The Apollo bubble helmet is perhaps the most iconic helmet any astronaut has ever worn, why would it ever be retired? Well just as many important decisions NASA makes, it came down to crew safety.

Nice! Here's a little trivia: The lunar gloves were more or less identical to the black IVA (intravehicular activity) gloves we see them wear when they walk out to the pad, but it had additional layers of chromel R (and also beta cloth) which gave them the familiar grey appearance (at least on the earlier missions, they added extra layers of beta cloth on the later missions which made them appear more white than grey). Apollo 7 was the ONLY mission where the astronauts (partially) wore the A7L EMU for re-entry. They ditched the gloves and helmets due to them having head colds, because they wanted to be able to use the valsalva maneuver during the descent to avoid having their ear drums burst. All the other re-entries done on the following flights were done in shirtsleeves (those white garments that you usually see them wear inside the spacecraft).

The suit itself was created by Playtex. and all 10 layers stitched by ladies sitting at sewing machines. In the competition for lunar suits, the big aerospace companies couldn't get it right, either too bulky, heavy, or 'balloony.' Playtex demonstrated theirs by playing football in it.

I really wish NASA would have stayed with that IVA/EVA suit design and just upgraded them over the years. If there is anything we can learn from the Russians is that if that it works don’t change it.
@INeedMoreSpace
@INeedMoreSpace 3 года назад
The IVA/EVA combo presented a few issues. For one the weighed more and were impossible to put on by yourself. IVA suits today allow a crew member to don them on their own, have less mass, and are overall safer.

The Apollo EMU was very cumbersome, and they lacked mobility. It was difficult to walk on the moon with them, as well as gathering samples etc, so they are designing a new suit which will give them improved mobility compared to the A7L/A7LB EMU.

@philwaters9751
@philwaters9751 2 года назад
Thanks bud. I enjoyed that. It's always pros and cons ain't it eh? I like the idea that when in the Command Module with no visor assembly the peripheral vista was much improved, with the least weight, complexity and engineering. I'm thinking also that emergency splashdowns are even more dangerous if you can open your visor and flood your suit , and with so much riding on the Apollo Missions, and with various levels of management distrust, it may have been the 'keep it as simple as possible' option that won any arguments. It will be interesting to see how longer duration moon missions deal with the dust issue. Minimizing the number and complexity of seals that need inspecting, cleaning and/or replacing may well become a limiting factor to the number of EVA cycles that a given mission can accomplish without the need to 'dry-dock' and fully service a suit.

Thanks, for some reason I thought EVA suits for Apollo were different from the ones used for launch/landing. And more than once I wondered where did they store it. So, now it makes sense. They probably used different gloves and footware for lunar walks, though. Along with bubble protection.
@INeedMoreSpace
@INeedMoreSpace 3 года назад
yes they had separate IVA/EVA gloves but for lunar EVA they just had a boot covering they would put over their feet. On earlier missions, the bubble did not have an additional layer of protection. now on ISS, the bubble does have one extra transparent layer for added protection but it's not sealed.

@alexprokhorov407
@alexprokhorov407 3 года назад
@@INeedMoreSpace one more question. I mean, they had some environmental issues, like cold temperatures and potential decompression. Why didn't they use those suites on 13? Because of power shortage, and the crew would be worse off? Because it needs to be powered at all times? Or plain mobility?
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa 3 года назад
@@alexprokhorov407 A couple of reasons. The suits need "power" in the sense that the environmental control system in the Command Module must pump air through the suit constantly because the air is also used to cool the astronauts (they didn't wear the liquid cooling garments inside the command module, and also, the Command Module Pilot did not have a liquid cooling garment at all) whilst wearing them in the command module. Jim Lovell said that they thought about donning them (as they had doffed them shortly after docking with the Lunar Module as per the flight plan), but they decided against it because since they wouldn't be hooked up to the spacecraft, they'd just start sweating and that would have defeated the purpose to wear them in the first place. They did however (Lovell and Haise) wear their lunar boots for extra warmth, Swigert of course, did not have a pair of lunar boots so he had to manage without them.

It wasn't clear to me why anyone would want to remove the helmet when the air pressure is lower outside.
@INeedMoreSpace
@INeedMoreSpace 3 года назад
suit pressure is greater than 1 atmosphere so if you were at sea level you wouldnt be able to remove it
@Chris-Workshop
@Chris-Workshop 3 года назад
@@INeedMoreSpace i still dont undertand, why would you want to quickly remove your helmet in an emergency? also wasnt the suit pressure during apollo EVAs around 0.2 bar pure o2? also even if you have a different helmet design you never would want to open a visor when there is a pressure difference between inside the suit and outside the suit. so every spacesuit has releave valves.. so i dont get the whole point 🤔
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa 3 года назад
@@INeedMoreSpace No, the suits were pressurized to 3.5 psi during an EVA, the spacecraft atmosphere was 16.9 psi (oxygen/nitrogen)(one atmosphere) for launch, but it was purged during the ascent and settled at 5.5 psi sometime around S-II ignition. This is why they had to wear the suits "fully sealed" before & during launch as it served as the pre-breathing routine in anticipation for the 5.5 psi cabin atmosphere they'd be exposed to once they removed their helmets after orbital insertion. If they hadn't done that, they'd get the bends like a scubadiver.
