I had a boss who is from Philippines, he is the best boss I ever had in my 29 years of professional life. he always offered us a lift in his car from west to east side-of Singapore. a great family man, always inspire happiness, very sociable and highly generous to poor people, i guess from his christian upbringing. the lady is also right, they are everywhere in the world, saw some pinoy in rio de janeiro, anchorage, latvia, stockholm, mostly hotel and IT professionals

My travel to Singapore was just perfect, everything about this country is beautiful. Architectural design, way of transportation & view from different places was amazing. I think this lady Majoy should be given a PR, she’s very well spoken & given her number of years of staying there, I should say that she could be a good asset to your country.❤
We had a Filipino helper and she was our greatest inspiration. She is a kind, lovely, hardworking, respectful person. We still communicate and exchange season greeting after she left us 10 years ago. Filipinos are gems.

I’ve 2 ex Filipino colleagues who are a married couple who worked and lived in SG for many years. They’re the nicest and kindest people and unfortunately they had to leave Singapore for Canada as they were unable to get PR. It was heartbreaking to see wonderful people who contributed so much and live in Singapore leave because they were just unable to get PR. I wish there is a way to filter out and keep all of these wonderful foreign talents who genuinely love Singapore and contribute to our society. ❤

sadly in the early 2000s, most perception of filipinos from us singaporeans were being maids and helpers, but when their middle class fair skinned professionals came in mid 2005s, perspectives changed since then

Sadly my personal experience with Filipinos (two of my ex-colleagues) were very bad. Both of them were very arrogant and they gave me hell. But our family helpers are Filipinos and they are wonderful people. I have a friend who is a Filipino and she is an angel. I think at the end of the day, we must learn to treat others decently. If you work here and you give bad impression of your country, people will stereotype you and have a bad opinion about your country. I have worked overseas and I always remind myself that I am an ambassador of Singapore and I want people to respect my country.
I think its a individual issue. My wife, a Filipino, was bullied by her own Filipino colleagues because she was not a Graduate and somewhat older than them (her supervisor). I also notice that those Rich Filipino also behave like TaiTai,vwith people below them... servant. But the same could be said about some Rich people, everywhere...
I have to agree with you. I have had bad experience with my Filipinos colleagues. I treat them well but apparently they do like to gossips and spread fake rumours of others. And I’ve experience first hand on their crab mentality. of course I believe not all are like this. Just from my personal experience, I do work with different nationality, but it seems like this traits comes mostly from this group.

I think most Singaporeans are generally, if you show respect we show respect. You know? Its not about respecting Singapore per se but just generally be a respectful person. If you are one, you will find Singaporeans warming up to you quick

To each his own. People will be happy where they choose to be happy. Some need to work very hard in a place they’re not too happy about to achieve their goals. Some are fortunate enough to live & work in the same place they’re happy in. Again, to each his own. Just wish the good for everyone.
Most of the nurses I know that worked in SG are now here in USA. They told me that its only a stepping stone for them to stay in such a small country. I dont blame them. For such a small city opportunities are very little.
@@migovasquez0303 Many uses Singapore as a stepping stone to the bigger world. Our training, skills, language proficiency and work ethics are recognised in many parts of the world. In all my travels, many thought of us as China chinese but when I mentioned Singapore, their attitudes and perceptions changes for the better. The Singapore brand name is indeed invaluable!
I would say, Filipinos who moved to Singapore in the early 2000s are the ones who Majoy embodies: hardworking, frugal, respectful, and is willing to integrate and even pick up Singlish (which is ironic considering there was such a government backlash against Singlish during that period). I'd say the Filipinos who are immigrating to Singapore in more recent times are the ones who usually carry attitudes and behaviors that leave a sour taste. Many Filipinos migrating to Singapore now are those who come from pretty well-off upper-middle to upper class families and for them, making it to Singapore has become a sort of ego boost which empowers them to have this more "show-off, arrogant" behavior. I would assume this big difference ultimately lies in the fact that Filipinos who migrated earlier to Singapore (like my parents) often came from the middle-class then who couldn't get a job that pays well and I would assume everyone then never thought Singapore will become what it has become today like Majoy said in this video. More recent immigrants saw how Singapore succeeded and now they jump on the bandwagon because they see it as stable. Singapore in the 90s wasn't as popular a destination for Filipinos and Filipinos would be very critical of the draconian laws here in Singapore, ironically now they admire those draconian laws because they see it as the source of discipline that allowed Singapore to succeed. I am more privileged in that I was granted citizenship after attending my entire schooling here and serving NS, and like Majoy, I also have my fair share of accent changes. Nothing feels more homely than being able to converse in Singlish when I find a Singaporean overseas. However, I've noticed more recent immigrants from the Philippines are actively trying to avoid integrating much - they would avoid Singlish like it is the plague even if everyone in the group is conversing in Singlish. Perhaps I am generalizing, but that is my observation. Filipino immigrants of my generation were quick to embrace the "Singaporean identity" in whatever shape or form. Recent ones are actively trying to stick out by emphasizing their Filipino-ness. As Majoy rightfully says, everyone should know their place in Singapore and frankly, recent Filipino immigrants who are arrogant about their identity or wealth and success in the Philippines irk me off - the nice Filipinos are either the laojiao immigrants from pre-2010 or those working in hospitality and health institutions.
I am a local born Singaporean. I agree with you on the latter about some arrogant Filipinos. We locals noticed it. The first Filipino family I knew were my classmate and schoolmates. It was in 1980. They love Singapore but had to return to their home because, their father was ill. They were so humble. They still love the VERY HOT AND SPICY FOODS and often request for the spicy hot curry flavour Maggie mee. 😂 My Filipino colleagues from 1990s were working hard and, nice people.
As a born and raised Filipino, this is an interesting read. These types of people are definitely existing, and I hate show off/arrogant Filipinos, these folks usually come from new money families. I love this interview. Yes Filipinos are resilient people. Singapore has changed in their acceptance of Filipinos compared to back in the days. Now you even see Filipinos working in Changi. Lovely country, lovely people. The proximity to the Philippines the distance makes it bearable to work in Singapore and fly back to visit families in the Philippines

