OK, five years later, and this D7500 is still one heckuva great camera - for photographs. In 2004 I had thousands and thousands of dollars in film gear, from 18mm MF to the big 600/f4 AF. I gradually sold most everything and crabbed along with first-gen digital SLRs - with AF slower than molasses. But I recently re-entered photography at age 72. I wanted mirrorless, but the cost was just too high for me. I bought a used D7500 from KEH, Bgn grade, which was almost immaculate as happens so often with their grading system. I also bought the two new P series lenses, the 18-55 AF-P VR and the AF-P 70-300 VR, so both lenses take advantage of the fast new AF motor, plus the VR feature, though I paid extra to get the FF version of the 70-300 just to be prepared for some future upgrade possibilities. I was pleased that the D7500 still has the screw drive pin, so I can still use my great old Nikon180/f2.8 for low-light telephoto shots or even use it with a 1.5x TC. Screw drive is a feature I could not get with Mirrorless, and with the re-sale value of my 180/2.8 having gone down to just couple hundred bucks it would be a crime to not have an AF drive camera for it. So far the D7500 shines in every thing Photographic, except Live View and Video, with some surprisingly useful extra features. The Hi Key and Lo Key modes produce great shots, as do many of the Scene settings, though its AF outdoors works best with a single central AF point. It is a consumer's fun camera, not a pro tool, and because reputable dealers like Adorama, B&H, KEH and a small group of others properly evaluate, grade, and price good used examples, for regular consumers a used D7500 plus Nikon's two AF-P lenses - the cheap 18-55 VR and the more expensive full frame AF-P 70-300 f4-5.6, make a kit that will not need expansion for a long time, if at all. The D7500 is still way ahead of cameras costing two, three, even five times as much. It is convenient, too. Its pop up flash works well and works smart, unlike flashes of twenty years ago. Having a flash on-camera means you don't have to shell out $250 for a big flash, then carry it around, and fiddle with it, just to get a few shots in low light with a top-heavy shoe flash weighing you down. If you must have a big flash, the pop-up lets you set the big flash anywhere off camera, like in an umbrella, and activate it wirelessly with the pop-up. The DPreview guys were (and still are) way too much into Mirrorless and Video even five years ago when this review was made. They should stop assigning them reviews of anything that costs less than three or four or five grand, because they became too elitist, too snide about any feature left out of an affordable consumer camera. They nitpicked so much at minor details that they failed to see the good in this fine camera. Perhaps they forget that photography for most people is about taking jpgs of people, places and things that interest them, and sharing the photos with other people, not setting up a vlog studio to get rich off RU-vid, or trying to become a famous indie film maker. The articulating screen of the D7500 gets slammed for too-few dots, yet it is still perfect for checking Macro focus, even putting the camera on a rail and backing up incrementally to get a series of stacked shots. It's great for stooping over to get low-level pet pics, and anything else that calls for a level camera held below bend-over height, especially stuff that sits at ground level. With the two new AF-P lenses its AF is instantaneous, and silent; if there is something better I don't need it. Frame rate is plenty good enough, and since I m not tracking sports or fast cars I haven't had a chance to judge that. But a sports photographer who does not buy the latest and greatest camera body as judged by his peers get left behind, and won't be evaluating a D7500 anyway.

First of all, it is not a professional camera. D500 is. D7500 is aimed at enthusiast photographers really. Second, in this constant race of camera manufacturers trying to squeeze in as many features as possible, we forget about the most important thing: image quality. And IQ from d7500 is amazing, this is the best apsc sensor on the market. And that's what matters to me the most.

