Same tbh mate. I do feel some people cross the line sometimes, and then shout about it - but it has its place and there’s so much to choose From you don’t need to go ‘further afield’ to print bad files

I'm an Ork player, and I've played the game for more than 25 years. 3D printing has brought back the joy of the hobby for me. All the new GW kits are so constricted and have nearly no extra bits, minimal options and it's hard to make two models that use the same data sheet different. But since I got my printer I can customise the heck out of my models again.
@NoobixCube
@NoobixCube Год назад
Friends regaled me of tales of the old days when you would literally buy a bag of ork bits by weight and make what you can. Now you can buy a box of just slightly too few to be useful, but two boxes leaves you with a couple of extras, so you might as well buy a third to round it out to two units, or some shit like that.

The argument that 3D models can be confusing only really works for as long as everyone is only using the same current model kit. I've seen dozens of different conversions using nothing but GW plastic that looks noticeably different from the original model but would still be legal, same goes for hand sculpting. Even older models can look substantially different, like when they recently reprinted the old metal Chaos Lord models from Fantasy and gave suggestions for running them as units from each of the 4 gods' factions, I can say for sure there are 3D print options that look closer to a Lord of Pain than the Slaanesh Chaos Lord does. Ultimately, your opponent and the venue you play at are the ones that decide what's OK or not, any other explanation is just trying to find justifications where none is needed. Your opponent could also refuse to play against you for using a kitbashed models or for using the wrong paint scheme for a faction and they're entirely within their rights to do so, same as if you 3D printed them, I'd personally say that person is a bit of a tool but that's still their choice. Also, personally, I see genuinely nothing morally wrong with 'stealing' model designs from GW, much like I don't really care if people pirate the latest Disney movie or Taylor Swift's newest album. If we're talking about a small independent operation then sure, a single sale can be a substantial amount of revenue and typically directly goes to the people creating the product. If we're talking about a company that makes more money than they know what to do with then I really don't see why anyone should care, especially when the people who actually designed the model, created the mold, and made the marketing material have all already been paid for their work and I highly doubt they're getting any extra royalties from the effort of their labour.

If it’s a casual pick up game and your opponent (in a store) doesn’t want to play against a proxy that is the right height and base width, I think I do reserve the right to think they’re unreasonable. Also some stores charge for table use these days so there’s no major obligation to buy from them in that instance.

Well put and I completely agree. There are many great creators out in the space and I think it improves the hobby. The geedubs likes to think of it as the warhammer hobby, but it really is the wargaming hobby. If you want to play in their space, it's understandable to play their way with their stuff. Outside of that, there should be room for making the game and hobby your own.

I mean how is that on the fence when it is just the centrist/balanced position? Yes you should not steal other peoples work but printing out you minitures made by a 3rd party artest iis also a yes. Also you could argue you can recast if a model is out of print(It's even how some games have stayed alive) just like you could argue if a video game is out of sell you can "pirate" it. Also depending on the store you could just buy dice, snacks to support them.

I was looking at one of my miniatures from GW one day. It was an older chaos model. Not old as in in ancient, just older. I think it was from the dark vengeance miniature line. It was some of my Crimson Slaughter models. Well to make a long story short, the amount of detail that was put into those miniatures and the way they were designed, they had to be sculpted in zbrush or blender! They were stl files that were printed out and cut up or sliced up in the same program. What I’m trying to say is, GE prints there own models for production. Most of their minis are 3 d sculpted these days. That’s why everything is so symmetrical and on point. You can not be that precise with traditional sculpting, I don’t care how hard you try. You shouldn’t steal there up, but let’s be honest, if you own the software it’s a little hard not to try your hand at coming up with some home brew chapters and possibly trying to recreate a favorite character. Sometimes the model they offer is not as good or old and outdated. So yeah your going to find a better model. Possibly one that’s a whole heck of a lot cheaper.
@wiggy357
@wiggy357 Год назад
GW need to address this better, they can’t stop it but they need to work out how too embrace it. The cost of models from GW is over the top, a prime example is the upgrade kit announced for HH, in comparison to the price to print it’s just disgusting. If we could buy the files direct then 100% we all would, but that’s the issue how doGW make that viable. If they were to work with for example CHITU or Lychee on how to include a Digital cert to verify you purchased a file to print this would go a long way.

