Why the japanese use Tatami mats
knowledge pebble's knowledge video
In Japan, statistics show that more than 400 people die at home every winter.
This is due to Japan's poorly insulated houses.
But that doesn't mean that Japan, an architectural powerhouse, doesn't have heating and insulation technology.
It is said that architecture is a mirror of its environment
Architecture is the sum total of the process of overcoming or adapting to the environment of each country.
Humid countries build houses with a distance between the ground and the floor.
Snowy countries steeply slope their roofs.
and rainy countries have longer eaves.
Japanese houses are built this way because it's much harder and more important to keep the heat out in the summer than the cold in the winter.
And at the centre of it all is the tatami mat
In some parts of Japan, there is great pride in tatami mats.
Find out why tatami mats are so important in Japanese homes and what their pros and cons are.
As those of you who have travelled to Japan in the summer will know, summers in Japan are really hot.
Temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius are one thing, but being surrounded by the sea on all sides, the humidity is really high.
One of the most essential items you can't live without in Japan in the summer is tatami mats.
Tatami, which means "to fold" or "to overlap", is a square, thick floor covering woven from Juncus effusus.
Juncus effusus, the material of tatami mats, is commonly referred to as "common rush" or "soft rush".
They are usually 180 x 90 cm.
They are 4cm to 6cm thick and usually weigh around 20kg per sheet.
In Japan, the size of a room is usually indicated by the number on the tatami mat
The average room size in a typical home is six tatami mats.
Tatami mats have long been the preserve of the ruling class.
