With the upcoming release of Session, I figured it would be a good time to go back and take a look at the history of Skateboarding games, such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Skate. These games helped to define my childhood, but today they are dead. In today's video we are going to be covering the rise and fall of these games.

I think it also has something to do with the popularity of real life skateboarding. I'm not saying skateboarding is dead, not at all, but in the 00s it simply was more popular. Skateboarding has always been kind of associated with rock/punk music and in the 00s there was a lot more poppunk music hitting the charts. There was more emphasis on skating in popular media (MTV shows with people like Bam Margera etc, and Nickelodeon cartoons like Rocket Power, ya feel me?) The subcultures who generally enjoy skating, like emo, punk and obviously skaters, were in larger amounts back then, compared to now. Skateboarding today is simply less popular than it was back in the day. It will probably return someday. Like all trends, popularity always goes back and forth.

I would say it's not just skateboarding games that have died, but the overall video game genre for extreme sports in general. As a kid I remember constantly playing titles like Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, 3Xtreme, SSX Tricky, Cool Boarders, and of course THPS. We've had some games over the past decade, but they've been few and far between, and also generally bad. I think this is due to the fact that extreme sports were a lot more mainstream back in the 90's. We had them constantly being promoted in video games, toys (like tech decks), movies, television, clothing, art, and even music. Kids and teens also spent more time outside rollerblading, biking, and skateboarding. All of this combined made these types of games very popular. But as the digital age and Internet has evolved, we've become much more exposed to the surrounding world, and therefore are constantly forming new interests. The world of media was certainly much simpler 20-25 years ago, and we didn't have nearly as much control over what we consumed. The 80's culture seems to be coming back again, so who knows, maybe the 90's will as well. Perhaps we'll see a resurgence of extreme sports games someday soon.

@@Catcrumbs He already runs his own lines of clothing, skateboards, and the Boom Boom HuckJam. Skating's popularity has fallen over the years, and the Tony Hawk series was eclipsed by the short lived Skate series. The Tony Hawk arcade-y formula got old by 4 and was passe by Project 8. I think a skateboard game can still work in today's market, but I think Skate's more grounded style is the way to go. Any revival of the series should tread the more realistic ground forged by Skate if it wants to be popular.

I think the main thing you left out was the decline of skate/surf culture in the US. When we were kids everyone was wearing Vans, Billabong t-shirts, and telling people, "yeah, I used to skate, but I don't anymore..." when we never did in the first place (or maybe that was just me Lol). Funny thing is I have actually picked it up years later as an adult..

Is that really the case? If anything skateboarding seems more popular than it's ever been with leagues like SLS, big name corporations like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, etc. in the game as well as the sport now being picked up for the Olympics. Lots of girls/females skate now and many more female pros than ever before like Lizzie Armanto or Leticia Bufoni. Skateparks and skate plazas are literally everywhere now as well. Still see tons of kids skateboarding. I think if anything it's become far more mainstream than it's ever been and has lost a lot of the underground/counterculture aspect. It's almost a jock sport now.

@MidlifeCrisisJoe

Yeah people need to make the distinction between the culture (subculture really) dying and the sport/product. People still use skateboards - all the time even. And people still skate competitively and there's a definitely culture to skateboarders who do this all the time, but it's just not as pervasive as it was, nor does it have any real affect on the mainstream culture as a counter-cultural influence anymore. In the 90s to early 2000s there were tons of skaters out there but more importantly, their fashion and their attitude was pervading a lot of what normal people saw and wore and experienced. It was a sort of rebel/undercurrent/counter cultural movement in that it was seen as an alternative to the popular culture even if it wasn't really all that rebellious and it's not like that many people ever tried to shut it down (other than cops kicking kids out of public spaces who were trying to grind at the library or whatever). A big part of it is probably RU-vid, actually. One of the key things that made Skater culture a thing were the trick/bail videos everyone was making. And as you needed a camera man and more importantly, some kind of distribution of your videos with a distributor (who was still taking a pretty big risk on a niche market) you had to be either really good or your bails had to be really spectacular. RU-vid and cheap camera phones cut out both of those middle men, but it also meant no one was trying to sell anyone anything anymore, particularly themselves (at least not in the same way where money was actually being exchanged). This meant the quality went down overall and people lost a lot of interest.

