The fact this setting was discussed back between Volumes 1 and 2 just shows Monty's influence is still alive and strong. I hope he's proud of how the team has tried to carry on his vision.
People who keep saying that "they are ruining Monty's work" clearly don't understand how much planning went into rwby at the beginning. How much of this had been planned out way ahead of time while Monty was still with us. Not to mention the arrogance that people think they knew Monty better than his friends and family.
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was when they originally said between V1 and 2 go to this place between the fall of atlas and what comes next, and i thought they were meaning the end of volume three. when they then said and we got to the end of v8 with the fall of atlas, i realised i had been thinking of the fall of beacon and that the general story had been decided so long ago.
Though i can believe the main plot points were planned, everything in between and smaller plot points has been really rough. I want them to keep trying and improve too but rwby feels more and more detached from being a passion project sometimes.
Not to mention it's a very disrespectful thing to insinuate about a dead they never met. It's not good to use his name to justify their opinions, especially when it drags his family's grief into it. Their opinions should stand on their own. Regardless if you like or don't like the direction the show is taking now, that's fine. Just leave the dead man out of it.
Plans change as time goes on, like how they were supposed to group volumes into seasons and they didn't do that. It was only natural that the plans were always going to change without Monty's input when he passed away. Not to mention that we don't actually know how much was actually planned, we can only speculate at best and frankly you're a hypocrite for acting like you know all this better than they do while complaining about people thinking they know Monty's original plans better than they do.
This show has meant a lot to my brother and I over the past couple years since we lost our dad. I want to say thank you to the entire RWBY team and the people in this video for all their hard work. You guys are amazing and I look forward to what's in store this volume for Team RWBY.
To think that every volume to come has been planned since the beginning of the show is so surreal...Can't wait to see the end of the show and what lies ahead of our girls. Thank you, guys for everything 😭😭😭
Always been a big fan of the Alice in Wonderland IP, from the og Disney movie to Alice: Madness Returns and Ever After High. I'm super hyped that my all-time favourite show is now doing its own take. Can't wait!
Absolutely loved the first episode I was SO happy they all reunited immediately. Pleasant surprise. Great for the writers not to spend the whole volume with them separated, so we can just get to it Learned from their mistake eh🤣 [ *Everyone liked that* ]
I’m glad they are taking a bit of a needed step back, but also excited to see the character development and what’s in store for team RWBY in these fairytales
It's always been hinted and teased at for years, can't believe it's actually happening. Volume 9 looks great so far, can't wait for the rest of the volume
Yes for sure dude. It’s always been confirmed wayyy before 8/9 came tho lol, You should be excited to know I believe they’ve confirmed a greenlight it for up to Volumes 12, iirc at least. Rwby makes too much money for them, not gonna go away so quick unless something happens haha. Search up an article for it & it should tell ya some of the info I got! Tons of future content coming our way. There’s even a _Rwby x Justice League_ movie coming out April 25th! Excited af for that…
@@insidious7329 Imagine saying something so incorrect with so much confidence. If you want to hear this kind of stuff for yourself, just go buy the blu-rays and listen to the commentary tracks. You can hear Miles, Kerry, and Monty talk about hints to all kinds of things they planned ahead on all throughout the Volumes. Salem's origin and the dark history of Remnant is hinted at by them back in the Volume 1 commentary, Pyrrha's death is practically confirmed in the Volume 1 commentary, Maria is hinted at in the Volume 2 and Volume 5 commentaries, The Apathy is hinted at in the Volume 4 commentary, and much, much more. They are also very, very open and honest about the things that they did change their mind on or that they did come up with on the fly, because that is simply apart of the writing process. Writing is an iterative process and every writer worth their salt will tell you that good writing doesn't begin happening until the rewrite. So having said all this, I hope it's obvious to you that there would be absolutely zero reason for them to pretend that they had been thinking about "doing an Alice in Wonderland thing" for a while now. Hell, Miles and Kerry flat out stated for everyone on the Volume 3 commentary that the Maidens (which are now one of the most fundamental components of the show) were something that Monty just came up with between Volumes 2 and 3, and that adding them in of course required them to rewrite a lot of Remnant's backstory and modify a lot of their future plans for the series. If they were willing to admit that on the commentary, why do think they would feel the need to lie about this fairytale world? Does that logic track for you?