That is so true Filipinos are everywhere wherever you go. We are the most hardworking people and the resilience that we have in order to survive. I agree with one of the comments here some are arogant but hey you can also find it most of the times in others. But generally speaking we have a heart that opens up that arrogance in them. We know have endured different challenges in life that’s why we need to spread positivity’s and love and unity which really and honestly the world needs so we can understand each other. I was born and worked in Singapore (& lived in HK and Beijing). Am now in Dumaguete, Philippines. No contest, Philippines wins hands down on quality of life and cost of living. But then I'm an expat who owns his own apartment on the seafront. Given that, I live great (with no rent) on US$1-2,000 - easy. I once explained that to my Singapore financial advisor and she looked down. I said to her: "I guess you need to earn about S$8-10,000 a month to live reasonably well here? And she just nodded. Still love Singapore (prefer HK), but would never live there. The stress and the crowding! Lol.
Your speech is eloquent, poise like local, though you look like native Hawaiian. Think you should try as a PR again. The respect you have for our cultures, people, your roots and the home values you instilled in your kids are really commendable.

Can't really stereotype lah. I have colleagues here working for 20 years and another one over 15 years and they have better job offers from other countries. But my boss manage to convince them to stay and they find here quite easy to get around.
I do not see anything wrong with using Singapore a stepping stone If they have the ability. People all seek a better pay, better career, better life. More Singaporeans should venture out of their country to know what life is like beyond this very small island state.

Filipinos are in general good people - those who are from low income families who go abroad to earn a living sadly represent being Filipino. As much as status, education and upbringing matters, nobody should generalized being Filipino. One thing is certain - many are poor , the reason for people leaving the country but there are those from better families who stay behind but whose characters and attitude are not identified as being Filipino. There are the good and the bad always. That also applies to Singaporeans as we've experiend a very rude arrogant man during one of our trips . This is such a great interview. A very interesting lady who had came in full circle in life with all her experiences. I love travel to Singapore . It's always a yearly thing for us. Singaporeans having such a cool country are one of the coolest people on earth.
Educated migrants are well insulated and more accepted by upper-class locals since they have more in common. Migrant workers are different and more vulnerable to discrimination and spite.
Keep applying for the PR status. You may get it after the 10th application. I have Pinony friends who became Singapore citizens after being a PR for a while and they are not of Chinese descent. So, it is not impossible. By and large, Singaporeans are colour blind to skin colour. The forefathers of Singaporeans are migrants. So, we tends to treat migrants with kindness and fairness. It is how one can contribute to Singapore's well-being. Acceptance of foreigners is a given in Singapore. Just do not go around with a sense of self-entitlement. Never commit a crime in Singapore.
$8/$10 for that Bee Hoon set she's talking about is definitely not true. You can definitely still get it within, $3+ or $4, maybe $5 at the Max (see what I did there), anything more and its just, you're buying it from the wrong place, or maybe because its the CBD area

One tree cannot represent an entire forest of foreigners. While there are good and terrible individuals in the world, Singapore and Singaporeans in particular will always welcome the good person with the proper heart because there isn't much space on this little island. Therefore, we want the number to consist of excellent people rather than bad apples.
I am a local born Singaporean. I always ask foreigners who work here Why would you want to be a PR or SC ? There are much better places to live with nicer views, etc. Here is a good place to earn a living and, I know most foreigners use Singapore as a bridging/stepping stone to gain experience and prove of working overseas before moving to other countries to work such as in Europe, USA, etc.

