The problem is Sonic's enemies are too weak, not him being too strong. Yes he has a flat character arc but it doesn't mean he's uninteresting. Sonic is suppose to be a character one would look up to. He inspires change around and sets examples for others.
Everything before 2010 was gold especially the adventure games and he has a good character ark though maybe it's because he's at his peak and it's others that need those kind of good arks
Sure, but it doesn't excuse the fact that he has plot armor and seems to breeze through every story now with no struggle. Even paragon characters need to be challenged, whether physically (like facing a strong opponent), in ideology, or mentally/emotionally, otherwise it's boring. Lost World tried to do this, but the execution was terrible because the story kept going for a lighthearted tone which undercut serious moments (along with the crap dialogue) Merlina in SATB is an example of something I wish they did more of. She wasn't just another bad guy for Sonic to tear through. She had her own understandable reasons for why she did what she did, even if the methods were terrible. And through that ,we got to explore WHY Sonic thinks the way he does and his values, which are contrasted with Merlina's. We get to see Sonic be challenged by Merlina in his ideals and struggle.
@@infinitedreamer9359 Yeah, I agree. I'm not talking about how he is in the 2010 games because there those stories sucks and the bad guys are just too easier. I WAS referring to the 2000s and yes Sonic has been through struggles. Even in Secret Rings(Flame of Judgement) and Sonic Unleashed(Sonic the Werehog).
@@BJSolar02 I kind of agree and don't. In Unleashed, you're half right as i the beginning he does flat out lose to Eggman in Super form,BUT as far as the Werehog form goes, there's no struggle there. He gets used to the form's powers pretty fast and the only time we see him emotionally vulnerable is when Amy runs away from him,but it's not brought up again for rest of the game. The conflict that the Werehog could've had for Sonic is wasted IMO. Secret Rings is just another example of a villain for Sonic to tear through. He the generic bad guy and while Sonic does have his life at risk for the game,Sonic never,so it's just another example of showing Sonic as invincible and nothing getting to him.
This is what I like to call: Character Pampering. Character Pampering is when a company puts other characters down to make their protagonist look better in comparison. That’s why I think Sega is what Dr. Starline thought of Eggman’s conflict with Sonic.
I don't think Sonic needs to be weaker, but his friends and enemies must be stronger and more useful. It worked in SA2 because Sonic wasn't able to fix all problems by speed alone, and his enemies could match his speed.
The thing is, his friends and enemies ARE plenty strong. But Sonic just kinda wins anyway without much more thought than "go fast and get emeralds" He HAS established weaknesses, both physically and emotionally, but they just never get utilized in an interesting fashion that often. The Sonic Storybook games are the most cohesive character study for him when it comes to the games. He's portrayed as skillful, but in over his head without the support of those around him. And he KNOWS how in over his head he is. But his refusal to back down regardless is what motivates the people around him to show that same bravery, and support him when he needs it. Black Knight is not the best game in the series, but it tells the single-best story focusing on Sonic as a person rather than Sonic as a fighter.
Spot on. To suggest that Sonic's powers need to be nerfed is a ludicrous and frankly stupid idea. It's not Sonic's fault that being able to move, think, fight etc. at the speed of light is leagues more overpowered than many fiction writers and readers may think. And I don't think his enemies need to be made more powerful either. As if the likes of Perfect Chaos, Solaris (yes I went to '06; there is no problem), Dark Gaia, and super artificial intelligence aren't powerful enough. To give his friends more power and responsibility, on the other hand, yes, we should go back to that and not just have them around as fodder, if you will.
I don't have a problem with Sonic being sassy, faster than almost everyone when he decides to really gun it, or having infinite stamina. But as someone whose experience with Sonic as a kid was almost exclusively the SatAM cartoon, I miss the Sonic that was impatient, cocky, and yeah, kind of insensitive and full of himself who was street smart but not a strategist or academically smart. He had a good heart, but he was egotistical and impulsive, too. Heck, I think SatAM even hinted that he has PTSD in at least one episode. And it's not like super speed can't be countered. I'm not a DC fan, but I'm sure Flash's enemies manage to find ways around his superpower. Make Sonic a complex character again, please, and stop treating him like his super speed makes him a fluffing god.
That's what gets me, Flash is one of the most broken characters in all of fiction but his enemies can still find ways to negate that. Same with Superman. Sonic needs to have an enemy that really challenges him, whether it be through planning or raw power.
Sonic the comic actually did this best. Sonic was generally portrayed as the most powerful individual in almost every situation, but that in and of itself never addressed the problem that was Robotnik literally ruling the world, since sonic can only be in one place at a time no matter how fast he was. The series also took the trouble to have sonic overcome by stronger or better optimized foes multiple times, either forcing him to adapt (which he could quite well, given his background as an on and off lab assistant) or to bring out Fleetway Supersonic, with all the problems that created.
Not surprising he would have PTSD, considering the type of environment he was living in for that series. There was one episode where Sonic probably wished he was a little bit faster to save one of his friends.
I think the IDW Comics showcase a much more vunerable but still strong Sonic. He's not invincibile, he's still strong but he depends and relies on his friends to help him.
It also showcases a Sonic that is ultra preachy, who contradicts the games by willing to let Metal Sonic go free to "give him a chance to be free", then later gets mad at Metal for going back to Eggman. Oh, and he lets Eggman go in these comics after beating him, because he wants the doctor to turn good because of the Mr. Tinker situation. Game Sonic has no such delusions about Eggman and does not care if the doctor lives or dies. IDW Sonic gaslights Shadow to win an argument, using his pain and suffering against him like Black Doom did; "If Eggman can't be forgiven, can you?" Little blue POS. Game Sonic isn't that callous or stupid. IDW Sonic also has never apologized for the screwups he's done in this comic. He deflects blame when people call him out on it. Even in _Sonic Lost World,_ he acknowledged that he did something stupid and is trying to make things right. He also apologizes to Tails for doubting him.