Personally, I think Games Workshop is pretty good at creating lore, stories and art, but to be honest, I think they’re middling at model making, and middling at best at creating rules for games. Obviously it’s a very subjective, taste driven thing, but I far prefer many of the 3D creations by talented creators on my mini factory to GW’s. Like, for Eldar or Imperial Guard- man, those minis are old, and some really don’t look cool to me. Fine if others like it, but I’d rather pick others. Also, for Sisters, I really enjoy the Joan of Arc, holy elite warriors side of them, like in the seraphim, sacrosancts, or Celestine, but not a huge fan of the BDSM torture art style of like the Repentia or Arco-flagellants. Again, just personal preference. But most importantly, I’m not playing 40K. I think the lore is great, and I’ll pay for that, but I’m not playing that game system. I think they have pushed for complexity while confusing it for strategic depth. Man would they hate chess. I feel like I spend far more time wrangling with the rules than playing or strategizing against my opponent. So I just play One Page Rules, or Infinity, or Battletech when I’m feeling Mech like. The 3D models I’ve printed aren’t used in their system. What drives me nuts about this debate is how capitalism is used so one sided and selectively for GW. When they raise the prices 30% or create rules to require you to buy minis, they’re like “that’s capitalism baby.” But when people buy minis or support artists doing legal work for better models and far better prices, you know, out-competing GW on the fair open market, what do they do? Guilt trip and manipulate, say you owe them, that you have a moral imperative to support them financially. Weird how they remember morality when they stop making money because of capitalism. They never seemed bothered about copying everybody and every story, but suddenly start caring about copyright when it’s a small artist creating a science fiction human soldier. Last I checked, their whole IP is one tangled mess of copyright skirting. They didn’t invent sci-fi human soldiers fighting hive mind aliens, or power armor, or space marines. The emperor And imperium is so heavily inspired from Dune. In many ways, GW was at its infancy the off brand sci-fi game making legally distinct versions of far more popular IPs and ideas. That’s why it drives me crazy that they’re stomping on others for what they did. It drives me nuts that people defend them. They’re a multi million dollar business. They don’t need defense like a fair maiden. If they want to act like a ruthless business, then they need to be treated like one. If they want my money, they have to complete for it Fair and square. I don’t owe them anything. If they make a good product that I want to buy more than their competitors, I’ll pay for them. I like some of their lore and art, so maybe I’ll buy that. But I’m not paying $200 for 20 cents of unpainted, unassembled plastic and an extra $120 worth of 300-400 page textbooks I have to study so I can play a wargame that’s considered middle of the pack at Best by the wider Wargaming community. I can give $20 to an independent artist and feel like I’m helping an artist directly. I can print the minis they made for 20 cents each, then play a far easier, more fun game system that my friends can learn in a night.

I do believe that 3D printing is the ultimate future of the hobby that allows for a greater variety of sculpts and supports independent creators. Ultimately I 3D print all my minis for any game that I play as it's cheaper and means I have more unique forces. I'm also supporting independent creators this way. I understand the concern regarding taking proxies to stores to play a game but where do you draw the line on this argument. I can turn up to a LGS to play Warhammer with GW models only, none of which have been purchased at that store and I'm effectively doing the same thing as turning up with proxies that I printed. None of the money spent has gone to the store in question so by the logic of this argument I shouldn't be playing at that store unless my entire army has been purchased from that store. Certainly going to a local wargaming club there should be no issue with using proxies for any game. In fact many would probably encourage this as it means there are more opportunities for people to play different games using the same miniatures. I definitely agree that you should not be using 3D scans/direct copies of existing IP but should only support independent creators that are sculpting their own takes on various types of warriors. The other thing that 3D printing allows is direct access without stock concerns along with new and unique sculpts being made available all the time. Many of the sculptors also take direct feedback and involve their supporters/community in upcoming designs and themes meaning that you have greater opportunity to get directly involved in the designs and have models that are exactly what you want. I'm not a hater on GW but for the cost of 1 box of 10 Space Marines I can support between 2 and 4 independent creators for a month having access to a far greater number of minis and I only have to print out what I want whilst still having access to the rest without them taking up physical space.

I agree on what you say with bringing 3D proxies vs bringing models bought elsewhere. My personal take though is if you are playing at a LGS you should support the store in some way.This doesn't have to mean buying models, it can be a number of things (paint, basing materials, board games, etc..). I know whenever I happen go to the LGS I usually walk out with a couple new bottles of paint for example.

