Why SO MANY Thai People Want To Leave Thailand? 

As a Thai-American, I truly believe that the United States is a great place to make a living but Thailand is a great place to make a life.

I am Thai. I studied in Thailand and overseas. I lived and worked half of my life outside Thailand for MNCs. Now, I am planning to go back to Thailand to be with my family and find ways to contribute to the country. I guess life comes full circle for me. I can understand sentiments of these young people and respect their choices. Going to another country to grow yourself and improve life opportunities are not a bad idea. To me, Thailand is still the country I want to live in for the rest of my life and a place I always call home.

I am a Thai who lived in Japan for 5 years. Believe me, it's not what you see from outside: even if you work in the same organization as them, you will still be seen as an outsider and treated differently, especially if you are from a country deemed inferior like Thailand. Trust me, just go to Japan for tourism, don't live there long term.

Im thai and i think YOU should also interview people in rural as well and not just bangkok only because the standard of living in completely different depends on where you live.

I'm half Thai and, after spending my whole life in London, am finally moving to Thailand. It's fascinating to hear people in Bangkok speaking about how it's impossible to afford life in the capital. Exact same issue many percieve here in London. Rent is absolutely insane and owning a house is a pipe dream. On both sides, it's so easy to overlook what you already have where you are. Love to the beautiful people of both countries and both cities 🇬🇧🇹🇭

Living in Thailand is the best, if you have enough money, like the tourists from developed countries or the rich. But for the locals, it has been getting hard here. For example, in the current rice harvest season, the inflation is high, but the rice’s price is very low. It is a really hard situation for the farmers which are one of the main populations in Thailand. Low price of agricultural products is good for exporters or tourism, but the farmers may not think so.

As Thai and a former UK student, the reasons why I'm back to Thailand are because of better healthcare (I had some conditions at that time), and my family members that live here. Nonetheless, it is totally understandable why young Thai people tends to explore new oppotunities overseas.

I met a lot of Thai exchange students in Germany. They are enjoying their time here for sure, travelling around and making friends. Some even extend their stay and find work for a while or apply for a PhD program. But life here in Germany is hard. The daily life in Germany is a struggle. I can imagine that it isn't easy to cope with our daily life efficiency and customer unfriendly services. So the Thai students and scientists that I know, are always happy to go back to Thailand, because in the end they prefer life there. They say that life in Thailand is just way more chill and enjoyable. Can't speak for everyone from Thailand of course. But thats just from my experience.

You should also ask people who has been studied or worked abroad why they come back to Thailand.

I understand people who want to move countries. If you want something better because it's human nature. But for those who curse only their home country, they must try to meet other countries' society. with the same skills that you have,If you are good enough, you can live anywhere in the world and Thailand Iis one of the easiest countries in the world to live in.

I'm Thai and currently live in GC, Australia now as an employee. I love the video, it truly reflects how many Young Thais want to live in Thailand would like to move out at some point in their life. (totally related to that). One point I'd believe worth sharing is Young Thais people knew what they do. Some comments might say "Hey, you don't know how hard it is to live in Western or developed country.", trust me they've reached in a harder position while living in motherland. 6 years ago after my graduation, my salary starts at 15kTHB per month, noodle is 40THB per bowl. I speak 3 languages fluently(Thai, English, Mandarin), graduated from international uni, a ton of activities profile, plus proven sales record(I did side hustle). Later I got the job in one of the biggest company in Thailand, making 7 figures for company annually, work from 8am to sometimes 12pm at night no weekends life, 5 years straight. As a result, my salary increases only 2-3% annually with small bonus and "Thank you" as a reward at year end party. Oh and btw noodle now is 50THB up with smaller portion. (In grab it is 70-100 THB upwards) People complain about living abroad because of tax, inflation and rental. I totally get that. But would you agree that earning more allow you to have a room to save and invest more rather than earn less every single year because of inflation and no chance to earn more because of social structure? Some people I knew earns 15k -25k THB per month with 5-10 years of experience in a middle to high skill job. Look, I'm not fantasize living in Australia or Western country. The food here is expensive and not taste as good as in Thailand. Discrimination and racism still happens. Healthcare system can't be compare to Thailand. Reparing things is damn expensive here. And so much more. The question is " What choice do Young Thai have?" If you are foreigner living in Thailand or you are Thai living aboard and want to move back, surely you'd love it. You have money or you have a business or job that allows you to earn more. But What if you don't? Will you still consider living in Thailand in long-term? Sorry for long ranting, but I just don't understand Thai or foreigner people who said that Young Thais don't understand the value of what we have in home country. Of course, they knew but what choice do they have? Many people still commeting here while living aboard, come on guys.

You might get the same response if you interviewed people in London and New York. Or Sydney. Largest cities in a country often have disproportionately high costs of living that are really hard on young people. Also, the woman who said she wanted to go to Denmark might be in for a shock if she ever goes, as it's a *really* expensive country.