@SonicStar917 Homie would rather have a bland Sonic than a flawed Sonic Look man, IDW Sonic had had like 65-odd comics, some of which aren't even focused on Sonic to give the other characters a chance to develop You can't expect Sonic to develop in that little time, and if he did he'd just become the same old boring character from the games Archie Sonic didn't develop in that amount of time, I don't think Fleetway ever matured Just give the fella some time, he'll come around eventually
That scene in Sonic Boom with Knux and Sonic where Sonic says "we" reminds me so much of the scene in Sonic Heroes at the end of the Team Sonic story. Knuckles was all like "If we didnt help you then you wouldnt have stood a chance" and Sonic was like "Yeah you're right thanks Knuckles!" And he was genuinely surprised. I miss moments like that
p.s:I KNOW GOKU IS A SAYIAN...I meant to say "he looks human" Literal timing lol! BUT It still stands....until the game comes out. Sonic Froniters could still just have sonic beat everything with ease and do everything by himself again. and still Sonics friends are useless
People forgot that in Forces' trailer, Infinite was hyped up as a villain that could finally present a challenge to Sonic... We know how that eventually turn out
During an online meet and greet, Shiro Maekawa, the writer of Sonic games from 2001-2009, said that he portrayed Sonic as a god to some extent, especially in a way that he is smart, versatile, and almost omnipotent to see through any truth behind things.
Sonic's undernoticed weakness is that while he has super speed, he doesn't have inhumanly fast reflex. That means if you can predict his movements, you can ambush him. This can be combined with Sonic's impulsivity and doing faster than thinking.
That's practicaly what Eggman did at the start of Unleashed or even SA2: Give Sonic the satisfaction that he won, only to pull an UNO reverse card on his face and lure him into a trap.
I do think he has good reaction speeds and reflex, but it's his habit of getting distracted that gets him caught. He let's his enemies finish talking before engaging in battle, and he quite the observant fellow. I know a video exploring that.
Even using his friends against him in key moments helps distract him. Throw multiple problems that force him to think, but by the time he's thought of a solution, he's left open for a sucker punch. Granted he cares enough to be careful with saving his friends, looking at you Sonic Riders, throwing Amy in that tornado like that. (Tbh that mistake brought such a hilarious moment so it gets a pass)
No need to weakened Sonic for the sake of making his friends stand out when they just need to be buffed. Sonic's supposed to be this seemingly unstoppable cool badass with his speed while his cocky attitude lightens the mood. The problem is not Sonic but how he's used when around his friends. Since after 06, Sega keeps downplaying their purposes when they're around Sonic fearing that their unique abilities with being seemingly as fast as Sonic will make the blue blur irrelevant in his own series. So they just focus purely on Sonic being the only true fast one while doing everything despite his friends being perfectly available to share the spotlight in the main action. They've been doing the Sonic solo stuff wrong in games like Colors & Forces simply cause Sonic's around his friends that aren't allowed to do anything nearly important as him. The Sonic solo stuff works better in games like Sonic 1, CD, & Secret Rings simply cause Sonic's actually not around his friends so he's supposed to shine on his own.
We need to be able to play as them again in the main series much like we could during the Adventure Era. The games got a lot more out of them from being able to play as the characters other than Just Sonic.
@@gioclayton6634 It's because people only play Sonic games for High speed gameplay. People hated the treasure hunting and Mech sections in SA 2, so that gave Sega a reason to just focus on Sonic. However now Sega doesn't know what to do with Sonic's friends other than fan service. Multiple characters work well in 2d, but Sonic Team doesn't balance it well in 3d.
As someone pointed out, at least Sonic showed weakness in the new Frontiers trailer. 😅 Though another thing to point out is that Sonic Forces basically made Sonic a Saiyan. Now he “gets stronger by the second”. Now that alone wouldn’t be so bad; as it explains why Silver lost to Infinite, yet Sonic “won” against him. But as you said, its clear that Sonics’ friends are set on the side line in almost every game in the 2010’s, are are not allowed to grow themselves. It’s basically the issue many fans have with Dragonball nowadays (before the new movie came out, but even then there’s some problems)
Sonic 06's ending handled Sonic's friends a bit better imo, since in the end of the world stages, they all pitch in to find the chaos emeralds. But at the same time, they were fighting to save sonic and have him defeat the enemy. Granted with the help of Shadow and silver.
i love sonic unleashed cause this was the last sonic game released when i started watching gameplays and i was in love with it, say what you want but for me this was the last game that made good choices in writing: sonic has a subtle arc (he starts hating the werehog but at the end he´s ok with himself (but its soooo subtle that you blink, you miss) and i believe that he is the kind of character that acts as a device for others to improve like chip in this game, the other good choice was if a character has no purpose WHY IS HE HERE?? Knuckles dont apear and honestly, if he appeared what would he do? Play Pokemon in his gameboy? i like to believe he was actually doing his job (Tails is a lil bad in unleashed cause he is capable but they keep treating him like a coward little lost child) and Amy is ok, she isn´t acting like a maniac and i can believe she´s a young girl who is found of sonic (still miss when she had relevance to the game, but at least she´s not bad here)
Not JUST this, but Eggman actually won, think about it, a villain can only lose so many times before they become a joke, and Eggman right at the start of Unleashed, tricks Sonic and drains the emeralds of their power, it’s part of why Unleashed has such a great opening, and it should have been how Forces started as well, it makes the game more satisfying as you kick Eggman’s forces for a little bit of vengeance on the side for losing, and it reminds players that Eggman is legit an actually threat and not just “Baldy Mc. Nosehair”
@@henrycervantes249 The opening cutscene to Sonic unleash and the ova movie really left me with a deep seeded fear of Eggman when he's so competent he wins against Sonic. It's terrifying the kinds of damage he can cause when Sonic is too hindered to stop him. We need more of that back. Villains that can subvert expectations of both audience and Sonic realistically, actually taking notice of weak points of his and his friends to achieve their goals.
Tails would've stood no chance against the Titan 5X taller and more tougher than him, even as the Werehog there is not much damage you could inflict on him and that creature would find a way to kill Tails, he's stupid strong and merciless with that gnarly Club.
Okay, I feel like some things about this needs to be addressed. While on the topic of Dragon Ball, while I do see your point, but Goku has never really "grown" as a character (if we're on the topic of Z Goku in comparison to Super that is) he has always stayed the same throughout the series, Goku and Sonic are both flat characters, they don't need any sort of development or changes because they're already find the way they are. In terms of power, lately in Dragon Ball, either Goku or Vegeta fight the big bad guy while their friends handles the small fries. So rather than making the main character weaker, I think the better solution is to make everyone else a bit stronger.