This video is more like "how the tony hawk series died." EA was only the publisher of skate, black box was the developers. What really kinda happened was skate brought something that changed the genre in a better direction that represented skateboarding better. Originally skate was supposed to be a xbox arcade game that a couple black box employees made on the side as black box had alot of people who skated working for them. (I have a friend that was one development team.) So as it progressed, the higher ups gave them the go ahead as they seen it as a game changer to the genre. Game got big, but people didn't like stuff like camera angle or the lack of tricks. It still hit the thps franchise out of no where though and that franchise died when they tried to "get realistic" with the controllers. So skate took all the spotlight for the genre, so they made skate 2. Then the recession hit up here in canada as everyone expected and black box knew they were kinda screwed. So they went all out and rushed out skate 3 for the fans. Then black box went under, ea bought the company but they were hit hard by the recession too, so they let go of all of black box employees. That's how the skate franchise died. Black box did hint skate 3 was their last, ever hear of the saying "jumping the shark? " Lucky for people who don't know though, there was glitch found in the creator and the hardcore community took to it by making new parks that its like a new dlc map. The skate community I find actually keeps growing too. The guys behind project sessions actually is actually big into skate 3 hardcore community and started their game off feed back on a forum website called skatefluckit. The feedback is kinda why that games a bit hard lol. thank xbox for making skate 3 backwards compatible. its funny though, one of ea CEO has made it clear that he hates skateboarding games and uses thps5 flop as example of why it died. He's the same guy that kills any rumors or hype of a skate 4. That's why the die hard skate fans lost hope on a sequel. EA also won't give up the controls to skate either as they use them for other sport games. As for the skateboaring genre, its far from dead, just the big companies think that and won't make the investment. Its still alive though, just in the form of mobile games lol. But those kinda suck over time. The guys behind project session is french canadian, so if it flops at first, they will be too stubborn to let it die. Lol

lol this is a great comment my dude. such good insight into the industry and the recession that i honestly had 0 idea about. what mobile games have you played? i can't remember the name at the moment but i played one of the ones where it's like a top-down view of just the skateboard and you do tricks by flicking your finger around in different directions from different parts of the board. i think it might have been true skate or something. i payed the extra 3 bucks or whatever to unlock the unlimited slow-motion mode, and that shit was suuuper fun for a long time. but yea it got old eventually and i uninstalled. It's a shame the boys at Neversoft didn't understand what people loved about the tony hawk games, and that just because Skate was more realistic and sim-like, doesn't mean that's the direction Tony Hawk should go in. Yeah when you have a big empty place with nothin to do on it beside faltground trick in the middle of the 4th level of the game, i call that bad level design (and there is way more secret areas in the 2, there is even secret areas in secrets level (Bro come on the last level of the thps3 is a straight downhill leading nowhere, just admit it this game isn't as polished as thps2)

Uncreative producers and executives telling their creative teams what to do is the reason why ALL products fail. Why did skateboarding games die? the pure ego of company owners who don't trust their own teams. sales people putting their noses where they dont belong and trying to change the product for sales, instead of making a good product that sells its self by hiring a creative team and letting them have fun
@mrjohnnyk
@mrjohnnyk 5 лет назад
Exactly. Just look at the way the original THPS games were made. It was a passionate group of skaters who wanted to bring the sport to video games and make it fun and accessible to anyone. Then look at the way THPS5 was made, it was just some half-assed developer comprised of gamers who didn't even understand the sport who were employed to churn out a product that met marketing demands.

