Russell Wilson can (still) only run one offense.

Russell Wilson can still only run one kind of offense and now he’s been cut from the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton tried to make him into a quarterback who could operate his system, but the Broncos paid 39 million dollars NOT to play for them this year, because he only runs one kind of system: his. What is Payton asking him to do that he can’t? And what is the Russell Wilson system that the QB insists on running? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Denver Broncos (and now Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback) Russell Wilson.

What is your gut feeling on how the Russ-Steelers saga turns out? I think with Arthur Smith (who is a good OC, maybe not the * best * head coach) the receiving talent, a much improved offensive line, and a good defense, they could go 5-12

Winningest QB in NFL history in his first 10 seasons. FACT: he did not have the best roster in NFL history to work with, nor the best coaching either. So don't tell me how he rode the coattails of his defense or any of that crap. Terry Bradshaw had a better defense than he did. Nobody think he sucked & credits his defense alone for his Super Bowl wins. Peyton Manning was surrounded by great talent. Nobody thinks he was worthless. Russ won more than any guy in the history of the game over his first decade & that means HE was the primary factor in that. Stats can be deceiving, but 105 wins & 53 losses are not lies. Carson Wentz had 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions his one year in Indy. Good stats ain’t they? What the stats don’t show is 10 plus interceptions that the defense dropped. Russ is the same way. The stats don’t show you how often those fourth quarter comebacks were needed BECAUSE of Russ.

You also have to look at the sack rate. Wilson had a horrifying sack rate above 9.5 during his time on the Broncos. Anything above a 7 means you should alter your scheme, O-Line personnel, or find a new QB. The Broncos did the first two in the 2023 off-season with the transition to Sean Payton and signing Mike McGlinchey, and Russ still keeps eating unnecessary sacks. He's the reason why so many drives stall out. Same deal with other high-sack QBs like Wentz, Watson, and Fields. They don't have good pocket awareness.

Peyton continually tried to put Russ in positions that match his strengths, the video even talks about it. Russ doesn’t process the game fast enough but thought a “better teacher” would make him be able to. This video perfectly highlights both Russ’s weaknesses and what Sean was doing to help him succeed. Russ let go of everything he needed to succeed when he left Seattle: WR Chemistry, a great run game, and an OL that understands his tendencies. Even Seattle has confirmed this, their OC said it was nice to have Geno because the could “open up the playbook.” They used to send RBs or WRs into the huddle with the play calls. The video even talks about how his receivers used to read defenses for him. Russ is a great athlete and I wish him the best, but I’m glad he’s out of Denver. P.S. he’s gone to an organization that is a lot more put together than Denver currently, so miss me with the “Watch Russ have a better season than the Broncos this year” BS. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they play Fields half way through the season because without Russ’s old legs defenses will tear him up.

@@TubaManBoy Payton did not. Payton wanted Russ to run HIS system. Every complaint you can make about Russ, were complaints about Russ in Seattle. Payton never matched Russell's strengths by doing what Pete Carroll did. Payton hated Russ for not being a timing and rhythm QB. You can't complain about Russell's weaknesses when those weaknesses existed before the trade. Russ did much better in Seattle because Pete knew what he was doing. What Lockett did by reading defenses is no different from what great QB and WR duos do. Sean Payton couldn't even give Russ an average run game, it was bad. @TubaManBoy 6 дней назад
@@andref9663 yes, the difference between Seattle and Denver was that Russ had declining athleticism and now NEEDED all of those things to succeed. Peyton did the best he could to put Russ in a position to succeed, beefed up the line, slimmed down the playbook, and tried to focus on the run. The problem is Russ couldn’t move the way he used to when he first came to Seattle so without his young athleticism combined with less chemistry between him, his line, and his receivers; the defense could take advantage of his inability to throw middle of the field. They loaded the box, took out the run game, and forced Russ to beat em with more than moon balls. He used to be able to handle that with scramble drills but he no longer has the same burst so his scrambles more often led to sacks. Just compare his year with Hackett to his year with Sean and there’s no way to say that Sean didn’t AT LEAST try to cater to his strengths.

This is the issue with many 'dual threat' QB's, they rely on their mobility so often that when they're late in their careers, their game morphs into a version of this. Peyton had a short QB in Drew Brees but Brees had made all the adjustments early in his career to compensate for his 'short' comings, we see this in Doug Flutie's career, also but Wilson never had to bother with learning that and now he's bottle necked his skill set. The same thing will happen to Lamar Jackson and some would say it's already begun. If you don't see the value in it early, you narrow your skill set until it becomes a series of bad habits you can't be taught out of.

And avoiding sacks is one thing Pickett was at least not terrible at. The Steelers had a slightly below-average O-Line in terms of pass protection while the Broncos O-Line was Top 10 with an argument for Top 5. Pickett's sack rate was 6.6 (kinda high, but not too concerning), Russ Wilson had a worrisome sack rate of 9.1, and Fields had an abysmal sack rate of 10.6. I hope the Steelers know what they're getting into with signing Wilson and Fields.

The Steelers still made the playoffs with three different quarterbacks under center at various times throughout the season. Denver could have had a winning season even though they would still missed the playoffs, but they benched the better quarterback for the last two games MAINLY due to his contract. If Russell Wilson agreed to amended his contract back in October, he would still be a Broncos QB today, they still could have made all the same draft and free agent moves they did anyway… 🤔

I don’t think Wilson height is why he doesn’t throw to the middle of the field, I think the much bigger reason is he never learned how to do it. Kyler Murray is the same height 5”10 1/2 and yet he consistently throws across the middle, that’s where he and TE Trey McBride thrived n made their magic last season. Looking at advanced passing statistics Murray threw it over the middle 2nd most of all NFL QBs last year.

Interesting, you state that Russ cannot see over the heads of his linemen; yet your highlights prominently show Russ standing in the middle of the pocket throwing the "go" routes. Could it be that Sean Paytons offence didn't put the receivers into a position ( in the middle ) synced up with Russel ? Your argument falls a little flat, the offense has to have the receivers capable and willing to drive into the middle, a scheme that opens holes for them, AND a QB that delivers. How long did it take for Payton to develop that system with Drew Brees ? YEARS

I’ve been complaining about Russ’ Time-to-Throw (TT) number for a long time. Last year he was 3.06, standard operating procedure for him. “Perfect” is considered supposedly 2.5; it’s not coincidence that Brady was right there. Now I think it depends upon QB type and I’ll let it go that Mahomes is high because it’s for a reason. I think Russ should aim for 2.7 - it’s only a “gut” feeling though. But I argued that Wilson was a bad fit for the Broncos I think three years ago, when he was traded. He had a faster track in Seattle and he had Tyler Lockett who really bailed out Russ on those off-schedule derp sideline routes. I didn’t think it would really work in Denver. Evidently Payton think Wilson was a bad fit too for some of the reasons you bring up here.

All of that being said, if you are Sean Payton, you were brought in to work with this qb that a huge haul was given up for and a huge contract was handed out to. Seattle had 3 offensive coordinators all find success with russ as their qb, several of which didn't have the benefit of the run game.
