“In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.” (1987) - Carl Sagan

@@gj9157 " Don't ask him, ask God." This is what the bible says: "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good." The motivation behind atheism isn't complicated. The belief allows you to do what you want without ever having to face God. I'm just calling the atheist's bluff. They try to mock Christians as being "unscientific" and believing something without evidence. Its actually the opposite. There is good evidence (including scientific evidence) for God. Yet atheists rarely can provide any evidence to support their point of view. Its usually just "yeah, but I simply lack belief..." Doesn't matter, you still need arguments based on evidence for why you "lack belief..." Or counters to the evidence that does exist.

If that is your belief, do you believe once religion is abolished, people will begin to act rationally? Can you name the positive benefits of a positive religion? What do I mean? A positive religion promotes its followers to behave in ethical unselfish ways. A negative religion pits us vs them with hatred and violence towards "them." The truth of science is that it describes the world of things, the "is" of matter and energy, time and space. Religion describes the human condition and it's "ought to's" All living systems transcend lower levels of molecular interactions because they become "processes" and are really no longer "things." Humans transcend the strict dictates of molecular forces through informational processing by highly complex nervous systems in 2 major ways-as the logical verbal thinking about, and emotional processing of individual, group, societal, and national experience .

Yes. Eugenics, stop wasting resources on the premature, the Downs and other inferior syndrome infants and the elderly, and all the non-productive lives which drain natural resources and damage the planet further through plastic waste from the health care industry, and the use of resources for mere pleasure seeking humans who do not serve the greatest good. That is the rational, logical, scientific way humanity should advance. No religion should oppose cyborgs, parthenogenesis, social control as China's social media experiment is doing for stability and control of thought and opposition. Harvesting organs from those whose beliefs cause trouble for those in need is a good use of the bodies of those whose minds have been corrupted by religious beliefs who will not be indoctrinated or modified through aversive behavioral modification techniques, into model citizens, to serve as examples for those who would believe in anything higher than the State. Once god is dead, humanity is free from the 10 Commandments and everything implied by Imago Dei, free from the ridiculous notion "all humans are somehow equal." Gone is sin, evil is merely what someone decides for themselves it is. End the nonsense of religion. All power to our glorious human and AI leaders.

There is not a preacher or priest in this country, who can say they "understand the bible." To interpret this ancient manuscript, you must not only be an expert in the three languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, but you must also understand the culture deeply, including all the nuances missed by outsiders. They don't see science and religion as mutually exclusive. Now I have to say that these are the thoughts of a non practicing Catholic of many decades. Right now we're seeing dictators use religion as a way to control the masses. So religion can be very dangerous and manipulative. I haven't seen the video, this is a reaction to the title only. And it is so true. From the English Collins Dictionary: _Science:_ 1. systematized knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimentation carried on in order to determine the nature or principles of what is being studied 2. any specific branch of scientific knowledge, esp. one concerned with establishing and systematizing facts, principles, and methods, as by experiments and hypotheses ⇒ the science of mathematics _Religion:_ 1. belief in a divine or superhuman power or powers to be obeyed and worshiped as the creator(s) and ruler(s) of the universe 2. expression of such a belief in conduct and ritual 3. any specific system of belief and worship, often involving a code of ethics and a philosophy ⇒ the Christian religion, the Buddhist religion, etc. No-one turns to religion if he wants to find out whatever about our world and its surroundings; no-one turns to science for spiritual expressions or experiences regarding his maker. The two are apples and oranges. Science can only observe our natural surroundings. Since God is supernatural by definition, God doesn't touch science and vice versa. Entirely incompatible.

I agree completely with everything Mr Harris says. The wonder and beauty of reality is indescrible. I only disagree with what he says about religion not changing. Theists like to think their faith and religion is immutable but not only does it change in them religion itself has been changing ever since the first human applied and IF to any part of reality. Religion changes by the day. New gods are created and old gods pass away. The god of Abraham started off as a bloodthirsty mountain thunder god. It evolved over time to be thought of as the only god by some who is responsible for everything. Literally everything. But as we learn we understand more and more things it definitely isn't responsible for. It pervey of control keeps getting smaller and smaller. Now to the point that it exists outside of space and time. That's quite alot of change. How does something claimed to be so immutable change so much under scrutiny? Simple. It never existed. It's a fiction whose definition is constantly under revisment. Great video.