Yeah I agree but if you're not a wedding photographer or similar this is an awesome camera and backup body. I sold my D7200 to upgrade to this because I'm a photojournalist and don't need two card slots and never have had a card failure in 18 years knock on wood. My main camera is a D4s and I actually have two D4s bodies, but I only use both at the same time for when I'm shooting above ISO 3200. The main reason I bought and use the D7500 is to replace my Nikon 1.4x teleconverter, because DX will always best adding a teleconverter and the D7500 is only a few hundred dollars more than Nikon's TC-14E III. In most cases I'm shooting with one D4s and the D7500 with grip. Yes, you read that right this camera *WILL TAKE A VERTICAL GRIP!* Vello makes the best one and they are only about $50, I will not buy a camera without a built in or add on vertical grip and usually I would never buy a third party grip but in the case of the D7500 Nikon does not make a grip, so only option is third party. Couple things Chris messed up here, one is the D7500 while not quite as good as the D500 autofocus, I find the AF to be as good if not better than my D4s, which is saying a lot for a camera one sixth of the price! Second he said there is one, but in reality there is *no joystick!* I highly recommend the D7500 if you're on a budget and can't afford the D500, it's an amazing camera for the money and I actually only paid $500 for my D7500 but thats because I get special deals! (Can't say why or where lol)

I'm one of the few who does not hate the D7500, and in fact picked one up a month ago. I was coming from a D7000 and so far this D7500 beats the pants off the D7000 in every single way. The few features missing on it from the previous 7xxx series cams were not things I used much anyway, or at all. In my experience one of the best improvements on the D7500 is the grip. The grip depth is mentioned in most reviews but only as a mildly potential plus. The grip on my D7000 was the only thing I hated about it, even worse than my previous D90. The D7500 grip allows me a firm and secure grasp of the camera. I also frequently need to shoot at high ISO's and again the D7500 is so much better at all aspects of image rendition in this regard than the D7000. All in all this D7500 is a much more enjoyable shooting experience than anything I've used before, both in handling and image quality, and I've been an enthusiast photographer for over 40 years.

I am a Full Frame Canon 6D shooter and I have seen the low light capabilities here and there. The D7500 is SO much better in dealing with the noise in shadow areas. And although it's a APS-C sensor....I think that the newer Sony sensor in the D7500 beats most Full Frame sensors in Canon Full Frame camera's (except maybe the 5D Mark IV). Also the price at this moment of a Nikon D7500 + 18-140mm for less than 1075 Euros incl. shipping is really good (considering it has 4K recording although with 2x cropfactor). www.ebay.de/itm/Nikon-D7500-AF-S-DX-18-140mm-f-3-5-5-6G-ED-VR-Lens-Multi-Stock-in-EU-Original/162716984598?hash=item25e2b02516:g:KiQAAOSwWv5Z-2SZ

I also have a D7500 and feel that the low light capabilities, the "fine focus" for my prime lenses, the grip, the fastest processor Nikon makes, 51 focus points, uses better SD cards, has weather sealing, is a decent 20.9px, and has a built in drive motor so I can use AF on my old D lenses. Mostly this is NOT a Pro camera but rather a enthusiast Nikon camera. I think that if you are going Pro you are going to full frame sensors or to the FX bodies. I have no use for the D500 and would rather put more money into it for a D850 ... if I were to shoot weddings. But I'm an enthusiast shooter.

Seems good for me. I am an 'enthusiast', I currently have a D5100 and am looking to upgrade. I can't quite stretch the budget to a D500, nice as it is. I've never had a card failure. I like the idea of a built-in flash, just in case... The differences between the D500 and D7500 aren't deal killers for me, and the similarities are attractive. I get that Chris isn't blown away by the D7500, and that's OK. The price difference between a D500 and a D7500 would go into a new lens.
@jbtubman
@jbtubman 7 лет назад
You sound a lot like me. I had a D5300 and liked it a lot, but the small buffer and limited number of control points had become frustrations. I didn't have any old lenses that would benefit from the AI capabilities of a D7200, and I don't do commercial photography, so one card slot was fine. She Who Must Be Obeyed would not let me get a D500 (by all means, get that if you can). I bought a D7500 with the 18-140mm zoom from Larry at The Camera Store in July and I am very happy with it so far. It is one logical upgrade for D5xxx users; others might be better served by the D7200 or D500.