Good to hear Thai's voices, seems like the situation is the same all over the world! There's so many strikes in the UK over pay at the moment. Another good job done, Paddy 🙏

Singaporean here. There’s much to admire about Thai people, culture, history and the beauty of their land. The reasons for the educated young wanting to leave Thailand is valid and real. It doesn’t necessarily mean forsaking Thailand but bringing back knowledge to help improve the economy and people’s lives years later. One cannot expect ideologies outside of Thailand to be imposed like a mold. Afterall Thailand has a long, rich and deep history and culture on its own since it was not colonised by the West like its neighbouring countries. Thailand needs a Thai who deeply appreciates and understands the Thai uniqueness, combined with knowledge of foreign ideologies, skill and resilience to introduce applicable bits to bring the country to the next level. Of course all this is easier said than done. I wish Thai people all the very best. Don’t lose yourself in the midst of influence from foreign ideologies. Please continue to love your country and your people.

I wanted to go aboard when I finished my Uni. It wasn’t because I didn’t like Thailand, I just wanted to explore the world. 20 years on I’m now in my 40s and realise that.. I have to go home. I have learned the world and made comparison then it comes to my mind that oversea is not for me. It doesn’t suit my way of life I prefer. I am happy to say I am now going home for good. If any young ones want to have experience outside the country you should ! If you don’t try you don’t know. Just one thing don’t say you hate Thailand too soon you might regret it.

Great video. The young lady that said sometimes Thai people can be “ruthless” to each other, I couldn’t agree more. Living in a small village for several years now, I often see that side of “The Land of Smiles”. Your video is a good reminder that even “good jobs” here don’t pay all that much compared to cost of living, etc.

I’m from the UK and recently returned from Thailand. I miss it already. Beautiful country, beautiful food and beautiful people. I would move there tomorrow

As an American (born and raised), the issue of wages to the constant rise of cost of living is also a problem here, and I live in one of the more affordable states. If you couple that with the idea that you need higher education to get ahead and get paid more (in many professions, you actually don't. Proper training and certification is generally enough.) with the absurd cost of higher education you end up stuck in your current situation, which is a problem for many Americans. So the grass isn't always greener on the other side, even if it appears so. But in terms of going to another country to gain professional and/or life experience, I think that's a good idea for anyone regardless of where you're from if you're able to make that happen.

For those who never live outside Thailand or often travel abroad , undoubtly want to try new life oversea. They will finally wish to go back after having some experiences there.

I am Thai working as expat in the oversea in many countries but i prefer to stay in Thailand.

Asking undergraduate students about jobs and wage is naive. They dont have experience and all they know is 300 baht a day(9000 baht a month) repeatitively in circle. In real professional career life, when they got 5-15 year experience , they can earn up to 50,000-200,000 baht easily and they can live well-luxurious life with that. Many people I know earn 70,000-200,000 when they are 33-38 year old.

I worked in Thailand before moving to Germany due Marriage. I though living abroad would be offer me more opportunities to grow up. After moving here, I wasting my time for 3 years investing on language skill, and throw over 100 time my resume to get a jobs. But Tax is high, bills is getting higher. Inflation makes life harder. I miss life in Thailand. My daily life is just to work and sleep. By the way. I still encourage new gen to go abroad to get their eyesight wider. At the end, I will spend the rest of my life in Thailand.

I was born in Thailand but came to the U.S. in the 80’s and then came back here again in the 90’s when I was 17. I’ve lived in the U.S. all my life, and I’ve always wanted to go visit Thailand again. Love the country! I think Thailand is not bad but could be better.

I feel for young Thai people. Hope and pray for something to happen for the good of Thai people and the country. I left Thailand for US when I was 22 years old. I am retiring and planning to return to Thailand next year. I am planning to use what I have ( knowledge, experience, money ect. ) to help my country during the last chapter of my life.

Another major issue (one of which made me decide to leave Thailand) that no one in the video talks about is the environmental issue such as the pollution issue (PM2.5) that has persisted for far too long.

I am Thai and I live in Australia. In my opinion, Thailand is better to live if you earn enough income. But the majority of Thai citizen aren't earn enough to make a good fortune. Compare to where I live in Australia the minimum wages for the commoner is fair. We can afford whatever we need if we learn how to save but not for the wages in Thailand especially if you just graduate and start working in Bangkok. It really hard to make the good fortune. Good luck to everyone who want to go overseas. No pain no gain always true. :)

Many often see things either through rose-colored glasses or jaded-glasses. Living/working abroad for many is special and an eye-opening experience. I feel grateful that I had those opportunities. It's always nice to be surrounded by family and friends especially as you grow older. For most of us life is not easy and is usually very challenging. It's those challenges that makes us who we are and how we deal with the setbacks.

This content is just next level. Thanks for the good work.

I (Australian) tried working in Bangkok and hated it for a number of reasons but saw that life was much harder for the Thais than me. I changed to a longer visa that permitted me to work online and live in Bangkok. I love living here, for the experiences and quality of life. I have found that Thai culture is unique and beautiful but it is impervious to a farrung couple.