Right. You can see how both belief in God and a belief in science complement each other but some say otherwise. And yet some of the greatest minds amongst us believed in thy God especially those who came along with inventions or other technology advances as well as those who bought their artistic skills to bare from Michelangelo’s paintings to others who knew God and expressed it in their paintings as well as musical prodigies. Most people who don’t believe in God do so for many reasons and yet Billions believe in God so how do Billions believe in Something imaginary? And many say it’s caused great harm in society but what if no one believed in God at all? What if everyone did as thy wilt? Do you actually think this world would be a better place? Imagine a world without God where everyone resorted to their basic animalistic needs and had to take from others to survive or joined in groups to take on other groups of people. A mad max kind of world would entail and yet that is what is coming our way as many walk away from God and millions and millions more don’t even bother to understand if God is a valid concept to adhere to. But it’s always let’s blame those who believe in God because they are the problem and not those who do whatever they want to and don’t care what their consequences are for doing whatever comes to mind.

What he said in the beginning is so true. In fact, one my girlfriends from high school and I used to go to this hill in a park and would(well, after hooking up usually, but ignore that part) just grab one of the blankets I used to keep in the trunk of Cherokee, and just look up at the stars, sometimes for _hours._ Sometimes we'd barely say a word to each other(especially after smoking a blunt or taking shrooms, or even as we were starting to come down off ecstasy. Sorry to reference drugs, but it did make the experience that much more incredible), and just let our minds wander to wherever our thoughts would bring us. Just contemplating the immensity, the incomprehensibly large number of galaxies, stars/solar systems, planets, many of which likely contain life that could so incredibly different from our own that we may not even consider it "life", contemplating why things are the way they are, why there's something instead of "nothing", what's "outside of" our universe, if there are other universes(or even an infinite number of universes), including countless versions of "me", or universes that are so different from ours, perhaps with different laws of physics, that we couldn't even imagine or comprehend them if we tried, whether or not we had free will, contemplating earth's history and thinking how crazy it would be if we could go back in time and film a Planet Earth style documentary on dinosaurs and other extinct animals, witness the revolutionary war, etc., etc. God, those were the freakin' days.

Our twenty-yr-old grandchild thanked me recently for the security she feels from being told while she had her life ahead of her the truth that she will someday die and never exist again. I think it horrific that we lie or let others lie to our children instead of empowering them for life while they're still young. My husband and I independently saw the lie and were finished with religion by the time we met in our late teens. Shortly afterwards, having agreed that life is finite, we decided to use whatever time we would have to understand everything possible about life, politics and the human condition. Imagine how positively evolved global thinking would be if every child was made aware of that option. I have a fictional Vatican story which says what I think, but the poet of the pair is my husband. So an idiot like William Lane Craig can claim that the he believes that the ancient Israelites committed a genocide against the Canaanites, and can claim it was a justified genocide. @@oldpossum57 Sure, the bible appears to be the collected works of oral tradition passed down from generation to generation. The form of the Christ story is found something near 20 times in other cultures (Milthra, Osiris, etc). So the bible is a collected work of many writers, there's no way it would be considered coherent and rational as you were saying. But fragments of the bible are of great value. The gospel of john for example is a great mediation on the paradox of consciousness (R. Steiner). Most of the text I'm interested in though are pre-christian Gnostic texts such as Thunder Perfect Mind (Sophia the 36th archon). The more I get into the obscure texts, the more it becomes apparent that the ancients were not being literal in their stories, they are metaphysical meditations and allegories, generally limited to interpretation.

@@twobrainedserpent All of which is quite lovely. My favourite ancient texts are the Greek playwrights and Homer. While I am sure I read it with modern eyes, the critical insight of the late Charles Segal at Yale tells me my reading of Oedipus Tyrannus is not unreasonable, and certainly better than the hackneyed late Victorian Christian reading by Butcher and others. There are compelling bits of the NT, and the arc of the Christ story is obviously profoundly compelling. As a narrative, as a myth, it is a brilliant expression of human suffering and human desire. That said, our old understandings are drawn from the naive human mind. They are anthropocentric. Their actors are anthropomorphic, their mythic plots are human. I think we are at a place when we need to realize that our minds are those of highly social hunter/ gatherer apes, using three pound monkey- meat brains. Our scientific awareness is such that we can see ourselves as one primate species on a planet that is one of the rare ones to develop any life, let alone conscious life. One group of mathematicians, working out the odds of the Fermi paradox, suggested it is just possible that so far intelligent life like ours has only happened once. And in five million years* or less, will be no more. With that perspective, the “blue dot” perspective, I don’t think it especially valuable to be anthropocentric any more. * E. O. Wilson wrote that this was the average span for a mammalian species.