Jim Tubman that’s good to know. I’ve currently got a D3100. Old school. Torn between this and D500. But there would have to be a lens compromise to get the d500. It’s just too expensive to justify. The D7500 lets me invest in more glass.

The rear panel LCD is the same resolution as the one on the D7200, its just RGB rather than RGBW. Other reviewers have also said via direct comparison between the D7500 and D7200 LCDs that the former actually appears sharper! Also the body is plastic, but a plastic that incorporates carbon-fibers. With the D500 in the range for more pro oriented DX work (like the D300/D300s back in the day) the D7500 has been repositioned as a more affordable enthusiast camera, which is fine by me.

They actually have quite a bit of subscribers in regard to a camera review channel. The only reason they don't have more is because they don't spend their downtime campaigning for more subscribers. Instead, they just do the best reviews possible whenever they get a camera in. Because of this, rather than having a million subs with half of them not being true fans, they instead have a little less than a million subs, with 100% of the subscribers being true, TCSTV-loving fans.

This camera is not a 7200 replacement , think of it as a companion to the D500 like the D90 was to the D300. For me this is a way better tool than my 7200. The addition of power aperture and tilting touch screen a much better video companion. Also the new meter having highlight weighting and face recognition would help me a lot. The grip and weight loss address the carry around slightly. I have never had a grip and really no need for the second slot. My only disappointment is the price should have been less than 7200 at intro since it is a less luxurious body. The D90 was half the price of the D300.

I think it's a decent compromise if you don't want to spend D500 money and you are invested in nikon glass. Reviewers always compare to other bodies but not everyone has the time or inclination to move to a new system because at the moment it has some cool features. You should always do cross evaluation. 1. if you are buying a new camera and 2. if you have d5600/d7000 and you are considering an upgrade.

Who would buy an amateur/ethusiasts camera for profeesional work such as weddings etc? who would use crop sensor for professonal work? I've had this 6 months, it's absoluteley beautiful! amazing photos. Same sensor as D500. If you're a hobbiest like me, you'd be hard pressed to find a better camera at this price point. Sanpbridge is great, I leave Bluetooth on and it downloads to my tablet even when swithched off. Build quality is superb, don't take my word for it, just hold one. Don't need battery grip even though third party grips are availiable. Second card slot? Not fussed. If you're after a professional camera, why would you even be looking at crop sensor? If you're like me and you love photography and on a budget, the D7500 is AWSOME!

It doesn't seem to be a big upgrade on the D7100 or D7200, which sucks. So far I'm using the 7100 for events (low light and some sport photography) and it fares up quite well, specially if you pair it up with a modestly good lens (50 1.8, 85 1.8, or a fast zoom lens like a 17-50). It's a bit sad to see Nikon cannibalize on their older series lenses just to mark a difference between them. The lack of a dual slot and Ai lens compatability are real killers here.

Thank you for these reviews. Very helpful. I was a D7100 convert to Fuji for downsizing. I ended up owning ‘big’ (X-T2) and small (X-E) Fuji bodies. As my kids have gotten bigger and faster.. I am not getting the action results from the X-T2 that I like. No, I have not gone and bought a big Fuji zoom. I am not going to. I wavered between the D7500 and the D500 and ultimately went with the D7500 as it meets my needs and is not huge. In fact, the D7500 and the 35 1.8 fits in a ‘mirrorless’ bag I was given by a retailer. I JUST got the D7500 today so I am excited to give it a run with the boys. I don’t care about the single SD slot as I often unload images to my iPad. It’s a GREAT compromise of size and DSLR AF capability. .. to the Fuji cultists. I still love my Fuji and will keep my X-E2/27. Yes, I have seen the videos where the X-T2 beats/keeps up with the D500. My kids don’t run in straight lines, even into bright light. I have spent more time and effort trying to get the AF to work for me.. it is close but not there.