While a ton of foreigners wish to live in Thailand for the lifestyle their earnings allow there, thais wishing to leave Thailand seems to me like searching for more opportunites to make more money and get experiences. Nothing wrong with that, but the cost of living in the west may reveal that inflation and higher living costs eats up a lot of the difference. All ok, another factor to consider is loneliness and isolation. An acquaintance of mine was married to a Thai woman and she could not wait to leave Denmark for the 3 months every year she'd go to Thailand to be with the family, deeming life in Denmark extremely boring as nothing really happens in the evening on weekdays. My theory is that Thais generally will be most happy in Thailand if they didn't have to struggle to make ends meet.

Thais’ are always asking me about how much foreigners make in their own country. But they never think about how much the rent, food and many other bills would be in America and Europe.

I am from Indonesian and working at Thailand. I can feel Thai people. This is the same reason why I seek working overseas. People who have the opportunity to work overseas should take the chance. Don't worry about other people. You should do what's your heart tell you to do. If you think working overseas is not the right choice for you, you can always comes back to your homeland.

There have always been Thais who want to work abroad but typically they are only thinking about the money and have little or no idea what life would be like. Like many expats here, Thais tend to group together when living overseas, in my experience, especially those who are only there to study or work in places like Thai restaurants. That said, I have always said I feel lucky and privileged being a Farang in Thailand and would not want to be Thai. As a foreigner who speaks Thai I have had great freedom and opportunity and my life is lived outside the restrictions of normal Thai society. It can be hard for Thais to be socially mobile or advance in this class structured society.

Amazing video Paddy as always. I didn’t expect so many of them to move to another country if they had the chance. I wonder how many foreigners like Thailand mainly because it‘s a pretty cheap holiday destination. This all changes when living there and having to deal with the same problems Thai people have to deal with when working for a low salary. Personally I think Thailand has so much more to offer than just low prices.

When I was younger I wanted to leave Thailand for better life. Then I had that opportunity to live and making money in the US. But I always miss my familly in Thailand. The older I get the more I desire to move back to spend simple basic life with them. Yes! Im planning to move back home.

Great job as always Paddy. It is so true to that it is almost impossible to establish yourself in Thailand from nothing. Though it may seem hard in other countries as well, there are still more chances than in Thailand. I don't blame these young people for wanting to leave but living overseas may not be the answer for everyone. I wish they could travel the world and find the answer for themselves which place works best for them.

I Foreign who living in Thailand since 5 Years.... I would never change the coutry again, when i hear from my friends how high the Prices going to live in Europe, US, UK, or. Australia, so I Happy to live here, even with not a lot Money... but Happy and easy...

Great video. It is an exciting time for Thailand and young people are increasingly keen to engage with the outside world and learn english.

It depends on each person's situation. For me, I want to visit other countries if I have time and money as the reward for life after hard working. By the way, I still want to live in Thailand and haven't planed for resettling or working oversea, but I will not refuse if I have a chance to work there since it will be a great experience. However, as I love reading historical textbooks, I learn about many counries and find that there can be an innident which drives people getting out from their countries, so, I prepare myself such as enhancing my language, my working skills in the case that such incident will happen too, so I can live and work oversea.

As a Thai who once was working abroad, I may answer your question most Thai ppl have in mind about leaving the country and work in other countries for a while. What they expect is to wider their experiences in career building and more money for their future and families. When their plans are fulfilled, most of them will move back to their country later in life for they are the kind of close tie family relation and deep country attachment.

As a native Thai born and bred who just acquired Australian citizenship (a week ago), have been living in Oz for 6 years, there are many challenges when migrating - new environment, new culture, new languages, new people, etc. Considering Thai people that currently in “middle class” (e.g. studying/obtained Bachelor, average family income around 900k to 1m per annum, living with parents who own a house and a car/2 cars - something similar to the people in the video), these people will need to take much more effort to adjust to the life overseas as everything totally different in terms of lifestyle (clean your own house, cooking your own, do a house maintenance on your own, etc.) Anyway, the pros of living here is that the society and industry tend to be open - they value on your actual skills, while in Thailand, they value on many things such as a degree from prestigious university, connections, and many other stuff. Another benefit, obviously, money! In detail, the gap of income and wages are not that much, and it seems to be equally (e.g. with minimum wages, you can live with basic needed and bare minimum here and also have some remaining for saving. For people who prefer luxury lifestyle, they will need to looking for higher salary but that not necessary, it just about individual lifestyle), while in Thailand, as you know, 300 baht per day….hmm….all Thai people acknowledge together that with this amount, we cannot see any future. The wages in Thailand needs to be adjusted to be relevant to the living costs.

In Sg, things are also getting very expensive. Most Asia countries are feeling the heat too.

As am Thai and living overseas they don’t know that how lucky they was to living in Thailand as Thai living in overseas it harder than they think

One of the reasons is political war between Thais. One side has tried to convince new gens how bad their contry is, the other side has tried hard to defend it and lived the life happily. I used to think the same way they do now as i never realized how good my country was. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