@@muzzaXD The blu-rays are fantastic if you're at all into any part of the creative process. Both the Behind the Scenes features and the Director's Commentary tracks have them going super in-depth to their whole process.
This volume will definitely be interesting. I wonder how Ruby will change after the volume perhaps she will finally remember her memories that she has been suppressing since volume 3 and finally use her silver eye powers to its full potential to get them home .
I missed monty oum so much. He was always a legend among legends. I believe it'll be so great that the 9th volume of RWBY. I do hope what's happening next in RWBY volume 9.
But it is....just because they used a different term like "breather volume" it is still a filler cos this volume is not really contributing to the main story as in how to defeat the big villian aka salem.
@@MrDJFlyHi. The “terms” they used that you’re whining ab isnt even the point. Its the content within that OP is referring to. Simple words Crwby said doesnt make or not make something filler, so weird point to make Character-focus chapters also doesn’t automatically make the volume filler, if it’s adding to the story as a whole. Salem isnt the *whole* story, just bc she’s the main antag. It’s always been ab 4 teen huntresses on Remnant, it’s in different synopsis about the show even. They obviously have to “level up” _to_ fight her in the first place. They have character flaws to get through, as well as the bettering themselves physically via upgrading gear & semblance evolution, to actually fight her.. It’d be a pretty lame & bland story if it was as cut & dry as that. The story would just be 2 volumes…Train, blah blah, fight Salem, the end. Don’t know why you would want that but alrighty. eh we all want different things, nothing wrong with that. Have a nice day
@@MrDJFlyHi That isn't actually the definition of filler. Filler is literally material not in the original source. In other words, filler is stuff staff writers make up to let the manga or book series catch up. RWBY has zero filler. Character development is not filler. It's progression of the individual plot lines that make up the main story and feed the build up to the finale.
@@Tw0Dots this show has always had a strict narrative. The least focused its been has been seasons 1 and 2 and that was because we simply thought cinder was the main villain. If this breather season is for more personal character moments in a show that mainly followed these characters they're doing a bad job
Neat little video. Hope season nine is good. Nice seeing something like RWBY take off and when it eventually ends, we will have some great memories. Keep on trying to make stuff that you (and the fans) enjoy.
@@billduncan5662 So... What? You only care about the big fights? Character development is vital to a show also. It's kind of hard to do that in the middle of a fight.
It’s the ‘Breather volume’ and ‘Step away from the main plot’ type talk that gets people thinking that. I mean.:if you hear a story is diverging from its main plot, there’s only so many conclusions you can draw and it typically is just labeled as filler
I really appreciate this video. I love the writers breaking down the thought process and even showing how much planning goes into what they're writing.
Between mergers, the pandemic, and general shifting of the overall industry I'm Happy to see Rwby is back and I do hope with all my heart you guys get to see it all the way to the end and keep moving forward beyond.
Unlike a lot of other things, particularly in animation, RWBY is a money machine when it comes to merchandising so I'm pretty sure it's going to be fine.
Hm, I see, it’s a okay start so far, i really hope this Volume does ultimately turn out well and i hope you can stand by what you’ve said. Anyway, I appreciate to hear your commentary about it and i will look forward to see how this Volume will go further, I hope to hear more of you as we go on too.
Man the show bible that Monty developed before he died laid things out way further in advanced than any of us thought. He basically had a ten year plan and Miles and Kerry just needed carry it out.
I hope people stop with the stupid "Miles and Kerry ruined Monty's vision" thing at this point. Since the beginning they've said there were 12 seasons worth of material, and it's clear from this that the broad strokes have been planned out the whole time.
I really hope they use the opportunity presented by this volume to really focus on character and relationship building. I've noticed they've already been bringing elements of their character's to the forefront in the first couple of episodes and I think that's a good sign.
It is a good thing, but we shouldn't have needed to go to the Everafter to do it. I really don't see what point the Everafter even plays. Just send them all to Vacuo and do the character development there. Granted it's development that should've been done a long time ago.
While I'm fully excited and eager to see what they have in store for the rest of Vol 9... I can't help but still be scared/worried for both Ruby and Jaune.... Hoping its just my dumb paranoia and nothing that bad is gonna happen.
