We did this experiment already, at first it was weird but got used to it... during thr pandemic when all of the shows were doing it without an audience
Ironically I was Anti-Pavloved,… or would it still count as Pavlovian Conditioning? Pretty much whenever I hear a laugh track, I instantly sour and immediately feel the joke is shit, even if it’s the 1-in-10,000 chance it actually is funny.

I read an article that said most companies were using the same laugh tracks for several decades so technically we all grew up hearing the laughter of people long dead while our favorite shows. And that $hit stayed with me.
I just realized that laugh tracks are a genius way to pad out runtime. That one line if dialogue in Friends was like 2 seconds longer than it needed to be. If every joke has a few extra seconds added to it, you could easily eke out an extra minute or 2 of runtime, which is huge for tv shows.
Actually it's even more effective in the long run than what your implying The time spent on dialogue is basically doubled. So by the end of the show they've got multiple minutes of free space they didn't have to use
Yup filler filler. Tried watching Gabriel Iglesias mr cooper or whatever and i was shocked it had a laugh track. Maybe just to help people that speak languages other than English is the only justification I could give. But holy shit man can’t believe it’s still out there!
The Crosby family was so fucked up lol. Putting aside the fact that he beat his kids (normal for the time so, whatever), His 4th son killed himself after learning that he had used up all his inheritance, his 2nd son killed himself after a divorce, his first son died of lung cancer, and his 3rd son was a drunk (and frequently drove drunk)who had 4 different marriages before dying of a heart attack.
I used to watch Friends, and I can confirm that the laughs are pretty overused, but it's still entertaining nonetheless. Someone might reply that "Friends is a bad show", "Friends is boring" etc. but people have different opinions, and not all people can agree on something. Edit: I might have been a hypocrite on this one. I did quit watching Friends because I found other things entertaining. Sorry guys. Also, try watching it. Maybe you will like it, maybe you won't. Just try to watch a few episodes because some shows get better each episode.
Tbh I feel like that made the joke more funny. That being said, I love The Office, so ‘awkward silence’ alone or the video of the piece of bread falling over make me laugh. But slap a laugh track on it and I’ll hate it.
Personally, I find that laugh tracks completely *remove* any humor in a scene, even if I was laughing at it a moment before. The less canned laughter, the better.
Married With Children had the live audience cracking up so wildly that the cast (especially Ed) had to regularly wait to deliver their next lines because otherwise they wouldn't be heard over the laughter.
This is actually very common for live performances. I did theater in high school and I remember the director telling us to pause when the audience laughed, and not to say the next line until the laughter stopped.
People seem to forget that the show was made with a laugh track in mind. If there wasn't, there wouldn't be these awkward pauses. So of course if you take something away from the show it won't work as well.
Not exactly that but it's made with a studio audience in front of them. They pause so they're not shouting over the audience. People like this edit those laughs out but purposely leave in the pauses to make it work for them. Those pauses wouldn't have been there if the show didn't have an audience so leaving them in is dumb

A very small percent of episodes on friends actually used laugh tracks, but on a few of them where they didn’t have a live studio audience present, they used laugh tracks recorded from previous episodes of the show, and this must have been one of them. Or maybe there was an audience, the person who edited this just took the laughter out.
Yeah too many people talk about "laugh tracks" without knowing what they're talking about. They ignore that a lot of these older shows were performed like plays with an audience in front of them. You wouldn't moan about everyone around you laughing at a comedy play

The purpose of the writing behind the show Friends was not really to make the audience sympathise with the main characters but instead to just sort of empathise with them and relate to many of their life situations. Like while the main character lives may have their ups and downs they live in nice spacious apartments in a geat part of Manhattan and most of them have good jobs, so they probably have better lives then most of the viewers watching. However their foibles and screw-ups are very relatable to many people watching, which is where most of the humour comes from. People can say "haha, I've made a mistake like that once before". (The rest of the humour is the characters getting into absurd comical situations.)

I would definitely want to be friends with them. I’d want Chandler to tell me jokes, Phoebe to give me a massage, Monica to make me dinner, Rachel to go shopping with me, Joey to give me a ticket to his latest play, and Ross to give me a ticket to the science museum.
Just imagine listening to those laugh tracks knowing that those came from the people who lived back then and prolly all of them are gone by now, man sends shivers down my spine 💀
there’s another way of doing a laugh track, which is my favorite way of doing it fill a theater and record their actual laughs as a backdrop and then sync it to the broadcast you get all the benefits of the laugh track but it hits 10x harder cus it’s genuine
All sitcoms with a laugh track: *awkward without laugh track* Everyone: *no response* Big Bang Theory with a laugh track: *awkward without laugh track* Everyone: *hey that’s illegal*
The gap sounds weird because the dialog tempo is timed for laugh tracks. Cut out the gap to reflect a more natural tempo and these shows will be funnier (but lame jokes are lame regardless).
I noticed this when I tried watching friends. 😂 I wasn't super into it, but even in the earliest episodes it's just a bunch of "friends" being hurtful to each other with long pauses in between insults.
It seems like you're confusing "laugh track" with "canned laughter". Any show that contains an audio track of laughing is a laugh track, but not all shows use canned laughter. Now in truth practically no show has a laugh track that doesn't include canned laughter, since they'll always engineer it to sound how they want it, but some try to pull a fake "oh it's not a laugh track, that's the studio audience", but that is still a laugh track.
It’s true. A lot of laugh tracks were just meant to make the real laughter more consistent. The scene was filmed in front of a real audience who laughed, but they weren’t gonna get the same reaction on every take, so they use the laugh track to even it out.
Of course. Because you're half arsing the job. You've edited part of it but purposely left in another part that doesn't work without the first part. The actors pausing so they're not yelling over the audience doesn't make sense if you take out the audience
I must have gotten so used to hearing laugh tracks in the sitcoms I watched while growing up that when they stopped using them... I never noticed because I always just tuned that out anyway. And when I think of things that make me laugh in the older sitcoms that had laugh tracks, my memory doesn't even have the laugh track. So I guess that, for me... it doesn't seem to matter if they have one or not.
Of course if you replace laughs with silence, it's going to sound awkward. What you should do is cut out the long pauses where the laugh track was supposed to be, then it would be less awkward.