Goku doesn't change a ton but he has definitely grown in some ways like being less naive and less innocent compared to his child self. Plus coming to accept his saiyan blood. I don't think child Goku or Goku at the start of the saiyan saga would shout for Gohan to immediately finish off Cell.
@@FailedUltimatelifeForm7-10 From what I've seen from the manga, Goku's characterization doesn't seem all that different from the anime. At least in the more recent arcs.
I remember back in my day when Sonic's friends weren't background characters... *sigh* -Nah but for real, I became a fan at such a young age because I liked how unique all his friends were. Those were the days...-
When the Meta era happened, that was pretty much the time Sonic mainly became a solo act and started to become overconfident. Not only that, it pretty much made all of Sonic's friends useless like in the final boss on Generations or Forces where he was gone for like 6 months.
yep, feeling like i'm going in the right direction with my sa1 fan rewrite (so far what i wrote was till cassinopolis and Sonic almost lost and needed a helping hand once and actually lost afterwards, both time against chaos, due to his cockyness and hasty actions). honestly, so much of what ppl ask of sonic story seems to be getting adressed there, which gives me hope that it might be worth sharing online and listen to criticism.
Half of the problem is Sonic’s ridiculous plot armor. The other half is the supporting cast is nerfed to an insulting degree. P.S. I think it’s cool that you can point out the actual positives of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
Everything you say is true, but I think Frontiers is gonna change that. In the latest trailer, Sage seems to imply that Sonic's actions (maybe related to whatever happens in CyberSpace) endanger the world. But he still probably needs to do these actions in order to save his friends or something like that, and it'll probably really make him doubt himself. Thus far the path has been clear most of the time : Run fast and beat the bad guys. However, here it seems that he's the bad guy from Sage's perspective. So he has to make choice. Listen to Sage so he stops endangering the world by his actions, or save his friends. Quite the dilemma. He probably won't know what he has to do. Running fast won't solve everything this time.
If it's really the case, then it's a step towards the right direction. They have to make side characters relevant next. Cuz they're still as useless as ever and waiting to be saved by Sonic in Frontiers
While you were mostly right, they really didn't make it seem like any kind of dilemma beyond Sonic's own corruption. Sage could have saved a lot of trouble if she actually communicated to Sonic what kind of endangering he was doing, especially based on just how scary The End was supposedly meant to be.
Yeah but Sage was created by Eggman. Despite her knowledge, I bet that Eggman kept rambling in front of her about how awful Sonic was, so when she met him, she was full of prejudice towards him and, following Eggman's way, acted really stubborn and didn't try helping him at all. Or at least that's how I see it.
@@Oceane1803 With him explicitly denying the option of letting Sonic help him out of Cyberspace, I think you're probably mostly right. Though he does make the point that while he hates Sonic, he does respect him. So it possibly wasn't just hate. Personally I really dislike the trope of conflict due to a refusal to communicate, but at least it makes some sense from Sage.
Yeah Game Sonic's character wasn't like that from the start. He is suppose to be a character to raise up people spirits and focus on the future. That isn't a bad trait and Boom, IDW and Paramount got his character wrong.
Modern Sonic is objectively better and you're praising a guy who got hit by a laser from a Death Egg Robot because he got exhausted from running and also became unconsious for hours just from a bomb.
I agree, Sonic shouldn't be all knowing and all doing character. He should be strong, but his friends to be strong too. Also Sonic should joke less, he should make jokes but not as much as he does today. (Basically have black knight Sonic, instead of meta Sonic)
Sonic Prime made me realise sonic had a weakness all along, but we never noticed it because sega never put sonic in a situation where he had to face it. Sonic's weakness is his friends. Sonic goes on about friendship, working together, teamwork and helping one another; even going so far in the comics as trying to help everyone to a fault he will end up harming himself to try and help them. Sonic needs his friends as much, if not; more than they need him. So when you take sonic's friends away, sonic is vunerable, weak, alone, even scared. He no longer has people cheering him on; nobody to try and make smile, without all of them he is weaker than every other character. Because his friends represent his hope, and joy. It's like trying to be cool with nobody around, even if you are cool; what's the point is there's nobody around to tell you? Not just sonic can benefit from this but everyone else too; when they're alone missing what their life goal is (like knuckles without any way to protect the master emerald or rogue without anything to own) it shows us what they're truly like. You don't need to be dark, but at least let them be a bit vulnerable so we can see more of them.
This is why I love the Sonic the Hedgehog movies! Especially the second one! They have Sonic go through this character arc where learns to be more responsible with his powers and not always be reckless and cocky all the time. Not only Sonic, but they also fixed Tails by having him get things done and doing the right thing without always needing the help of Sonic. And then there's Knuckles and Eggman, two characters that were actually threatening antagonists in the movie instead of being treated as jokes.
Sonic 1 was amazing but Sonic 2 was GARBAGE! The movie was literally just 2 hours of Sonic being abused and beaten up nonstop! And worse still, Knuckles got NO COMEUPPANCE WHATSOEVER for what he did to him! They could have just called Sonic 2 "Hedgehog Abuse Simulator" and it would have worked!
@@TheBeatlesShow Knuckles genuinely outmatched Sonic, he shouldn't have physically lost to Sonic just because Sonic's the main character. His "comeuppance" came in the form of trusting Robotnik and paying the price. Honestly what makes Sonic's arc work is that he didn't have to physically beat Knuckles to get through to him, that wasn't the point. It was through Tom's words that he got him to turn over.
@@rubenk.7150 To be fair, Knuckles losing to Sonic would've been more accurate to the source material. He was literally the easiest boss in the game that introduced him.
@@notspider-man7777 But the fact that they remixed the source material so that Sonic's speed was genuinely outmatched by Knuckles' strength is what gives it substance as its own story.
I will always love the beginning scene in Sonic Unleashed where the true power of the chaos emeralds are shown once more, as Sonic completely rams through all of Eggman’s ships. Even better about the scene is when Eggman actually lets Sonic’s cockiness get the better of him, and Sonic actually ends up failing against Eggman for once (temporarily of course).
