Superbad has been a longtime favorite of mine, this video aims to break down what I think sets it apart from the crowd; its cast, its script, not using parody or pop culture as a crutch for laughs, showing respect for women(despite some foul dialogue) and demonstrating intimacy between men makes it a film that still stands up surprisingly well over ten years later.

Thanks for watching! I had a hard time pinning down just one reason why "Superbad" has remained a personal favorite of mine for all of these years, so I ended up discussing all of the different reasons I believe it still holds up. Hopefully you guys enjoyed this more "laid-back" video, I don't intend to do them all of the time, but I like breaking things up with something a little lighter on occasion, and I hope that's okay with you! Also, be sure to check out your free Squarespace trial! I've been really happy with my website ever since I started using it, and I'm confident you'll feel the same! www.squarespace.com/filmradar P.S. 50,000 SUBS! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Something most people don't get about that scene in American Pie is yes it's a violation of privacy, but the people who wrote the movie are smarter than first glass, it's obvious that what is happening, the whole "you're not a man unless you do it" and them all watching it is a jab at the boys not the act, it's making an observation about the teen masculinity and sexuality culture at the time
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 6 лет назад
I disagree. I think Stifler is meant to be a caricature of the typical high school "bro" and is always seen as such by even his own friends, and the filmmakers hammer the point home by constantly putting him into disgusting or embarrassing situations. Whereas every one of the guys is down for the webcam idea, even the supposedly sensitive Oz, and Jim ends up being rewarded for his actions at the end of the film. Seems to me a weird way to take a jab at the boys.

@@daniel_netzel Being an autistic Christian I can't say I saw myself there at all (because being austistic means i had almost no experience with people and so I didn't hang out with kids my age to see what they're like or how they talk) but I saw the movie for the first time a month ago (I'm 20) and thought it was really smart with how layered it is, the soundtrack is amazing and I love how they dismantled toxic masculinity. BTW that last bit makes us feminist, or so my mom would say. Anyway, great film, love how timeless it is, having only seen it this year it holds up great!

You’ve got a good point with nostalgia there. Pop culture humour is a big pet peeve of mine because in 5-10 years time no one will understand it, and the best comedies don’t rely on it.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 6 лет назад
It drives me crazy when I see it abused. A little bit here and there is fine, even cool sometimes, like an inside joke for the original audience who grew up at the right time, but too much and the whole thing becomes a mess.
@milesedwards3287
@milesedwards3287 6 лет назад
Film Radar I completely agree. I think it can only really work if what’s being referenced won’t be forgotten. For example Clerks heavily uses Star Wars references, but it works because Star Wars is a beloved classic that probably won’t ever be forgotten about. So then it works. But in other films and particularly TV, it doesn’t age well because it’s very era specific.
@EricGraham94
@EricGraham94 2 года назад
@@daniel_netzel that’s something even the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are guilty of, ie: Spider-Man Homecoming making Ferris Bueller references. That’s why I’ve fallen out with that series and would prefer to watch, say, Zack Snyder’s DC movies because at least they’re more authentic and don’t rely on pop culture references to make it relevant

I was about 16 when this film came out in the U.K. I went to see it with an awkward crowd of girls and guys. A few of the more obnoxious people in the group stopped paying attention and started throwing popcorn around, and then left before even the halfway point. The film was lost on them. The few of us that stayed could not stop talking about the movie and how great it was with quotes and "the part where..."'s We went on to be really good friends for the rest of the time we were at school.

The thematic criticism of Seth and Evan's attitude towards women and their mutual love for each other is actually reflective of the arc of the story, where they end up growing apart from each other; rather reflective of young men in high school. The story is just young men growing up over the course of the events of the film: that yes, it is okay for men to show affection to each other, that women are not just objects for dicks to go into, and that yes, they will move away from each other. The closing shots of the movie are Seth and Evan looking longingly at each other as they become figuratively (and literally) separated by the elevator.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 5 лет назад
Exactly! It's why I love it so much. Too many high school movies are frankly insulting to most high school kids, painting them as purely sex driven sociopaths with no empathy for anyone. This one gets it right by showing the obvious shortcomings of younger guys, but that deep down there is a heart and a brain working there.

Honestly? Not many. There are some good to decent college movies, Adventureland is beautiful, I thought Neighbors was really funny. 21 and 22 Jump Street are masterclass comedy films, but the main characters are adults so I don't know if it's technically "teen" comedy, but yeah, not too many at all.

Adventureland is actually from the same director as Superbad, and I think it's a better film. It's nowhere near as funny, but it's more of a dramedy than straight comedy, and it's absolutely lovely. I also couldn't recommend the Jump Street movies enough, absolutely hilarious from start to finish.

You know, despite never seeing those "I love you, dude" scenes unironically, I can definitely appreciate them more, and I completely agree with you that Superbad has aged spectacularly. Even if you think Jonah Hill's character at first is a douche, he has great redeemable qualities and changes a lot throughout the movie.

I have to say...I'm not sure what made this come up in my recommended, but your breakdown here nails it. This really is such a great movie and you highlight really well all the great stuff about it, and how despite its often raunchy, over the top humor, in the end, principles for being a decent human being shine through and pay off. I also found it to be a funny coincidence that you said "You didn't have to be 17 when it came out to appreciate it", then I thought about it...I was 17 when it was marketed, 18 for a month when it came out. Go figure!

First time seeing your channel. You have acquired a sub! Great video. Great editing and very well thought out. Plz do Fear and Loathing. It's a classic, I'll admit, not for everyone but definitely should be covered by somebody who cares about the material they are covering. These videos are fun not only 2 here somebody's thoughts on a movie you love, but also allows an audience who hasn't seen the movie to have it explained in a way that might make them interested in watching it when they typically would pass right over a film such as Fear and Loathing. Do it for the die hard fans, such as yourself.

I disagree... nowhere in my multiple times of watching american pie did I get the feeling that the movie was trying to say that it was "totally fine" to film someone naked. that whole sequence never dwells into the morality of it all... it stays on the funny and the tragedy of jim.
@MellowCee
@MellowCee 6 лет назад
akshay de exactly, take the webcam scene for example when the narrator said they were distributing child porn by law. But back then it wasn’t really common knowledge when two teenagers were filming (in not taking about young child pornography but more 16/17 year old with 16/17 year “porn”). If I can remember Nadia never brings it up so maybe the whole school knew but she never got wind of it (bring a foreign ex student and all) Also the narrator forgets to mention jim was constantly peer pressured and in this example he was into showing his mates which is in fact a true thing with teenage boys, getting egged of by their mates.

Exactly. It is so weird how some people get this idea that if something is portrayed in art then it is being condoned, or that people will think a bad thing is okay if it is done in a movie or book or game. It's a really sickening trend in modern culture: this inability to separate reality from fiction.
@petalchild
