Ha in Ireland unionising is a part of our constitution and once protest starts if it’s not fulfilled within 4 months it’s brought to Irish court who love the Irish and usually give them what they want. really sucks to be American rn
I worked at Kroger for about 5 years, it was probably the most hostile work environment I've ever been in, my boss was accused of sexual harassment multiple times and they refused to do anything about, also they stiffed us on hazard pay during the pandemic
Theres a chance we might not merge now that I contacted one of the ladies trying to block it they sent me a survey in the mail they wanted to make sure I was getting paid 😊 because I'm prone to getting sick so merging would be a no no because covid is not totally gone they just pretend it is I've heard a lot of people call us evil but we are not we don't have the funding for it. They could save a lot of money by hiring a few more people and lowering the cost of groceries and consumer goods we just have to find people that want to work. I'm not sure if our location will close or not but I was told we weren't even if it merges. That's the power of a union store and they can take suggestions like that if you have a positive suggestion for them just call or email your union rep if anyone decides you can't have a lunch or if you ever call in like I did today and someone tells you we need you to come in anyway there's rules that they have to follow too.
Every merger, buyout, or sale of a grocery store has always increased the overall product pricing in every situation, and it usually happens in less than three months of the completion of the transaction.
Here is a tip. It is becoming illegal to sell products to people that you've grown yourself, so to combat this you could simply give the food away for free, and if anyone wants to leave a tip, well, isn't that nice of them?
These are “laws” people. Meaning little words that they use police to enforce. These people are voted in. If everyone can stop bickering over dumb crap like pronouns and red hats, we could force them to make laws that didn’t sell us to the highest bidder.
@electrictroy2010 Unless the market changes drastically, monopolies have the power to buy small competitors or underprice them. That is true even without government interference.
@milesblue638 So what if you don't sell to them? These monopolies can't underprice forever. Eventually they'll raise their prices again or go under. A small business has a lot less to lose than a massive corporation.

Democracy has been a scam in this country for a long looong time. It's sad really. I love what this place is *meant* to be about but god do I hate what it actually is.
@ Kiwi Bonsai You do have a point. You did simplify it a bit, but still accurate. I’ll add that it’s not just government allowing or pushing it thru. It’s the bullying from neighbors and store clerks. Neighbors telling you to return your own carts, otherwise you’re a deadbeat. But, it’s us that needed to push back and tell the grocer to hire more lot attendants because we’re sick of no carts in the que. And we needed to tell clerks, to back off of directing us toward the self check out…
You forgot to mention Pick n Save and Metro Market. These are big Midwestern grocers and have switched ownership from long-time corp. Roundys to Kroger about 5 years ago.
Stuffing shareholders' pockets isn't just tempting. They have a legal responsibility to maximize profits any way they can. That's why the rich get exponentially richer while the rest of us struggle to afford cereal.
Kroger is one of the prime examples of corporate evil. Corporate moves like this are why I'm trying to get into homesteading and be more self sufficient.
Its a monopoly mess! Not only cost of food will go up but wages and working conditions will go down. No one will work for kroger if they dont make some serious changes in management and training.
No merger has ever proven to help the consumer - anyone hear of Ticketmaster- NO 👎🏻 to all mergers they benefit only the wealthy- not the consumer not the workers
I sometimes miss the days when I lived in the middle of nowhere and my grocery options were the local food coop and the farmers market. Trader Joe’s is ok at least.
And if they increase prices, any store left will raise their prices too just like gas stations do. Write to your democrat reps asking them to bust this trust.
I doubt the feds will allow a store to directly close.. overlapping stores will have to be sold off to a competitor. What the real story behind this is the evils of private equity, which owns Albertsons/Safeway. They really don’t want to own and operate those stores anymore, so I’m sure they went on a quest to find a buyer. In markets without overlap, which are most of them, this’ll out the stores in the hands of a company that actually wants to operate them. That being said, grocery stores should be an industry with a regulated profit margin. If they make to much, they need to return it to the customers on a proportional basis. The loyalty program will allow them to do this.
