Since I am a paralyzed photographer so changing lenses can be a bit dangerous for the lens. I currently use the Tamron version and love it. The lens suits such a wide variety for a person in a wheelchair. Love the channel. I was a police officer and was shot in the line of duty. I picked up photography as a therapeutic means and fell in love with it. Thanks for all the help you give. Have a great day.

Thank you for another interesting video Nigel. You are clearly the top photographer vlogging from the UK. Why? It is because your videos are entertaining, but also very informative and educational. You actually seem to care about those who are viewing the videos. Some photographers are only concerned with themselves and fail to consider the audience. Your positive attitude and open nature distinguish you from the others. Your videos are fresh and they avoid the trap of repeating cliche after cliche. Thanks again!

I´ve just begun this photography path. 1 Year learning different things on my own only using the camera kit lens 18-55 mm. I decided to learn as much as possible with the basic gear and then go to the next level. The time has come and one of the lenses that have captured my attention the most has been the 24-70 mm because of its versatility. I´m ready for the next step with this lens and if the wallet helps me maybe a 35 or 16 mm too. Thanks, Nigel for all the knowledge and experience you have shared with us, I´ve learned much more with you rather than in the classroom, with due respect for all people who prefer this system and for all of them who have studied for more years than me in the classrooms. Cheers

This has made me remember the amazing feelings and emotions you get after making the effort to get out in the landscape early in the morning and that buzz you get when you capture some amazing images before the light then gets too harsh and you have to pack up!

I don't have the 24-70, but the 24-105 instead and I absolutely love it. I would however not call it the ultimate lens. The best lens is the one giving you the focal length you need for the particular scene. I wouldn't be without the 70-200 or my 12-24. Versatility is everything for me :)

Even though I am a Canon shooter as opposed to your Nikon equipment I think a great 24-70 lens is the best all around lens. I have traveled around the world and this is my go to lens. It is the workhorse of lenses and should be a part of every photographer's repertoire. As always your vlogs are great for both novice and advanced photographers. You make it so accessible for all levels of shooters. Thanks for all you do for the photographic community.

When I first started getting seriously into photography I had a 50mm, a 14mm and a 300mm. Thinking I had all my bases covered. These days I prefer the 24-70 range. I find the extremes have been way overdone and you can nearly do everything in that range.

I also have the Nikon Z 24-70 f4 S and Love it for landscape and travel - it's a very good lens. IMO, if I had to carry only one lens, it would be the 24-70. If I had to carry only two lenses, it would be the 24-70 and 70-200. If I had to carry only three lenses, it would be the 24-70, 70-200, and 16-35. So as you can see, the 24-70 is a must have lens for me.

Good morning Nigel, if it is an F4 zoom, I'd prefer 24-105mm F/4 than 24-70mm bearing in mind Z Mount does not have 24-105mm zoom range yet (adapt Sigma 24-105mm f/4 F mount?). When one is restricted by using one lens (zoom or prime), the creativity kicks in. You'll start thinking about what composition would work for this focal length in this given scene. Given the blea tarn superb morning scenery, I would not be a happy man if I don't have my 16-35mm with me. There is so much space you can step back before the descending begins which change the way you want to interpret the scene in your camera hence, 16-35mm would be more versatile there. When I do landscape, the ultimate tool for me would be 16-35mm F4, 70-200mm F4 and, if there's an opportunity for wildlife subject, 100-400mm. If space and weight is not an issue, I'll throw in 50mm 1.4 as well. Okay typed too much there, going to get my second coffee. Thanks for the video!

The thing I love about my canon 24-70 2.8 is the fact I can go from shooting a great looking lifestyle/portrait to shooting a vast landscape without changing my lens. When I go out camping or just don't feel like bringing a ton of gear its my one stop shop lens.

The 24-70 is an awesome lens, but I feel 24-105 is a bit more versatile. Also doubles as a travel lens. For landscapes where a little more range is needed, on either end, the 16-35 and 70-200 combo work pretty well IMO