In Singapore, Filipinos are top of the list in employment opportunities and commands a higher salary than any other Asean or Asian worker with the same occupation.
I've lived in Singapore and I miss living there. Considering how erratic the job market is, it is indeed a privilege to work and stay in Singapore for 15 years on EP. Most Filipino expats do appreciate Singapore/Singaporeans for accepting their hardworking, humble and appreciative Asian colleagues.
I can totally relate to her as a Filipino working in SG for 17 years. Tried to apply for PR 2x but both rejected, from then on I did not try to apply anymore, but I'm very fortunate to work for 3 companies here in SG and been renewed for my S Pass every 2-3yrs. I would say I am one of those lucky ones who were able to build a career in Sg although it's not always smooth sailing, but I would say I manage to survive all the ups and downs of living and working in Singapore.
Basically if you are not getting your education in sg, even if you are highly educated in other areas e.g. in US or in Europe, it's still extremely hard to get a PR.
As a Singaporean, I'm used to working and meeting different people from other countries. I've worked with Filipino, China, Indian, Burmese, Europeans, etc. It's kind of normalised here since I was in Primary school. I even have a Canadian friend at Secondary school. Then Burmese friend and Norwegian friend. They are all kind people so I get along with them. My brother-in-law is British and he told me that I speak very well. I explained to him that we were taught social and interaction skills at college. Our first language is English and we use UK standards so that might explain why we can speak properly if we chose to. Of course with friends and family we communicate in Singlish. Even my 10 year old speaks Singlish because I think his friends made fun of how he speaks. His teachers also told me he sound like an American so he picked up Singlish from his friends ever since. It did bothered me initially when he started speaking in Singlish but I can't stop him from learning our language so I had to let it go. I just want my kids to speak proper English. 😅
Very interesting to hear a Filipino say that she doesn't feel comfortable in the USA. It seems to be a dream for may Filipino's to migrate to the USA. Her children would not be Singapore citizens, so eventually they will have to settle somewhere else that accepts them.
I been to SG and I cant stand the place. Its very humid like bangkok, very clean and sterile. I am from the US and I can never live in a small city like that. America is so diverse and huge and the quality of life here is so much better than SG. I travel to Europe a lot and latin america is my playground. Being able to speak both spanish and portuguese is a plus.
9:45 I am very sorry if you have cause to feel that you need to "know your place" for Singaporeans to accept you more easily. We all live together in this society, and should help and respect each other in all aspects of life here, regardless of nationality. If a person is rude, then that person is rude. Doesn't matter where they're from. The same, if someone is kind. The world is getting smaller. And for people to exhibit xenophobia, is very irksome. Of course, would be best for a foreigner to be respectful of, and blend in with, local cultures and laws. But one can expect them to forget and make mistakes sometimes. No big deal. There are some locals who are unhappy that there are many foreigners here who "took their jobs"... but don't pay any attention to those idiots. :D

Australia is the perfect place for me as a Filipino. Went to Singapore last year, and people looking at you from head to toe. I didn't like it, I’ve never experienced it in Australia🇦🇺
One of reason for foreigners apply for PR / Citizenship rejection is due to professions. I have Pilipino friends who got their Citizenship but most of them are in the medical field and IT.
Filipinos think Singapore is paradise? That is something new. I have seen quite a number of Filipinos commented online stating Singapore too strict, no freedom, got monitored 24/7, cost of living too high etc... They mostly will state Hong Kong or Australia is a better alternative.

I had EP for 16 years before moving to Germany. Its a great place to live and work, though very expensive and work hours were looooong. i sometimes miss the food, but i am glad i moved to Germany, where there is work-life balance. I dont think i can go through 12-hour work days again.

For me I consider Singapore as my second home. People are loving ( not all locals and other expats) but atleast you can still run or jog even in the middle of the night and still feel safe . I had some experience of bad treatment from locals but not to the extent where you'll be discriminated against and if you can rate it is just 2/10 experience so for me this is the best place to live apart from your own country

i definitely agree with her it is certainly a privilege to live here. while i dont get the common racial treatment from the locals at all as in never, because i pass as chinese, luck of the mix since i am half chinese i would never think i belong here and gratitude is always in my forefront in my mind. but something she said will always be true, it's the very true stressors that are the ones that is focused on here. going to the gym, public transport shouldnt be a stressor so you can focus on the job, on the family. this is something the US and its children like the philippines should realign their vision on. i like the shade she threw, if you're on on EP, just because youve been here so long, know your place. the accent thing is normal for us Pinoys. we just mimic to accommodate with whom we converse with
@@MAJOYDACIA on the side of stressors, if a country want their citizens to be productive, then make it possible for them. the philippines speciallly metro manila is very similar as you described your experience in JKT. the mass public transportation in Metro Manila is not convenient. employees need to leave the house at the minimum 2 hours early to be on time for work. you've not even reached your work place and you're already exhausted and this just make you not bring your A game for work, school, and even to enjoy a concert. it affects all aspects of life. personally, i've not visited any museum in Manila but i've been to the national gallery and museum in Singapore and visit at least 2x yr bec of iLight and SG night to light which i watch every year since 2017. on the side of knowing our place - i dont want to get kicked out of any country regardless of any perceived contribution to it, this is bare minimum of any expat in any country. getting kicked out of a country is on your record for life. i do believe it is shade she threw! LOL, i still recall the incidents of the uncles at gantries of condos and their shouting matches with c level banking people who just treat people like guards as though they are beneath them. personally i treat people how i want to be treated. i dont want to get yelled at, who has the time for that hahaha
