Assassin's Creed's one and only live-action movie debuted in 2016 and was met with some negative feedback to say the least. I decided to rewatch the Assassin's Creed Movie in 2023 and look back on why the film failed and what it could have done better. And even though this film was a failure in terms of ratings and box office performance, I believe it truly wasn't all that bad...

I think I'd have ditched the modern day entirely. Set it up like the books and tell a fully fleshed story in a historical setting, let audiences get attached to Aguilar and the ancestor memories, then (and it could even be a post credits scene) have Cal wake up in the Animus at the end to set up a sequel.
@TehxDraGz
@TehxDraGz 9 месяцев назад
Exactly what I was thinking, but only issue I can probably see is that in the games, the subject using the animus can’t stay in it for too long or they will suffer the bleeding effect(if it’s just slightly too long) or even have their minds split(if it’s way too long). So going through an entire life sequence of Aguilar would have killed Cal essentially 😂. Please correct me if I’m wrong though, just what I thought about

@@TehxDraGz I agree, but I think you could perhaps circumnavigate that in two ways. Either Aguilar takes periodic 'rests' during the movie's runtime leading to a dream-like or nightmare sequence of things happening in the modern day, or you do it the way AC1 did with about five minutes of disorientation at the beginning, a modern day section at the beginning then spend time dipping in and out of the Animus. Newer models allow subjects to spend longer times in there, just have the Animus be less invasive like Helix or something.

That's why clever film makers build a point the protagonist must pass, and then follow it with a worthy montage along with some narration to move he story past those long game parts.

Doing a movie based on Shao Jun would not only be easy one for Ubisoft, but also the the most obvious choice. She has plenty of source material to work from. Bring back Michelle Lin and minimize the modern day setting, if not outright remove it completely.

I super loved this movie, I saw it in the theatre and when he fully connects with the animus I found myself in tears. Having watched it with people who did not know the lore, I could tell that the modern day part of the story was necessary for them to understand the time travel of it. And from the end of the movie, it is clear that they wanted to make more. I think they went heavy on modern day to draw in more people who do not know yet the franchise - which is the case with most adaptations. But it was interesting to listen to this video, I enjoy a good discussion, I also don't think it helps to hate on it in any way, there billions of far worse adaptations out there.

I think the main fault of this film, besides the “childish” rating, is the fact that in a film based on the Assassin's Creed franchise, the action doesn't take place long enough in the past. My personal opinion is that they should have made a film where the action took place entirely in the past, then ended the film with Michael Fassbender's character abruptly waking up in the present, discovering that he is inside the Animus and not in a dream.

As someone that discovered the Assassin's Creed franchise when I was 9-10 years old (I'm 19 now) with the first contact with the franchise being Unity I agree 100% with you the movie wasn't horrible but it wasn't definitely a masterpiece it was acceptable but they surely wasted a lot of potential focusing mostly on the modern day because as you said what most of us fans love about Assassin's Creed is the ancestors story seeing the memories of those past events and they could have found a way to explain a lot of important things about the lore to the people that don't know the franchise without relying 100% percent on Callum asking things to other people in the present. Basically the conclusion I get is that what made the movie fail was not just the fact it was released at a time were people were very sceptical when movie adaptations of video games were released because most of them are horrible but also the fact that it looks like they didn't plan things correctly and wasted good characters and potential but personally I didn't hate the movie I actually liked it.

Resuming even though the story is not one of the best and the fact that the game got overshadowed due to the amount of bugs it had when it released the game had a reasonably good history and a good protagonist and it's parkour is the best of the saga.

"Hey, you know how all of the Assassins can parkour? Let's make them parkour in the movie because it's in the games. Yeah, it serves absolutely no storytelling purpose, but you can do it in the game so we need parkoooour!" That's what I imagine the production of this movie sounded like behind the scenes, and it's why it's terrible. It took a Sonic the Hedgehog movie (of all things) to teach the industry that to make a movie adaptation of a video game work, you have to make a movie adaptation that's like a movie, and not a movie that's like a video game. The AC movie (like pretty much every other video game movie adaptation of the time) didn't understand the distinction between the two mediums, and crumpled before filming began as a result.

I think the biggest flaw for this movie is that they're trying to explain everything. I don't blame em for trying to get as many people interested as possible, but no matter what, every single fan was going to be there. They're taking something that already has an audience, and trying to make another audience, which is just a silly move and a recipe to lose the support they were already going to have.

We could knit pick ANY film to death if we truly wanted, and I've seen a lot of people even bitch about the effects in this one. How? It's visually stunning. Nobody understands how the critic score even works lol. I believe a 6/10 or 60% is the minimum needed for a critic to be counted as "recommending" the movie and 18% means that just under 1 in 5 would give it a 60% score. If 4/5 gave it a 59% or lower, it's not recommended. So it's just not recommended. Idk though, I just googled it and found something else lmao. Which just proves my point. People need to ignore RT and find someone with similar tastes, like Jeremy Jahns for me personally, and just watch those reviews. If he says it's good or awesometacular and I was on the fence, I'd probably like the movie. If he says it's bad, I wouldn't. Works for me.