The issue is much deeper. The whole skate culture has entered a weird period. There has been a huge documentary about this. It all happened thanks to social media. People used to go to big tournaments to see sick new tricks, and to live and breathe the skate culture, but now, you can see them anywhere online. The "boom" effect is completely gone. There are millions of videos. Previously, in games, you were hyped to see those new sick tricks, but now you only care about stacking them... people are not interested anymore in such games, as well as other Xgames sports... snowboarding, BMXing...etc.
@brainrottedindividual
@brainrottedindividual 6 лет назад
i want to respectfully disagree. i have been skating for over 20 years and i never went to any contest. most skaters don't care about that stuff, nor do they watch competitive skateboarding. no one i know that skates cares about competitive skateboarding, but friends that don't skate like to bring that up towards skaters as to strike up a conversation maybe. what you are saying about the "big tricks" is also flat out wrong. big tricks happen in the streets and get made into covers for thrasher or become ads for brands. when someone does a very hard and gnarly trick in a contest it's still sick but a trick done in the streets will always have more credibility and relevancy than a trick done in a competitive environment in a perfect skatepark. contest and outside sponsors are only there so skateboarders can make a living. it's not skateboarders that buy or watch that crap but it makes people from outside the skate industry into skatebrand consumers. skateculture is not represented by any contest series or so called atheletes but in the homegrown media like magazines, videos, books and certain websites. in that sense, even a cringeworthy channel like braille is at least an active part in the culture, as much as i despise their vanilla vision of what skateboarding is. what you describe as a weird period is that right after skate 3 came out, lots of new independent brands popped up that, once again, changed the aesthetics of skateboarding and having a back to the roots approach with simpler tricks, more lines and more importance put on the spot you skate than the difficulty of the tricks. at the same time, street league picked up. so there is now even a harder divide between the athletes that skate contests and the cultural icons that refuse to do that and collect street footage instead. there is still a movement within professional skateboarding to keep skateboarding seperate from any sort of sport and commerce, some of skateboardings most popular brands artdirections are entirely about this (anti hero) while a brand like plan b is pretty much dedicated to present skateboarding as a thing that athletes do. what none of the skategames got so far is that skateboarding is one of the few athletic things to do that don't require you to be actually athletic yourself. there's plenty of burly overweight skaters that are super good, like the current thrasher skater of the year, jamie foy.
@TheFormActually
@TheFormActually 6 лет назад
Yes, you make a valid point with some issues, I agree, however, you're forgetting that skate culture isn't made up of only skaters, but fans & artists, photographers, designers as well who used to go to such events, and used to promote the event and skaters there through their work. Still happens, but not as often as before. Because there's so much of these sick skaters with their new YT channels or whatever, nobody cares anymore. That's how it usually goes in life, it's the effect of over-saturation. It has simply lost its magic. There's a fantastic documentary about Bones Brigade, and how everything started with Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen and the gang ( it's a must watch ), It's literally the beginning of the skate culture, and I'm not talking only about skating. Big tricks of course happened in the streets first, there's no doubt, but If you wanted to leave a mark, on a large group of people, those big competitive events were the place to be to become an Icon. Where people attempted some sick new trick 10 times with thousands people watching, until it really happened. Today, you can upload your YT video and there you go, that's it. Now, we can argue, that there were much better skaters than those skating icons, I would agree, but that's the thing, people who weren't exactly skaters didn't care about such street figures. Also I'm willing to bet that majority of people who played such video games weren't skaters in the first place, just a huge fan of it. It's like world cups in sports, or the Olympics...That's the place where you'll learn about special individuals in sports that you usually don't watch.

@fartinmartin5
@fartinmartin5 6 лет назад
I think you missed one main point. thps can't hold water to skate anymore, and skate wont ever get made again because EA is the publisher, and there is no clear/feasible way to make skate under their current scheme. All their sports games are centered around game modes that involve buying card packs to build ultimate teams. They can integrate micro-transactions into this making these games infinitely more profitable than any single purchase skate game with a few DLCs. It is not worth it for them to spend the time or effort, no matter the demand for a new skate game.