I'd love to buy a 3d printer, but I have space issues, anyway. I do hope further down the line, GW embrace 3d printing to sell their own STLs (just call them STCs GW, the lore connection is already there!) Some miniature companies have done this already, modiphius for example. It's a medium that i've happily bought from other people on etsy and the like, and I think it would be important as the tech has gotten easier and easier and if people seem to replicate plastic kits in a matter of days, maybe they should do the smart thing and just sell them themselves.

I agree on some of the points...but will disagree on others. 1. Playing at stores: So long as it's not a GW store or an official tournament I don't think it "should" be an issue...so long as you also support the store. This doesn't have to mean buying models; buy paints, board games, etc..., there are plenty of things that aren't GW models to buy. 2. Confusing people: .....there's how many armies in Warhammer?.....and how many units and weapons in each of those? Even if it's official I'm gonna be sitting there asking what's what because I might know my army(even then I'd need a cheat sheet to remind myself), probably won't know yours. I will say you should try and make sure the proxies somewhat resemble what they are meant to proxy and if you bring proxies, don't be annoyed if someone asks what's what; you brought the proxy, you explain. 3. Rip-offs: Ok... I'd say this is a grey area. First and foremost I am against Selling rip-offs, but not so much on free distribution (however won't cry if GW comes and strikes down the files, just gotta accept). Either way, like I aid...it's definitely a grey zone and I'm not a lawyer, so I dunno. These are just my personal opinions though, so grain of salt. 3D printing is a great thing and shouldn't be discouraged just because you aren't taking out a mortgage to afford an army XD. However, if you do: Support your FLGS and try to make knowing what's what as easy an experience as possible for both you and your opponent. Also don't rage if a store doesn't accept it, even if you don't agree with it, hopefully there are others that will. PS. sorry for the essay XD

Official GW stance on their website is if the model was fully custom like you made the 3d model itself yourself, then it's ok to print it out, same as using custom sculpts with putty, or kitbashing, wahtever, as long as you made it yourself. That said, if you go selling the 3d files/STLs online so others can use it, then it'd no longer be ok. Actual aproach to this by in store staff varies of coarse, some are fine, some still want like 70% of all minis present to be of official GW or such sold in store, it varies, so double check your local staff beforehand to know their stance on it. Heck, local one wasn't even aware of that post GW made about 3d prints being ok if custom done and not bought/sold files. Still, if you can a good point is to just use half real models, and make like alternate heads/guns, armor, logos, shoulders, etc... details on your units that makes them army look unique, but while still being directly based off of actual originals, that's the best area for everyone recognizing and figuring stuff out, it including actual bought stuff mostly so stores happy, and it looking cool and unique so you're happy.

They are weirdly named because Games Workshop doesn't make any STL files and they are famously protective of their IP. All the files are knock offs trying to not get caught and taken down by GW. There are tons of great mini STL files by other companies / creators that are great and can be used to play many tabletop wargames. Meh, I started buying recasts and 3D Printing because the only game store in my town is a Games Workshop store, and they wouldn’t let me use a GW model I bought because I didn’t buy it from that particular store. So now I can only play at home. At that point, I don’t care what’s on the table as long as I like it. And I don’t care about the morality of the issue given GW’s predatory behavior to consumers and content creators over the years. 3D Printing is relatively new, but recasting has been around forever, yet GW was still raking in record profits year after year for a while now. They aren’t hurting just because I don’t directly support them anymore.

Games Workshop is far to expensive here in New Zealand. Those new christmas box sets are going for $460 each. It's just retarded. I want to paint more to get better, but can't afford to make mistakes on models that cost loads. It's molded plastic, how much are their overheads?