Tbh I really didn’t like this movie , I thought the pacing was all over the place , and the story wasn’t as engaging as the games are. I’d disagree and agree wit you to the action scenes , I agree that they are the best part of the movie , but I also think the quick cuts of editing and multiple camera angle switches was too jarring a lot of the time and since it was pg-13 it couldn’t go to the fullest extent of violence like in the games with the M rating. I also thought the characters were very forgettable and boring tbh I don’t remember any of their names except Cal , but even wit Micheal Fassbenders good performance, the writing they gave him and the characters were very lackluster and made me not really care about them. As in the games we get attached to the characters cuz of the great writing and story building. It’s also a length problem they should’ve made this into at least a 2 part movie or tv show like Netflix is doing , cuz the assassins creed lore and story has ALOT of info that needs proper time to be established so it doesn’t come across as super rushed and messy like this movie. All in all this movie wasn’t good at all , there were some hints of potential here and there but overall just not a fun experience imo. Assassin creed has WAY too much content to be a movie it should be a show and honestly they can make shows on already established characters like Arno or Edward or bayek to see how they’re lives went after the game cuz we still don’t know how their stories go , and it could make for a great show if done right and the proper writing and actors and directors.

I think Assassin's Creed has too many layers for a two hour movie: historical plot, modern day plot, Templars, Assassins, Abstergo, etc. The books basically stick fully to the historical setting, which I think would've been the way to go for the movie. A television series would give them a better opportunity to dive into all aspects of an Assassin's Creed storyline, so hopefully the Netflix one comes to fruition. I did think it was cool how they tied this movie to AC Origins with the Aguilar skin, and revealing that Layla helped design the Animus from the movie. Also, Cal is Arno's descendant which, as an Arno fan, I like the implication of.
@alexandrem798
@alexandrem798 9 месяцев назад
Exactly. People underestimate the hardships of making a satisfactory AC movie, considering everything it has to achieve within a 2~2.5 hour runtime: introducing a main character from the present day timeline, introducing a main character from the past, introducing the millenia long Assassins/Templars conflict, introducing the Animus technology, introducing the Pieces of Eden, all the while telling character arcs for both the present day MC and history MC that stand on their own. Considering all this, I think Justin Kurzel's film is okay. Not great but not terrible either. I especially like the soundtrack which elevates a lot of scenes. Ultimately what was really proven is that a movie is not a suitable format for Assassin's Creed.

However the writing and character building is so pisspoor it just fails for both ac fans and regular movie goers, which is a shame because as I said: the premise of ac is badass. Even to haters of the franchise. I remember when it was announced everyone was preaching how this was the movie that would break the videogame-movie adaptation curse and to quote Obi-Wan: it ultimately became the very thing it swore to destroy.

The main reason it didn't resonate with fans was because of the History bit. Like you said, many of us play these games to immerse ourselves in historical places as an assassin. The modern day plot is usually like a subplot where most people never even log out of the animus unless the game needs you to. The movie gave the most appealing thing ,The past, the least amount of screen time and gave the "subplot" the most screentime.

The biggest issue I had with the movie was how rushed it felt in the second half. Cal joining the assassins felt forced, the rebellion at Abstergo happens with an assassin dying and the moment is treated like a big deal but we didn't really know the guy that much, and I felt the Templars found the Apple of Eden too quickly while in the video games it took them longer. Either the movie needed a longer runtime or be split into two movies. I also agree there wasn't much focus on the Animus as there should have been. I did enjoy seeing Cal going through the bleeding effect and the setting and action scenes were great, besides being fast paced. Also Sophia being hinted at being an assassin was a neat reveal and would have been interesting to see play out. Lastly, now learning the actor that played Mad Eye Moody was in this movie is cool to hear about.

I think the AC movie sort of reveals the inherent issues with AC as a franchise-it’s story is consistently the weakest aspect of the franchise. The modern day element is awful, the bland “templars VS assassins” story isn’t nearly as cool as it thinks it is and the whole animus concept is awful in the games already (why am I playing a game about a guy in a simulation? Just put the game IN the time period) Assassins creed’s strength is its interactive simulations of real world time periods. Being able to walk around renaissance-era Italy or the golden age of piracy. Nobody outside of AC fans cares about anything other than the gameplay fantasy of the time periods in each game…. So making a movie is an awful idea conceptually since it removes the only truly great part of the series-the interactivity. You’re stuck with the dull melodrama of the Templars and Assassins, the dumb animus idea, the eyerollingly boring apple of Eden stuff, etc It’s sort of like the Halo TV show which put way too much focus on aspects of the IP that are sorta the weakest part of Halo (spartans being sad/emotional)

I do hope they try again with a cinematic AC adaptation, as AC games *almost* always have the most beautiful stories and worlds. Maybe they could use the "bleeding effect" to make scenes that tie in with both the past and present. Showing a small cut to the present setting up a timeline allowing the viewer to infer what's in-between each cut. Allowing a present day story whist focusing on the (much more wanted) past.