I like the idea of Ever After, I'm just worried about how big of time skip might happen with the vacuo crew. I really don't want it to be like 'Oh time is wonky in Ever After so it's been 10 years!'
@@fortitudo-9552Really wasnt. Just was changed because you people love to see girlxgirl stuff. So much that it ruined two of the four title characters lmao.
@@thespy6707 hun... its been there from the start... yang and blake have always interacted in a semi attached way, even how yang is written as a mirror of last love interest adam, their powers, their personalities, the only thing thats different is that yang doesnt abuse her. The first words yang said to blake were complimentary, at least as far as i remember i think they first spoke at the sleepover thingy. Then at the team building ceremony, a blake rushes past yang in a blur right before the ursa attack, she was following her, which, very much broke the rules of the ceremony, and she was following cause she wanted to know for sure what yang was like, and then she springs in after. tho... the bumblebee fandom is... very intense, tho i think some of that comes from just, a bunch of people being dismissive of them, like, when you talk over someone, they tend to shout in response, and, coulda felt pretty personal, as the denial of a canon thing, could feel a lot like, people trying to deny gayness exists, cause, here it is, and its being seen as "fake" or only there cause its being pushed by a community... but like, there is no reason for a company to change their plans for a vocal minority. EA wont even change for its entire consumer base, Could the relationship have been written better, for sure, i think they even stated that themselves, and i wish it was too, but, that doesnt mean that no signs existed, just that those signs were a bit harder to read unless you understand the feeling personally. big ramble but yeah,
They should've built up their main characters along with the plot progression and so that they grow and react to the events happening around them, instead of trying to shove everything in at the last minute with this disconnect storyline. After 10 years with constant character *regression* they suddenly want to make their main characters the focus. Something they should've been done. Given how much they failed at doing that I don't know why we're supposed to believe they're going to do that after constantly NOT doing that. Yeah cool Alice in wonderland rip-off. This stuff isn't what I'm primarily thinking about right now. It's zero connection to the world as far as I know, I doubt anything here is going to matter the moment they leave.
... They have been. For a single example- Yang CONSTANTLY since Volume 5 has been pushing for the truth and hates being lied to. Pissing yourself and relying on exact wording will do nothing but humiliate you.
@@KnightofChaosDeck That's a reaction to being lied to. That's not character development, it just hasn't happened. You clearly don't know what "character development" is trying and failing to use examples for characters who's constantly been shortchanged.
@@KnightofChaosDeck That's not character development, that's the fucking bar. They've had 8 seasons to have these characters grow and change, to mature and react to the world around them changing. Instead, they've wasted that time, over and over again. Bringing in so many side characters for half a season, piling more and more names and faces into the world to the extent that none of them have time to actually shine. Do you remember the half a season spent on team CFVY, whom we haven't seen in 8 years? What about the shoehorned in characters for Kerry and Miles, who had a bulk of season 3 wasted on them, and who we haven't seen in years also. Neptune was brought in to give Weiss a chance to be girly, which was a complete waste of time. When Jaune needed a weapon upgrade,, they had an opportunity for RubyY, a character they had set up as being this badass weapon engineer, who had designed and manufactured her own scythe-sniper rifle, to step up and show off those skills, have a montage of her building Jaune a weapon. But no, the writers either forgot that they had written that in, or just didn't think it was worth the time, so they went to a no-name blacksmith shop and spent 3 minutes on it, when they could have spent 5 minutes and had meaningful character interaction and growth. I'm not saying RWBY is all bad, but they consistently have wasted time and disappointed me. Every time the show starts to get good, they either go backwards with the characters they have, or they add more in that I know we will never see again.
@@insidious7329 ... "Yang: Do you… (loud exhale) Do you think we should've told Ironwood about Salem, before he put so much on the line for Amity? Blake: Sounds like you do. Yang: (sighs) I trust Ruby, but I think he deserves to know what he's stepping into. We all did." I didn't know Yang was secretly Ironwood the entire time. Funny considering that she told the truth to Robyn, something James didn't want to do. But then- Your argument completely implodes. Especially since there is a thread in this same comment section of me detailing all four girl's development. So I know that's not it.