Interesting video Nigel. I tend to avoid the mid focal lengths and use either a 16-35 or a 70-300. I am with you.. I actually skipped the 24-70 and picked up a cheap 50 f/1.8 prime to cover the middle ground that I can toss in my bag for next to no real estate (weight or bulk), or cost (cheap as chips).
@shanebrennan7856
@shanebrennan7856 5 лет назад
@@ausmarc1 that would be my thought process and, if I'm not mistaken, this is how Nigel's set up used to be on his F mount cameras. Even with the 50 in my bag I rarely reach for it and usually operate at either the wide or telephoto end of the focal spectrum.
@ausmarc1
@ausmarc1 5 лет назад
@@shanebrennan7856 Likewise.. I barely touch it and often find 35 is enough reach on the wider end.. And 70 is wide enough on the longer end. The 50 is just so light and cheap that it doesn't even matter, and you might as well just have it there. You can drop it off a cliff and it wouldn't even be a huge loss :P

I just finished reviewing the Sony A7R3 and 16-35 GM and 70-300 G, and it was indeed one of the most versatile and yet portable landscape kits I've ever tested. I can't wait to try the Nikon 14-30mm, and I'll probably procure a 70-300 AF-P with an FTZ adapter as well for that review...

@@MatthewSaville I have the AF-P 70-300 paired with my D750. It's so light and perfectly sharp for my needs. So versatile too. I plan to pick up a Z6 and pair it with this and the 14-30. My only concern is finding an L-bracket that fits my current tripod head and allows enough clearance for the FTZ adapter.

Nigel, as a guy with a severe disability you have deeply inspired me to push limits to find my creative self. This episode is so helpful because the 24-70 is so versatile and, at least for me, easy to use. I use a giant "clothespin" device to help adjust a lens. It looks crazy, but it works! This lens is light enough for me to manage. Thanks for your enthusiastic motivation.

Hi Nigel, thank you for your video. I bought a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens as my first full frame lens about three years ago. I had a cropped sensor then with a 18-55 mm kit lens and wanted the flexibility with better low light and bokeh. I have since upgraded to a full frame camera body and am now getting the full versatility of this lens, the wide angle at 24 mm through to the 70 mm. I primarily shoot landscape and this lens is my go to lens, especially when trying to save weight, however I also have a 70-300 f/4 lens for panorama and detailed shots. I also have a 17-35 mm wide angle zoom which I have found more useful for seascape shots in order to get more foreground interest, although I have used it for landscape work. However despite these other lenses, my 24-70 will always be my go to lens. It has opened a whole range of different photographic genres for me, such that I am now shooting portrait with both natural & studio lighting, family and travel. My newest addition is an 8 week old puppy called Peppa so my 24-70 is getting a lot of use! I would wholeheartedly recommend a 24-70mm lens as a first full frame lens as it opens a whole world of photography and as you say is 'an awesome all round lens'.

Nigel: congrats on reaching so many people interested in landscape photography. I don't own a 24-70 lens but I do own a 16-80 f2.8-4 nikkor lens for my D500. I have found the adjustment to the lens slow but the results are starting to develop. The wide angle I really enjoy and I find the lens light and sharp. For me the win from your video is not the tripod but the example of taking the photograph at specific focal lengths and comparing the results. Next time out I will do that and haven't really found any other tutorials or videos that have used that approach. As well, changing the height of the camera also resonated with me and I will definitely use that tip. My lens is nice and light and as I am rapidly approaching retirement light is suddenly a good thing. Never really noticed the weight of heavier lenses before. Times change. Phil Garriock

Hi Nigel - another great vlog, been watching your episodes since the Lakes course I came on with you, they always fire me up to get out there again. Also your timing is spot-on, I was pondering whether or not to fill the gap between my long and wide zooms and you’ve just inspired me to go for it and invest in the pro-quality 24-70 to ‘complete the set’. I now totally get it, for example re: the useful mild compression effect at around the 70 end. Changed my thinking from “kit lens” to “the missing landscape tool in my armoury”. Keep it up mate and hearty congrats on the 100k - amazing!

The kit I usually take out is a D810, Tamron 24-70mm G2, Zeiss 18mm and the Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR. If I had to take just one lens, it would be the 24-70mm, as like the video, it's incredibly versatile and pin sharp. Also, it spends more time on the camera than the other lenses and according to Lightroom, most of my favourite shots have been taken with it too. Great video again by the way!

