,000 spent on Scott Wright from Aberdeen which was sanctioned by the board to keep Steven Gerrard happy which i am ok with as we took one of Aberdeen's better players for not a lot of money and weakened them into the bargain. I don't want Rangers giving rival club's who despise us and wanted us dead and buried millions of pounds for their players ever again. WE ARE THE PEOPLE 🏴 🇬🇧
@@PXL007 I see that you are a fan of Greenock Morton who weren't a premier league club so played no part in voting to demote Rangers down to the fourth tier of Scottish football so if Morton did get promoted to the top division and let's say for arguments sake they got themselves into financial difficulties and went into administration then liquidation, i see no reason for Rangers to vote them out the league as we have no beef with clubs who weren't involved in the process of demoting us and are quite happy to do business with such clubs as we did when we bought Greg Docherty from Hamilton for around £300,000.