@@chris31795 ... No, I remember Team CFVY having a grand total of seven appearances in Volumes 1-3 (Jaunedice, Field Trip, Breach, Lesson Learned, Destiny, Battle of Beacon and Heroes and Monsters). Which never took up more than half an episode other than maybe Lesson Learned. And mind you, this is a rather generous list since for most of these (Jaunedice, Field Trip, Destiny and Battle of Beacon)- It's actually just Velvet playing a small part. And you gotta love that you brought up Neptune, who was a joke for most of his run playing more bit parts. The dude had a grand total of two major events- being the catalyst of the Dance Arc with Jaune, Weiss and Pyrrha (Two of whom were the actual focus of the arc given that it resolves with Jaune making up with Pyrrha) and the NDGO fight. Also gotta love you blaming Miles and Kerry...even though most of Neptune's focus was in his debut Volume 2...that MONTY was in charge of. Try to not make it so obvious you're taking your arguments from Hbomberguy. And while the part with Ruby and Jaune is your strongest argument...that doesn't mean much. What, exactly, would having Ruby work on Jaune's weapon actually do? Emphasize her love of weapons, which was referenced a grand total of ONCE before this moment and was really just shorthand for 'quirky and introverted cute girl!' To say nothing of how EVERYONE in the RWBY universe minus Jaune made their weapons- This is not unique to Ruby. She is not uniquely skilled and nothing is known to indicate it. Talk about Pyrrha, which would be shown in the Volume 4 with her and Jaune anyway? And take out one of the few instances of the show showcasing a life outside of the Kingdoms, thus making RWBY's worldbuilding worse? It's redundant. The trait of Ruby's never comes up again and doesn't tie into her character aside from it's stereotype and the aftermath of Pyrrha's death is already demonstrated through several looks and the scene of Jaune and Ruby in Kuroyuri in Volume 4. Maybe you can do something with the scene but the things involved (Pyrrha's aftermath, Ruby's love of weapons, Jaune) are done elsewhere already and in the Ruby case- is superfluous just like those moments you take so much issue with. Have you ever stopped to consider the issue might not be with the show but with you? That maybe you're too attached to minor aspects or certain tropes and cliches? It's not like you'd be alone- I hate Evangelion for being so different than Gainax's other works, which I vastly prefer. But I know my criticisms wouldn't help a thing and don't act pissy about it.
I love the idea of a fairy-tale world that has its own fairy tales, and then seeing the fairy-tale world based on THOSE fairy tales. It's like fairy-tale-rabbit-hole-inception.
The saddest thing is that this is also just a tacit admission that RWBY is not worthy of focus or relevance in the main plot should it continue. In V8 alone they had enough time to sit and drink tea, isolate Ren/Yang/Jaune, gave Blake and Ruby time for talk, resolved Willow and Whitley, covered Marrow and Winters turns, gave Cinder a full dress down etc etc There is an abundance of damn time for RWBY to receive focus and development. But they’re either not relevant enough (as main damn characters) to receive the available time or the writers just don’t want to do it or are to lazy to do it.
This. I really don't think that RWBY will get much development considering they didn't care to develop their main characters for 9 years yet we're supposed to believe oh NOW this time they're getting development for real this time ?
You know I gotta love that you act like this is admission that they can't be focused on or relevant...even though that comment was about the emotional side of things not being the focus. While your examples involve the main characters, an admission that you're wrong and just haven't actually thought anything through.
@@KnightofChaosDeck Nowhere did I say my example was development for those characters. Just that there was an opportunity present at those points. They just weren’t used for the mains. Or (in Willows case) they only succeed in making them abhorrent. Yang/Jaune/Ren doesn’t actually develop any of them. Blake just kisses Ruby’s ass. Neither of them learn or change in that scene. Willow only confesses she has had the means to stop Jacques for years and has done nothing. Weiss hasn’t changed or developed since V1 her circumstance have.
