I love this because in my greek mythology class in High School, we actually did a lesson on modern myths and we actually had to dissect episodes 4, 5, and 6 and identify each step of the Hero’s Journey in what Luke did in Star Wars and learned about everything that J is talking about right now. We also had to dissect The Matrix as well! It was my favorite part of the class!

This might sound weird but the storytelling technique described at 3:06 actually reminded me a bit of the Exodus story. Hear me out- I tried to describe it to you. 1. Call of Duty This one is kind of obvious- the burning bush telling Moses to go free the slaves. 2. Refusal of Call A lesser known fact is that Moses declined his duty because he was too modest to speak with the king, and because he stuttered. 3. Crossing First Threshold Moses went. 4. Road of Trials Moses had to convince the king to let the slaves go via ten plagues. 5. The Ultimate Boon The slaves went free. I know that a lot of people might hate on me for this so plz don't I just wanted to point out the similarities. Thx, hope you found this interesting

Perfect. The story of Moses was supposed to show that he was a tool used by God to free the people, but when he became arrogant and struck the rock he ended up being punished for thinking he was the one with the power.

This is actually a fact and pretty known that the story of Moses follow the bits of the hero's journey... it is considered one of the best examples if it. Superman actually took aspiration from it's hero's journey (of moses) especiaplly at the first stage (unusual brith) when the hero is born to a god or king oarent and being sent away from the magic world to the ordinary world becuase he is at danger at birth (and all his men are gwtting killed ) and the baby hero find 2 parents, when the mother takes him immediately and the father is kinda though but agrees. Also Mowgly. Luke skywalker. Harry potter. Hercules. Tarzan and etc and etc

There's this book I read in sixth grade called "The Door Within" by Wayne Thomas Batson. I highly suggest it for anyone who sees this and it followed the same basic pattern of the monomyth. Another one that follows the structure is "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo. This particular story I'm rereading right now and it's such a beautifully written bedtime story. The movie was trash, though.

Best example I can think of of this story telling method? Lord of the Rings (book). In the book Frodo spends 20 YEARS deciding weather he will take the ring to Mordor, and then along the way is attacked by orcs, attacked by nature, attacked by a squid, attacked by more orcs, attacked by a Balrog, attacked by more orcs, more orcs, Gollum, more orcs, more orcs, a few more orcs, giant spider, orcs, volcanic ash plain of hell, Gollum, and then Saruman's angry revenge invasion of the shire thrown in at the end. And that is just Frodo and Sam, the rest of the fellowship fights in 5 major battles in the war of the ring, but it all ends with the (~37th) heir to the throne as King of Gondor, Rohan not being destroyed, The Dwarves reclaiming Khazad-Dum (Moria), Gundabad, and Dains Halls, (Belegost too I think), founding a new city, The elves all leaving off to Valinor, Gondor capturing Umbar, Harad, and invading Rhun. And Saruman finally defeated by a bunch of hobbits, now that is what I call a happy ending (half of which can only be found loosely jotted down after the last chapter in the many appendixes).

zombieLISKlizard yeah true. I have tried to finish the series like three times but I always never got through the third one. But I love the hobbit because I can easily read it and it always leave me with a felling of magic and thought in my head. Like I can never forget the book and I keep thinking about the places and stories they have and I can never really leave it behind. It's honestly my favourite book just because it one of the only ones that left me with this sad but amazing feeling.

Hey guys, I've always been a huge fan of your channel. I love your stuff. And this episode helped me. I'm actually writing a book that follows the mono myth. The main character is called through a co-character, she refuses because she doesn't trust this character, she then though goes with him and leaves her home planet, she then goes through trials put in place by the co-character's father or the king and then finally they achieve the task the co-character wanted the main character to complete in the first. It's actually so crazy though that so so so many stories/movies fit the myth!!!

One of my favorite book series of all time, Eragon, has the plot progression/method like discussed in this video and I strongly recommend it. In my opinion it is one of the best fantasy esc books of all time

Jack OO7 but: look. The main character with important parents who lives with his aunt and uncle and is unaware of what happens outside his house until the story starts. The best friend who ends up with the other best friend. x2 The white haired mentor who eventually dies and it heavily affects the main character. The character who wants redemption, but we don't know until the end. The main bad guy who apparently likes black.

Percy Jackson (books) also follow this. In The Lightning Thief, Percy is called to Camp Half-Blood (after, ya know, almost being murdered), but the refusal is partially his mother and partially himself. The threshold is when he finally goes to CHB, his road of trials is everything he goes through at CHB and on his journey to the Underworld. His ultimate boon being when he faces off with Ares on the beach. Also, still haven't seen Star Wars 🤷

me and my friends made a star wars club at our high school this year, Los Altos High School in Hacienda Heights, and one of the staff told us about this and to go see her if we ever wanted to discuss it and to learn more about the hero's journey

As someone who wants to be an author and an animator, I can say that I study the heros journey a lot. There is also a series I watched on Netflix called myths and monsters or something like that and it first episode talks about the heros journey and mentions star wars among classic tales and folklore that use this. So yeah loved this video!

My English class actually watched Star Wars Ep 4 when we studied the Hero's Journey... I also had to analyse HP and Philosopher's Stone into the Hero's Journey steps for the assignment. It was fun :)

This is one of my favorite topics. I've noticed the hero's journey in some of the best in American Animation and plan to do a video on it soon since some are on-going shows. One example I will give is Gravity Falls (without spoilers): Dipper is called to adventure when he finds the Journal, he refuses the call to accept the supernatural at first until he needs to rescue Mabel, his various trials are the monsters and unraveling the mysteries around Gravity Falls they achieve the boon of finding the author and saving the world. There are a lot more steps but I'll save that for my video which will be one of my first once I figure out the editing software I just got. lol

I've read The Hero of 1000 Faces. It's very good if you're an author or if you want to analyze film (or as Lucas did, make a film of your own). Many many stories, whether they try to or not, use lots of the touchstones outlined in the book in different patterns. For example, Spirited Away follows a lot of different touchstones including some not outlined in this video. I highly recommend the book. It's really interesting how many of humanity's best stories follow at least a few of the touchstones. I challenge you to find a story that doesn't follow at least 5 of these. This book is very good if you're a kid and need to write a book report because you can always discuss a bit about how the book does or doesn't follow the path of the monomyth and why it works or doesn't work. Great video about a great book that influenced a great movie.

I've been exposed to the heros journey thing throughout 7th grade and it was a pain to do the busywork with but hey we got to read Percy Jackson when we focused on the heros journey the most

I love the idea of the mono-myth (don't know if I'm spelling it right); I first heard of it when reading the Odyssey in my English class once, and since then it's really influenced the way I read books and watch movies. I like to think that part of the reason we as humans love this type of story is because it tells the story of someone who conquers adversity and chooses to rise above circumstance for the greater good. We love to see people succeed, especially if it takes a lot of work to get there, because that's what we deal with every day in real life. One of my favorites that follow the mono-myth (other than the ones mentioned in the video) is the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books.

When i was in high school( around 98), i received for christmas a book called "starwars, the story of a myth" ( i think). It was an analysis of the trilogy in regard of the joseph campbell theory. That year, i had an english (2nd lamguage) assignment to "analyse" a movie. I showed some analysis point of the book on the trilogy, with visual cues...VHS...Wow i feel old saying that.
