The Anglo-Catholic church is known for being about as Catholic as you can get without crossing the Tiber. But that raises a question: why not just go all they way? If a Protestant is interested in church history and attracted to the Anglican church, especially the Anglo-Catholic church, would they not be better off simply becoming Catholic? Fr. One reason is that Anglo Catholicism retains the faith delivered to the saints, church tradition and teaching, but rejects blatant falsehoods such as papal supremacy and infallibility.

About 2 years ago I met an Anglican Father. You ought to ask other Anglican leaders this question. He gave some ok answers but left a lot off the table. Learning what Anglicans believe has been extremely helpful

@@GospelSimplicity The best option would be what YOU are doing, actually.. except at a leadership level. 😉 ie *inter-Christian faith dialogue* .. if not a good ol' day Concile, like in the 1st century. So Protestants would bring their critical mind to the table, Catholic/Anglican stability & prayers (Jesuits', Rosary), and Cooptic/Orthodoxy mysticism and early tradition. Also baptism in any denomination should become valid in all the others (no need for double-baptism anymore) and Anglican priest lineage should be re-validated by the Pope.

I am part of the Orthodox Church, but because of reading the writings of C.S. Lewis, I purchased the Book of Common Prayer and found the prayers in this book to be spiritually profitable!!

I think he kinda did. He said that he's quite convinced that Anglicanism has always been a valid Apostolic church, and if he were Catholic he'd have to admit that The Anglican Church was founded in schism (I could be misunderstanding him, though).

I think he was trying to be diplomatic and not go down the "our church is better than yours" route. These times are already incredibly divisive, even among Christians, and I think that is something Satan is fomenting, and joyful about. All of us who are orthodox Christians need to support each other. Satan wins if he manages to set us against each other. We -- orthodox Christians -- are going to lose our religious freedom if don't overlook our smaller disagreements and address the largest one that threatens all Christian denominations elsewhere -- human sexuality and how it's defined by Scripture. I disagree. I think Fr. Wesley did answer the question well. He highlighted the strengths and spiritual fulfilment of Anglicanism beautifully. He gave examples of why Anglicanism serves his own life well if you look behind what he's saying. To me, his response was that Anglicanism is more inclusive. Having been raised a Roman Catholic and becoming an Anglican as an adult, I agree. I am glad I made the move.

It is too all-inclusive and that goes back to the earliest years. There were four big groups, and they are still there: These are :1. Some wanted what they would see as a sort of purified Catholicism - the vernacular, no indulgences, marrieds clergy etc; 2. Evangelical protestants; 3. A broad official "civil service" religion which does not seek to define doctrine closely - especially in England, and 4. Modern church which is unmoored from the traditional faith and dogma - they may not believe in the virgin birth, the divinity of Christ. But all lthese incompatible beliefs are tolerated as if these things were not really imortant!

I grew up going to a fundamentalist megachurch, and I find myself drawn to Anglicanism due to its open mindedness and its middle ground between Protestantism and Catholicism.

I'm Episcopalian and happy about that . I think it all comes down to what you believe in total. I fully embrace the tenets of the church I'm in. Unless I truly believed in all the teachings of a faith , I see it as a false journey .

The lens/worldview that is known in Old Testament language as the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil prompts these sorts of questions. Everything, including God (!?!?), is seen through the fundamental dualism, ‘am I in or am I out? The other lens/worldview, the Tree of Life (who btw made an appearance in the flesh), shows us that all creation is already included in the Father’s Life.

I am not going to lie. I would never join the Anglican Church unless I was in Africa. To me it seems that it has become far too secular and is suffering the same issue that most main line denominations. It wants to be like the world.

I was Anglo Catholic. On the road to the priesthood, I am now going to be confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church. Trust me when I say, there is no consistent unity, it will always divide. It may be good today, but in 50 years, it will split. There is no ultimate authority, one will allow divorce the other no. One with allow female bishops and the other no. On and on. Run to the church that Christ established through the apostle Peter.