@@DB6195 "There is an abundance of damn time for RWBY to receive focus and *development*. But they’re either not relevant enough (as main damn characters) to receive the available time or the writers just don’t want to do it or are to lazy to do it." Yes, yes you did set that as one of your goals. You even focus ON development here. Yang never showed any interest in the truth or being lied in the first four Volumes. It was only after Raven brought it up that Yang would have that aspect of her characterization. Blake had a tendency to hide her problems and run away in the first few Volumes, something she doesn't do now. Weiss constantly got into arguments with others and acted defensively when it came to her family's company (see: her huffing at Blake's comment about their labor practices in Volume 1) whereas now she's not confrontational and actually accepts the actions of her family's business. And Ruby...If I go on another rant about how difficult it is to be in Ruby's position, that no, her comment to Blake in Volume 1 was NOT a sign of her being mature unlike her monologue at the end of Volume 4 and how she's demonstrated a wider array of emotions in Volume 4 onward- I'm pretty sure the world will crack open from my sheer frustration. Not even going into Jaune, Ren and Nora who you've implied are main characters. Two of whom WERE developed in Volume 8 and Jaune can't be developed because many people take that a sign to send Miles death threats. Hell, your own specific examples bite you in the ass. 'Sip tea' And deal with the Hound where the reveal of the Hound using humans as a base feed into Ruby's break right before Penny's virus acts up again. Or that we revisit the more emotional and rash side of Ren even though he's heavily characterized as the calm and collected type, how he feels about the situation and his relationship with Nora. And part of Whitely's resolve was his antagonism with Weiss, meaning she was also involved. Funny how your problem gets solved when you pay attention. Almost like the effort WAS put in, you just refused to acknowledge it. And in that case- Why bother trying? You get the same result no matter what so why try? P.S. Before you try saying 'I never said they were never developed'- Nowhere in this conversation did you say that this was just a recent problem. You actually say the opposite with Weiss. And implied it with 'V8 alone', implying it wasn't done in previous, less easy to do Volumes. If that is what you meant, you would have said something like 'In recent Volumes' or 'recently' or 'lately'.
@@KnightofChaosDeck Wow you just woke up today and chose stupid. > Yang never showed any interest in the truth or being lied in the first four Volumes. It was only after Raven brought it up that Yang would have that aspect of her characterization. Because it was never an issue before then. This is like saying someone revealing they have a fear of wasps is development when its actually just that they haven't been around them yet. Even then Yang actually *has* shown issues with the truth before. Said being her discovering Raven and proceeding to fly off the handle without thinking just like V5 by packing up her sister in a wagon and nearly dying. Yang hasn't changed. The entire first bit of V5 demonstrates that. Which is even sadder because the writers intended it to show the opposite and they botched it *that badly* > Weiss constantly got into arguments with others and acted defensively when it came to her family's company (see: her huffing at Blake's comment about their labor practices in Volume 1) whereas now she's not confrontational and actually accepts the actions of her family's business. Weiss is never defensive of her family's company in V1. She merely leverages it to humliliate Ruby. The fully canon trailer manga (confirmed as such by Kerry in there 2016 NYCC Panel) has Weiss breaking her fathers hold by age 8. And V2 confirms this is the reason she goes to Beacon. Weiss is exactly the same as she was post V1E12. She just lost a title. > And Ruby...If I go on another rant about how difficult it is to be in Ruby's position Oh joy you're one of those masochists who are licking the writers feet for making you wait a decade for breadcrumbs. > Not even going into Jaune, Ren and Nora who you've implied are main characters. Or that we revisit the more emotional and rash side of Ren even though he's heavily characterized as the calm and collected type, how he feels about the situation and his relationship with Nora. And part of Whitely's resolve was his antagonism with Weiss, meaning she was also involved. None of this required them to just sit around and do nothing for the time preceeding this. Which they even give Kdin a speech about and they still do nothing. The hound reveal did not require them to stay there. Whitley development is development for Whitley. Because he actually had ground to cover. Weiss has been done since V1. Moreover this doesn't change that none of this is used to develop Blake, Ruby or Blake. Blake just kisses Rubys ass and Weiss does nothing. > Nowhere in this conversation did you say that this was just a recent problem. You actually say the opposite with Weiss. And implied it with 'V8 alone', implying it wasn't done in previous, less easy to do Volumes. I thought RWBY was always about Fairy tales, at least in character concepts and designs. Can we just get to the Happily Ever after part? Feels like I'm been on this show for decades now and I ain't getting any younger.
I hope rooster teeth bring back Nomad of nowhere and camp camp. They mostly have been focusing on red vs blue, RWBY and other things or maybe I'm just over exaggerating, but what do you guys think?
