Alternative theory: The policy of capturing water benders changed to killing them because Ozai had just come to power. We see after Iroh’s sons death that that the previous fire lord Azulon was not as bad as Ozai. Judging by Katara’s age when her mother died, the timings add up.

In 100 years, the Fire Nation took over most of the Earth Kingdom, except Ba Sing Se and Omashu and some other small areas. They also nearly wiped out the Southern Water Tribe, which was probably once nearly as powerfull as its northern counterpart. That's not nothing, considering they were facing two nations at once and that they couldn't use the power of Sozin's comet.
@shreshthadavi141
@shreshthadavi141 3 года назад

@miszpnay7392

Completely agree! Ba Sing Se was difficult to siege. Even the Dragon of the West couldn’t hold it down. Also, we learned that there was another Day of Black Sun. It could have been within those 100 years. The Fire Nation had to protect themselves. They needed some time to focus on building their defenses i.e. Gates of Azulon.

@sthelenskungfu
@sthelenskungfu 3 года назад
I always thought it was Iroh's influence on his father, and then when Iroh lost his son and went into seclusion and Ozai took the throne, then they started killing instead of taking prisoners. Sozin actively wanted to share the wealth and propriety of the Fire Nation (by conquering everyone else... it's all the same thing, right?) For Sozin, everyone in the Air Temples were just unfortunate collateral damage in his pursuit of the Avatar. Azulan wanted to fulfill his father's dream (of conquering everyone.) Iroh wanted to create a lasting peace (at first but conquering everyone, but when he did a spiritual quest after losing his son he decided it would be best to create a peace maker out of his nephew.) Ozai actually believed that only the Fire Nation citizens count as people worth saving or helping.

Others have mentioned that the math doesn’t add up for them to mistake Kya for Hama. Hama would have been an old lady at the time Kya was killed, but they didn’t necessarily have to be looking for a child either. If it’s been 50 years since their last raid a new water bender could be anywhere from 0-50 years old

A Fire Nation fishing trawler could have witnessed some water bending at a distance. Possibly among a group of people so the report couldn't pinpoint exactly who did it, but they would know where the nearest village was and figure that's a likely place to look first. We, the audience, are mostly concerned with what the Fire Navy was doing, but there would have been other Fire Nation endeavours on the ocean including fishing and commercial transport.

@@DVankeuren The Foggy Swamp water benders are part of the Water Tribes, they've just been forgotten by the rest of the world like the Sun Warriors were for the Fire Nation. It is perfectly plausible for a water bending Avatar to be born to them. It is the primary bending that follows the pattern, the Avatar could be born anywhere there is the potential for it. However, statistics would tend toward the Northern or Southern Water Tribes by population. And yes, it is possible that there is a geographic pattern to where the Avatar is born in a particular nation, but we don't have a large enough sample size to meaningfully make that determination.

What's also interesting is that Rah is retired when he meets Katara again after all these years. He's empty and tells Katara to take his mother in order for them to be even. It makes you wonder if he starts to feel bad about killing kya when you can assume word got back to him a few weeks ago that Hama was captured after like 30+ years and realized that he had a mistake because he killed the wrong person completely unaware that Katara would face him one day and make him pay.

Hmm. This is interesting, though thematically I like the idea that there was no greater plan or series of events that led to Kya's death. She was the victim of one man's cruelty and she died because Yan Ra felt like killing her. Also if the Fire Nation no longer thinks the Air Avatar is alive, then why is Zuko looking for an Airbender? Yes, he's searching the Southern Water Tribe when he first encounters Aang, but he was looking for an Airbender and we learn in a flashback later on that he started his search at the Western Air Temple, and then continued to the other temples before scouring the rest of the globe, which considering the timing, means that Zuko must have encountered the Mechanist and his band of refugees living at the Northern Air Temple, which isn't really relevant, but it's fun to think about.

But Hama's age doesn't line up with Kya at all? Even if she was a generous 15 when she was captured (despite not looking anything near the ages of the main characters), that would make her 75 during the events of the show, as she was captured 40 years into the 100 year war. Let's assume, based on the approximate ages of Katara and Sokka, that Kya was killed 10 years prior to the show. That would mean, if they were looking for Hama, they're looking for someone who, at the very youngest, is 65. Kya doesn't match that profile at all. If anything, it would be more likely that they thought Kya was the child of Hama, but definitely not Hama herself.
