Dr. Terry Wahls and I are discussing why the AIP diet doesn't work for most autoimmune conditions-and what does.
Tune in to hear why the AIP diet falls short and which diet is a better (and easier) starting point.

Listen in to my first podcast conversation with Dr. Terry Wahls where we discuss her extremely effective (and less restrictive) protocol for autoimmunity: drruscio.com/a-nutrient-dense-paleo-diet-for-autoimmunity/

The AIP has worked for me! For 7 years now it has managed my RA and other issues. I’m no longer in 9 medications. I have my life back. I was gluten free and dairy free for 5 years prior to the AIP with very little improvement and the RA showed up in that time as well. So I respectfully disagree.

I'm glad it worked for you! I do find it's a little more restrictive than most people need, but that doesn't mean it doesn't ever work. :)

Agreed they only spoke about monitoring HBA1C. I had hashimotos for 22yrs I'm 28 now been on low carb diet and slowly got rid of dairy I'm still slowly transitioning so yes it take a slow way so you give your body the space to adjust from all the years of bad diet that was only killing you inside out. I'll be moving to AIP by December started cutting out tomatoes and few night shades slowly ... This works

So what were the foods you took out that worked if you had already removed gluten and dairy? All nuts, seeds? Eggs ? and all grains ? I find when I try and do AIP I feel terrible and get very stressed b'cos I feel so bad on it, I go back to eggs and rice to get some energy.

I've joined many AIP groups, and it works for the vast majority of people. It was quite rare to find someone whose health did not improve on AIP. I love terry wahls, and I greatly respect her research, but I'm surprised she didn't include nightshades in her level one. Most people I know with autoimmune issues don't tolerate gluten or nightshades. The AIP diet is only meant to be temporary. It's basically a science experiment that you do on yourselves to figure out what you do and don't tolerate. For me, going full AIP was necessary because I found out I dont tolerate nightshades, nuts, seeds, or legumes, but I was surprised to find out I tolerate dairy and gluten-free grains just fine.

@@idarkboost nightshades and gluten can actually disable me because they make my fibromyalgia flare up really bad. When I was in the strict elimination phase, I just ate meat (usually homemade nightshade-free sausage), fruit, and veggies for breakfast. They also make aip compliant yogurt and cereal. ha ha no. I never would've recovered my health if I'd done a more lenient autoimmune protocol. So many health care practitioners putting their own spin on AIP to make some $$$$$ but Dr. Ballantyne sets the gold standard, period!

Sadly it took me too long to figure out I was Insulin Resistant and how carbs even "healthy" gluten free carbs were making me sick ie rice, ie any processed 'healthy' carbs etc....

The guy said AIP is to restrictive for long term 😂 makes no sense you're doing everything in life long term if it helps you feel better . Then the lady said eliminate for six months then reintroduce dairy eggs etc. Why if you feel better not eating a certain food why would you reintroduce it when you already know it does not benefit your good health they both are 2 people I won't listen to
@sundragon13
@sundragon13 7 месяцев назад
@@jasonj7755 also, the elimination phase of AIP is not even meant to be long term, so saying that it's too restrictive for long term is not a valid argument and shows that he's misunderstanding AIP
@ayoungethan
@ayoungethan 6 месяцев назад
@@jasonj7755 because bodies aren't machines and can heal, and nutritional needs evolve over time. With adequate space and support to heal (eg immune syst re-regulation, restoration of gut microbiome, mucosal lining, brush lining and membrane, mitochondrial health, etc), people can achieve a much less restrictive diet, which helps both socially and to add more diversity to the microbiome and nutritional intake

This video supports my reasoning for not seeing allopathic practitioners. I do not trust these doctors who never recommend a lifestyle and diet change or deny that these two things do wonders for us with autoimmune conditions. Paleo works WONDERS for my autoimmune condition, ankylosing spondylitis. This guy should really reconsider before making a silly video like this. How pathetic.

AIP wasn't restrictive enough for me, coconut was also inflammatory. Now after several years I can do most nuts and seeds, grains and eggs in careful moderation (ie, they are tolerated). Nightshades are still a problem. Intermittent fasting and anaerobic physical activity has been really important, too in helping my body repair and re-regulate.
@ayoungethan

Oh i can also tolerate raw/fermented A2 dairy now, too (A1 is a no go). So definitely not AIP anymore but it still (in)forms the core of my diet.

Wahls level 1: no gluten, dairy or eggs, .Wahls paleo : add fermented foods, organ meats and restrict carbs,. Elimination diet : no grains ,legumes or nightshades .People with auto immune disease have higher rates of insulin resistance with diabetes and should be put on low carb protocol .

