The NFL can’t stop blitzing Jalen Hurts, and he took a major step back in 2023. The entire Eagles offense struggled in the later part of the 2023 season as teams blitzed Hurts repeatedly. But as football goes, it wasn’t just on the Quarterback, the receivers and offensive line struggled as well, and Brian Johnson’s offensive scheme did Hurts no favors. Why did the NFL blitz Hurts so much and why did the Eagles entire season go so wrong? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts and how he handled being the NFL’s most blitzed quarterback.

They designed the offense that way deliberately to play to Jalen’s strengths as a passer. In a way, they were almost forced to call their offense this way due to the limitations of their star QB. Which are: he doesn’t see well over the middle, and he doesn’t excel making quick decisions.

This is the best explanation I have read or watched since the season ended. Everyone blames the defense (understandable)and makes excuses for the offense, since they were still top 10. They were an offensive mess, especially in the second half. Makes sense everyone started attacking their major weakness. The opposing DC must have been laughing seeing the lack of adjustments. Excellent video Alex. High, high quality presentation. Well done.

Super athletic quarterbacks often come back to earth if they don't develop a better pocket game because the league adjusts to whatever their weakness is. Steve Young himself said he became a much better QB after he sprained his ankle and stopped thinking about running.

Yep Exactly...Lamar for example is just now learning to be a QB so every playoffs he gets exposed...hes so fat behind most QBs this far into their careers but at least his legs bought hin enough time to get this far. Excellent video. I can't even finish watching it. It is bringing back trauma I didn't know I was carrying. 😂 Last year was hard to watch, beginning to end. Even when the Eagles were 10-1, many of us had ulcers from watching this stuff. Terrible as it was, it was almost a relief when the wheels finally came off and the season disintegrated. Coaching was the worst of many issues last year, and I think we are in a much better spot this season. The defense was talent poor, and is at least improved. (And we now have a real DC.) Hurts will be the key. Last year should've been a year in which he continued to improve and grow, addressing the weaknesses in his game. Instead, the coaches failed him and he looked lost and frustrated. We hope he will be healthy, well coached, and improved this season.

Teams had to stack the box to keep from getting run over. Very small step from that to bringing pressure on passing downs. That's what KC did to them in the Super Bowl. Make Hurts throw perfect dimes under pressure all day long by denying the run and blitzing the heck out of him. Hurts still almost pulled it off, because he was darn near perfect for most of the game. KC's rookie class of bigger, more athletic defensive backs (moving on from Tyrann Mathieu) had a lot to do with it.

It was miserable to see Devonta Smith's route chart after the season and realizing (what we already kinda knew) that 99% of the routes he ran started and ended at the same side of the field. He barely crossed the field and EVERY time a player ran a route crossing the field we had very good gain. We all thought "oh now they saw the potential there!!" but no, they just refused to open up the playbook. I don't know exactly what happend but I'm sure there was a bit of hubris there. Like "this team can run anything or nothing at all and talent will carry them". And the fact that we got to 10-1 and AJ Brown had an unbelievable stretch speaks for itself. This is easily a SB winning roster if paired with a good coaching staff.

Another thing people need to remember, when a qb had a great year its not always gonna be the same the next year. Teams just adjust, you saw it with patrick mahomes when his first year he threw for 50 and was throwing bombs down the field every game, now defenses send two high safetys to stop the deep throw and keep everything in front for them. But its up to the qb to adjust to the defense, whcih is what patrick has done successfully. I bet you cj stroud will not have the same success he did this last year because theres a whole years worth of film and defenses will adjust. Jalen is perfectly capable of adjusting but its up to them to take tht step

Small question about semantics. Do you guys consider LBs to be part of the secondary? He mentions that he does at the beginning of the video and I guess I never viewed them as part of the secondary, even tho they drop into coverage often.

Most people don't consider linebackers secondary unless they are dimebacks like Jayron Kearse or Jamal Adams

The issue with jalen struggling with the blitz was the play calling I’m not saying it’s all on the play calling but the majority of it was the eagles never did passing plays across the middle of the field so it was probably harder for him to find any open options cause the open part of the field in the middle was never being used and the eagles offense was just predictable last year😂😂😂

While I do agree that Jalen Hurts was not great, I think it was way more of a brian johnson issue cuz he was super uncreative and just bad at his job, I think Hurts will do better with Kellen moore as his OC, although probably not as good as he was with steichen

The problem with trying to fix all this is that almost all coaches are stubborn to a fault. Can Sirianni honestly assess himself and get better? Doubtful, but its possible.

The Eagles players’ talent was able to carry them to 10-1. The coaching staff was the problem. I hope Moore coaches Jalen hard.

The data shows what happened, but not why that happened. To begin with, the Eagles have not given an explanation for the total collapse in the later games of last season. We are only left with supposition based on the team’s off season moves. So, let’s look from that. While the offense didn’t perform as well as last season, it was still one of the better offensive units in the league. The issue was almost exclusively on the defensive side. Mostly, due to a lack of talent in the secondary. It seems to me, there was a game philosophy issue at the root of the failure, on both side of the ball. That philosophy was, the obsessive focus on the ‘big play’. Obsessed with making the big play on offense, and with not giving up the big play on defense. That explains much of what we saw happen on the field. Make no mistake, this was Sirianni’s base football philosophy, as mindlessly stupid as it was. He said as much in more than one Press meeting. On offense, a risky constant pushing of the ball downfield, regardless of down & distance. Made obvious by Hurts’ throwing long when the was an open first down short, and holding the ball waiting to see if a big play develops downfield, often rolling-out to further extend the play. On defense, it produced a soft coverage scheme, giving up first down, after first down toavoid giving up a deep completion.

Hurts kills the offense by scrambling to the right and always looking to throw outside. The frustration is the equivalent of McNabb dirt balls.
@oilburnerde

You didn't touch on the lack of the run game. The Eagles were successful in the 22 season and the early part of last season when the ran the ball. They seemed to become allergic to the run game early and began to rely on "the big play" that they had success with in '22. As you stated, the were very predictable, painfully predictable. The fact that they didn't make any adjustments at all, week after week, was very hard to watch.

If hurts is getting blitz more then the receiver should know to turn around quickly. AJ brown or 88 could had work together to get short catch at 1:38
@Relayer6a

Interesting that those first two hot blitzes you showed Jalen failed to make the "hot read" and threw away from the Blitz. In both instances the receiver made the read and broke off the route, but Jalen never even looked that way and instead threw into the coverage. On those long bombs vs the Blitz the Oline successfully blocked it up. That's what gave him the time to go deep. And Hurts really isn't that good of a passer. Maybe the call should be, If you see man coverage run. That's what he does best. And those times where there was no hot receiver it was Hurts who failed to read the blitz and adjust. The OC doesn't know they're going to blitz when he sends the play in. He should have an idea from game film but the QB sees the alignment by the defense and reads who the blitzer is and adjusts. Why do some QBs get no scrutiny? "It's the receiver's fault." When clearly the ball was under-thrown. "It's the OC's fault." When clearly Hurts made the wrong read. The hot read, was to the left, where the free rusher came from, and was wide open.

It’s very simple coach Nick has said a million times if her sees one of our two WR1’s on single coverage he wants Jalen to Air it Out deep. There is a reason why Jalen has the highest depth of targets. It’s not complicated and Nick never has built in hot reads into the office he relies on Jalen being super man

4:30 yea that’s dumb. Adorie Jackson is one of the fastest corners and he’s like 12 yards deep. Run a curl route at least or do a short catch and get 3-5 yards and who knows maybe he makes a man miss. That’s was a bad play
