You're not weak needing those days. You are not the problem, the system is. The whole educational system needs to be changed. Being smarter with mental health to survive the system, means you buy into the madness. Measurability in education is a war crime, makes victims around the world. We claim drop outs are losers. No, they always have talents education doesn't reward, which is insane. That too sickens people. In fact education is organized around the measuring of progress in learning, not in what maximizes learning, like playing and messing around. It prefers to create docile workers for jobs, not critical thinking people who know how to change the system. It prepares you for the system as it is, not for the life that awaits you. I remember 9th grade, I'd had a rough month school-wise, we suffered a loss within the family and a test I was woefully unprepared for was coming up. My mom noticed how stressed I was and allowed me to take a day off, calling me in as sick. I had a day to relax and catch up on several things. It is strange, how something like not going to school, deviating from the daily schedule for a bit, helped me feel better. Now with the pandemic and having school online, I never feel like I can take a day off and have suffered not just one, but two panic attacks in the last two months, my first and second ever. If there's no set routine to take a step back from, things get harder to manage, and I've never wanted to go back to school this desperately, just to get a day away from my head.
@joshlanders
@joshlanders 4 года назад
Hey Cooky, hang in there. Online classes can be really intense and stressful. What your campus likely didn't tell you: you have to set your schedule. So much of school is "industrial". 8 to 3, lunch, a days b days, etc. The list goes on, and varies. But in life, you set your schedule. When looking at an online syllabus you have to see how that educational plan fits in with all the others. In an office or job you have a team and manager to help you make those project choices. For now you are on your own to set things up. That is unless you ask for help. Let your professor(s) for challenging coursework know where you struggle to juggle. That way, if you aren't alone, and this is the 40th email, they change the expected delivery of assignments. I had one professor ask us in a poll and another one who set daily quizzes that were times with follow up posts you have to respond to other students. It was nuts. I told the professor my entire other schedule and how much of a time suck his 8 credit hours were. He cut everything down to the online lecture and the forum, no more daily quizzes to prove we were engaged in his course. Also it pays to talk on the phone with professors and not email them, so for professors that give you a phone number, call. Let other school faculty and staff know too. The limit of a professor stops at the Dean, so telling the dean your ads struggling allows room for conversation and improvement of online coursework. Remember that these online classes equate to less work for professors, they feel like they are grading enough and assign more and more, to fill their schedule up. Hang in there, get to graduation and but don't hold your breath - take in a deep breath and try not to stress about grades. You can retake a course, you can retake a test, you can take a break. Grades legitimately to not matter after graduation unless you plan to immediately go into a master's (not recommended).

@@joshlanders I only saw your response right now, but I 1000% appreciate your advice. I tried creating a schedule, but having classes at any point between 8 and 17 o' clock took the agency away from students in many parts, which they have changed over the last couple of months (luckily). In our school they made a survey at the end of the school year and told all teachers to cut back on the work a little. Some teachers still have issues figuring out a good amount, but it's gotten better. We just started back on online school on the 11th of January and it's a bit overwhelming, but they are working on it and are asking students for their thoughts at the end of each week.

Getting overwhelmed when bunch of things are happening at the same time with too few things to back you up, like the current situation, can be hard. My high school acts all "oh yeah we really care about our students' mental health!" but they don't let us have mental health days, we tend to get in trouble for 'disturbing' the class with a panic attack, and, if we aren't in trouble, then we're left in the hall until we 'settle down'. They don't try to address the situation or try to fix it. They just leave you until you can bottle your feelings back up

Personally, this should be at least introduced to politicians around the world. Even if not adopted, this should be a vocal point for all. In schools, I can vouch that mental health is not respected like it should be. The themes (at least in my school) of mental health were mocked by members of staff. Mocked. I know that as someone who suffers silently, people making those snide remarks don't help, it makes people worse thinking that struggling is bad. It's ok to be not ok, but people don't see that.

At work, I have the option to unplug and have my "mental health check ins" by using my PTO. However, schools are not the same be it in Elementary to college/higher education. There was only 1 professor/teacher that I have had in my life (I am 28) that had mentioned how important self care and mental health is important. This is how students can do better and be happier with themselves - not to mention be more motivated and feel like their mental health actually matters.

I think this whole video is brining light to a mental health cause that most people are not paying attention to. The rise of suicide in young children is so prevalent nowadays that it’s astounding more people have not taken it more serious. I think the mental health days are a great idea if the kids take this seriously and don’t abuse this.

My parents did something similar and did also call them "mental health days". But yeah, students should be allowed these--how many I'm not sure, but I was very depressed in middle school and these helped. Just an option to opt out of any given day, no questions asked (by the school), no penalty. I think that's a great idea.