Warhammer is just a game, and if i want to play with difference pieces than the ones that "come in the box" i am free to do so - in my own home with my friends. I can't play at a tournament, but never would anyways. 3d printing is just another method of using 3rd party miniatures, doesn't matter how they are produced. GW would get more of my money if they had reasonable prices. Support your local hobby shops and buy your painting and auxiliary supplies there. Edited to say that I will most likely buy whatever launch box for The Old World comes out... Fantasy is where its at.
@Vandralys

I can see both sides of this argument. Although I think this is a bad take. It's complex and you can equate it to either copyright infringement or fanart. And it really comes down to money. Don't make money off stl copies of GW models. Either selling the stls or prints. Make them as fanart all you like, I don't think anyone would encourage vilifying someone who downloaded and printed a fanart poster of GW IP. However I think vilifying a company selling said posters is fair. How this comes into play with playing the game- GW and any store can make any rules they want and that's their prerogative, if a store views 3d prints as damaging their business, go for it, ban them, that's a self-correcting problem. I 3d print and my store allows 'most' 3d prints. Although I don't spend less on Warhammer now that I print models, the money I save on models by printing 'some' I just spend on hobby supplies at my FLGS, I arguably spend more at the store now that I have more to paint etc and I still bought 2 Votann Boxes, 2 christmas battleforces, the whole range of vallejo xpress paints when they released and the odd unit box here and there in addition to printing.

I got into 3D printing because of the designing and customising options. All GW figures are monopose now and that's terrible in a large model army of 20+ of the same models in a unit. The argument that it takes money from GW is false, they were never going to get my money anyway.

listen. yes 3d printing full models is bad, yes. because you don't support your lgs or the company making the models for the game. BUT, a lot of GW's troop kits have the big problem of including a lot of extra arms with weapons, a few heads and maybe a few small accessories but not bodies and backpacks to use said left overs. the only deccent way of putting the left overs to use is to use them as dead bits on other armies or as kitbash parts. and to go out and buy more of the same kit to expand the army. those who are on a bit of a tighter budget, who don't have the possibility to buy more kits to expand their army. they want to expand their army as well. and the only way for them to do said thing is to 3d print the bodies and backpacks and whatever else they're missing to use the offical parts and reduce their pile of bits. and gw tanks? they go for anywhere between $50 and $80 for a single tank. you can get 10 3d printed tanks for the same price if not more! i'm one of the people in the camp of 3d print the bodies because it's frankly the only logical path of maximized usefulness of the box (army expansion) and less parts in the bitsbox, and with 10th ed it further cements this point. wherein 9th and back you had to use the specific variant as that variant i.e. a executor bolt rifle had to use the part that makes the executor bolt rifle variant. but in 10th a bolt rifle is a bolt rifle, use whatever part you want as it doesn't matter. my armies will troopwise (all troop choises ranging from 3 man up to the top limit of models in a unit) consist of 50% gw models and 50% semi legit gw models, 70% 3d printed tanks 30% gw tanks. and characters on a case by case basis

Hasbro does not own all dragons or all fictional and real dungeons. In fact they own 0. GW does not own “Space Marines” or plasma, melts, etc. it’s surprising how little they actually own as IP. Same way it is not illegal for a child to draw Batman; it is not illegal to print a 1:1 to copy of a model. Proxies are better anyway. It makes even the new GW stuff look boxy and outdated.

As you said in the video, no one will ever know what you’re doing in the comfort of your own home. GW's turf (their store, their tournament, whatever), GW's rules. You have to use GW models. Fine by me. So what about old models from the 90s? Are you supposed to feed those into the shredder every time GW releases a new model? They don't look identical to the current line. What about second-hand armies or models? Buying those hasn't supported GW, they've made no money off you, and yet you have official models. It's kind of short-sighted of GW to fight 3D printing in the consumer space, because we'll just go elsewhere for our models, and if we can't play on GW's turf, we'll just play elsewhere. I don't think people printing minis will ever be a big enough market to destroy GW, but they could have embraced printing, brought people into the fold. I know, because it's just the way I am, if I could get official 3D models from the same folks who make the game, I would pay a premium for GW's models over proxies from other companies, and you can (Patreon discounts notwithstanding) already pay as much for a bunch of digital files as you would for a box of minis, just you only need to pay that once for as many models as you want instead of once for every eight of the things. Given you might need two or three of any one box to actually get your army up to size, I'd probably not even complain about paying say 1.5x as much for the files as for one box, because then I could print ten boxes' worth for just the cost of the resin, and that's like 50c a mini. They could even still protect their physical model business by having, say, a one or two month physical exclusivity period before the digital release, like comic book publishers do. The hardcore players will always rush out and buy a box just to get it before the printing peasants. Personally, I look forward to the day when you can put in an order with your local game store in the morning, and then swing by and get your freshly printed models on the way home from work.