In Sonic The Comic Sonic had some flaws he wasn't very good with social things, he bottled up his feelings, he was a jerk to people especially Tails, however even he knew that running fast isn't enough for everything sometimes he had to be creative with his speed like attacking a stretching enemy that he can't hurt by using his enemy's power against them, an invincible robot that Sonic can't damage use electricity against it, an enemy that Sonic can't reach because Sonic can't swim, his solution take swimming lessons so he can swim.
Examples of sonic being nerfed in recent media: In the IDW comics, sonic is infected with the metal virus, and has to keep away from survivors and the battlefield to not infect anyone, and also has to leave the heat of battle at different intervals to run off the infection. More recently, Sonic’s leg is broken while fighting surge and on the island of scrap ikr, and he cannot rely on running or fighting. In the sonic movie 2, sonic has to fight against knuckles, who rivals him in strength, and also need to become more responsible to take care of tails. In sonic frontiers, the titans of the starfall islands require sonic to collect the chaos emeralds. If he doesn’t have them, he has to run away. … the cyber corruption really doesn’t change much for 3/5 of the islands. If we ever get to play as Sonic’s friends and fight against the corruption at the end of rhea island that would help to give them the spotlight (after sonic repeatedly saves his friends now they have to save them but it’s more fleshed out) In sonic prime… you already covered that
I’ve never seen this channel and i see for the first time a dancing letter N, a rabbit lady, a futurama clip, Mario music, and a depressed sonic image… I’m gonna like this channel aren’t I?
The biggest problem is that this didn't have to be an issue. If they could have bothered to give some care to non-Sonic , Sonic games. Then they could just do whatever they wanted , and fit characters over them later. Shadow The Hedgehog having the Frontiers move set would make way more sense. Shadow would finally have the play style that suits him. P.S. Good thing Frontiers is a simulation , officially. You have no idea often simulations gets used by fans as an excuse for stale illustration. At least Frontiers admits that it's lacking , it's honest so you can ignore the flaws.
the problem on not giving importance to generations is that we ignore the fact of sonic totally grecking perfect chaos without being super, and also silver in the same game, with more power and moves rather than just holding sonic.
Honestly sonics power is kinda the problem because sega is putting sonic in an area where he is high outerversal and all powerful in all of reality, all to make sonic stand out, not only does it push away other characters but it also makes a less fun character, and less fun story
The funny thing about the Dragonball Z comparison is that at least with Dragonball Z, there is a powerscaling reason present that made most characters unable to do anything but stand around and worry. The meta-era games didn't do all that much to justify these characters being unable to do much (despite all of them having some kind of super power), opting to keep them out of the way because "this is a Sonic game." Arguably the most egregious case is with Sonic's friends in Sonic Colors being essentially segregated to the DS version of the game. Now why could that be egregious, you may ask? Well, because whenever anyone talks about Sonic Colors casually (including this video), it would always be the Wii version that everyone talks about. Unless one means to specifically talk about the DS version, people will always lean towards the much more publicized console version of the game. Handheld games rarely get the amount of attention as a PC/console game, especially whenever there is a PC/console counterpart that will dwarf it in terms of attention. That could be argued as to why the Sonic Advance and Rush games haven't made a huge impact on Sonic's overall reception during the 2000s despite being well-received games with good sales.
Sonic should be more like DC instead of Dragon Ball and I say this as a Marvel fan(And TMNT fan). DC doesn't give a flying taco who or what their characters are and what is expected of them. I ain't saying Dragon Ball is sexist(they aren't. It's shonen) but, they don't have a Wonder Woman, no Hawkgirl, no Starfire and Raven, and they'll never have the balls for a Harley Quinn. Successful game companies like Mario, Fire Emblem(even if I no likey Fire Emblem), and Halo knows that not everyone playing there games is gonna be like Sonic to the tee minus being a blue fast hedgehog. Demographics can and will affect the way any piece of media from a large company is written and when that demographic is narrow or feels exclusive(Examples: Beyblade, Lalaloopsy, Max Steel, and Star Darlings) they FAIL and is usually left with boring, bland, or lackluster stories. The reason why Sonic is always so powerful is demographics. The reason why we rarely see other characters is demographics. And, the reason why we get what we get is demographics. And, nostalgia bait. I mean, why do you think we keep on getting Green Hill Zone in EVERY SINGLE GAME? I wish I could go more in depth but, nah..
OK. I'll elaborate. Demographics in Japan from America work very differently. Japan has four sup categories of anime being Shonen(Dragon Ball, Naruto, MHA), Shojuo(Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure, Ouran Host Club), Josei(Evangelion I guess), and Seinen(One Punch Man❤️). And, these bad boys have common tropes. The biggest trope in shonen is how the main character, usually a dude cause of the Demographics, is usually an all powerful being that can't be defeated. But, here's the thing. While Sonic trying to be like Dragon Ball not only hurt the franchise, they ain't even following it to a T. Goku struggles. He gets blown up and a good percent of it hurts. He messes up A LOT. Sonic isn't like Goku. He's like Sun Wukong which Dragon Ball is loosely based on. Crap, maybe we should start comparing those two.
Can add to it: We like Goku because he even acknowledged that he wasn’t always going to be there to save the day Even abridged Goku they pointed it out which was good. For future games it’d be great to see sonic acknowledge that he can’t do everything, and Tails and others start stepping up more. Edit: It’s also why I like Sonic Heroes, it’d capitalized on everyone having strengths of their own. If sega remade Heroes, I’d hope they’d try giving Team Dark, Rose, and Chaotix different gameplay styles to play with outside of speed power and flight.
i love how unleashed did Sonic's powers he is a bit of a force of nature in terms of he didn't corrupt from dark gia, but you literally see him lose in the first cutscene. it sets stakes while also showing that sonic is special. whether that be from him making friends with chip, his willpower, or just plain plot armor there's still that reason he is the main character without making him so OP that he just destroys everything.