I agree with the title of this video. I especially like the 24mm end of the lens. Not only is it good for the grand view that 24mm gives you but there are times you have to be close to an object by necessity. Just this morning I was out shooting in the first snow of the year here in St. George, UT and used the 24mm end of my Sony lens so I could get the right perspective of a lone light pole against a path leading into the bushes. You can also make something on the small side take on a bit of grandeur when there's nothing to give you scale. So a small waterfall in becomes much larger seeming to the viewer of the image. Then there are times you can shoot at 24mm and crop to a panorama for a different look. And not just panorama's but shooting long narrow vertical subjects like a lone giant redwood or a slot canyon. The 70mm end of the lens I like to use to isolate a detail like ice crystals, or like I used this morning, to isolate a cactus capped with a couple inches of snow. It can be used as a portrait lens when you're feeling burned out on landscapes. :o) If I were limited to packing light and carrying only one smallish lens then the 24-70mm f2.8 would be my lens of choice. Other lenses like the 24-105 are very nice also but can be too big, especially when paired with a smaller body camera like a Sony A6500. That lens makes the combo front too heavy for me, even when sued with the bigger A7RMk2.

Great video Nigel! The 24-70mm lens is definitely an exceptional lens. I have the ef 24-70mm 2.8L II and it's sharp enough to replace any/all primes within that range, even wide open. It's fast enough to shoot indoor and even night photography! And most importantly, it spans 3 different focal ranges, wide, standard, short-telephoto. It's the do everything lens and it's the lens that I bring when I don't know what to expect when out shooting because of it's versatility. Keep up the great work!

As an intermediate, well just past beginner, I find my Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 so versatile that I effectively stick with this lens for most of my photography. I subscribed to your channel as I enjoy your teaching style and find your advice very easy to absorb. Thank you and keep up the great work.

I love the 24-70mm lens. Mine is paired with a Pentax K-1 Mll. It’s my go to for most of my landscape photos. I shoot seascapes and marshes and haven’t found a more versatile focal length range. It handles plants and flowers equally as well. A must have lens!

I have started to use my Fuji 16-55mm a lot more for landscapes, my initial hesitation towards this lens had nothing to do with the lens itself but more of my lack of "skill" when it came to composition and how to properly frame my shots. I am very thankful for channels like yours, Andy Mumford and Thomas Heaton for all the knowledge you share about landscapes and the joy that you bring to taking pictures. The 10-24, 16-55 and 50-140 are the three lenses I find are most suited to my photography style but also just to be able to fill the gap between all of ranges I would like to have. If the 8-16mm wasn't so expensive I would like to look into that one day as well. But I will say the 16-55 is the most used lens that I own. Thanks for all your great work and more importantly sharing it with all of us.

Great insight as always Nigel. It may sound counter intuitive but I think the 24-70 is at it's most useful when accompanied by (either or both of) a ~16-35 and 70-200. That being said my 24-70 lives on my camera and is always packed away as such. When I need to get the camera out for a quick shot the 24-70 is the lens that will get you that shot 99% of the time. If I was going walk about and could take only one lens then the 24-70 gives you that range.

Nice demonstration of what 24-70mm can do! I recently started serious photography, and initially got 16-35mm f/2.8 lens for my Sony A7R-III. But when I was shooting in SF, I realized 35mm is still too wide for what I wanted to capture. I got 24-70mm f/2.8, and have been using way more frequently than 16-35mm even for landscapes. I especially love, as you mentioned in the video, the ability to shoot both wide angle and more focused long lens shots without changing the lens. Especially during golden hours and sunrise/sunset situations where the light is constantly changing, being able to change the focal length so fast allowed me to capture the moments I could not otherwise capture. I sometimes wishes though my 24-70mm was 24-85mm because for whatever reason Sony's 70mm isn't as magnified as Nikon/Canon's.

The 24-70 is the perfect middle lens between the ultra-wide and a really good long telephoto. Great video, have a new appreciation for using it in my landscape shots and pulling in a bit closer at times than my typical wide shots.

Hi Nigel, I agree with you totally re the 24 -70mm for Landscape it is very versatile. the 24 - 105mm is a great travel lens. I also like my 70-200mm for Landscape for picking out areas and condensing the scene.

I think you are right. I have used my 28 - 70 lens for years and I joyed it a lot. It was my go to lens. I recently bought the 18 - 200 Nikon lens to give me a little more focal length without having to change to me larger zoom and I find it can do most everything I want. Love your channel and the insights you give as well as your beautiful fotos. Thanks for sharing with us. Cheers

Nigel, I use a 17-70 APS-C lens on my Nikon D5600. It gives the equivalent range as 24-70 full frame, plus a bit more. It was my first lens purchase based on your previous videos featuring the 24-70. I love the viewing options it gives me. Can hardly wait for your Master Class. More detailed info will be very useful.

