For some reason, they let me interview the one and only Ken and Roberta Williams, founders of Cygnus Entertainment and a little-known start-up from the 80s called Sierra On-Line. In this part, Roberta talks about why she came back to the games industry after the personal and professional disappointment of King's Quest 8.

Stone cold legends. As a young man, I chased the dream of a job in the game industry, but it slowly became apparent that the game industry I fell in love with no longer existed. Because it died with Sierra.

This is awesome… my first computer was an IBM compatible with an intel 8088 cpu and CGA graphics card…kings quest and black cauldron were my first games. Ken and roberta started PC gaming for me. No one outside of their company could make adventure games as good as king’s quest, space quest, police quest, leisure suit larry, etc.

Great interview! I felt so bad for Roberta when she discussed her departure from Sierra. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was a big fan of Ken and Roberta. I adore the King's Quest series and even with all it's faults, I enjoyed KQ VIII. Glad they are coming back.

Probably the best Roberta&Ken post-CC3D announcement interview I've heard yet. I would be lying if I said I didn't get a wee bit emotional hearing how Roberta was hurt after the new management took over and pushed the ORIGINAL FOUNDERS out of their own company. In a smaller way I had a similar experience at my (former) job where I was pushed out by new management after 16 years of blood/sweat/tears. Feels so good to see Roberta and Ken back even if it is for one last hurrah (but hopefully we will get more games!). Looking forward to the next part!

@lou7139
@lou7139 2 года назад
@@spacequesthistorian Don't beat yourself up about it. Remember, the reason it was painful is because the new management DIDN'T listen to her and just went their own way on KQ8's design. If they actually let Roberta properly lead and design the game like she always had, it probably would have been much better.

Hey, Ryan here, I just wanted to say that Ken and Roberta have been a massive presence in my life since I was a child. I learned to read, and write with the help of the King’s Quest series. Roberta’s absence from the gaming industry has been truly felt. It’s so sad to hear how hurt she was by the fall out of KQ8 - I actually really like that one - but it’s also wonderful that she’s back in the gaming world now. I wish Ken and Roberta a second round of success and I can’t wait to play Colossal Cave! I hope it’s the first of many new Roberta adventures!

This interview is criminally underwatched. Will try to promote it! That being said. What an amazing opportunity and insight into the minds of these wonderful people. Roberta is hands down my greatest inspiration when it comes to video game design. The fact she out of the blue decided. I'm making a video game. And not only succeeded, but managed to change the face of adventure gaming as a whole. Talk about an achivement! It really does break my heart to hear the pain she went through in the end of Sierra. I want to reach out through the screen and give her a big hug. For whatever failure that amounted to, all they accomplished prior to that completely eclipses it in my personal opinion. But at the same time it's makes her even more wholesome that it affected her so much. There's no ego there. A truly beautiful person. I'm really glad you got the chance to meet and talk to them. I don't think I could have kept my composure and would have rambled like a star struck kid :P

These games were awesome and a big part of a lot of people's lives. I watch speed runs of these games and a periodic question that seems to come up, is what Roberta would think of people beating these games in such dizzying speeds. Does she ever answer that in an interview, I would love to hear her thoughts on it.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian Год назад
I think she's happy that people are still enjoying playing her games but I don't think she keeps up much with what's going on in the wild world of speedruns. To her, the King's Quest games are a thing of her past that she's proud of but they're behind her now. That's speculation on my part, sure, but that's the vibe I got from talking to her.

I'm very glad all this is being done. I hope they have an Easter egg with the Sierra dome rock logo spinning in 3D somewhere. Also, I realize Ken is an old salty sea captain now, but please keep the language clean in these videos - Ken rubbed elbows with Jeff Bezos and was inches away from being the one that built online retail. CUC ruined that opportunity (and it is completely appropriate what the modern urban dictionary meaning of that name has become!). Also remember Roberta is an author. Looking forward to what adventure they're cooking up - I'm not a huge fan of VR, but I'm glad history will be able to say that Sierra was part of the early days of VR (not the very beginning, but you know what I mean - it's not like Virtuix is a household item yet). A collaboration with Sid Meier's would be cool too (aside from SimCity, etc, Sid also made CPU Bach -- let him do some audio tracks for the game ;) ).
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 2 года назад
Thanks for your compliments. I'm sorry to say I will not be keeping my language clean, not now nor in the future, because that's just who I am and how I talk. Restraining myself feels disingenuous, and if someone has a problem with a few f-bombs here and there, I honestly am of the opinion that that's their problem, not mine.

@@spacequesthistorian Exercising prudent constraint was one of the hallmarks of Sierra's appeal. When interviewing living legends, who made kids titles like Mixed Up Mother Goose, a bit of formality is warranted. I recall the sections in Ken's book where he talks about trying to be a wholesome company (e.g. avoiding titles like Motal Kombat), I never once considered him disingenuous about that. It's why I enjoyed the KQ 2015 reboot so much, it resonated with that sentiment (my daughter still talks about the puns, it's nice having content to share kids and grandkids).
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 2 года назад
@@voidstar1337 Sierra put out games like Gabriel Knight, Police Quest 4,and Phantasmagoria 2 that all had swear words in them. I don't think the Williams' are strangers to that kind of language. And, furthermore, I'd like to think I was both respectful and courteous to them both.

It is funny it never even occurred to me to blame Roberta for KQ8, more that it was the result of trend chasing which is a source of mediocrity in the AAA gaming space to this day. KQ8 was just so out of step with the previous games I figured it wasn't how she wanted to design it.
