His cardio’s decent and his cardio for the fight scene is a bit below average. Like Firas said, it’s high twitch muscle fibers. When you have guys that have that, they can only explode for so long and that’s why Conor snipes a lot and uses his karate style of bouncing back and forth to strike. It’s kinda like Woodley. Woodley back in the Strikeforce days and early on in his UFC career would only shoot takedowns when he was slowing down and needed a breather with how much energy he was exerting. Conor does the same, but instead of takedowns he’ll either use kicks or forward pressure when he knows an opponent is intimidated to follow up and land finishing shots. If anyone pressures Conor or makes him fight a fight he doesn’t want, then that’s when his cardio cracks.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. The dude is no doubt far more educated than most, myself included, in terms of body mechanics, fighting technique, strength and conditioning. Much of what he is saying in terms of muscle composition is more speculative than verifiable though. It's kind of like the prevailing 'body type' theories that were debunked years ago, but persist as a fake gold standard for many of the old guard in the health and science industry. It's more appropriate to say he is educated in what he is talking about, which is very different than knowing.

I think fast twitch fibers or explosive abilities is definitely genetics, but slow twitch endurance any body can develop it. Its just that many fast twitch people are impatience and wants to get done with everything fast and then they get tired and gas out. But being able to go long distance and controlled you need to vary your levels intensity into percentage zones, this will then eventually train your heart (the actual cardio endurance part) and or theres also muscular endurance too like ability to hold a static hold position, maybe even with a heavy load, examples are like a plank or wall sit. Again you can develop steady and paced endurance even if you are a fast twitch type by proper training, but from my experience those ive witness with slow twitch fibers are never going to be explosive ever haha. What usually accompanies them is low body coordination as well haha

You can actually train your muscles in such a way that they become more aerobically or anaerobically capable. There are also muscle fibers (fast oxidative-glycolytic) that are more 'Jack of all tradesy' muscle fibers. Genetics do matter but that doesn't mean you can't train yourself to be the best you can be at whenever type of sport you want to train yourself to be the best at. Conor may have a genetic endowment to be more anaerobically capable but you can still train your muscles to be aerobically great. It's not a completely genetic formula. Be the best athlete you wanna be boys! Cheeky edit: At the top level, of course genetics matter a lot. When I first saw the comments I saw a lot of people saying something along the lines of "I guess I'm screwed, I just gotta face the facts", and if you're looking to go to the top level, sorry but yeah you kinda are lol. That being said! For everyday people like me, you don't need to worry about genetics when it comes to staying fit in a way you will have fun with. Muscles change with how you train them, so if you say to yourself "hmm, I wouldn't mind trying an amateur MMA fight one day", then you can train and your muscles will adapt to your training! But yeah, of course, you can't change your height, and you can't change your genetics. If you're just trying to have fun with a sport as a hobby, don't let genetics stop you.
@rdujzafir
@rdujzafir 6 месяцев назад
Yeah and there is also the factor of leverage and where your muscle connects to bone, and the density of fibers. I have a friend that is very strong at 160ish lbs and when he got his dna test it actually highlighted his high probability of strength, interesting stuff
@notsoberoveranalyzer8264

This makes to me. I always figured giant muscle bound dudes always seem to punch in slow motion because heavy weight lifting trends your body to move more slowly. That combined with the size, weight and loss of flex ability too.
@StyMusic_and_MMA
@StyMusic_and_MMA 6 месяцев назад
@@notsoberoveranalyzer8264 When you see big muscly guys like Bob Sapp back when he was juiced to the gills, he throws punches decently fast and with the ferocity of a thousand lions. However he normally gasses out in the first round too. He had definitely trained his body more for explosive movement and not for endurance. The energy pathways for explosive moments tend to deplete within three minutes of exercise, and aerobic pathways that are more endurant can last for much much longer. Sure, you sacrifice some of that punching power for cardio but it's probably pretty worth it lol, but if I were him I would have done a lot more aerobic training
@zacharyarmendariz1033
@zacharyarmendariz1033 6 месяцев назад
@@notsoberoveranalyzer8264 fliexibility is more of a consequence of your tendons than your muscles. There are many body builders that are extremely flexible because they actively stretch in their workout routines. Size and inertia are the biggest factors to why heavy weights are so much slower than straw weights. I think speed vs. endurance is more a product of muscle fiber geometry than muscle fiber type. Some workouts produce more fiber density while others increase fiber size. The point remains, every persons fitness journey is more a 'choose your own adventure' than it is genetic. Of course genetics and hormones are going to play an important role when you are an athlete in the 99th percentile.

I don't know if I agree with this stuff. Tyson was extremely big and twitchy and could go 12. Manny was the same. Ali was insanely explosive and could go 12. His own fighter GSP. Silva, Mighty Mouse, and more. I think, it's more of Conors lifestyle. He went 5 with Max, without issue. Earlier his cardio wasn't a problem. The heavier you get, the older you get, the more you party, the more you drink, and the less time you spend in the gym, the more your cardio leaves you. I also think Conor was getting matched up with a lot of strikers early in his career at smaller weights. He moved up and fought bigger guys who would lean on him, guys who would wrestle and grapple with him, and that was an element he wasn't used to a lot. You start using muscles you don't normally use and you get much more tired at a faster rate.