Another great video that touches all the bases for me. I have the D810 and D700 etc. and use the 24 - 70 as my serious” lenses and the 28 - 300 on the other if I need more reach or my “carry around” option. I agree that the weight is a consideration, but the Z7 mirrorless changes all of that now. The size and weight of the 24 - 70 native lens mounted to the Z7 is a game changer. I love the focal range for 90% of my shots and will use the 105mm, 50mm 1.4, 24 2.8, 10.5 mm 2.8 fisheye for specialty shot and convenience, as required. So, I think in terms of 24 - 70 mm and have to let the scene or circumstances dictate changing to something else. I will be getting the Z7 sometime this year. Keep the great. Intent coming...we all love it and are thirsty for more!

24-70mm is the perfect focal range for landscape because it is so dynamic. I am currently using a 35mm prime to teach myself how to “zoom with my feet” and improve my composition. 24-70mm will certainly be my next landscape lens. Love your videos and insta! Thank you!

I consider myself an intermediate photographer. I'm shooting Nikon D3200 with the hope of upgrading in the future. I have been buying old glass so that I can experience wide angle lenses at an affordable price. At the moment I have 50 mm, 135 mm and the 18 - 55mm that came with the camera. I think the 24 - 70mm would be an ideal lens to have on my camera giving me more range options without having to change lens. Maybe I can get one when I upgrade. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I try to watch your videos each day. Got to learn something everyday and then go out and apply.

The 24-70 is the only lens I bring when I need to travel light, either for travel, for short sunday walks or when I go trekking/cross-country skiing with a heavy backpack up in the mountains. If I have extra room for more equipment I either take a 20mm or a 14-30mm to complement it. Looking forward to the release of a new «lightweight» Z 14-30mm later this spring - and to more of your excellent video tutorials.

Love, love, love the 24-70 f4 S lens. This video made me think of the three areas one can use this lens with very good results; right around 50 mm, the great wide around 24 mm and around slight tele at 70 mm. So this is an excellent lens that does it all. And, ohhh how sharp and clean and light. Also love your videos since way back before you got the Z7. Your vlogs about why you switched to mirrorless and why the Z7, were instrumental in me thinking about it, and eventually taking the same road. I did shoot Canon for 19 years. So, thank you, Nigel, on all fronts. P.S. your images from Iceland are just out of this world. As someone would say, "it doesn't get any better that that"

I like to think like a cinematographer when I go to a place to shoot. Wide, medium, close up, telling a “story” that has those different dimensions, sometimes just zooming down into detail from the wider orienting landscape shots, sometimes showing people and action or detail in the wider context. 24-70 covers something of a classic range for this. I suppose that’s why it’s the standard zoom. Gives you the whole world, really, in one lens.

I have the 24-105mm but it covers the 24-70mm focal length and right now it’s all I use for my landscape photography. I love how the long end compresses perspective and draws you into the scene and 24mm is just wide enough to open up the wilderness. Brilliant video / all I need now is a much better tripod - fingers, toes and everything crossed. Thank you for the great content and keep up the incredible work.

Cracking all purpose lens. I find when I have trips out when I want to do a mix of landscape and portrait photography there is a focal length within that range to take most compositions for both genre. It's a must have in any camera bag, part of the holy trinity of lenses between a 70-200 and a 16-35.

Hi Nigel I have both the Fuji X-T3 and X-H1 after moving from Canon. Like you I have a fair selection of Fuji lens but the 12mm - 55mm (24mm - 70mm) equivalent is by far the most used of my lenses. At f2.8 it is so versatile and I love it. I'm so pleased for you that you are making the tutorial videos and I for one will look forward to the launch. The 24-70 is my ''safe'' zone, no matter what kind of picture I'm about to take, I always feel like I can use this lens and I'll have the focal range I need. It is shap and versatile and I rarely take it off my camera because in landscape photography I never felt the need for something wider. (also because it's expensive) Great video as always Nigel !

The AF-S 24-70 is my favourite lens. I try to use the 14-24 and the 70-200, but the 24-70 wins most of the day, and often used with the Benro FH100M2 filterholder/filters. In the analog days I used to bring 28, 50 and 105 in the bag - and they saved the day like the 24-70 do today.

I shoot with a crop sensor and a 17-50 lens, so it's kind of like the equivalent on full frame as for focal length.. I personally find it very versatile, for many genres, varying from street to portraits, and also cityscapes and landscapes of course. And I agree with you, I believe is a must have lens in your bag when you want to travel light and still be able to get different types of shots