There may even be something in there about energy and matter manipulation. The writings of what not and what to do were so much easier to follow than trying to explain the science behind them at that time. Fast forward to now, shouldn’t science be able to stitch together some theory or explanation why the Bible mentioned this or that? If not, then clearly we are still newbies trying to pretend to be masters of a science we really know nothing about… yet.

But either they believe that the resurrection is just a metaphor or that the second law of thermodynamics can be broken at whim. If the latter, they are intellectual cheats. At the heart of all religious thought is magical thinking, irrational thought. Scientific thinking pushed the magic out. Laplace pushed gods out of cosmology around 1800: On n’a plus besoin de cette hypothèse. Darwin, trained for the Anglican priesthood, pushed gods out of the realm of biology. Crick, Watson & Franklin found the true mechanism of evolutionary variation. Freud, Adler, Jung started us on the road to understanding the human psyche. Richard Leakey and others showed how we descended from apes. Comparative human sciences explain why it is that we invent religions and gods. I cannot see any remaining purpose for your gods. There is no evidence of a god. Hence the fact that all societies have ethics proves there is a moral sense that originates in our primitive instincts. Every society comes to certain core beliefs. All societies protect their own against violence from within or from without. It is usually bad to kill or injure “us”, and acceptable under other circumstances to kill and harm “them”. Even today, army chaplains bless soldiers instead of risking death to prevent violence. Whereas rational thought within cultures has extended the sphere of “us” not only to all humans (in theory), but also to animals and the planet itself. Understanding how human ethical systems really work, instead of imagining an absolute set of prescriptions from a god, allows us to understand why we actually have moral quandaries about circumcision, abortion, capital punishment, gun ownership, military service, wars,. The inhospitable universe killing 250,000 in 2004 tsunami makes sense. The “mysterious ways of gods” are not good explanations. Science can explain why people do harm to others. Religions cannot.

Video starts with Lawrence Krauss conflating significance with size... Then follows opinion that science empowers. Not disputing that, but how does science empower anyone in a deterministic universe? How does that work? Rest of video, at least to me, just shows how science can't really engage properly with categories like meaning and purpose. Then, in this sense, science and religion can be seen as being incompatible. But in the sense that religion and science are incompatible in that it's necessary to abandon one or the other (or you may be needing to suppress cognitive dissonance or "compartmentalize") then that's just not the case. A religious/theistic person would do science with nothing to fear, being confident that nothing discoverable would contradict his/her belief but only further elucidate how this universe and those in it work. Such a religious scientist could even seek "divine inspiration" for the work they're doing. The video ends with Krauss explaining how "lawful" and intelligible the universe is. He then asserts that there's no need to invoke an intelligence, or God for this. Why? He seems to me to be arbitrarily drawing a line beyond which investigation should cease.....

Can love be explained using science? Can science ever be the whole story or only ever part of a continuing story/discovery? Is science knowledge that's built upon and therefore always limited and changing? If the mind is limited and science is of the mind then science is also limited, right? If psychology is science of the mind and the mind is the reason the worlds messed up and disordered, how can we then think to fix it with science of the mind, psychology? Anything that only offers a partial solution will keep humanity forever in it's disordered state, it's conditioned mind or the contents of our mind. Listen to Lawrence Krauss arguments, these will likely repeated again in a similar way a thousand years from now. These arguments our coming from our limited mind made current reality. It's beyond our current conditioned state of mind (we need to acknowledge this) where the reality lies that is actually factual and choice-less. This is because we have come to know the place of our mind as a tool to figure out matter (mind is matter), to figure out things using science. Science then is seen for what it is, an experience something we pass through something that comes and goes and is therefore insignificant compared to the reality discovered within us a oneness with everything inside and outside of us that words can never explain and where there is no need for words..... Listen to J Kristnamurti and find freedom by dying to your current conditioned state or to the contents of your mind

Most people have the propensity for both good and evil behavior, and their actions are dependent upon an infinite possible range of circumstances affecting their immediate needs. But despite our actions, it’s easy to convince oneself that an imaginary God recognizes a “believer” as a good person, because it’s terrifying to know that our sun brings forth life and delivers death to all life in our solar system without bias toward any value we assign to anything.

