I'm looking to go light brown on top of hair that I've used a bleach bath to remove dark blue dye from. It's sea green and this just helped me a lot! Straight to the point too! thanks
I'm going from a bleached blonde, about a level 9 or 10, to about a 6 WV (brown-violet base). I did buy some brown filler but wonder now if I should use a red filler instead. Years ago I learned the hard way about bases. I tried to go from bleached blonde to blue-black (boxed color on top of it) and wound up with blue hair before those colors were trendy!
Thanks for watching! It really depends on what you are going for. The red filler could enhance the warmth of your violet. LOL with the blue black at least it didn't turn into swampy green gray😂
Thank you very much for this video. I'm trying to dye my hair brown, however my hair is currently a salmon pink with yellow roots, a result of trying to pull out semi perm red dye. Now I don't know how to fix it due to the multiple colors. The top layer in the front of my hair is also EXTREMELY porous. I'm trying to avoid gree or see through hair. HELP!!! 😂 Thanks 😊
Thanks for the comments. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. If you are still dealing with this issue, there are many solutions but I will share the approach I would take. First, using the black and white filter on your camera, determine how much lighter or darker the pink is compared to the yellow. (I have a short video on this) Then, if they are within 2 levels of one another, pick the darker of the 2 and do an all over Demi color in a Neutral shade. (I have a video on this too 😂) This should bring your multiple colors much closer to balance and reveal what steps, if any, need to be taken next.
I NEED HELP ASAP!!! So, i want to dye my dark blonde hair a medium/dark brown. (it’s virgin hair) Do i need a filler? I’m on a budget and don’t know if i can afford to also buy orange dye…
Make sure to confirm your levels on your color brand of choice's guide. Usually 2-3 levels darker doesn't require a filler. If you really are dark blonde (most companies level 6) and you want medium brown( most companies level 4) then you should be fine with no filler. Avoid Ash formulations. Neutral should be a good bet. If your hair is very long, excessively dry or tangles easily try a warm neutral just to be safe. Good luck!
Could you do a "color melt" tutorial. I want to melt a chocolate brown to a blonde how can I do those Instagram color melts with a "0" green transition line? Any tips using clear and the filler and how to turn it into a tri-color melt... as in gradual dark to light?
Typically, you shouldn't need a filler. In the salon I might add a little gold to your formula just to make sure the color looks rich enough, but since I can't see your hair that's not a guarantee.
I should probably do a video about this. It depends on how dark or light your hair currently is, it sounds wired but now you would need to put the appropriate level and tone of red on top of the "swampy mess". If your hair is a cool green, you use a warm red one level lighter than your current level. It shouldn't make the hair any lighter but will keep it from getting too dark.
@@CosmoDad thank you, that is exactly what I did! First I picked a brass-free neutral medium brown (big mistake LOL) so I put a darker warm chestnut brown over and it definitely toned down that green! More of an auburn now but better than swampy brown 😅
Hi! I have been doing colorful face framing pieces the last few months. The last color I attempted was “neon orange” but it has washed out to a bright neon yellow. I would like to be the same color all over again, more so dark brown. Would I need a filler? How would I go about doing this to avoid unwanted tones? Tia
Thanks for watching, I'm sorry for the delay in answering. Chances are that if your hair is currently yellow and your goal is dark brown, you should still fill. Especially if the orange washed out quickly. This would indicate porosity. The added bonus of the filler is that it may help the brown color stay in your hair longer. Kind of like priming before you paint.
please help me!! I dyed my copper hair jet black because it had blue undertone thinking it will cover up to orange, and it did very well. But in some photos according to sunlights coming angle i can still see orange reflections on my hair, can i completely get rid off them?? Please answer!!!
If im going from like a level 4/5 ish medium brown to a level 4 VV do i need a filler? Or is a filler only needed when making a drastic hair color change
I still would. After all the color is formulated with the assumption that there is a certain amount of red already present in your hair. Red and blue make violet after all. It would be a safe bet
OKAY so I dyed my naturally dark brown/black hair to a natural brown and I HATED IT. So I tried dying it again a dark brown hair dye and the dark hair dye faded in about a good week. It’s not as light as the natural brown was but I have streaks of light brown/redish brown in my hair and I feel like crying sm. I’m not sure what to do in order to get rid of those streaks of brown and reds
Thanks for watching! It's kind of complicated. There are a few reasons why this could have happened and a few things that could be done but one thing is for sure. Now that your hair has been colored, it will never be quite back to your natural until it all grows out. Not knowing anything about your hair, I would guess you had previous highlights that were colored over or had uneven saturation during your color application. Either way going all over darker, the same as the streaks is the easiest fix or using an oxidative color remover like Color Oops and then using a final color closer to your natural. I do have a video about that one. Or judging by how fast the all over color faded, the uneven stripes may fade pretty soon too. Best of luck
I have split dye hair level 9 blonde on the left level 4 brunette on the right. I’m looking to use a color filler but don’t look good in red. Can I use a mix of purple and red dye before putting black over both?
