Why The Nikon D7200 is Still a Great Camera

The D7200 is an APS-C sensor camera that came out in 2015. I bought one in 2018, since it was considerably less expensive than the more modern version, the Nikon D7500. Additionally, the 7200 has dual card slots and is higher resolution.
I have to say that even though this camera is now 4 years old, I am extremely happy with its performance, even to this day. The resolution is as much as I need, the controls are great, and the dynamic range is class-leading.
Its video capabilities aren't great, or rather, they are difficult to use. So, I pretty much never use it for that, but I love it for taking photographs.

I am a full time professional photographer. This is my primary camera. I love it, and there is nothing on the market that will beat it's price / performance. It was the most underrated camera that Nikon ever made. I spend my money on quality lenses, and no one has been able to tell that I wasn't using a full frame camera.

jl sc what're your thoughts on the d7500? I have a Nikon d3200 and have had it for a good few years now and I do shoot video and photo. To me the video capabilities of the new model are way better (still far from perfect but it'd suit me nicely I think) Cheers
@jlsc4125

@@vaughnsigal4560 Well, I'm not a videographer, so I don't look at that side. To me there's not enough improvements to warrant the change for me. I would like the flip screen, but I have a snorkel attachment I use if I want to get the camera lower. The main drawback to me is the 20 mgpix sensor as opposed to the 24 on the D7200. As much as people say it doesn't make a difference, I'm a pixel peeper on my work, a stickler for detail, so it really does.

@@jlsc4125 Good points you make out, although my 5 year old d3200 has 24megapixels and I would bet money it resolves less detail than a d 500 (same sensor as the d7500), sensor quality often trumps pixel density, and the low light abilities the 20mp sensor has isn't to be sniffed at
@jlsc4125
@jlsc4125 5 лет назад
@@vaughnsigal4560 D3200 has an overall sensor rating of 81 while the D7200 has an overall rating of 87. The D7500 has an 86, lower than the D7200 because of the lower megapixel count.

I just got a great deal on a used D7200 with less than 800 clicks and the 18-200mm lens. $575. Mirrorless cameras have sacrificed everything on the alter of small. I have big hands too and the ergonomics of mirrorless cameras SUCK! The D7200 is very future proof. It will always take amazing photos. It is built like a tank. All magnesium weather resistant sealed body. There is a ton of high quality used lenses available going all the way back to the 70's that work on it. Dynamic range is amazing as is overall image quality. It more than holds it's own with cameras like the Fuji X-T2 and leaves the Canon "equivalents" in the dust. If photography is your passion or profession you cannot go wrong with the D7200.

It took me a while to realize the meter only works in M...A and S are basically automatic with No meter control except for the Plus Minus. The histogram is basically showing you exposure over or under exposed nothing more??? I also sometimes have to shut it off and turn it back on. The meter lags or get stuck. I do this and it starts working fine again.

As a longtime user of the D7100, I wholly agree with your assessment. I, too, would like a tilt screen, but IMO subsequent offerings in the 7000 series are incremental improvements at best. I’m mainly landscape-oriented, but with the camera set to continuous autofocus and back-button focus, it’s also useful for wildlife photography including birds in flight.

I purchased mine about 2 months ago and paid 696 dollars for it. What a fantastic camera the D7200 is. I got tired of the horrible dynamic range on my 7D mkii and when it quit working I decided to transition over to the D7200. I was able to sell off most of the Canon glass and invest in Nikon. Granted the burst rate is slower on the D7200 but there is a lot more to like about it than 10 frames a second. Anyway.....No regrets what so ever buying an older body. The sensor in the D7200 ranks as the best apsc sensor as tested by dxo marks even today.

Agreed 150%, I have a D850 but, I still love my D7200 it is a GREAT little came (when compared to the D850). That is one thing I love about it, it is light and easy to handle. Quality wise? Outstanding, great low light performance, nothing to envy the D850 even though the difference of megapixels. Thanks for your video, I am glad that there are people that give the D7200 its credit.

@@john_neil Also I can use my full frame lenses and get more focal distance. I just got a Sigma 60 -600 for my D850 and when I use it on my D7200 I can get up to 900mm, amazing. Great for wild life.

I have one and a 24-70G F2.8 zoom nikkor zoom lives on it. Fantastic camera! I also have a couple D500 cameras which I love as well. One wears a 70-200 F2.8G VR2 and the other a 105mm F1.4E. It is a shame they discontinued the 7200. 24MP and excellent build and performance...fantastic body. Epic with pro fx glass. And has a focus motor too! Great for owners of older glass. I shoot lots of low light and sports which is why I have the D500 cameras. I wish I had 2 7200 bodies as well...

Any camera in a professional photographers hands is just that.....a professional camera. Case and point...Ansel Adams. People are too focused on gear and not enough on technique. The D7200 is a fantastic camera.

I'm actually amazed at the longevity of Nikon machines. I just got a D200 not too long ago and have dubbed it "the battleship" Built like a tank and takes great shots. I use older cameras and this one rocks. My next acquisition will soon be a D7X series machine. I found out that the saying is true. Change the body but marry the glass. My lenses are taking much sharper pictures than they ever did on the D60 or the D70. I want to get one with a CMOS sensor so that I can compare performance.

The rear and front wheels, assigned as Shutter and Aperture adjustments, respectfully, have become one of my favorite things. I shoot manual, always, and being able to change those two settings so quickly without menu digging is amazing. Yes, I know about the customizable menu. Of course, the two user customizable positions are great, especially when one is set for Jpeg and the other Raw. I took my first d7200 body back to the store because it slung oil on the sensor. The replacement body does the same. A couple youtube reviewers mentioned the problem and another one talked down to us as if we're stupid. We should expect that level of mechanical device to have the problem. I wanted to see if oil is leaking in his brain. I digress. It is not feasible to clean the sensor after every session. I find that sometimes I'm cleaning the image instead. The crop sensor is nice in that it, effectively, improves telephoto. The d7200 is better than the 7100. (I like my d750.)

I have heard of that problem on some Nikon cameras. I haven't experienced it myself yet. That sounds frustrating.

Have stopped bracketing shots to blend in PS the dynamic range is so good. Now use mine with the 17-55 2.8 Dx Nikon lens (cost me less than 1/3 of the price of a new one). Have the 35mm too but not versatile enough to use. Keep it permanently on my D40X. I'm planning to buy a full frame camera (used) because I've FX lenses also. However I'll never sell my D7200 👍

Nice! I don't think I'll ever part with mine either, when it finally becomes obsolete, I think I'll keep it on the shelf as a memento of good times had. FX is still great, I have a Sony A7r for when I want to use full-frame glass. :) Cheers!

You can throw in the d7100 too. These cameras were a big step up in the dx category. At lease for portraits. 51 focus boints and the battery grip has its own selector focus switch.

Should I get this to replace the d3100? Would this be a good upgrade? Or should I save more and get a newer one? "I really do not need or want the newest and best, due to being on a budget) but being 5 years or so old? would this be a great upgrade? And would the lenses I use on my d3100 be usable on this one?

Thank you for posting. I have the 7200 and love it. I take sports pictures of the grandkids and all the parents think I'm a pro. I'm not. The 7200 makes me look great. I'm like you. I don't use it for video. If I want to take videos, I'll get a video camera or a DSLR that's good for video. I want still images.

@@john_neil there are many shooting situations in which I wish I had one, but I've been able to make do without it, I was afraid that having a crop sensor limited me but I recently got into astrophotography and the results were breathtaking. Thanks for the video and reply!
