"The Justice Department on Tuesday sued to block JetBlue Airways $3.8 billion proposed takeover of budget carrier Spirit Airlines the Biden administration’s latest attempt to prevent industry consolidation.
Spirit Airlines agreed to sell itself to JetBlue last summer after a long battle for the carrier between JetBlue and Frontier Airlines New York-based JetBlue’s acquisition of Spirit faced a high hurdle with regulators from the start, and the airline on Monday said it expected DOJ action this week.
JetBlue’s takeover of Spirit would create the fifth-largest airline in the country and also eliminate Florida-based Spirit, with its business model of rock-bottom fares and fees for everything from carry-on baggage to seat assignments.

I live in Italy, and my adult children live in the States - I'm mind-blown how much cell plans are there. I own my phone... I pay my carrier Iliad €9.99 ( no contract) a month for 120gb data unlimited text and calls.. plus free international calls to several countries, including the US.

Never eve ever book a ticket anywhere except through the actual airline. You will actually be protected through airline policies. I fly internationally at least twice a year. I am no pro, but I have learned from my own mistakes - do not use multiply airlines in a ticket purchase, you might end up paying more for your baggage. Read Read read. Also, try buying your tickets during the week . Tuesday or Wednesday, purchases are cheaper than wknd purchases. Book in advance- no more than 6-8 wks.

Spirit is a saver if you really understand how to prep for it. Bring water and eat before you get on and make sure your bag is a certain size. Flight is crap but you get your money

DOJ approved all mergers, but wanna block only this one, now what is a crazy. If DOJ was worried about prices, they shoulda blocked all those mergers before this one. JetBlue is a great airline and I believe this merger is the best thing that can happen to customers.

If Spirit goes away, other airlines like Breeze and Allegiant will take that niche. Also if JetBlue doesn't take Spirit, Spirit will still go away anyway, except you won't have the airline to take on the big 4.

The people doing this video are missing one very important point: This is airline merger is different and would actually be beneficial for consumers for the following reasons: 1. Historically, when Jetblue enters a new route, the rates drop far below what they were with legacy carriers. This does not happen with other carriers due to Jetblue’s unique mix of industry leading perks that actually make flying enjoyable and low fares. 2. This makes sense logistically and operationally as both airlines are the only two big US all-Airbus fleets. 3. Who wouldn’t want to replace Spririt’s deplorable flying experience with JB’s extra legroom, snacks, tvs and wifi? 4. This combined airline would make up at most 10% of the market. I despise big conglomerates just as much as the next guy but instead of prevent this merger, why not breakup the big 4 which should have never been allowed…mergers like US Airways and American, Delta and Northwest, United and Continental. Why not break up the too big to fail conglomerates in the airline industry that truly rape the passengers.

I have taken Spirit airlines about 4-5 times now and to be honest not that bad and had no complaints! Flights on time , seats not that bad for a 2 hour flight. Of course all these flights were during low season!

The utter lack of the airline and travel industry from these two baffles me... I'm surprised people watch this. Delta, during covid bought out LAMAT airlines and nobody bats an eye. The DoJ blocking the merger was most likely influenced from a lobbyist from one of the top airlines. There are 4 airlines much larger than the merger of Spirit+JetBlue. The top airlines are American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, United. The merger is beneficial for consumers since JetBlue will increase flight destination to the Carribeans + around the south east part of US, increase roster of Pilots (most pilots want to fly with the big four - now this will make it the big 5), increase the fleet size. Websites like Expedia actually bid for contracts (with car rental, hotels, airlines) way ahead so they can then offer it to consumers at a discount. They are like a middle broker, doing all the marketing and advertisements and customer service. They paid for it, assumed the risks and normally purchase high volume contracts. Source: worked in travel, rental, and sales industry.

Airlines is still cheaper faster. A roomette on amtrack to chicago costs over $400 and take over 18 hours. A 2 hour flight to chicago usually costs $100

I haven't seen the DOJ's objections yet, but if it's anything like the past, all the objections can be overcome by actions to be taken by Spirit and Jet Blue. That can at least make them give up Monopoly Routes as well as changes to the structure of the new company. I'm glad the DOJ is on this and I also have heard Jet Blue talking about how they know that would happen.

Flown aligiant from Memphis to Los Angeles multiple times. The only reason I have flown with them it's becuase of time convenience but after I purchase tickets with them after all the fees I ended up paying about the same flying with delta just to mention they both fly non stop from Memphis to Los Angeles. I prefer delta by far and the cost is about the same. Delta does offer more things like snacks and all their planes are more comfortable as far as seats. and they give you headphones at no extra cost to watch movies.

I can get a flight with them for under $200 round trip! Last time I flown on Spirit it was $500! NOPE NOPE NOPE! I was just on a Icelandair flight….worst flight EVER! DOT needs to do something about that 🤬

We flew on Spirit once. We paid extra for the front seats cause I was going to be in a wheelchair and have mobility issues. Get to pick up the tickets, and suddenly we have to pick seats again and the front ones were taken, and we had to pay again to pick seats. This happened on the return flight as well. After that trip we decided to never fly Spirit again.

When I sold travel years ago I learned the whole industry is made up of consortiums... So hotels for instance are priced almost the same no matter if you book it on the company site or Expedia... Airlines rarely have any kind of special rates and generally speaking you get the best deals on travel through travel agents then booking sites then the companies site... That doesn't always happen with companies outside of the consortiums, they tend to be either independent or high-end. It has been a long time so I'm sure some things are different but I really doubt the consortium setup has changed which usually includes hotels, cruises, and resorts.

I'm only 27 years old and was not around for the golden age of flying, but even in my lifetime I've said goodbye to Continental, US, Northwest, Midwest (flew plenty of times, miss their delicious cookies and big seats), Virgin America, AirTran, ATA, America West, and TWA. Enough with the mergers already. Also there was Song airlines but that doesn't really count since it was just a brand of Delta

Ana I understand the logical deduction of what you’re trying to say, and in a balanced market, that would be true, more competition is better for the consumer. HOWEVER, the airline industry is not a balanced market. There are four airlines (that I don’t even have to mention by name, you know who they are), that operate nearly 80% of the industry. With that consideration, one of two things should happen. 1 they block the Spirit JetBlue merger, and they break up the four largest monopolies in America (which they’re not going to do) or two, allow the merger and allow a fifth competitor to compete against the four airlines that are the monopolies of this industry (four airlines that are of size from the result of mergers)

Very entitled of you to say that. If you're willing to spend more to get away from "trashy" people you should learn more about something called first class. It's still a lot of money, and beyond the budget of millions of Americans. Should the New York subway fare be $10 so "undesirables" can't afford it? You want to make law-abiding people living in poverty to suffer? Realize how beneficial for people it is to have air travel not be prohibitively expensive. Opportunities to see the world and learn new perspectives. One more thing: I would be skeptical about the idea that misconduct on airplanes is a new phenomenon. It could have happened just as frequently in the past, but we just didn't hear about it since social media wasn't a thing. Same with police brutality