18% on Rotten Tomatoes means only 18% of critics gave it a positive review, not that they gave it a 1,8 out of 10 rating. The average reting on Rotten Tomatoes is actually 4 out of 10!

Simple, it tried to have everything when it could have just had Aguilar's story. Much like how Arcane did it, it didnt go for a plot that relies on easter eggs and everything nostalgia bait on LoL. Instead it focused on telling compelling stories with compelling characters.

If only there had been a chance for another AC movie. It'd be nice if the story was grounded solely on the past, mostly focused on the protagonist will a less modern day reference i know that its going off the theme but an Assassin's Creed story focused on the Assassin and his story and battle itself would be pretty interesting.

All they had to do was recreate the first game.. and they would have a movie franchise.. they could take liberties or even focus on new characters as long as they stuck to the story.... It felt more like bad fanfiction
@Aussiemarco
@Aussiemarco 2 месяца назад
I’m one of the movie audience who has never played AC, but I’ve known of the games existence from day 1. I expected it to be 90% historical setting and was disappointed when it wasn’t. I got this impression from all the game advertising I’ve seen over the years and looking at the game boxes in shops for years. As a movie, there were two problems for me - the bad writing and it took itself WAY too seriously, like they thought they were making high art when they were making a sci-fi game movie. The worst thing about it for me was the final 15 minutes. Completely underwhelming and the realisation this entire movie was just a set up for more movies to come (which never happened.) Once upon a time movies were made to be self-contained stories. There was a start, a middle and an end. “A New Hope” was called “Star Wars” and was made to be a single, one-off movie. Only when it was such a global phenomenon did Lucas conceive a whole series of movies. Today, movies are made to be introductions to series, which makes them a disappointment in the end, and a flop. Because they’re a flop, others in the projected series don’t get made. The original movie eventually disappears and is forgotten about. AC is one of those movies.
@obsidianwarrior5580
@obsidianwarrior5580 9 месяцев назад
Like some others have said, AC simply has too big of a plot to reasonably make into a movie. Have to deal with multiple assassination targets including each individual build up and a Grandmaster to top it off. A past storyline that's also able to tell a good character rich story. A modern day plot that literally introduces a whole new element and stuff regarding pieces of eden and the Isu. It just doesn't work as a movie.
@TheNissandd
@TheNissandd 9 месяцев назад
real problem is assassins creed can never fit inside even a 4 hour movie. there is too much lore to be explained. a tv series would be the perfect choice for this i mean. if you look at it there are, ´´THE ISU, FRUIT OF EDEN, ASSASSINS, TEMPLARS, MODERN DAY, ANIMUS, THE HISTORICAL LOCATION, THE MODERN DAY ASSASSIN´S/TEMPLARS and many more. now the mistake the movie made was making a blend of aaaaaall of these inside a 2 hour + movie and of course it wont make sense. its like me trying to explain a toddler what 18 years of school is. a tv series is the way to go

I think this could've been a great modern day Assassin's Creed story since that's what the movie mostly focuses on anyway and the games have been lacking a good arc since Desmond. It also would have been a fresh perspective that we don't see from the games at all really, Assassins actually taking the fight to the Templars in the present day.

From what I understood, they were planning to make a trilogy hence the multiple unexplained components. Disney bought 21st Century Fox and sacked the plans because of the "negative" reception. I's watched it 3 times and I am pissed that the plan was canceled. I play the games too. I agree that it was ridiculous that it had a disgustingly low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of the times Rotten Tomatoes rate good or acceptable movies badly but the audience gives the movies high ratings. The AC movie is just a standalone movie now. I hope someone gives it a chance for the plans to be revived.

It shouldn't have failed. It was atleast faithful to the source material and still tried something new. Actors were absolute beasts. Also, consider how game movies mostly fail. Hence, this movie is good. Just my opinion.

Tbh I really loved the film it was definitely an Assassin's Creed movie it depicted the game pretty well in comparison to all other video game adaptations and this movie has got to be the best one imo. It was no means a perfect ac movie but it did an amazing job cramming the lore of ac in a 90 minute runtime which also explains the sacrifices the movie took due to a very small runtime but it did a pretty good job especially with the modern sequences they established great world building in the film and it was supposed to be fleshed out by a sequel i do agree with some disappointed with the film for focusing too much on the present day but i think it was necessary for the movie and to this day i still watch this film and think about the what could've beens if this movie franchise went on but i'm glad everything in the film was canon plus maybe we can still see callum's story continue with the netflix acquisition.

