She acknowledged that time that she was Filipino and she was excited doing the voice of that character. That Netflix anime was just released during the pandemic, 2021, just 3yrs ago.🙄 Don’t know why she’s now downgrading her being a Filipino.🙄

Well there ALOT of Filipino-American actors that heveamently deny their Filipino heritage like Lou Diamond Philips and Tia Carrera. It was until they weren't famous that they went on admit it. But u gotta hand it to Rob Schneider because NOBODY asked him for his Filipino heritage and just casually announced it hehe.

For any Filipinos/Filipinas looking for positive representation in the entertainment industry, just don't look towards those like Shay Mitchell. Look towards those who are proud to be.

Some people be living their whole lives in denial or are just lacking the education. And the amount of Filipinos that really believe they have even a drop of Spanish blood in them, just cause they have Spanish names is staggering. Most Filipinos don't have Spanish, or any European, blood. Only a very very small portion of the population have Euro ancestry. The Spanish surnames came from the Spaniards forcing Filipinos to adapt Spanish surnames after we were forced to convert to and baptized into Catholicism. It was also for census so they can easily tax the population since they will in turn have written record of every citizen under their empire and easier to control and tax. Either they didn't learn from history classes or have completely forgotten, that the Spaniards kept a distance from the natives and for the most part, only inter-married with fellow Spaniards, and very few native elites, which were usually the native pre-colonial nobility and royalty. They even stayed behind fortified walls in Spanish-only settlements, like walled city of Intramuros in Manila, to keep away from the natives. That's why if you look at the map of Manila, right outside the walled-city of Intramuros is Binondo, on the other side of the river, cause they also kept away from other races like the Chinese traders and settlers that resided in Binondo, which is also the oldest Chinatown in the world. The most common mixture in the Philippines are Filipinos mixed with Chinese/having Chinese heritage(including myself) as there was more intermingling between the natives and Chinese traders and settlers. The Euro mixed Filipinos today are mostly more of a recent thing like children of Filipinos who immigrated to western countries like the US, Australia, UK, Canada, etc, in the last 2-3 generations, this century.

I am Mexican but I sure as hell know that I am not Spanish lol I speak Spanish but that’s it! I am proud of my Mexican heritage! It’s insane that I used to be ashamed of it back when I was a kid! I hope my Asian brothers and sisters take pride of their heritage because even in the US, they will never see us as American even if we are born here! That’s why I don’t bother or care about their validation! Glad that the younger generations of Asian Americans are taking pride in their heritage because I am seeing it!

Little known fact. Around 1850 Spain forced Filipinos to drop their native names and change it to Spanish names. Similar to when new slaves arriving in America were being given new names for easier pronounciation. For example if your slave owner was John your new slave last name became John's son or Johnson.

Puhlease. I’m a Korean Canadian female from Mississauga, Ontario. My Korean parents would have never identified with their Japanese colonizers. Btw, Enrique Iglesias is on the record half Spanish and half Filipino. His mom is a former beauty queen/model. Shay has unresolved racial identity issues and is white washing herself for more perceived marketability. Her mom looks very Filipina. Shay should embrace both sides of her cultural identity. I'm Fil-Am. Both of my parents are from the Philippines. I did a commercial DNA test that showed I am 60% Filipino, 30% Chinese, and 1% Iberian/Spanish. Am I using that as an excuse to bandwagon Spain at Euro 2024? Yes. But do I consider myself "Spanish"? Nah. Not even close.

The problem is that she HAS repped her Filipino side before, which is why it feels like she has turned on her Filipino side. Thats the only reason I even knew she was one of us. If she had NEVER claimed it before, or had kept it secret, THEN there wouldnt have been a feeling of betrayal and no one would care.

It is because she hates herself and very insecure. Being a Filipino is a blessing to the world. The kindness, the hard working attitude and generous heart are not found so easily in the world until you meet a filipino. People like to deny part of their roots until they see that neglected side making them money. All of a sudden they start representing their culture. They start speaking the language, eating the food, wearing the clothes, ect.

I am Chinese living in Switzerland raising two kids, I brought them to China for every summer vocation, and bring them to Kungfu training and Dragon boating. They can't hide how pride and cool they are being Chinese among the Swiss/German children in school.

For people who don't know, she lived and went to secondary school in West Vancouver, Canada, a posh part of greater Vancouver. Back in the days, Filipinos in West Vancouver didn't get respect and were looked down upon as the Filipino population in this part of greater Vancouver is low. I get why she didn't embrace her heritage as she wanted to fit in better. In West Vancouver being known as a rich Spaniard is better than being known as a "poor Filipino". I’m 35 French,German,Irish and Thai when I was a kid being Asian definitely wasn’t cool lol. I used to lean a lot more into my white side because getting made fun of for all the Asian stereotypes was very real lol!!

