Part 1 of a series called "Roadmap". Series explores the steps involved in choosing, buying, setting up and using your mini PC. This episode explores whether you should buy a mini PC and which one (Hint: an HP EliteDesk)
One pretty major thing I didn't see mentioned at all is that if you want OFFICIAL windows support after Oct 2025 you will need a MINIMUM of 8th gen processor aka a G4 or newer. If you own a G1, G2 or G3 after that you would have to bypass windows requirements and run unofficially. You could of course also just run linux but for the average user those 2 choices might be show stoppers when making purchase choices.
I have one in a totally "other" category that I am about to get rid of because I am not using it. What is it? A Dell 7070 Ultra, which is a PC that is designed to fit inside a special monitor stand made by Dell, it also can be mounted on the back of any VESA monitor with a bracket. The processor is a 15W Mobile platform, or at least that is what I think the category of the CPU is. The one I have is an i7 8th Gen. I bought it because of the same reason I buy HP EliteDesk mini's... they are different and I like different. I have so many PC's doing different things in my house I ran out of tasks and now I have PCs in drawers doing nothing.
@downtech The CPU is soldered to the board but, stanard ddr4 laptop ram, nvme drive (the short one) Also the back has a place to plug in a 2.5 SATA ssd. and they sell a bump out cover to hold the ssd in place that costs 50 bucks. I found a workaround I just fished the ssd cable between the fan and motherboard to the "wrong side" Some 2.5" SSD boards are very small and surrounded by a plastic or metal case. I had one of the small SSD boards after I took the 2.5" case off I just plugged it in and sat it on top of one of the RAM slots which are covered with some insulating plastic so the ssd won't short out there, and that worked great. There is also a removable wifi card in there.
@@handmedowntech Used from ebay. I would never pay full retail for a new computer of any kind and when it is something I am unfamiliar with, I really want to try to get a deal. This one had damage to the paint on the plastic part and a noisy fan. I paid for a new fan and painted it with truck bed liner paint. The bed liner paint I have used on other PC cases and it is tough and looks good on PC's that were black to begin with. BTW the paint I used was the spray can version of "Iron Armor Bed Coating" from Harbor Freight, I used that because I had a trashed ASUS desktop with scratches all over it and I tried that paint on it and it was close to the original look on the ASUS, so I knew how it would look before I started using it on other PC cases. On most cases it isn't going to look close to original but in my opinion it looks better than the original paint on most.
i have an elitedesk 800 g1 sff. it came with 16 ram. is 16 ram the most it can use ? and ddr3 is the highiest it can use? where can i learn more about the version i have? Sorry for asking a lot in my first comment here
Welcome to the channel. The G1 is a fun and interesting unit. Mine is faithfully serving as a backup NAS. 16gb is the max and it does use DDR3 due to the chip set and the memory slots. Do a search for EliteDesk 800 G1 dm specs to get more from HP. Just realized you had a SFF. Same should hold true for it.
Unfortunately I don't have a G6 myself so I'd be giving advice from Google searches. I'll check the service manual too. You might want to put in a claim with eBay if the seller is not responding.
Not looking good - most of the posts out there say that the motherboard has to be swapped out. You can check here to see if it is still covered by a warranty support.hp.com/us-en/check-warranty but you'll have to convince HP that they need to replace it. I think the best course of action is to put in a return claim with eBay.
@@handmedowntech THX for taking care HP says althou in warranty they want approx € 750 for replacing Motherboard on site, they will not ship a new motherboard! Waiting for eBuy response
That's crazy. You could buy several of them for that price. So sorry that you were sent a locked one. My first G2 was locked but thankfully those old units have instructions for unlocking. Even the G5 has a way to do it. Let us know how it turns out.
