I’m personally for bringing back the full body tech suits, under the condition that they be supplied to the athletes competing at the international level. Sport can keep up with science as long as the playing field is evened.

@tamjacky4596

@@djdoc06 actually the price of kneeskins and jammers are more expensive than those banned suits. The price of suit won’t drop because of the extra fabric. The price of those pro suit so high is the technology behind and the demand is low compared to the mass market. And the textile Arena X-Glide and Jaked J01 used is just polyurethane, which is a common textile in manufacturing clothes and the cost is very low. If FINA didn’t banned the polyurethane and full body suits and the suit is so easy to produce, there will be more corporate producing these kind of suits, which can make the price of suit cheaper. At that moment, it won’t be a barrier or a problem. Runners are using expensive carbon fibre running shoes and cyclist are using ten thousand dollars bike for competition, why there are no such complaint on that? What FINA should do is to make those suit accessible to all athletes instead of limiting what suit can the swimmers wear!

I think that the rules regarding suits should be changed. In my opinion in 2009 the biggest problems were that the suits were expensive and that the arena xglide was not for sale, it was only available for arena sponsored athletes. However, the suits today are also really expensive and even the jammers make such a difference that you are basicly forced to buy one. It feels rediculous to pay up to 350€ for the best jammers. At least in the bodysuit era you got something that was worth your money, and if you don’t count the polyurethane suits in 2009, the earlier bodysuits might have been cheaper than the suits we buy today. If the 2009 suits will not return I would at least wish to see that the rules were the same for men and women. I just can’t think of any reason why women can wear kneeskin covering almost full body when men are stuck with the jammers. In open water men and women have the same suits so why not also in the pool.
@mikeoath9541

With or without supersuits, every major competition for every sport should have athletes in the same suits/uniforms (minus colors) and they should be provided by the committee. Really all dress codes should be reformed. If women have swimsuits over their chests then men should too. Female athletes in volleyball, gymnastics, track, long jumpers and more have to wear extremely revealing uniforms that they are constantly adjusting and get points deducted for underwear/bra straps showing. They should just wear the same thing the men wear.

If I was in charge of the rules of international swim competition I would require the mist minimal swimwear. Men would wear briefs and women minimal one piece suits. The cut and fabric of each suit would have to be the same. Swim competition should be a competition of swimmers not a competition of swimsuit manufacturers. However I’d guess that such rules would likely cause a loss of interest in suit manufacturers sponsoring swimmers.

@yijuntey Год назад
I think the current rules are pretty fair through, those ankle length suits were quite ridiculous back then but after the ban it seems alright now. I mean most of those suits are commercially available too (although very expensive). But it would be like how pro cyclists would always have the best top-end bikes that would allow them to cut through the wind and ride faster than what a normal city-bike would allow us to. It doesn't really mean that they are cheating, I mean those elite swimmers that could break the wr with the supersuits, can still demolish any regular swimmers in their training briefs, but the tech suits just allow them to go even further and go beyond what the fabric suits would limit them to. Just my opinion.

Biedermann's 200m WR in the supersuit is more or less untouchable for another generation. He had a perfect day in a perfect suit, and even Phelps was a full second off the WR. I feel like the swim suit tech is kinda like carbon fibre plate running shoe technology. Allow it, but put hard limits on how much of the body they can cover, how much stack the shoe can have etc. No matter where you draw the line, someone will think you are drawing it in the wrong place, but in both cases it seems about right as it stands right now.

Women generally have higher body fat content than men, to the point that when they push off the wall or dive in, you see their legs 'ripple' from passing through the water. The 'compression' part of the suits help eliminate that extra drag. Also, women's bodies are more 3 dimensional than men. For me, it wouldn't make enough of a difference to be worth it. They don't start banning shoes from running competitions and making runners run barefoot, arent the shoes making them run faster because they're protected from the floor? You'd guess people want athletes to actually give their best, and having gear that helps them achieve that (without straight up cheating, of course) is what gets them there. Not even speaking of all the techniques or approaches that have been banned because they're hard to do or could be potentially dangerous, yet have caused people to get world records and are definitely more effective than what is allowed.... I've seen kids drop 5-6 seconds in a 100 for instance, maybe 2-3 seconds in the 50 free. I may be wrong here as this is second hand knowledge, but I was told some would even wear a buoyancy tech suit beneath a speed tech suit, basically just flying through the water. When it came down to the state competition, unfortunately a lot of kids who couldn't afford it that otherwise would have made it and placed, were beaten out. Personally I disagree with the top comment, even though I do admire the fairness they had it mind. It should be about how fast the human body is capable of swimming, I think the suits we have now are fast enough.

Slowly the complaints build but form an undercurrent and don't get the US media's attention as it didn't involve them. Once the larger teams were outclassed by not just one but TWO suits, they were added to the chorus. USA knows about it? Nope because USA still had the best. Once the US was beat, just as @ryanskogg5211 said, the USA is fuming that this has gone too far! LMBO It isn't news to the USA until it affects us.

FINA seems out of step with regard to advances in their sport compared to other sports. Consider track. The material of the track itself is no longer 'cinder'. The racing shoes runners wear have 'cleats' that grab the track optimally. Pole vaulters no longer jump with bamboo poles. Skiing? The materials that skis are made of are no longer wood with metal edges screwed in. The shape of the skis vary to optimize performance for each event. The boots are no longer leather and the cloth laces are a distant memory. Their racing suits are probably similar to the tech suits FINA banned for swimming. These - and other - innovations all enable athletes to improve their performance. Best performance on a level playing field is the objective, right? Altius, citius, fortior. (Higher, faster, stronger.) As long as all competitors have access to the latest technology - it is still the case that the swimmer is the engine and the faster one will win; the tech suit is just the wrapping. There was a time that swim suits in competitions were made of wool and, for men, covering them from just above the knee, Weissmuller

i understand for highschool and lower because of how expensive they are and how it gives the rich an advantage. but imagine the other uses, this advancement in technology could have implications outside of the swimming pool and for rich olympians, its cool to see these records broken.

how is this any different to back in the days people wearing goggles and swimming caps. sport goes hand in hand with technology and science. We apply science to our trainings, to our nutrition, to our recovery, to our performace. sport is never fair, no one trains exactly the same, no one has the exact same body, no one has the exact perfect technique.

Nope! Records from 2008 and 2009, including Michael Phelps' 400 IM world record from the Olympic Games, still stand.

Most of the supersuit records (2009) weren’t broke till about 2 or 3 years ago. The 200 im is still up there and no one is even close to it now. Fastest times last year were over a second off. Considering how much the sport has evolved in terms of technique and training in those 10 years, it just goes to show how crazy those records were and why the suits were definitely unfair.

I don’t understand why there’s a men’s suit and a woman’s suit. I think that there should be two suits and both men and women should choose which they want to wear. It sounds funny, but I’m sure women won’t choose the shorts, but they should have the option (in my world of two suits) equal to the men.

The original olympic events were performed in the nude and I imagine that even 2000+ years ago they knew certain clothes could provide an advantage. On the other hand, how cool would it be to see a fully roided out "olympics" with all the advantages modern science can provide.