If a cluster of galaxies were actually 5 billion light years away from us, you would never even come close to being able to observe it in a lifetime because the speed of information is too slow. That's how we know that the universe is in us, not vice versa as these scientists believe.

@@Seticzech Scientists, not all scientists, believe there is an observer, that actually exists, separate from observations. It is a false assumption. Scientists resist this fact because science is about observers explaining reality. You've heard them say "shut up and calculate"? They believe that matter, the observer, generates consciousness, generates information. If that's true then you would only be able to see 100 light years of of the universe if you lived for 100 years. Information speed is 186,000 miles per second.

So, if Dawkins says the encoding of DNA base sequences is digital, ( actually, not binary or base 10 but base 64) and a simple life form of 50 proteins 50 a.a. long ( not counting the 64! ways to fill in the codon to amino acid relationship called the genetic code) is 1 in 64^50*50, which is far greater than scientific criterion of any critical, crucial event must be less than 10^120 ( odds of randomly picking 1 specific proton in 10^10 universes) how do you explain the creation of life on Earth, twice ( review the DNA (or, RNA world) mechanisms plus the need for all the hardware with 10,000 preloaded tRNA molecules each correctly loaded with one specific amino acid? No self-copying anything can randomly generate the proofreading and DNA repair systems, without there can be no evolution... The evidence demands a Superintelligence which created it all. The properties of quarks are part of how spacetime behaves. Review the filling of electron s,p,d,f orbitals ( and they overlap!) as the proton number increases in the Periodic table. Only the precision of quark/EM/ gluon/electron charge, mass, velocity, can permit that. Review the number of spectral lines of hydrogen. Again, quark/electron precision. Some Easter Bunny or Sky Daddy to pull off those feats. Smarter than Bill Gates, Watson, and Crick combined. And smarter than all the particle physicists on Earth, combined. We don't even know what space and time really are, or energy, or gravity. All we can do is describe relationships. Doubt me? Take what I have written to a molecular biologist and quantum physicicist. Their standard answer is, " we don't know yet, but scientific progress eventually will." Not what the statistics show. Disprove a Superintelligence. Anyone can shoot the Easter Bunny full of holes. Even Elmer Fudd.

Do you give some respect when the reality of the situation is their parents didn't tell them about Santa or the Easter Bunny and they managed to get all the way to high school (and possibly somehow past) without any friends bringing up the question or teachers bringing it up? My former high school teacher told us the story of the time he broke the news to a 10th grader as he assumed the whole class knew. Some other stories I've read also have sad backstories related to the kid's home life.

Maybe do a vid of just YT atheists like Aron Ra, Seth Andrews, Paulogia, etc. Or maybe make one that only includes female speakers. Whatever you fancies you, but you have been showking Hitches, Harris, Krauss, and Dawkins ALOT recently lol.

This comment section is quite a bit depressing in how lonely I feel browsing. No one's an absolute skeptic, they all think they got the answers. Its easier to start a conversation about aliens existing than it is about religion. Seems the only reason theists ever respond is some recruitment scheme, no one wants to help someone wonder about reality its self if it takes them elsewhere. The atheists are far better but these types of discussions are usually uninteresting to them, only had two atheists who were fun to talk to in terms of religion. All the others made it more fun to talk hobbies and sports.

Why does theology fight so hard? Does that extra dollar really mean that much to you? I see religion as a way to be little you until you feel unworthy. How does one get that feeling of being worthy? By giving up your hard earned money to someone just acting on a stage. Go to religion without money and see how long religion lasts.

Science does create spititual wonder. It points to God. The original founders of science were pretty much all Christian or at least believers in God. It was their belief in God that led to science because they expected to find order in nature because it was created by a mind. Its understandable why Krause would say atheism would be liberating. Its because then you think you never have to worry about facing God.

“The founders of science were all Christian.” Bullshit! Many famous scientists were christians because of this accident: they lived in modern Europe when there was no other way to explain the existence of life than to invent gods. The prevailing culture was Christian so they were christians or Jews. Their religion did not lead them toward science. Likewise you might note these people were males: that is because women of the time were not educated. The Chinese and Indians and Arabs were doing math, astronomy and chemistry when the christians were living in squalid mud huts. The history of science and the history of democracy and of progress is the history of disbelieving in magical beings. Your god is now a completely unnecessary imaginary beast.