The Roman church doesn’t allow same sex marriage through their Catholic Doctrine no matter what corrupt bishops may say. Unlike in Anglicanism, all you need is enough bishops to agree, then they will accept it. It has happened in numerous Protestant denominations. The promise in seen in Matt 16, it is through Peter the church won’t have the gates of hell prevail against it. Anglicanism began through separation, and was over taken by puritans, their 39 articles are purposely broad to fit as many contradictory view as it can, and to this day cannot find unity. Schism within schism. Anglicanism has no meaning, evangelical? Liberal? Catholic liberal? Catholic conservative? Pentecostal?

Catholicism is laden with ideology - and that is a problem. Anglicanism emphasizes, in my experience, prefers a value-laden inductive reasoning, which is what Jesus’ provers. When you are faced with a decision what does you ideology try to compel you to do vs what does values compel you to do? That’s a lesson from the Good Samaritan parable. If someone is gay should they be shunned or should you love them the way God loves them? What does that mean?

It doesn’t. Christ rose on Sunday so his resurrection to have the Lords Day supersedes the Sabbath. The Sabbath day of rest is shadow of the Resurrection so on the Lords Day we have our Sabbath rest Day. Hope that makes sense

I am Anglican because the Roman Catholic Church has erroneous doctrines and a culture that is too clerical and nott concerned enough with laity. Also, I prefer the freedom of belief I have as an Anglican.

I've seen a lot of Anglicans converting to Orthodoxy over the last few years. It would be interesting if you interviewed Catholics, Orthodox, and Anglicans that converted from one of the other apostolic traditions and ask them to explain why.

@Peace Ngrease. The COE and Episcopalian community have no valid apostolic succession. The Anglicans always claim they have but in reality do not. The lines of apostolic succession was broken when Henry XVIII broke away from Rome. Look at it, why do so many Anglican bishops convert to Catholicism and why do they get reordain? Bishop Michael Nazri-Ali, one of the 2 candidates for the top job, Archbishop of Canterbury, one of the co founders of ACNA, touted to be the beacon of light of traditional Anglicanism, gave up because of the mess in the Anglican world and converted to Catholicism. Bishop Gavin Ashenden, the Queen's chaplain became a Catholic too 4 to 5 years ago, as with many Anglican bishops and clergy.

@adolphCat maybe instigated was a poor choice of word to describe the task Jesus placed with His apostles. However, one meaning of instigated is "to stir up;" proclaiming the Good News of salvation certainly stirred up persecution but more importantly a stirring up of BELIEF in the Son of God Jesus the Messiah. Henry, in his pride & greed, plundered the monasteries, the only refuge of the sick & poor. Elizabeth may have tidied the mess but kept most of Catholic doctrine & ritual. The Pope denied Henry divorce from Catherine of Arragon. This was unacceptable to Henry, who wanted what he wanted at great cost to his nation. The duty of kingship was lost on Henry.

Growing up attending RC parochial schools (family not RC, it was just a better education), Anglicans were sometimes referred to facetiously, possibly pejoratively at times, as Catholic Lite. As an Orthodox Christian now, I find such spats amusing.

I'm surprised to read that - I'm nearly 66 years old, raised as a Catholic, fell by the wayside in my late teens, though eventually returned fully to my Church within the last 7-8 years. Never in my whole life have I ever heard a Catholic ( certainly not in my country) mention/discuss/criticize Anglicans in any shape or form.