I kinda like the idea of Sonic being broken. Simply to look cool. If Egghead shoots a beam at him he's dodges it so fast eggmans has to stop and figure out where he went. Eggman is dressed up to be clowned on. But if that's not enough, what I feel the franchise needs more of is a purposeful challenges and moments. From the environment. think of the tornado from sa1 where it sucks him up. Sonic can't run away if a freaking tornado lifts him off is feet. Other characters. I love how you mentioned that everyone should also have some form of speed as well, it does somewhat eliminate that problem, but I still feel sonic of course should still be faster and everyone else should have something that sonic could struggle with, Shadow's chaos powers, Silver's psychokinesis, etc. Which you did say, absolutely lovely. And Eggman himself. I think the flaw with eggman's machinery is that it's all laser beams and physical Force. Nothing that would actually challenge Sonic, he's so fast he can effortlessly dance around such things. THAT needs to change. The franchise should explore how to destroy Sonic's advantage, not play along with it. These challenges don't gotta be stupid impossible but one's where it means sonic can't handle everything. Including story. Sonic cannot be everywhere at once, this is where characters need to shine. These stories don't really take place other than where sonic is at that moment. Changes like this would work lovely again in the franchise.
Silver caught Sonic off hus guard twice and pulled off surprise attacks. He was outclassed by Sonic from the first fight and the second one in Generations
great vid, and great points, really got me thinking, subbed, the goku comparison is really good! thinking about it, I'd love to see a sonic training arc, like him training to be faster, or training to use chaous emeralds, or anything else.
It’s a video game character. The weakness depends on the one who controls the character. The movie version of Sonic having weaknesses is acceptable because it’s not a video game.
13:59-14:35 When Sonic said *”We”* in that cutscene, he wanted to share the blame so it wasn’t all on him. But him saying *”We”* in future cutscenes, definitely shows off character grown.
Know I'm late but it's one of the things the old comics did best. It wasn't Sonic's physical abilities that were a weakness but rather his arrogance. He was always the type to do what he wanted, when he wanted and those actions had consequences he was forced to face. Sadly you don't see that much in the games which sucks. His overconfidence in himself should always be his greatest weakness, forcing him to grow and rely on the friends he's made and changed by entering their lives.
This is why I headcanon sonic to be infinitely fast but incredibly physically weak. As in, in order to hit hard he needs momentum without it, he would be as strong or less than a human. This would mean that if he was in a situation where he bent his knee or was restrained he would be quite vulnerable allowing physically strong characters like knuckles and amy to take the spotlight. This would also make him struggle in battles where the space where he can run and move around is very limited. Another weakness that I personally like is him being a glass cannon, where he basically has the same resistance of a human, as such he must use his speed and rings to avoid getting hit because it will hurt him badly. This in my opinion would make him balanced, have him have an OP power like infinite speed but huge drawbacks to balance that power out. Moreover this makes it so that sonic has to think of alternative ways to defeat his enemies using the environment around him or just working with somebody.
Personally, I think we should buff Sonic's friends and make them useful again rather then nerf sonic. (But then again I love power scaling so that makes that point invalid.)
That's the thing, if sonic can do anything, anyone else will be useless. We have to give sonic friends reasons to be Sonic's friends to begin with, and why would sonic be friends with them? Cuz like Luffy and his crew, Sonic shouldn't be able to accomplish half of what he can without his friends. Hence the nerf. Sonic isn't a treasure hunter, hence why knuckles was needed in sa2, sonic also can't build intricately complex strategies but tails can, hence why he was with sonic in sa2. Sonic isn't the most delicate and good spoken person either, hence why amy was the one who brought shadow to their side. That's why sonic needs a nerf, so what he can't do his friends can.
I’m very glad Frontiers is taking the correct approach to this problem very much showing growth, and showing how sonic is weaker compared to someone like Sage, one of the main villains for Frontiers only thing currently missing would be other character development.
I would like to see sonic having character flaws that can hold his power back but to me sonic is the coolest when he's at his strongest and cockiest. Sonic should earn his strength and go through challenges to achieve this strength tho
I think the Sonic movies tackle this issue pretty well. In both movies, Sonic is shown to be powerful but, he still gets his butt handed to him pretty often, especially in Sonic 2. And Sonic in that same movie is shown to be arrogant and very impulsive, which is something he learns to overcome throughout the rest of the movie. Even Tails and Knuckles are not on the sidelines cheering him on, they both have character arcs themselves, and learn because of the moments they had with Sonic .In my opinion, Sonic movie Sonic is one of the best adaptations of the character from it's original source material.
Sonic 2 was awful because all it was was Sonic being beaten and abused with absolutely no gain whatsoever from it for 2 hours straight. I dunno what Sonic did that made you hate him so much, but he never did anything to deserve all the pain and suffering he got in the second movie. And Knuckles didn't get NEARLY what HE deserved1
So Sonic finally being defeated in a piece of media made the movie bad? You do realize that happens to majority of characters in movies Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, Spider-Man No Way Home, and Spider-Man 2 all do the same thing. Also you saying I hate sonic is incorrect, I'm still a Sonic fan, but Sonic doesn't need to be undefeated, Sonic losing is what makes him a little more relatable and just because he got beat down in his own movie, doesn't mean it's bad. And Sonic did end up going a lot at the end of the movie, he got new friends and he learned the meaning of being a hero. You are entitled to your own opinion, but I don't think you understood the premise of Sonic 2.
"Everyone loves Sonic adventure two" I disagree as I dislike Sonic adventure two, as I can give three reasonable reasons why. 1. The controls are worst then it's predecessor - Sonic adventure. 2. The story / world building was not as great as it's predecessor and where are the "adventure hub worlds?" You know that makes you feel that you are in the world, no? Ok a world map is good then. 3. Some of the in game mechanics where worsen / stripped down from it's predecessor that made the game play worst. I am talking about the treasure radar and the mech movements / laser beam lock on. Those are my three reasonable reasons why I dislike Sonic adventure two.
@@tatsuostatic8567Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the Sonic Adventure series are one of the best games to ever exist , and YOU CAN'T CHANGE THAT . They are godly tier games .
I want a game where Sonic like ACTUALLY LOSES by the end, could be a really interesting way to evolve the world and story. Could actually give the rest of the games following stakes that actually matter, while also giving them more direction as Sonic and friends make up for the loss, could be neat I dunno I don't write good plots for long-lasting multi-media franchises.
While that could be neat. I doubt Sega could do it well unless they remained consistent with the tone, writing, and English voice actors of the games. And more important, I doubt Sega would take a risk on that when the games sell like they are.