Skating is just less popular now. It's hard for developers to capitalize on a subculture and sport that has so many low and high periods it's hard to grasp what the market actually wants especially if you're dealing with such a minority who may want different things from a skating game. Session will be a good game but it's already pushing for the niche of being for actual skaters as well as being a sim, something that's even few and far between an actual success in the mainstream which is what sports like skateboarding have to appeal to in order to keep making games. Like in other sports, popularity is dictated by how many stars you have and we're just lacking someone or group of people to transcend the sport and appeal to everyone like Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, and Rob Dyrdek did, only then will you see more developers and publishers jump at the chance to make more skating games
@SwissDontMiss
@SwissDontMiss 6 лет назад
Skating is less popular now? Really? Skateboarding is probably more popular than it's ever been. The fact that it's evolved into such a huge thing that is enjoyed by people all over the world is quite frankly amazing. If it's good, Skate 4 would probably out-sale every single previous skateboarding game ever made
@nofxceghxst9192
@nofxceghxst9192 6 лет назад
Rhys Wyss if skateboarding was as popular as it once was from 1994 to 2004 you'd see a plethora of skate titles out right now trust me. Popularity leads to opportunity, it's the exact same reason Tony Hawk got offered a game in the first place and it's the same reason there's only one major skating game coming out now in Session
@kdollo
@kdollo 6 лет назад
I disagree, skateboarding is so over saturated nowadays it's insane. There are so many new up and coming kids and pros it's almost hard to keep track of. Social Media made things even crazier, now people are uploading full blown parts or enders onto their Instagram like it's nothing. Magazines and physical Videos aren't as popular because you can just open up your phone and see some unknown kid do some crazy shit. To say it's a minority is silly, maybe if you live in another country besides the U.S.
@nofxceghxst9192
@nofxceghxst9192 6 лет назад
Keenan Dolan there are over 340 million US citizens, how many of those people would you say are skaters? At the most maybe 10 million if that? Sounds like a minority right, that's cause it is. If skating was as truly popular now as you say it is why is there only one skate game coming out right now hm? I'll tell you why. There isn't enough guaranteed money, remember skate 3 sold pretty bad, no more than 2 million copies over it's lifespan. The last few Tony Hawks were dumpster fires and sold terribly so why keep making more it's just a money pit. Just because some dude uploads a part they filmed in 2 days on Instagram doesn't make it mainstream, in fact that very idea of conforming to the mainstream goes against the whole free flowing, expressionist mentality of skateboarding in the first place.
@kdollo
@kdollo 6 лет назад
ghostpapi ghostpapi ghostpapi lmao. Skateboarding is as popular as it ever has been, I live in California and see it first hand so in this instance It has nothing to do with popularity, it’s time and money, plus the fact that Black Box was disbanded after skate 3 was made, that’s such a lame excuse considering how many die hard fans are begging for skate 4. Why do you think they turned the servers back on almost 2 weeks ago. Why do you think that Skate 3 was the most requested game to have been brought back to the xbox one as a replayable classic? It’s funny how you say skate 3 wasn’t very popular when it’s the most purchased out of the entire trilogy. Just because the aren’t skateboarding games being made right now doesn’t mean that’s correlated with the popularity of skateboarding. I take it you USED to skate and that’s why you’re saying it “takes away from the creative and free flowing” aspect, but that’s not the case at all.

If I'm being honest, I didn't think it was that good, and at this time I was both a teen skateboarder and avid video game player. It was okay, but I had the option of playing THPS instead, which I found the much better game. I blame the controls and weak actual gameplay style of Thrasher. It was still fun to just skate around and trick, but it could have been more fun with better controls.
@dacypher22
@dacypher22 6 лет назад
YITT That surprises me that you didn't like Thrasher and you were a skater. I never really had the coordination to get good at skating, but pretty much all my friends were and they loved Thrasher. Whereas THPS was an arcade-like, fantasy skating game, Thrasher was much more grounded and realistic. Almost kind of a forerunner to Skate (albeit with worse controls). We loved that you could just try the same, realistic trick over and over on one rail or ramp and then finally you would hit it. I don't know. Maybe we were starved for a realistic skating game. I should probably go back and check it out again.

Yeah, I ate Thrasher Skate & Destroy. I breathed it. I would learn the tricks in my dreams. My disk was scratched, so I had to turn the music off or the game would freeze, but MAN, THAT SOUNDTRACK. Still one of my favorite games of all time.

Isn't skateboarding in general not as popular anymore?

I mean I skate and there is still a big community, you wouldn’t really know unless you were one

Shremeant true, it's become very niche now. It's definitely not as popular as it used to be tho cuz I rarely see it getting mainstream attention anymore. Always gives a very 2000s vibe for some reason.

Matty K yeah I understand, it’s not really mainstream. But it’s still has a thriving community, I can see how it appears dying

Is there a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 equiv on the PS4 Pro? I really crave playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 but I don't know how I can, I got rid of my PS2 YEARS ago.

Forgot about T&C Surf Designs:Wood Water Rage (1988) and Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble (1990) both were side scrollers where tricks were encouraged over obstacles. Skate or Die 2 had a halfpipe mode which was strictly impressive tricks for points

Tony hawk said it best on his interview in the nine club he said it was already a niche market and so with an already small slice to be split between another competitor such as EA skate, the already small slice wasn’t enough to make any company happy. It’s to bad though, I loved the classic thps games and skate was an amazing series. Myself like many others have always wanted a skate 4. I hope session can fill the void.