Perhaps these may help answer the question for some: - Anglicans threw out the accretions that crept into Rome, like praying to saints and icon veneration - like the universal church before the Great Schism, there is no one bishop who gets to rule the others - no papal infallibility - a MUCH better understanding of justification than Rome - more theological breathing room while maintaining the boundaries of orthodox Christianity (with a few exceptional provinces that have departed from orthodoxy)

@@erikriza7165 No. The Anglican Church is founded on the Book of Common Prayer, the 39 Articles and the Books of Homilies - it is Catholic AND Reformed. It emerged from a peace settlement between Protestants and Catholics brokered by Elizabeth I, after decades of turmoil, division and religious debate. At its best, it is a very reverential and sobering form of Christian worship and church life, replete with liturgical beauty. What is the point of such a comment? The only thing you achieve is winding people up and fomenting hatred between Catholics and Anglicans. You don't think we could talk nastily about the Church of Rome or the Bishop of Rome? Is that what you want? Do you want to turn gentle, reasonable Anglicans into vexed and frothing at the mouth anti-Catholics? Many Anglicans hold respect for our Catholic brothers and we agree on most points. Read the 39 Articles and see how many times you disagree.

IMO, no person should feel the slightest pressure to attach themself to any particular denomination or sect of Christianity. You're either a person trying to understand and do God's will, or you're not. No label- Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Methodist, Nazarene, even Christian- means anything at all. These labels, along with their corresponding complicated theologies, are ALL imperfect human constructions, used to convince people that they now in possession of something the "others" don't have. If a particular sect resonates with you, then fine, but don't delude yourself into thinking that attaching a label to yourself holds any spiritual significance.

Only a small percentage of Anglicans are embracing that. At least 85% of the Anglican Church worldwide rejects the blessing of same-sex relationships.

Not all Anglicans are Anglo-Catholic. In-fact, most are not. This is just that particular view. For an Evangelical Anglican, a Reformed Anglican, a Laudian/old highchurch, etc. there are going to be a lot more reasons not to be Roman than in this case.

But that's a no answer. I'd really like to know how can one consider serious the church with Charles as a head. Or other words - in every history book I read the origin of the Anglicanism was a king who couldn't get a divorce. That doesn't sound like a valid reason for a someone 500 years later to be a part of it. So the question is: why should I choose to go to Anglican church and not Catholic? Why is Anglicanism right and Catholicism wrong? Every other protestant or orthodox group can give theological reasons why they think Catholics are wrong or even dangerous. But I can never find it among Anglicans.

If Jesus Christ Divinely Established his Catholic Church on Peter who was His first Pope. If that was Jesus Christ wish and His design for His holy Church, that it be built on Peter! Then it end’s right there. There should be no schisms or other heretical churches, outside the One! and Only! True! Church! Jesus Christ only founded One! Church! Not One! divide church. Some said, Elisha, some said Jeremiah, some said He was a great prophet. Then Jesus turned to Peter and asked? Simon son of Jonah, who do you say that am? And Peter replied! You are the Messiah the Christ, the son of the living God. And Jesus replied! Because Jesus Christ said it was! Because Peter was singled out by “God the Father” Peter becomes the first Pope in Jesus Christ, Holy, Catholic, church. He then tells Peter whatever He binds on earth will also be bound in heaven. And whatever Peter looses on earth will also be loosed in heaven The “keys” represent the power and the authority given to Peter over all the other apostles, by Jesus Christ himself. Now google! Who founded the “Catholic Church” it will tell you Jesus Christ. The google! Who was the first Pope. And it will tell you Peter. And then go to the internet and down load the unbroken succession of Popes from Peter all the way down to Pope Francis. Every one of them is listed. Because it’s true and because it was a historically documented event. Do your homework, study the early church fathers and you’ll discover the fullness of The Truth lies in the One! True! Holy Catholic, Apostolic Church! Also look up St. Ignatius letters to the seven churches, which he wrote in 107 ad, while on the way to be fed to the lions at the colosseum. Ignatius wrote, where you find the “Bishop of Rome” there you will find the Holy. Catholic, Apostolic, Church. Seek and you shall find! God Bless. Mathew 16:18

Jesus did not call Peter the “rock” on which he would build his church. “You are the messiah” Jesus replies “you are petros (pebble) and on THIS (not YOU, as in Peter, but THIS, as in what Peter just said) Petra (rock, solid foundation) I will build my church.” This verse does not prove the papacy. It proves that Christs church is build on faith in Jesus as the messiah and son of God. Also check out Luke 17:20-21. “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable. No one will say to you see here or there for the kingdom of God is in your midst.” This further supports that the church is not some geographical location or some organizational entity such as Rome, but it is the faith that we believe. That faith being in Jesus Christ God incarnate.