Just because Spain colonized Philippines don't assume that all Filipinos are partly spanish descent. Shay Mithell's Mother is literally Filipino and looks so Full Filipino. The same as Vanessa Hudgens saying her mom's dad is spanish doesn't mean she's HALF SPANISH, she literally looks more filipino and her mom literally is a short woman, brown skin and flat nose. Hailee Steinfeild and Nicole Scherzinger, Bruno Mars and other Filipino Descent Artists has always been proud to be Filipinos Nicole might not know how to speak Tagalog Fluent but she has been repping her Filipino heritage even before the Pinoy-baiting was a thing. If she was in her early 20's now, she'd probably be leaning into the Asian side. It's lame but that's what it is. Did 2 DNA tests. Thought there was some Spanish blood. 0% Spanish. 100% Filipino. I think the next largest ethnicity I got was like 0.02% Chinese. Does that mean that my Filipino bloodline goes back thousands of years on the island and not a single Spaniard commingled with any of my ancestors? Maybe I'm Filipino royalty? I’m Filipino. My great grandfather is from Spain. His family migrated over during colonization. I am technically 1/8 Spanish. I have family that we still keep in touch with in Madrid & Barcelona. From my knowledge, Spanish ppl from Spain party & drink a lot. (Ibiza, etc.) & so are ppl from Ireland. I really don’t think that she was DENYing her Filipino culture… she was relating her Spanish & Irish side for getting “spicy” or aggressive when she drinks. I understand why ppl are upset, but I just feel like i understand it on a different level because i have identified as 1/8 Spanish because we are still in touch with our Spanish family & because my great grandfather is a famous composer in the Philippines so i identify with his roots because my family is so proud to be his descendants. I have family members that believe we have Spanish ancestry, but DNA tests say otherwise. As someone w/ a sociology background that dislikes colonialism & genocide, I never understood the appeal of staying in denial. In reality, I’m a mix of Austronesian, East & Central Asian and 1/4 Polynesian. “Asian Pacific Islander” is actually pretty accurate for me.

Im chinese Panamanian, and I can see this in my country. Most people even if they obviously have black and indigenous features will reject their blackness or indigenousness in favor of their european side, even if they dont look nothing alike. You can also see it in the kids of American solders who married Panamanian women reject their Panamanian side in favor of their american side. In fact they seem to be the most pro american and panamanian hating than if there parents were both americans. It has to do with hypergammy and self hate. Basically the kids were raised to think that their mother side was inferior and their dad side is superior. Thats why is common for half chinese people to make fun of chinese people and look us down.

Hello Fung Bros. my great great Grand Father is from Madrid Spain. He moved to the Philippines in the 1800's and married a Mestiza (half filipino/spanish). I am proud of being a Filipina and but embrace my side of my father who is Metizo and speaks fluent spanish, tagalog and english on top of that speaks different dialects. So yes there are a-lot of half filipino and half Spanish descendants. These so called conquistador who ruled the Philippines have blended with the Indios ( native filipinos) and so therefore, there are what we call Mestizos and Mestizas. Spain allows filipinos to apply for Spanish citizenship due to " Jus Sanguines". I am proud to embrace my Filipino side and Spanish side of my family. We are all descendants of countries who are conquerors. Shay Mitchell may have descendants from Spain and may have blended with Filipinos and therefore, as the generation goes the Spanish gene is completely gone once they start marrying Filipinos without Spanish Heritage. Her mom obviously has Filipina looks. I guess she needs to do more research before she denies her Filipino side. I am a proud Filipina.

Actually, Saweetie is 31, while H.E.R. is 27, also here my two cents: I'm think it's probably more like a generational thing, because, you have to keep it mind that some people who are probably ashamed to be proud who they are regardless they hapa or mixed-race. Oh yeah, I did forget most Filipinos have Basque even if just a bit. BUT, Basque is different than imperial Spanish though the lines have blurred just a bit when Basque only recently converted to Catholicism a few centuries ago. But they resisted for quite some time and their language is a language isolate, and they still practice animism, etc.

Great topic...myself I'm 1/4 philipino and 3/4 han Chinese canto ....my grandmother claims Spanish decent but what I found out through RU-vid was that during the Spanish colonisation of philipines l, a lot of south and central Americans some bred with Spanish were sent over to the philipines as slaves and the same the other way around. Philipines also have a Austronesian aka Malay heritage originally and mix of Chinese and Japanese from the north...so basically the perfect blend of brown people which the nwo wants everybody to be ...definitely a huge identity crisis there...philipinos who claim Spanish heritage may have mistaken that their grand or great grand parents were of mixed south American and Spanish bred/cast

I’m fil-am and my in laws are Filipino (FIL) and Samoan(MIL). The self hatred is real. They preferred my husband married a white girl so they could have half white grandkids because that somehow means they’re more classy, even though they have the WORST manners and act very low class. If she is from Canada there is no way she isn't exposed to other Filipinos. Huge Filipino population, and way longer than 20 years. Largest non caucasian group in Winnipeg for example and represented in many other Canadian cities. She is from Toronto ontario. In 2016 census there were 337,760 Filipinos in Ontario. A lot more now. The largest subgroup of Filipinos is in the US, the 2nd in Canada. But if you gonorer capita, a higher percentage in Canada.