Oh, great they’re gonna deal with Cinder first and then Salem soon and I wonder Raven Branwen will react to Yang and the bandit queen didn’t know that she’s alive?
Think this team has significantly overestimated their staying power as a viewer-relevant franchise. The hiatus may have paid off if the first episode was amazing, but it wasn't. It calls into question the decisions by the team. And if you didn't make those decisions for a better product, and you certainly didn't make them for the betterment of your employees, why did you do it? First episode was boring and I felt zero weight from the enormous ass-kicking RWBY just received. But they all just stand up. Not heroically brushing it off because there's work to do; no. They just woke up Monday morning, got in the car, and went to work like nothing happened.
You guys did great. And RWBY is awesome. And volume 9 ... may not necessarily be my favorite volume. But I won't ask about volume 9. Just please tell me why RT is shutting down? And what will become of RWBY now?
I wasn’t expecting this season to be so.. detached from the main plot of the show, and tho I am a little disappointed I do understand why. It’s been 8 volumes of pure world chaos, a break to focus on the main characters without that chaos would be great (depending on how it was done the chaos of an Alice in Wonderland based world would be great to enhance the character writing rather than getting the way like the chaos of the main plot could)
I think it never was. If anything , Ever After is a weird mix of Fairytale and the more old-school Fae Realm. "Casting away your name" comes from the idea of magical beings and everyone else having a "True Name" , so casting and replacing it , would be akin to the Fae or Fairy Changelling , which is when a Human trades themselves with a Fae.
Been out of love with Rwby since volume 7 I think. Then even more when my Boy Ironwood went off the deep end. This volume makes me want to rewatch the volumes I missed and then this one
So basically they're doing their version of Quadratum from Kingdom Hearts, it's the same idea honestly like they take a step back from the light and darkness narrative and explore the real world
1:25 "... and it would be a really great place to reset and get away from the main narrative ... make it feel a little more like Volume 1" I hate all of this. The main narrative was rocking, we left V8 with so much going on, so much drama, and investment in all the characters and now..... what? Two years of waiting, and entire season of fluffy filler? Is that what they are saying? I can't be V1 again. All of team BWBY have gone through too much development in character for it to be V1 again. V3 was a big shift in tone, going much darker than the previous 2 volumes, and V4 remains one of my favorite volumes, with the characters dealing with the fallout of V3. Maybe they are trying to go for something like that - but V4 still was building up the main plot, still weaving different subplots together. This is literally the team off on another world with no connection to anything else. I really, really hope that we do get some of what's going on on Remnant soon, but the opening showed none of the characters there, just weird wonderland stuff. We could be in for an entire volume of filler, after two years off. I loved this show. I am tired of defending it to other people. There is great drama and humor in the cast and plot, and it sounds like that's all being abandoned for a half-assed idea one of the writers had 10 years ago, and never got to do, and so pushed it now.
I’m still a fan of Rwby as an IP such as IceQueendon, I am more a Red vs Blue fan and the volumes after 2 was not as appealing to me as the others. I can see that they are putting in much effort into this song. I understand the hardships. I hope to see them keep growing and getting better. However, I am only waiting for Red vs Blue at this point.
Speaking of red vs. Blue, I wish rooster teeth could do rwby recapping done by the reds and blues with Simmons as the main host and Co hosting with him would alternate each episode between Grif and Tucker.
Red vs Blue had its glory days. Many people had hoped it would end before they ruined it. They tried to revive it with Zero but honestly I think they should add more writers that grew up with the characters
Hasn’t Rwby always been Fairy Tale ish? Like the 4 main characters of the titular team are based on Western fairytales like Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks Team Jaune is based on hero’s from Mythology/History Ace ops is literally fables And one of the big reveals is that the In-universe fairy tales are REAL events
This is just my opinion, but I just feel like the direction characters are going is just.. weird. They don't seem like the lovable characters they used to be (I know character development plays a part, but they just don't seem lovable to me anymore) But I'm excited that RWBY is back and look forward to see where it's going with the story at least. Ps. Please bring back team CVFY (especially Velvet) i miss them and the books say they're in Vacuo

@@mcplegger5001 basically distribute it. So it no longer appears on their site and not for first members either. It sucks but logistically it makes sense. Crunchy licenses it and pays for it.