This video is as hard to watch. When you called goku a human I already knew your points about sonic were going to be off 💀 but I’ll give you forces, generations, colors and lost world. He faced almost no adversity in those games. But sonic the hedgehog can be arrogant, overconfident, impatient, and short tempered. Those are his character flaws. But he is also heroic, loyal, honest, witty, and philosophical. That’s what makes us love his character so much. Cause he’s relatable and inspiring. His character flaws have gotten him defeated in some shape or form before. And it’s not that he’s too strong, his enemies are too weak. He mostly fights a bunch of robots and rarely ever comes across an enemy like mephalis, shadow, silver, or even infinite who have all defeated him before.
I prefer sonic to have flaws, but the only problem is when sonic has had flaws they don’t treat them like flaws. For example, I don’t have an issue with sonic having his own ideology in IDW although it is flawed (Ian Flynn said himself it’s a character flaw). The problem is even though he’s questioned on it a lot and sometimes sees the repercussions of it, he has not budged a bit and maybe has pondered it for like a few seconds. Ik sonic is extremely confident but it almost reaches a point of delusion. Atp I don’t know if they’ll ever properly address it and that’s the story almost anytime sonic has deliberately been given flaws. I do get it’s hard for a series without an ending to give a character flaws to the main character, that’s why he’s a static character. If they do wanna give him flaws, it needs to be done carefully and mindfully, not just “hey we gave him flaws isn’t he realistic now??” For the record, I still like IDW and i’m not saying sonic needs to kill his enemies.
It's particularly frustrating as a Sonic Rush fan, because in Sonic Rush, there was Sonic and there was Blaze. Sonic is (as usual) a cool, confident 'hog, but he knows the value of friendship. Blaze is a cold, stoic loner cat, who is singularly focused on retrieving the Sol Emeralds. (Spoilers ahead for this near 17-year-old DS game.) Blaze's problem is that she's trying to do too much by herself and rejecting any offer of help (even if Cream tags along anyway). By the end of the seventh Zone, the two player characters clash, Sonic canonically wins (even if you beat his ass in Blaze's story) which leads to him telling Blaze that she doesn't need to shoulder the weight of the worlds alone, and that she should learn to let others help her. Then in the final story, Super Sonic and Burning Blaze team up to beat the two Eggmen, before saying their farewells, and Blaze goes back to her home dimension with the Sol Emeralds in tow.
Now these days she's either another cheerleader despite being a pyrokinetic princess and emerald guardian OR when she does get involved in the action she's regularly paired up with Silver (As a reference to Sonic 06; in which all her development/backstory mentioned in Rush is retconned, she gets sidelined for the "male hedgehog trio" in that game and she gets "killed" off near the end of the overall story to prop up Silver). Notice the pattern with character's that are shown and stated to be roughly equals with Sonic in their debut games? (Metal Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Silver, etc). Sheesh being a Sonic rival or counterpart character is brutal (especially if you are a fan of those characters, tho I argue Metal Sonic fans follow by Shadow fans are the most abused by Sega/Sonic Team tho I'll give a shoutout to Jet fans for their commitment). Edit: Sonic Vs Blaze in Rush is canonically a draw as stated in the Sonic Ecyclo-Speed-Ia/lorebook with was written by Ian Flynn and published by Sega btw.
@@lynxfresh5214 Between '06 and Mania, the only mainline games where Sonic isn't the only playable character are Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic 4 Episode 2. One could even argue that one or both of those are spinoffs, not part of the mainline Sonic series, and that'd be totally fair.
Here real late but Sonic Prime really did something with the personalities of Sonic and friends. Sonic is a quick to act but doesn’t think about what will happen when he does something. He’s reckless. And I’m really happy with what they did with Shadow. Shadow is what he was supposed to be. An older and mature counterpart to Sonic. He was retroactively made “edgy” when he was really just stoic. In Prime tho, they really show him as a big brother archetype, trying to make Sonic slow down and think about his actions. He’s not a villain, he’s a hero that’s just sick of Sonic’s recklessness.
Finally! Someone thinks the same as me! I believe Shadow in Sonic Prime is a mentor And Sonic’s recklessness did cause conflict Maybe he believes that since he is super fast, he can solve conflicts and defeat obstacles like it’s nothing That may be the reason why he never thinks before he acts, why he is so reckless
I feel like a sonic that is incredibly overpowered could be great if its done right i prefer a sonic that is overpowered but his weakness is his overconfidence as in he is too fast to he hit and can take down literally any foe but sometimes he is too confident and that leads him showboating which causes him to be beaten
You know what is the best way to make sonic the all powerful character but still make him invulnerable is to get all his friends to fight along side with sonic, give them their moment to show what they’re made of but eventually show that in all their power, it’ll be sonic that delivers the final blow or that it’s cuz of sonic that the whole gang of friends are so strong just like how tails is the way he is ever since he met sonic. You know, show how sonic may have rubbed off of each character so that they can be seen as capable as sonic. Honestly it’s a great idea but if you’ve read this, lemme know your thoughts.
The IDW metal virus comics show sonic in a state that is very interesting for the character where he is constantly weakened due to being infected by the virus so he cannot directly interact with people in danger. I think exploiting his concern for his friends but making him stay at a distance that makes the situation much worse than what it is because of his inability to help is a great approach.
It also showcases Sonic being an absolute idiot for letting Metal Sonic go free, which led to Eggman regaining his memories, which led to the Metal Virus arc, which led to needless suffering on the heroes' side (which nobody learns from, btw), and the comic decides to hammer home Sonic "principles" about valuing freedom so much that he won't lock people up no matter how awful they are.
I think your right about sonic needing to have harder enemies to defeat (or at least smarter ones) , but I dont think sonic needs to be weakened. how I see it is that most of the enemies from the meta era where just stupid and didn't know at all how to defeat sonic. sonic is just as powerful as he always has been, its just the enemies that have gotten weaker and weaker.
Sonic doesnt need a nerf what he needs is more interesting villans to face off against. The reason goku struggles is because with each new pinnacle of power he reached there was always a stronger person out there testing his limits. Sonic hasnt had his life be put in danger since SA2 But moving away from his powerscaling. It seems like the type of stories sega wants to tell are not things that have anything to do with sonic having to overcome major obstacles and adversity. Its fluffy hero stuff. For sonic to become interesting again there needs to be an overall change to the writing.
