Why Swapping To a Modern Engine is The Best Mod for a Classic 911 ! 911 3.2 + 964 RS CUP Engine

The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 always felt a little underpowered. The 964 on the other hand was always a bit too heavy and lacking the raw feel... so combine the best of both, put a CUP spec 964 engine in it to make the best 911 3.2 Carrera ever!

I absolutely love the whole resto mod scene especially when it involves a 911! Awesome stuff Jack 😃

Makes sense as a resto mod, enough DNA of the original car with a lighter engine does make some sense. Would far prefer this to an EV conversion any day of the week.

EV destroys the cars character, plus if it decides to get hot and catch fire as EVs do you have no chance of getting out, none. Tell Klaus Schwab to fek off, leave us alone.

I've been working on lowering the weight of my NA 944 with the 2.5 and it's a different car. So far taken out about 150lbs and added exhaust and intake. Not much you can do to engine but plans are 2100lbs and restore suspension and brakes and that's it. Such fun cars. 🔥

BTW, this car has torsion bar suspension, not torsion beam. Torsion bar refers to the springs being straight rods loaded in twist, while torsion beam refers to the "twist-beam" rear suspension found in (among other cars) the early VW Golf.

I can conclude Simeon simply opted for a much taller ring and pinion set that makes the overall gearing in 5th feel "too tall". When you mention cams, what do you have installed in your 964? Mod S? They'll run out of steam at around 65-6700 rpm on a 3.4+ liter displacement engine. On a 2.5 and downwards, they pull to the moon. I've recently finished building and tuning a 3.4 for my best friend's '84 Carrera. Single plug, Mahle pistons, Mod S cams, PMO 46mm carbs, crank triggered ignition. It makes 300hp at 6600 rpm. I like torsion bar cars over the 964 personally. The twin plugs and excellent G50 transaxle are very nice, but that chassis is so damn heavy. Cheers to yourself and Simeon for sharing this lovely car with us!

I'm building my 3.2 engine now into a 3.4l with 964 cams and exhaust. I can't wait. I'm not sure what the difference is in the air cooled engine weights, but the core of the A/C engines all have similar cases. Most of the weight savings I've seen so far is in the aftermarket SS exhaust I've purchased- maybe 4 lbs for both heat exchangers. Switching out the muffler is worth at least 12 lbs. I have the rear bumper off mine and a carbon fiber bumper blade for the G series would be great. Too many backdated cars now so let's save the g series for us 80's kids.

I went a similar route. I rebuilt mine 3.5L with Nickies, 964 cams and have a fibreglass rear bumper. Dumped the standard inlet manifold and fitted ITBs from a Triumph Street Triple. Huge weight saving. I was getting 265BHP before the ITBs went on. Just swapped out the Motronic ECU for an Emerald ECU so will be getting that setup next. Hoping to see 275 - 280.

As german watching this the only trouble is I heve this weird queasy feeling when you are going through these curves that there is something wrong. It is simply so that the instincts from driving on the other side of the road give you this feeling "Oh sh*t, I hope no other car comes. Oh, there is one ALAAAARM! Oh ja, right, this is UK, all is well". I suppose it is not so critical (for a continental driver) when you are in the city or in traffic, as there are constant "reminders" where your lane is. But on these lonely country roads I could imagine it is easier to drift to the wrong side. Probably it is better not to take your LHD car along, but deliberately rent an RHD, then you have an "in-built constant reminder".

Few years ago…. I jumped on the opportunity to test and taste the same concept… 3.2 with 993 engine that time 300hp as well minimum … as passenger…and a fairly good driver…. The car was flyiiiiiiing… extremely efficient… but with a sound more modern… I prefer the 3.0 or 3,2 sound… just a question of taste….

That’s a lovely 911 - would rather see a modern engine swap over an EV mod any day. I know we need to reduce reliance on petrol - but if these are used for high days and holidays, with an EV doing the bulk of journeys, then surely that’s a happy compromise?

Interesting thought... hmm; gives me an idea for my old P5B..... Not an engine swap; convert to a 5 speed manual IF a gearbox can be sourced from an SD1. My only concern is the Insurance - would that; like the engine swap featured here; be classed as one Modification too far? Cool content. Enjoyed that 👊👍.

Saw a 1970’s 911 in London recently and the the engine was running so rich, one could smell the over fuelling as it drove by. Had a 993 Turbo 4, sold it, the 4WD was too anodyne, pedals either too close under one or the steering wheel and gearshift too far away. And, too much Turbo lag and the exhaust note stifled by the turbos. Beautiful to look at. Burnt its alternator belt off twice, dealer failed to fix it the first time for any durability, I fixed it myself the 2nd when it burnt off entering Barcelona. Incorrect spacing on a tension pulley which is adjustable in the width of the channel with shims. Happy owner of a 928 GTS Manual for 17 years.

Agreed 100%, but when I got my 3.2 (1989 Forest Green), I thought the first thing I would do is swap out the steering wheel for a Momo. The original wheel just looked so ugly at first. But the more I drove the car the less I wanted to change the wheel. Now when I watch 3.2 videos with Momo wheels they just look wrong to me. So my advice to anyone who purchases a 3.2 with an original steering wheel is to drive it for at least a few hundred kilometres before deciding whether you want to swap it!

Hi Jack, love your videos. I'm sure it's me, but I think 911's should be kept standard. Putting Renault seats in a 911 is pure motoring vandalism. Swapping in a non standard engine and adding whale tail spoilers just results in a Frankenstein car and in Porsche land this holds little worth. Imagine buying a Chippendale cabinet and adding an epoxy top.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime./()/()/()()!