Listen to some of their testimonies with Marcus Grodi, on “The Journey Home” These are great Protestant converts who never gave up until they discover the fullness of The Truth. about Jesus Christ and his One True! My biggest problem with Anglo Catholics, as a high church Anglican, is that it seems like a "hey I'm apostolic too!" option. Rome doesn't consider us apostolic. The East requires, at the moment, us to be re-ordained. So are they partners in apostolic ministry? It's tricky. They do have apostolic succession, but we also have to be honest and acknowledge that we still ask for Reform in Rome.

I'm Orthodox myself and that's something I've noticed with Anglo-Catholics too. The branch theory thing really just doesn't work for us. I appreciate Walker's consistency though when he says he wouldn't stop people from joining churches he believes are partners in the Apostolic Ministry.

The Russian Orthodox accepted Archbishop Beach fully as an apostolic brother around 2015. Also, Rome accepts Anglican ordination as valid if a priest were to transfer... and they get to stayed married! Which I think is a funny quirk.

@@Bellg I just glanced back through the articles, and I realize I stated that too strongly. In 2015, several Anglican bishops and our archbishop travelled to Moscow to promote ecumenicism. They met with Patriarch Kirill, and worshiped together. I could have sworn I also read that they ritually received them, but I can't find it at present. Sorry about that!

Anglicanism has split into many "factions". Even Bishop Michael Nazri-Ali who is one of the founding members of ACNA, supposedly the "beacon of light " in traditional Anglicanism (vs woke Anglicans) have given up and became a Catholic.

If you visited this church's website, or a service, it is not liberal at all. This church isn't ACNA, but APA. It had quite a high church feel. I've visited and it was very different and ethereal in old verbiage.

Would love to see an interview with a reformed Anglican at some point. Perhaps Lee Gatiss or Julian Dobbs. Anglicanism is a very rich tradition which extends beyond the Anglo-Catholic view people often think of.

This comes back to the value of humility. They see everyone as on a pilgrimage and journey of learning. They acknowledge the reality that not everyone is trying to walk out learn. They acknowledge that at times they have changed their minds, learnt and grown. They therefore walk with you on a way that allows you to do the same and is open to you being part of God's ongoing transformation in them. This is Anglicanism at its best. It is a double-edged sword. In reality we know that there are those who parade around politicking to get what they want and make everyone else agree with them and this approach doesn't really defend against that well. But in denominations that do safeguard well, the rigidity also often precludes true exploration and growth and you up with mere compliance. Knowing this, Anglicans don't bunker down in one camp or the other, but seek to find a third way - a new way forward. They know the third way will eventually hit an emphasis where it no longer works, but when that time comes, they will look for another 'third way' that takes with it the strength of the approaches before (Anglicans don't throw the baby out with the bath water).

There is nothing wrong with having clear beliefs or a logical ecclesiology and you aren't better or "more open minded and stuff" or experiencing more spiritual growth for being a member of a church that points to wherever the current wind blows. Christ founded a church of truth, not one of endless second guessing

I became Episcopal because this church allows me to question any and everything without fear of judgment. I have found this freedom has ironically drawn me closer to Jesus than I ever was before. I think this is because of the Anglicans belief in using reason as the third leg of discernment. We are encouraged to always use reason as equally as important and necessary when viewing any and everything. I think this is perhaps the very best aspect of Anglicanism, Episcopal church in the USA, for me. Reason keeps us from straying into fundamentalism and legalism.