Somehow AIP was not that effective in my case. When I adopted Intermittent fasting only 2 meals, eventhough I was using millets I see my anti ccp went down automatically. Still don't know how is that working. AiP is very restrictive and difficult to sustain for a long term but gluten free and diary free and processed foods free always required for autoimmune conditions I guess.
@sundragon13
@sundragon13 7 месяцев назад
Have you tried nightshade free? For a lot of people gluten and nightshades are the two most disease triggering foods
@ayoungethan
@ayoungethan 6 месяцев назад
Intermittent fasting works by giving the body a clear "rest digest recover" (parasympathetic) period to fully digest and assimilate food, experience, etc. The opposite is chronic snacking which keeps the body in a chronic sympathetic autonomic nervous state. Nutrient absorption (digestive efficacy) plummets. Snacks are usually high calorie low nutrient density. Post-prandial stress accrues and mitochondrial function atrophies. Blood sugar dysregulates. I also generally stop eating at least 6hrs before bed, get way better sleep quality as a result. I had to restore mitochondrial function first, also using anaerobic physical activity to promote human growth factor for tissue repair, which also helped prevent chronic stress (chronic sympathetic autonomic state) by completing stress cycles.

First time I've felt clear headed, not depressed, calm gut from going on the AIP. Weight is finally shifting. It's really a lectin free diet like Dr Gundry recommends but I'm finding no grains or legumes is that step further I required. I'd be happy to stay on it long term because I feel amazing. New lease on life

I tried the AIP diet and it made me a thousand times worse. I was vegan, raw til 4, and doing fantastic until some surgeries and temporary ostomy forced me back into a mainstream diet, adding in only a little eggs, meat and some cheese. I packed on the pounds and started getting sick. Adding all that back in destroyed my gut which I had healed on Raw til 4. So I decided to try the AIP diet which added even more meat and took away the healthy sugars I needed and I ended up not only with RA to add to my existing autoimmune issues but also was hit hard with what is most likely Stiff Person Syndrome. It got so bad I seriously thought I was going to die at one point. It’s been a couple years and I’m still struggling with eating and trying to heal my gut. Meat makes me so very sick. It’s all just so very frustrating.

@sundragon13
@sundragon13 7 месяцев назад
That's interesting. I was exactly the other way around. I literally almost died on a vegan diet because I have malabsorption problems. Veganism also DESTROYED my gut quite severely. AIP restored my health and put my fibromyalgia into remission. For me AIP is not a meat heavy diet. I eat mostly vegetables. I'm sure everyone is different, but I'm curious: were you eating pasture-raised meat? Because factory farmed meat makes me sick, but I tolerate pasture-raised meat really well.
@sundragon13
@sundragon13 7 месяцев назад
Also, what healthy sugars did AIP take away? Because AIP is not supposed to take away healthy sugars or cut carbs. The most common AIP mistake that I see over and over again is that when people cut out grains, they don't replace them with AIP compliant carbs. When I was in the strict elimination phase, I ate lots of flat bread, cassava, taro root, sweet potatoes, plantains, winter squash, carrots, beets, and lots of fruit. There is no shortage of healthy sugars/carbs/starches on an AIP diet.
@sundragon13
@sundragon13 7 месяцев назад
Oh, and I just thought of one more thing that may be helpful. Since you've tried so many different diets without success, maybe that's not the root problem for you. Maybe nervous system dysregulation is making you sick. Are you familiar with the ACE study? It's a study on how childhood trauma increases the risk of chronic illness. Basically, when you're chronically stuck in fight or flight mode, your digestion is turned off and all kinds of other things go wrong in the body. Another thing that could make you sick is exposure to toxins (like mold, harsh chemicals, or heavy metals). Nutritional deficiencies (even in a person who eats super healthy) can also make a person sick. There are many different possible root causes for chronic illness, and elimination diets do not address many of these causes. Anyway, I know how frustrating it is to have a chronic illess that doesn't respond well to the things that seem to work for everyone else (that's how my endo is I can manage my fibro through diet but my endo doesn't care what I eat 🥴). My suggestions may or may not work for you, but I hope you find something that does work for you!
@ayoungethan

I'm sorry you are struggling but it also sounds like you have a significant misunderstanding of AIP, what it is and isn't. I would pick up a copy of The Paleo Approach (Sarah Ballantyne, she has since distanced herself from the Paleo moniker due to so many paleo people spewing dogma but the book is still super relevant) to better understand the pathophysiology and associated diet and lifestyle intervention opportunities. Good luck regardless!