Please help! I have super light (level 10) bleached hair and I want to go back to my natural color, which I think is a medium ashy brown. Do I need to use, like, a demi perm coppery red and then go back in with the desired brown color or is there a simpler way? Using brown or red protein filler instead? Also, this video was wonderfully informative! I knew I needed to fill my hair, but I didn't really know the science behind why I needed to (that the hair dye 'thinks' I'm going to be lightening first so it compensates by having blues/greens to counteract the oranges/reds).
There are a few more variables having to do with the physical condition of your hair but you typically need to fill two levels lighter than your target. and for an ashy result you wouldn't want to add too much red, just prevent green. So maybe fill with a 6g if your goal is a 4A. Sometimes you can formulate your formula to fill and tone at the same time. It's possible that you could use a medium brown/copper or medium golden brown without filling and end up with a medium brown ash result. Thanks for watching, and good luck
@@CosmoDad Thanks for the reply! I have a couple more questions lol. My hair is orange right now, like a pumpkin spice color with Arctic Fox semi perm dyes. Is this an acceptable filler to go a 5A ashy brown? Or would I need to maybe use a protein filler, and if so, is a red or a warm brown protein filler better?
thank you for the explanation but i still need your help: my hair is greyish blue/purple rn and i'm planning to go back to black..do i have to put red on it first, so it wont turn out muddy?
Thanks for watching! Based on your description of the color, my guess would be absolutely. Like a level 3 or 4 red brown to maximize your chances of getting the color to deposit fully and correctly.
I NEED HELP ASAP. My hair is medium purple in some places and super light purple in the rest. I’ve let me roots grow out for a while (I’m a brunette) and I want all of my hair to be brown. What filler can I use to do this?! Red?? I don’t want my hair to turn green!!
Even with purple undertones, your hair is not likely to turn green. If it were me, I would try to remove as much of the purple as possible with out damaging your hair. Like with Malibu CPR. And then color your hair with a neutral 2 levels lighter than your goal. Then based on the undertones still visible color your final formula. For example, if after coloring with your lighter neutral the hair still appears slightly purple, then Make sure your final formula contains gold tones to neutralize the violet
How do you know which base filler to start w if you are natural grey/white? And want to go to a slate gray? Ive been doing black forever... and want to go to a graphite type grey. The strong contrast of the black is aging me imo And not a fan of brown or red tones
You don't tend to need a filler when aiming for grey. Your biggest challenge is removing pigment. Going from black to essentially white is a long slow process when done correctly. But then it's just a matter of tinting/toning the nearly white. If you only remove the previous color enough to be left with orange, you will not achieve grey
@@CosmoDad ha... no no. Im just going to do the slate on my naturally grey roots. Going to let it just blend into the black over time. So I am looking to get a slate (dark) grey to cover my naturally white grey. Which is too stark of a contrast against the black, as the roots grow in
With most professional colors, if you are going 2-3 levels darker there is no need to fill. Especially if you want it to still be light. If I am reading your questions correctly, you have multi dimensional hair containing level 8 ,probably 9, and 10. Often just doing 8Gold or even 9 will make you feel dark enough. Worst case scenario, it's not dark enough and you then go a level or 2 darker. Depositing more color is waaay easier on the hair than going too dark initially and then lightening it
My hair is bleached, and had light brown hair dye. The light brown faded so now it's just bleached (not too blonde, I'd say a veryyy dark blonde.) I want it back light brown; do I need filler or can I skip it? :)
Hi ! This has helped me but i have a question! My hair is Honey blonde on the ends, dark blonde and a mixture of red tones and oranges tones throughout the mid of my hair and the root. What filler would i use if i’m trying to go medium ash brown ...
Since fillers are mostly to help avoid an ashy result, it sounds like you may not need one. Next step may be to color a test strand with a neutral or ash formula
Thank you! I have a question: I was bleaching to a level ten before and now I'm trying to go copper, strawberry blonde. My ends are over processed though and aren't taking color as well as the roots. What can I do to get even color?
Reds tend to be a special case and tend to follow the opposite rule. Sometimes the hair is over processed and it won't reliably hold color. Assuming this is not the case you may want to fill with a Neutral 2 levels lighter than your target red. For example if your goal is a 8Copper then you might tone with a 10N or even a 9N first, but only on the parts that are looking "hollow"