Anglicanism gets a bad rap for issues that I do not think are unique to the church at all, especially when compared to the apostolic traditions. When I was an evangelical, the lack of confessional unity bothered me, until I came to believe that this is how the church functioned until the Reformation. We have Scripture, the creeds, and the episcopate to guide us (albeit one divided today), not a time-stamped confessional statement of all beliefs. Though we do have local statements of belief/confessions that aren't binding on the whole church. Anglicans get dunked on for not having a scholastic definition of all the sacraments and soteriology, but the Orthodox get a free pass for their tradition of appealing to Mystery. For example, real presence is not an optional belief in Anglicanism, but the method in which the body and blood are consumed is, just as it had been until Rome dogmatized transubstantiation in the 13th century at Lateran 4. And the last thing is succession. A lot of folks think Anglicans did not care about the sacraments or apostolic succession until the Oxford Movement, but the Book of Common Prayer proves that to be false. There has never been a Sunday in the last 500 years where the Anglican liturgy did not describe the Eucharist as a sacrifice, both our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and reception of Christ's sacrifice for the remission of our sins. Anglicans may have disagreed with it, but the liturgy never swayed. And the same is true for orders. The 1552 ordinal is very clear that a priest is stepping into a unique sacramental role for consecration and absolution. And yes, it's true that Rome rejects our orders. But the East rejects Rome's orders/sacraments too. That's not a unique reaction in church history, just a sad reality.

Why in your case is the union between a Anglican and a Roman Catholic difficult? Since, the 2 Churches have practically the same Faith! Many individual Anglicans are closer to a type Benedict 16th type Catholic than a liberal Modernist Roman Catholic and a Conservative type Roman Catholic. Actually, many Anglicans, I come across are way more Catholic in Faith and practice than the majority of Roman Catholics, I come across in my life.

I took it as a complement, given she’s a fairly conservative/traditional Catholic. However I also found it mildly amusing since I’m really more old High Church (Andrewes/Laud) than necessarily later Tractarian Anglo-Catholic

I think the question is very similar to "Why should someone be Antiochan Orthodox?" or "Why should someone be Greek Orthodox?" The answer seems to be "English-specific Liturgical Beauty", and fair enough! Since they are claiming apostolic catholicity, you could view Anglicanism as kind of an English Orthodox church that emerged and diverged late. Of course, I remain concerned, or in other words, it remains to be shown that Anglicanism has apostolic catholicity; since the line that divides them, the Act of Supremacy (1534), is qualitatively very different than the Great Schism (1054).

Anyone could belong to any Protestant denomination but not Anglicanism. Look at the origin of Anglicanism. The church was founded over a need to find a male heir to the throne and to consolidate Henry XVIII's kingship. It was not over theological and doctrinal differences. That is why Anglicanism is a mix between Catholicsm and Protestantism - a result of using religion as a front to cover the political agenda.

When does Anglicanism start ? 2 to 5th century or "the people, institutions, and churches, as well as the liturgical traditions and theological concepts developed by the Church of England." It is common nowadays when people say Anglicanism to mean the Church of England (COE) - from Henry XVIII onwards and the various Anglican sects that originate from the COE from this time. 2. The Anglican Church that existed between the 2 and 5th century accepted the Pope as their leader and came into communion with Rome after that. The Anglicans accepted all Catholics dogmas and doctrines and were in full communion until Henry XVIII self appointed himself as the head of the COE, replacing the Pope for himself. Then the rest of his subjects, Thomas Cranmer and the rest gradually introduced more and more Protestantism especially after Edward VI ascended to the throne. The COE took a turn towards Protestantism and is no longer the Anglican Church of the 2nd to 5th Century which has zero Protestant beliefs.

I was raised a Roman Catholic in predominantly in the UK and for a spell in Nigeria where I originate from. I am an Anglican now. Have been for the last five years. I'm a much better Anglican than I ever was as a Catholic. As an Anglican, I feel closer to God and Christ because rhe way we worship is more inclusive and an extension of God's unconditional love. The Catholic church felt more exclusive to me. Anglican spirituality to me is the most natural.
