Women in Ghana have been turning shea nuts into butter for centuries. People across Africa have used it for skin and hair care, food, and medicine for at least 700 years. But for the past four decades, men have been cutting down the very tree that provides livelihood to many families. We traveled to Ghana to find out how despite the challenges, this group of women artisans is Still Standing.

This is so sad to me. The demand for shea butter has increased by 600%. These women should be living in luxury. Per usual, every country takes the resources from Africa but somehow manage to leave the inhabitants out of the equation. It's sickening but from now on I'll definitely make the effort to buy from small businesses vs commercially

"every country takes the resources from Africa" I think this statement is wrong, Africa is selling these raw materials because most producers can't process it themselves. If these countries has a more decent manufacturing industry, they don't have to sell everything raw but instead a processed product. Even partially processed product should suffice. Example, instead of selling ores they will sell steel. Even if they cant build ships, steel alone has more than doubles the value of the raw material and also helps local employment.

While I'm not sure that we can purchase from them directly, this story and issue is not just specific to them, is representative of all small shea butter producers in Africa who have been doing this for centuries. I think what we can do to support them is know who and where we are getting our shea butter from. I'm lucky enough to buy mine from African vendors in Chicago who fly home a couple times a year and they bring things directly back . One in a green soap that I use but the other is Shea butter, it's so pure I can put it in my food. It's WAY better than commercial grade too an less expensive. But when you worked so hard, you need rest, so you buy a machine to do the hard work. It's a vicious cycle when demand and conflicting needs put a strain on vulnerable populations. Africa should be benefiting from it's own wealth. This is how you know colonialism never ended. Also, the excess of capitalism is well known now. Demand for this wouldn't destroy people and the environment if we could get these corporations and capitalist-corporate-minded individuals to stop forcing lifetimes of overtime labor that scarcely supports the forced laborer and only benefits a microscopic few who insist on commandeering the whole planet for their personal use. Every culture disabled by colonialism knew how to live within their local resources and trade for the rest. Then came greedy, ignorant, godless marauding people from over there and the planet earth has suffered indescribably since. It's extra needless.

@Bystander232 im not sure how well you perceive "sophisticated technology" in this context. coming from a "third world" (like the west puts it) country myself who had worked closely with traditional sector workforce i just pointed out something i observed from field, adding in technology doesn't mean transforming their workplace into some ultra modern factory overnight. can't really blame you tho!! i think its simply the issue of global west's understanding about modernization vs what we (developing and under developed countries) actually mean when we say technology and modernization.

Nah, this is ridiculous. they deserve to have abundance in wealth. My mom has been using shea butter on me since I was 4. We always got them from the african shops in Atlanta but covid hit these places hard and it hasn’t been the same since. There are so many brands and companies taking advantage of the market. Before all the hype, it was 2010 and good shea butter was available. My eczema was healed, my skin was healthy, and the white kids at school were bullying me for using this instead of “normal” lotion. Now look where we are…how ironic💆🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ Anyways…………..I will pay anything to get this DIRECTLY from them- even if it takes forever to ship. I don’t care if the shipping is ridiculous. Those working and producing this straight from the motherland deserve to be living well anyways. Ridiculous…Keep y’alls mouths shut next time…Gatekeep and build from there. There must be an educational awareness of the valuability of such trees, aforestation and the dangers of deforestation. A total prohibition of tree felling must be enforced by law. The senseless greed in Ghana must stop!!!

Cutting down the trees should be made illigal. They should be protected as a vital resource. Charcoal is not as valuable. Grow your own trees to burn that don't have a more important and repeatedly applicable value.