Of course it matters. but before going to the bigger thing, be aware of the little things first, which we can do today. and the little thing that we can do now is aware of mental health.

really hope and wish that because could understand that it’s hard, especially to those who have other things that at the time are more serious than school work, they just can’t keep up with work and all. Personally as a honor roll student, I told myself I want to quit, I want to stop this hard work after all this studying and days I would work myself for and just quit it all because I just couldn’t hold up much longer. It felt so relieving when we would have short breaks because it gave me enough time to really enjoy my time without any work being assigned for awhile, so I do think at least 3 days off of school anytime should be good for every kid. I understand that back then it wasn’t like that and you had no other choice, but same time, no one really prioritized mental health days. Maybe school does prepare us in the future to not miss a day and so on, but 3 days won’t hurt. We’re doing our best to at least do the most that we can at school for who we want to be as we get older. It’ll help us a lot more in academics as well to just take a break.

I was over-worked and overwhelmed in college during the 90’s. I made a visceral, very real attempt to end it all, too, because... I barely had any friends, and all of my instructors focused on everything I WASN'T doing. I ended up in the hospital, stomach being pumped. So.. yup, they "brought me back". After that, I was treated with a mild apathy and mostly ignored. It's now 25 years later... and... I'm pretty much in the same position. No friends. No partner (she just left me, mostly due to her own mental illnesses)... and I'm treated with a sort of mild neglect and apathy. So little has changed. Interesting.

I know, we are ordinary human beings, our brains, our bodies, even mentally we must be tired, therefore there needs to be vigilance to mental health so that all systems in the body are maintained health.

Bom foi isso. Esse video foi muito esclarecedor

As a youth mental health and peer leadership consultant, I agree mental health skills begin with open, honest conversations. It is unrealistic to assume just because we "talk" about mental health and promote help-seeking behaviors that students and adults feel comfortable using the words to ask for help. We must practice mental health conversations with youth with specific words and skills to guide a friend we care about to a trusted adult who can offer mental health support. It takes a village. This will not be accomplished with a worksheet, video, or book - it requires a commitment to normalize conversations about mental health. When we talk about tough topics like mental illness, we strip the stigma that shames children and teens into silence.

I got a 3.6 GPA and was in ap/advanced classes and I would skip at least 20 days a year..... Mostly to play videogames, smoke weed, do homework, watch movies, etc.... It's bad because real 9-5 jobs don't give u that much vacation time so I set up bad habits there but at the end of the day it made my life so much better. I would fall asleep in tons of classes too.... My hate for school got so bad that I used to take 3 Oxycodone and smoke weed before school then take 2 more oxys once a few classes passed by because I hated school that much. At the end I was stoned every single day in school.

I was a worrier, too, and suffered migraines at an early age. My mom and I had a similar understanding and valued our mental health days. She would call in my absences until I was old enough to do so myself. "Are you sick?" she'd say, and we'd both laugh when I replied "Yes, sick! Sick and tired of..."😄

i wish people were this concerned about mental health in india as well. especially for high school students. people think online classes are much better but trust me they are way stressful. we have to sit in front of the screen for straight 5 hours and can't miss any classes because the matter discussed, won't be repeated. i just get one day off a week and that is on Sunday (yes not even on saturday). and it's not the end here, we have to complete assignments of almost 15 chapters in all 10 subjects. we have to prepare 10 project files and also study for the exams next month but YES ITS ALL AMAZING (':

This is actually a great system because you can catch up with how well the students mental health are. In my country, Korea, they only made a classroom called 'we-class' and just put a teacher in there and wait for the students to come. It's passive, and doesn't do much. All it does they put a bunch of toys... and a LITTLE bit of counseling NOT TO DISTURB SCHOOL WORK...And the students think only dumb students go there. The point is that they should take it more seriously and make an active move. Also, in Korea, everyone think resting for mental health sounds stupid, which is discouraging... But we can always change and thank you for giving me insight about how to take care of students mental health.^_^

Mental health continues to be one of the most biggest overlooked problems in society today. It's sad because the fix for most of us would be just common sense things. For example how about not asking students to go to class at 8AM? People's brains don't function normally that early, why not start at 10-11AM? How about making a 3 day weekend? Or do it how France does with no school on Wednesday? How about actually teaching about mental health, going more in depth about things and providing specialists at school or college. Teach from an early age how to handle stress, make stuff like meditation or yoga mandatory. For most people, if you get the correct amount of sleep, nutrion, and physical activity in, your mental health is typically gonna be in good shape.

the worst thing about my mental health is that my parents don't believe me when i try to tell them how burnout and drained i am from school. i wake up every weekday stressing about whether or not I'm going to have enough time to get ready or not. and even if i feel like crap, i still go. school is so draining for teenagers to the point where it's not even funny anymore. i went from "i enjoy school, i want to go" to "i hate school, it's so boring" to now "i hate school, i'm so tired. BUT I HAVE TO GO." i'm starting to put school and education over my own health and i have nobody to help me control it. i remember one morning i woke up and i was so mentally drained. i looked tired, i felt tired and i couldn't stop crying. i obviously wasn't okay. but my parents sent me to school anyways, because it "wouldn't be fair on my younger siblings if they went to school and i stayed home". wow. and it took my little sister to text my dad to come and pick me up because she could tell i wasn't okay. please, please, please look after yourself. school and mental health is so scary when it isn't controlled. i love all of you