I feel in honor of the DB community and how they call Goku clownku, we call Meta era Sonic Clownic the Clownhog since he’s been given the DBS goofy attitude treatment
I miss the days when Tails was strong and Sonic's best friend and they fight together in Sonic 2 on the Sega genesis and not a baby needing saving all the time.
@@artistanthony1007 Shadow is a different character and Super Sonic in the First 2 Riders is a Deep Jason Griffith. This is a slightly deeper Roger Craig Smith. Not as deep as he can go (because he also did Batman) but pretty deep, considering I already never cared for his voice over Jason & Ryan because it always felt too deep for Sonic imo
I agree on everything except that sonic needs more character development. I don’t think sonic needs a it to be totally honest. He’s a flat character just like Goku his jobs is to Influence the characters around him. I do think that how they are they are Portraying and handling Sonics character needs to change though. Sonics confident but selfless and kind and heroic . Now they’ve made him over confident and cocky and kinda dumb at times and when something’s happens cause of that it’s like he doesn’t learn his lesson. Always bragging on top of that and making jokes . That stuff needs to go , sonic can make jokes and be witty but not this Braggadocio dude that thinks he’s untouchable. I also disagree that cause sonics a flat character he’s not interesting or less interesting then other characters that learn from mistake. Just cause you’re a flat character doesn’t mean you can’t make mistakes or learn from them. Goku is a character that has made mistakes and learned from them as a flat character. Hell he’s even grown just from not making mistakes but learning from others. He went from a person that was quick to take your life to someone who is very willing to spare and give you a second chance even in the most unforgiving of circumstances. Sonic like wise has shown just that . I game that perfectly shows the exact same concept is sonic hero’s with metal overlord/sonic after being defeated sonic told him if he ever wanted to challenge him again that he could . But I do agree that. Likewise sonic being a flat character he is supposed influence others and the story in new and interesting ways. Which he does. Sonic and the black knight being a great example, u can literally make the argument if sonic being the villain in that story because of his moral stance agains the girl who ended up being the real big bad of the story. I just think the issue isn’t with Sonic’s character but more how they use his character.
Took the words right out of my mouth. I like him both flawed and developed. It all depends on the story. In the multimedia stuff I appreciate him being developed and in the games I’d like him to be flat and straight forward. THAT’S what makes his character so interesting. A character doesn’t have to have flaws in order to be interesting and a character shouldn’t always be flat and repetitive either. For this blue fella, I believe both can work in his favor as long as it’s done right. Black Night, Secret Rings, and SA2 are prime examples of Sonic being a flat character. In the shows, movies, and comic are all prime examples of his development at its best. I’m also very exited to see what happens to him in Frontiers story. It’s going to be awesome. 💙
One of the things that made Sonic neat is his ideals. Sonic is powerful, but his character was Static, one of the things that people loved is how he influences the people around him. Think about it, the story of Sonic is better when Sonic is strong but a cheerleader, to the people around him. Like... Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic never changes from his cocky attitude and has a good back and forth with Shadow, but Sonic doesn't change, however, Shadow grows and comes to appreciate Sonic, and even sees that Sonic may be the ultimate lifeform. I love static arcs, I love it when people rise because of the static hero, because a static hero is headstrong but morally incorruptible, even when people can fight them, they don't need change, they can be flaws and all. Take the middle ages video game, with Sonic the Dark Knight or whatever it was called. Things to gather is that Sonic's Morals were incorruptible, hell he saw a kid crying and decided to fight a dragon to save their family... and he's chastised for it. Sonic was on a time crunch, fighting a dragon would eat into the time he had, but his morals wouldn't allow him to leave the child's family to their fate, he'd have to go even if he has work to do. In the Same game, against the final boss he listens to her, to understand her, and he fights her, due to his own personal ideology... PERSONAL ideology. See even though most people would agree that a kingdom of darkness isn't too great. This kingdom would be immortal and able to continually prosper, Sonic doesn't agree with that mindset, he believes you should live for the moment and take in every second of your life, and hell, Sonic is being told to STOP by his allies, not cheered on. Sonic doesn't back down though, even when he's being beaten down, Sonic must fight for what he believes in, he keeps getting knocked down, and his sword broken, but he doesn't back down from the fight. He has to stand, or what he believes in can't prosper anymore... People just don't know how to write static characters anymore. Cause Sonic is supposed to stand when everything is trying to knock him down, even his own allies, but he's fighting for his own beliefs and doing what he has to, to have an adventure and help his ideals prevail against forces that want to knock him down. His friends should properly grow and take charge. That's what the adventure series had, where even Eggman could be a hero, even for just a moment because Sonic kept on fighting.
Sonic is not supposed to be nerfed or recieve character development. Everyone else is supposed to develop and change and grow through Sonic. Sonic himself is not supposed to, because Sonic himself is already at his peak, he's already the best he'll ever be. He's a paragon, he's an inspirational figure that knows the meaning of life, he's what people Tails and Amy and others look up to. He's the absolute coolest, way past cool even. He is not supposed to be relatable. If you want someone to relate to, someone who's not strong enough and has to work hard to overcome tough challenges, then look at Tails. Sonic is the one that Tails aspires to be like, so Sonic needs to be that aspirational paragon champion of the world. The thing about Tails story and even Amy's story in Sonic Adventure is all about that gap between their level and Sonic's level, and their desire to close that gap and be more like Sonic. Tails' growth in the adventure games hinges on the fact that Sonic is what he is, and Tails is on the path to get there but isn't quite there yet. When you see Sonic, it's not supposed to be like looking in your mirror. It's supposed to be like looking up at someone who represents what you should strive towards. He's a guiding figure who leads you to being the best version of yourself. That is the kind of character Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to be.
Something that this line of logic is missing is that the ability to evolve as a character is a character trait in and of itself. A character that is supposed to be ultra good still has to have some kinds of flaws just to show that off. The important part here is not for Sonic to make mistakes, it's to realize and amend his mistakes. A pure symbol of perfection is simply out of reach for a mere human, but someone who shows how to strive towards perfection is a much more effective teacher. You can't learn by imitating, you have to see the process for yourself
I'm honestly quite shocked with how many different stances everyone has on this. In my opinion i think sonic is way too strong and needs to be knocked down a few notches and i'm not just talking about the over all power he has. I think sonic's characterization should be what holds them down from being too overpowered, by actively making him cocky ( like he should) it makes him take risks he wouldn't have taken and gives other characters ways to capitilize of this. He needs to be weaker with character flaws with the other characters being able to fill in on areas sonic falls short.