@mr.doctorcaptain1124

I think that’s only part of it. Another aspect to it is how the muscle fibers connect to the bone, basically where your ligaments attach. Guys who have longer attachment points tend to be able to develop that SNAP to their strikes much better than guys with shorter connection points. But I also think a huge aspect of it that never gets talked about is if fighters throw with the elastic principle or not. Watch the hard hitters, Wilder, McGregor, Davis, etc. they all throw with the elastic principle. That is to say, the body moves first, then the strike follows. When the body moves first, it pulls the ligaments taught like a rubber band, then when the fighter allows the strike to follow the body it releases that built up energy and the strike comes MUCH harder. Something I’ve noticed about guys with great cardio, they don’t throw that way. They throw the strike with the blunt part first. So on a punch they’ll just throw their arm out there and let the body then press the strike into the opponent. It doesn’t hit as hard, but it still hurts like hell. Guys who throw like that (max Holloway, Colby Covington) tend to have great gas tanks, but they’re not knocking anyone out in one punch. They’ll wear you down then in the later rounds you just cannot keep getting hit like that, and that’s how they KO guys.

Every fighter has both types of muscle fibers. Every human has BOTH. You use both in different ways. Genetics just determine how much of them we have. Some people have more fast twitch than others. Some have more slow twitch fibers. And it's not going to determine who lasts longer in the ring. I see this guy everywhere and he tries to talk like he's an authority on this. He is not a scientist. Cardio is not genetic. On the extremes as in if you want to WIN a marathon then yes. But to merely complete a marathon, that’s something anyone can do with proper training. Fighters can either prioritize muscle and power or they can prioritize cardio, fighters like Conor or ngannou prioritize power which is why their cardio is not good. A lot of people don’t actually like to do cardio in the first place as it can reduce muscle.
@zacharyarmendariz1033
@zacharyarmendariz1033 6 месяцев назад
True, but I don't think that is what is going on here. Connor very likely has phenomenal cardio. It's not a lack of conditioning, but more a product of his fighting style. If you tried to run a marathon, but you came out the gate sprinting like it was a 100 meter dash you are going to gas out. In Connor's prime he was one of the most dynamic fighters ever seen. His wide and incredibly bouncy karate stance along with his combinations of spinning kicks and lightning fast strikes are what made him special. You can't fight with that intensity and have an endless gas tank, it doesn't matter if you are drilling 5 round fights in practice. That's why we saw him come back in a rematch against Nate Diaz and completely outclass him for 5 rounds. The fights were 5 months apart and I can assure you he didn't make any significant strides in his conditioning. He just made the necessary adjustments to his pace.
@filazkeita2272
@filazkeita2272 6 месяцев назад
They "prioritize" nothing, they are elite fighters, do you really think they would not try their best to optimize every areas they could? Conor is knows for doing a lot of biking, but the stamina required for biking/running and the stamina required for fighting arent the same, atleast not really. You said it yourself, to win a marathon you need to have naturally more stamina than average, the same goes for the mma fighters that we see, they all trains like crazy so if you arent born with a said advantage you cant catch up the fighter born with it even if you train 24/7
@purplevincent4454
@purplevincent4454 6 месяцев назад
@@filazkeita2272 a marathon is 26 miles, to do so you need to prioritize cardio, many fighters simply do not prioritize cardio and that's their call to make. any fighter can have a better gas tank but it would require sacrificing their muscles and power, i don't understand how you can disagree with this it's simply a FACT of science and human physiology. If conor or any other fighter truly wanted to improve their cardio they would lean themselves out and prioritize cardio, now again that is their call to make they may not want to do that for very valid reasons. it's not "genetic" but if you are going to carry around more muscle and power do not expect to be a cardio machine, this is why nate diaz was not but was a high cardio athlete same with colby covington. also note that if anyone says things about fast twitch vs slow twitch muscle, just know that though the composition throughout the body differ as a baseline, research studies show that endurance training switches your body over to slow twitch and hiit and explosive training switches your muscles to fast twitch, just search it up.
@purplevincent4454

@@zacharyarmendariz1033 if you take a look at someone like colby covington you'll see what i am saying. if colby wanted to become more of a power puncher he could, he chooses to be a high volume, high pressure athlete with a lot of cardio.
@zacharyarmendariz1033
@zacharyarmendariz1033 6 месяцев назад
@@purplevincent4454 that is exactly my point though. Colby himself has stated that he almost never throws a punch at 100%. He weaponizes pace with his exceptional conditioning, but he is also smart about how he fights to conserve his energy and focus on volume and constant pressure (which is exhausting on the opponent). No doubt a fighter's training regiment is going to impact their endurance, explosiveness, etc. The point is that: how they choose to fight from the opening bell is also a significant factor. A good example would be comparing Gaethje vs. Ferguson to Gaethje vs. Oliveira. Same fighter, completely different approach. He was loading so much into those shots against Oliveira there is no way that fight was going 5 rounds (hell he looked exhausted in the 1), but Gaethje has proven that his conditioning is world class.
