The thing the DRZ has over all the other enduro models is the LONG service intervals and reliability. It really is in a league of it's own.

I own a Drz400E model and love it. I keep looking for a more updated dual sport with fuel injection, 6 speed and at least 400cc, but nothing compares to the E. It's light enough for off road and heavy enough for on road. A plus for me is the low gearing for slow technical work. Cheap parts, still looks cool to an old dude like me, lol..

For what you were saying you need I would consider a XR650R. It has all the power of the 701 using a bulletproof engine with a Nikasil liner that basically never wears out. Also has lock nut valve adjustment making it easier to work on at home. The suspension is very good out of the box and is perfectly matched to the frame, making it both good for high speed stability and tight/rough areas. The transmission is geared long enough for high speeds, and if you want it to go faster you can gear it super long without major issues. The low end torque is so good that it can handle long firsts without too much clutch, which, I might add, is on a quick access cover. Parts are cheap and relatively easy to find being a Honda, and you will likely never really have to replace anything major. The only two downsides are that it is a dirt bike and doesn't have a steering lock, and the subframe isn't made for carrying lots of luggage (which is also a problem on the DRZ-E and most dirt bikes). Unless you're married to E-start (you can get kits on the R) I would highly recommend looking at them, it's a great bike for Colorado. It does basically everything that the other bikes can't do with very few sacrifices. If you're ever interested in riding one I have a street legal '00 in the Metro area you're welcome to try out.

I agree. Can cruise at 80mph smooth as butter only holding on with 2 fingures on the throttle. Has been the most reliable bike I have owned in 35 years of riding. Now 53,000 miles and running better than it did new. Planning on a full rebuild if I make it to 100,000 miles. FCR39mm, stage 2 cams. 15/41 sprocket for road, 13/45 for trails and local roads.

You can fit the Honda CRF450 x/r rear brake master cylinder on the drz with no problems or modifications, just did to to mine and its waaaay better, give that a go, and change the hoses to steel breaded while your at it, night and day differance!

@@jeffpaxton9172 2017, small amount of rub as the bolt tightens down, but nothing tragic, I just kept tightening it with no future or current issues

There are lighter bikes out there but they don't have the torque the E has. They require you to shift all the time and rev the guts out of the engine to go anywhere. To get the torque you could buy a 450 but it will get you hurt because its power is un-useable for the average rider in the woods. The DRZ can also be ridden for a very long time without having to rebuild the top end every 150 hours like the other bikes out there. People say the E is heavy but actually its on par or lighter than the average japanese 450 dual sport. The E is just the perfect overall machine even now after 24 years.

Im in Australia and have access to the E model. I've been researching for months what to buy for my first bike and if my memory is right you also have a video saying that the crf300L is better than the drz? I can imagine myself being happy with both but the drz is ready from the showroom floor where as the crf will need new suspension. The build quality of the crf looks very cheap in person compared to the drz as well. Although i said id be happy with either bike, it's something I'll never know until i go off road and feel it for myself. I do see a lot of crf owners spend lots of money on performance mods which is almost a red flag for a potential buyer aha

OOhh you just opened up a can of worms hahah! So not going to lie, the crf300L is "a little" better on tight single track, and just more "technical trails" because it does seem to hold its weight lower and just doesnt feel as heavy. Its also much more "smoother" feeling, but possibly because it was brand new. The DRZ400E is more than capable on enduro trails too. For the first bike that is tricky, because your riding style changes. In my honest opinion, either or bike would do if you can find used. If you already have a bit of experience, the DRZ400 would be a good first bike and possibly all you need. I think I might recommend the DRZ400E because you can always resell it at its current value, but honestly the DRZ400 is a bike you just never sell....until they make a 6 spd drz400 one day ha ha! And a more "modern" efi one

My drz has pulled through so many situations that were going sideways where i thought for sure i was gonna eat shit. Just automatically corrects and i ask how im still alive. I can keep up with two strokes 60 lbs lighter than me, the boys are shocked and they aren't amateurs. Love this bike. Shes a heavy bitch but big girls need love too right?