It's the colonizer mindset coming throughhhh lol. As immigrants or children or immigrants, I wouldn't be surprised if we all had the same lived experience growing up being ashamed of not being white and wanting to fit in - I call it my banana phase. But, it's sad to see that some people clearly haven't grown out of it in their big age. As someone who lived in the PH but spent more than half of their life in the US, it's disheartening to see how Filipinos are more appreciated abroad than in their own home country. Every time I go back home, I'm always told to "stay out of the sun" or "use gluthathione" because the colorist and racist mindset is still so rampant, especially now with the popularity of KPop and the desire to look more "Eastern" (Japanese, South Korean, etc.) Which leads to Filipinos only praising half--white/European celebrities like: Vanessa Ann Hudgens, Nicole Scherzinger, Olivia Rodrigo, Shay Mitchell who don't ever claim their Asian side unless it benefits them. But "darker-skinned" half-Filipinos like: Saweetie, Apl de Ap, H.E.R, Bretman Rock are constantly being overlooked even though they rep the flag and their people so hard + loud every chance they get. Yo... according to Wikipedia, she was born in Mississauga, ON, which is pretty much a suburb of Toronto, perhaps the most culturally diverse area in the world. Looks like she bounced to Vancouver for a bit (also high Asian population) and modelled in Asia for a bit before heading back to Toronto. I'm a decade older than her and I grew up with every ethnicity under the sun in Toronto. Multiculturalism was/is a tenet Canadian identity - which was not just political policy, but even pushed in beer commercials in the 90s and 2000s. So if anything, it's not gonna be the Canadian experience that makes her deny her Filipino heritage. If anything, she's probably kowtowing to American media practices, where Asians are seen as less than, if even seen at all. US culture still mainly pushes Black and White and sometimes Brown (Latin not Indian) narratives.

This is so weird for her to do. I’m a Filipino with Spanish heritage - my maternal great grandmother was a Spanish Filipina who spoke Spanish and Visayan and had curly light brown hair. My Spanish heritage was confirmed through a genetics test. Also found out I have Basque heritage on my dad’s side. But I can’t imagine claiming just being Spanish and/or Basque and not acknowledging being Filipino at all. I actually just say I’m Filipino and if someone asks about my heritage, that’s when I’ll mention the Spanish and Basque ancestry. I feel like Enrique Iglesias has more right to just claim being Spanish due to his and his mom’s upbringing, but even he acknowledges his Filipino side.

I think she livec her whole life telling that lie up to the point she joined the industry under those false pretenses. She probably made so many hispanic friends that telling the truth became just too difficult. It would mean to everyone that she knew that her whole life was a lie; which it most likely is. Given for a while Asian or half Asian women did not make it far in the industry. Yet Spanish women were prospering greatly. Thus she adapted that persona/identity.

I used to say I was half Japanese (vs Okinawan) if someone asked that I knew would have no clue what Okinawan even was. My grandmother also told me growing up not to distinguish. This was due to her experience growing up and being discriminated against by Japanese and treated as “other”. It was just simpler. As I got older and learned more about the history of Okinawa and moved to Honolulu from Maui (strong Okinawan community that embraces the culture), I stopped doing that and always embrace my Okinawan heritage. In regards to Shay that just seems odd to me that she would not be aware that this may cause a controversy. I think it’s obvious that watchers who identify with your heritage would be upset if you omit it. I say omit because she could feel there is Spanish heritage also on her Filipino side. I just think it’s weird she would invite that discontent regardless of any internalized stuff that is going on. Regarding the statement that Bruno Mars doesn’t know his culture. He grew up in Hawaii as a first gen born in the US. There is no way that a Filipino would grow up in Hawaii with a Filipino mother and have no connection to his culture. The culture is very present and strong here. Along the same lines this brings us close to a line I don’t think should be crossed - can mixed race claim their heritage if they don’t know much about their culture. This really bothers me. My heritage is what it is regardless of what I look like. Society can’t have it both ways - if we want folks to claim their heritage we can’t then make comments that questions how much of their culture they grew up. Would we say that about a non mixed 100% Asian person? As a mixed person this was always so hurtful. I don’t have to be a a cultural expert to claim my Asian background just because I have a few physical features that make my physical appearance more ambiguous.

Comprehension is the key. She didn't deny her Filipino roots, the video fragment from her show, that started all the fuss, is being taken way out of context, she only mentioned her mom's Spanish roots and dad's Irish ones, because it was RELEVANT to the convo they were having (she was just making a harmless joke about her being able to handle drinking a lot and spiciness thanks to her Irish and Spanish roots). There was just no point in mentioning her other roots, since it was not relevant to their conversation. Moreover she has talked about her Filipino roots many times in many old and even new interviews which were recorded AFTER the filming of her show from which this fragment was taken, so she definitely doesn't hide or deny her Filipino roots.