In my city the deli stuff is all the same price $6.99 WTF? Kroger is bad 🖕 Two days after I bought a gallon of milk it was spoiled nine days before the expiration date 🤬
My grocery store list is none of those except Safeway because they carry one product I like. I boycotted the rast because of actions such as this. If the employees are entitled enough to be rude to customers, there is a bigger problem in management.
I'm glad I have a workers coop, open 24/7, grocery store nearby. It's huge and has almost everything, and prices haven't risen nearly as much. Woodman's for the win!
Meanwhile I work at Food Lion, and while there are Kroger stores in my area, there are no Albertsons, so hopefully it doesn't impact my area as much as it will others.
The conclusion of them closing stores for “internal competition” is dumb. If anything they would rebrand. Kroger owns a lot and has for a long time, there is no evidence to suggest they will be closing locations regardless of the name of the brand.
I’m shopping at a local vegan store. And I buy meat from local butchers or farmers markets. STOP SHOPPING AT CORPORATIONS, THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS! And if you don’t have these in your area, then this is a business opportunity for your community!
The merger is a better option vs Albertsons shuttering a majority of its stores in regions it deems unprofitable, unironically the President of UFCW Local 1776 keeps flipping on his support of the merger but most Acme employees (a subsidiary of Albertsons) support the merger, conventional grocery stores need to be able to compete with Amazon and Walmart or soon we will only have Amazon & Walmart as our grocery options, you need to be able to buy in the same quantities of at least Walmart to even try to compete in price, the merger still leaves Amazon and Walmart as the largest grocers so opposing this merger means you support a Walmart & Amazon monopoly on our food supply which means even less unions and even lower pay
My town literally only has a Walmart so surprisingly I’m not effected on this one. Wow. I do love Kroger though and wish we had one so I mean if I had my way and had access to anything other than Walmart I’d be rightfully concerned about my personal ability to continue to buy groceries for our family
Sorry buts it's funny when she said "You don't go to" No, I've never in my life heard of any of those stores before. I had never even heard of Kroger before until I started doing gig delivery apps in a bigger city nearby.
Memorize all of the information you can and repeat it to as many people as you can find that don't know about this. There are MILLIONS of us, we can start the process of pushing back but we need to educate each other. That is my humble opinion, from one common person to another 💙💙💙💙💙💙 stay safe and stay awesome!
Safeway is across from Walmart and Winco here. I go to Winco as long as I have cash. End up going to Walmart since there is a lack of any local stores for most stuff. Hard to avoid a big corrupt company. Dollar Tree isn't exactly pro-worker. My hometown has a Safeway across from Fred Meyer, so bye bye smaller Safeway 🤣
Yes... Business consolidations do lead to higher prices..(inflation)..fact. It's been happening for a couple of decades... Stricter regulations... trust busting... would help alleviate big corporations ability to price gouge... by promoting more free and fair competition...

Over the last decade or more the RepubliCons have focused on deregulation that has allowed more consolidations causing a lack of competition which leads to price gouging.... This has got to change but it doesn't look likely anytime soon. The solution is not smaller government... It's not less regulation as the Republicans would have it... The solution is more regulation... Bigger government more government intervention... The target for this right now is Big tech... But we can't stop there... If Republicans have control it will never get done...
I was sad to hear about the merger because I grocery shop with both companies. They usually have very different deals when it comes to sales and even digital coupons in their apps.
Kroger needs the merger to increase size, to increase volume so they can compete against Walmart. Even after this merger Walmart was still be four times larger. Walmart is the one who doesn't want this merger to go through.
I say its time we do our own cooperative/go fund me and create our own store and put those a**holes out of business. We make a deal with small growers i those growers that have been muscled out of business recruit them back into this endeavor in which they become part owners and have a say in what prices should be on products. obviously this is a rough draft.