I think it just hit a bad compromise between new viewers and AC veterans. If you’re an AC veteran then stuff like completely changing how the Animus works felt jarring, and all the little easter eggs couldn’t make up for that. If you were a new viewer then you didn’t care about the changes, but you always felt like you were missing context only found in the games. In the end everyone just ends up more frustrated than entertained. They needed to more firmly fall on one side or the other, either make a love letter to the big fans or make something for everyone, they tried to split the difference and it just didn’t work out very well.

Also I think that the directors forgot that the whole Desmond part of the story that was focused mostly on modern time is the part fans liked the least 😅😅😅 probably would've been for the best to axe the whole modern world animus simulation part of the story and kept it set on the setting the assassin's were in

I used to love the games and when i first watched this movie i thought it was trash, had way too much respect for the first maybe 5 AC games, but now i think the newer games are incredibly mid, and i found the movie very enjoyable so i suppose the games could of had an impact on the perception of the movie goers back then..

This is the only movie I have ever walked out of. It should have been a fun swashbuckling action adventure fill. In the vein as Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Mask Of Zorro, The Three Musketeers, The Adventures Of Robin Hood, Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, The Mummy 1999 and the Indiana Jones movies. (Not 5). Instead we got a boring slog. Witch is me being nice.

When I watched Assassin's Creed in January 2017, I think it became my favorite as a non game fan and a player. When I played AC Odyssey for the first time, I think the mistake AC Movie did was project memories, wake up Cal, project again, and wake up Cal again. It's repetitive and feels like seeing RU-vid ads every twenty minutes.

Because it's 'not' an Assassin's Creed movie? Like other game movies they steal the look and some lore then bastardize it. This kills the gaming audience. Non-gamers generally pass on games to movies because the track record sucks. Of course it wasn't all that bad as you exercise your nostalgia muscles. Because Michael Fassbender WAS NOT the assassin, they spent TOO much time in the present - that's WHY. Don't get me started on the Animus which James Cameron captured better in the first AVATAR.

My main 3 dislikes are 1) too much time in the present day. The games take place in the past. 2) The past flashbacks were excellent and I would have liked to get to know them, and the animus was cool, but after the first sequence, it should never been seen again. To use it like they did, took you out of the moment in the past. 3) although beautifully shot, good action when there was action, I found this movie slow, plodding and incredibly BORING! And that's not Assassin's Creed.

I’m admittedly torn on the rating aspect. I guess it’d come down to how they use the higher rating. Like, is it used to have brutality just for the sake of it? Is there a purpose to that violence being on screen? Etc. A thought I did just have in terms of modern/historical balancing, whether a show or movie, is kinda like the comics or how the TTRpG presents it? Person on the street gets rescued by the Assassins (instead of taken by Templars) due to their ancestry, use the past, and have them actually use the modern day to have some action as well so it’s not just exposition. Weave in moments of an Assassin Cell like Desmond’s missions in AC3. Almost like a reverse of The Matrix?

I always said that Video Game adaptations would work better as a TV Series rather than a movie, especially for IPs that have convoluted and rich history, and everything is a plot point in some way like Assassin's Creed, Halo, Gears of War, or even Call of Duty. There is just way to much to adapt in such a little timeframe that making an hour and a half or two hour movie for those games is next to impossible without making it borderline confusing that even regular movie goers wouldn't understand and hardcore fans hate, or major plot points and characters being cut completely. Assassin's Creed is no different, as there is basically six plot points over the span of just AC1 to AC3 and Desmond's story. Eight if you want to consider Rogue and Black Flag which are tie in's to the Kenway and Desmond storyline and lineage.
@danielblack2883

The movie was made by people that did not understand the game and focused on past and present in the 50%-50% ratio, big mistake. More so they created a story completely unrelated to any of the games, another big mistake, nobody that played the games could relate to it and those that didn't play the games didn't understand shit from the story. This should have been extended over at least 2 movies with more background explanation for everything, story and concept of the Animus. I played all games and did not like the movie simply because it gets nowhere, all the characters are unknown, story is the same, and if people that play the game have difficulty with this then the ones that don't know the games are completely lost. The story is not that compelling that you would wanna see a sequel. They should have focused on the past a lot more since in the present ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENS. The past is what made the games great.

I haven't seen this movie since 2016. Just rewatched it and found it very enjoyable. The action sequences are great, the parkour was outstanding, overall esthetic was very good. The storyline was just good enough to keep things moving until the next action sequence. It is a avery enjoyable film.