Being we call as Dark Sonic is a definition, that even the greatest heroes aren't perfect. Nobody is perfect even legendary heroes need sometimes ti show their weaknesses.
Yes but those games also showed Sonic fighting god level threats on his own (Unleashed wii version has Super Sonic fight Perfect Dark Gaia by himself, and console version had Sonic one shot it after taking the shield down and saving Chip)
The problem is, is that ever since the Ken Penders court situation. Sega put out rules that both the games and IDW Comics had to follow. One of them being that Sonic could never really lose
Even though losing to a new rival has always been the best way to introduce them. Knuckles in Sonic 3, Shadow in Adventure 2, even being outclassed by Jet with Extreme Gear. At least Sonic was allowed to lose to Infinite.
You need to read Sonic IDW's comic. That comic has singlehandedly made me love the character of Amy Rose, which since I had memory had always struck me as freaking annoying. But now, she is one of my favorite characters. And on the other hand, you gotta see what they did to Sonic on the Metal Virus arc. They really explored some interesting questions like "what happens if Sonic cannot stop to rest and needs to keep moving?", and they even gave consequences to Sonic's normally careless go-lucky attitude. That comic's a blast! And I cannot recommend it enough.
I actually came up with this ideal scenario once, and it actually plays out like this: - What if Sonic CAN'T save everyone? What if this time, he ACTUALLY fails? Let me know what your thought are in the comments below!
I like Sonic being basically unstoppable. That’s not to say he should NEVER have flaws but the fact he always seems to be holding back to an extent and is always capable of beating the villains makes it all the more serious when he actually fully goes all out. It makes you think “Damn things are getting real” when that happens. But like I said earlier, he should sometimes have flaws, but it needs to be so rare that it actually means something. This is one of the few things I don’t like with the Sonic movies, he is almost always showing his flaws off, whether that be emotional flaws, clumsiness, or being not physically experienced. Sometimes it works really well (e.g Sonic vs Knuckles) but other times it feels like he just can’t get enough problems that he can’t resolve (e.g Sonic constantly acting lonely or weak throughout the majority of the first film). This completely goes against how Sonic was designed, he was meant to already be a superior rival to Mario, thus, Sonic was meant to be able to blast through his obstacles and look cool while doing it, being so powerful that he makes very difficult accomplishments look effortless. That’s not to say Sonic should never encounter challenges that are hard for him but because he doesn’t do so that often it has more impact. Sonic Frontiers does a good example, SAGE already feels much more interesting and intimidating than the foes Sonic has had in the past because she is serious and an enemy that Sonic can’t simply overpower, or at least that’s how the trailers suggest it is. Because Sonic often doesn’t even struggle much with his villains and often doesn’t have any inner conflicts, this already accomplishes making the story of Sonic Frontiers seem more serious, while also showing an interesting and powerful villain without making Sonic look weak, because the audience already knows he is not weak which makes his opponents strength seem impressive and not something to dismiss. That being said, hopefully by the time the game comes out, it doesn’t contradict what I said about how Sonic Frontiers story seems to be turning out
Some versions of sonic do have personality flaws, and his weaknesses against water doesn’t get used enough for it to really matter overall. I did see a very short animatic where tails got knocked out by surge the tenrec and sonic became unhinged and legitimately a little scary. He threatened surge that if tails didn’t wake up he would straight up kill her, and then right when he was inches away from doing said killing tails woke up. I personally would like to see something like this is the games or a new show where he has his moments where he starts threatening the villains and acting so unlike the usual mold of what makes sonic, sonic, genuinely freaking out the villains and then going back to his normal self like nothing happened
Damn, I am taking some inspo to add to my fanfiction Even though my OC is the main character, Sonic and Shadow is involved so that is a cool idea I could add
@@quit3118 idea for new version of sonic: on the surface he's the same old thrill seeking fun loving hero that everyone loves, but if you've known him for a very long time you'll start to notice every once in a while he'll say or do something that's unnatural or out of the ordinary for sonic, and if you stare at him for long enough he'll even give the smallest hint of a twitch, when a villain of the week starts getting on his nerves instead of just giving his typical witty banter he'll wordlessly start beating on them, being way more violent about it than normal sometimes even breaking bones, during this he'll have this odd expression on his face, but his eyes have an ungodly amount of hate behind them, a burning animosity that someone like sonic shouldn't be capable of showing, but if someone snaps him out of it he'll act like it didn't even happen, he acts as if he doesn't even remember what he just did, he hides it around tails because he doesn't wanna taint his pure innocence, amy and shadow can see it, knuckles tries to keep the violence to a minimum, sonic seems to have a mutual indifference to most of his friends when he's like this, sometimes even questions why he's friends with them in the first place since they always get in his way when it comes to actually crippling or killing his enemies, he doesn't understand why they think it's so wrong to kill them when doing so would make all the people they save's lives so much easier. eventually all his friends except tails try to sit him down and have a talk to him about how he's been acting, he comes to the conclusion that they are trying to make him out to be the bad guy and they are betraying him ant that he can't trust anyone other than tails, so he beats all of them, kidnaps tails, and runs away to somewhere they wouldn't find him, they eventually find him, sonic uses the chaos emeralds to go super, shadow also goes super and they fight it out, tails convinces sonic to stop all of this and let him and the chaos emeralds go, shadow kills sonic when his guard is down, the end
I agree, I love boom sonic, well, I love the boom characters. The series is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, and that's coming from someone who does not like cartoon network shows (for context, sonic boom was a cartoon network show). I love the character development, which sonic does not have a lot of. I also recently rewatched sonic x, and that show is great, but sonic just feels like a side character, who is also the one who beats the bad guys. He was self centered, but at the same time, not. The show focused more on other characters, which were way more interesting than sonic. For example,
We have about 0 information of Sonic Frontiers, and still the game we are now yelling "The chisen one who will give ballance to the force" still doesn't fix this problem.
Interesting video. It feels like sonic with flaws would kinda make him looks weak which comparing him to other characters wouldn’t make him as cool tbh. But you have good points