I think this model is to compete with 80D that has not dual card slot either and nobody complain about that. For pro that need that and grip is the D500. When D7200 released there were 3 nikon range APS-C cameras, D3xxx, D5xxx and D7xxx, now nikon has 4 ranges, D3xxx, D5xxx, D7500 and D500. I think is not fair to compare the D7500 with the D7200, as it is not fair to compare D7200 with D500. I think now people has more options to choose: D500 very high capable and D7500 less capable but still good features and lower price.

The review keeps making reference to activities and its use compared to what would be a professional camera. Its an AMATEUR camera. Discuss it appropriately. You don't compare a Diana to a 500c/m simply because they are both cameras and use 120 film and expect the Diana to stand up to the Hasselblad in photographing a wedding or a business meeting. If someone wants a professional DX camera, get a D500 for a lot more money. An amateur can do well with a D7500 and save the money for lenses or a trip.

I know a lot of Reviewers put the downers on this camera because it doesn’t have a second card slot. Anyway, it seems to be the forgotten Nikon camera, not really “Pro” and maybe too expensive for amateurs/enthusiasts. I got mine new during the Covid plague for about $800 USD and I have to say it is a fantastic camera. I’m already a Nikon shooter so I already have the glass, so that made the deal even cheaper. The images out of this thing are great and at 21MP the files are not too big either, so, HD storage is not going to break the bank. I use mine as my “workhorse” camera because it has quite a bit of shooting flexibility in terms of its feature set, not too big to hold for a hour or two, great ergonomics, lots of pics onto the card, great focussing, excellent color science and good lowlight performance. I absolutely love this camera.

They are backed up there and a secondary backup. I do NOT delete images. Once all my images are stored off the card I format the card again. Rinse/repeat. I am not ‘too’ old but have been shooting for a few decades, in lots of different camera bodies, and never had a card fail. Nowadays, the camera on our phones is so good if there is THE shot of a LIFETIME I have to have.. maybe I take it with a few bodies.

Who is this camera for? People who want a D500 but can't afford it. I could see this camera being a good fit for someone like me. I'm an amateur / enthusiast, and I like to shoot a lot of moving subjects. I'm in the Micro Four Thirds system, so it would be too expensive for me to switch all of my glass over, but I've thought this camera checks a lot of boxes for me. Sure, I'd love to have a D500, but that's really a professional or at least semipro camera at a semipro price.

Thank you for the review it was very detailed and gave me some things to consider. I am just a photo hobbyist and have been looking to upgrade my D5100 for a while now. The D7500 is a great choice. But saving for a couple extra months could mean the D500 comes into play as i already have lenses thats not the main concern. But to be fair anything out is going to be better than what i have :)

Not sure why you are comparing a pro-sumer camera with a professional camera. Why not compare it with similar pro-sumer cameras? I’m an ENG Cameraman and I wouldn’t compare my broadcast camera with a pro-sumer version.

I wish reviewers had paid more attention to the niche this camera was intended for - the amateur enthusiast looking for something more capable than a budget model, but much cheaper than a professional model, and cheaper than most mirrorless of the same quality.

Enthusiasts aren't going to shell out the cash for the D500 and your points about this camera are on point so where do we go . ? Have used the Pentax K3 II and it has some of the features you lament missing here and it is cheaper but its heavier and AF is lagging . Looking for weather resistant, video not important, lighter body , APS-C with good image quality ... sure wish I could get Fuji files to come out the way I want in LR

I need help deciding between the nikon d7500 sony a7 and a77ii. I am focusing mainly on stills and portrait photography, video isn't a huge emphasise. However if the d7500 has better image quality and performance than the others i would spend the extra money even though i don't really need 4k video.

I love my d7200. i also feel like the battery grip is a MUST with my SLR's. I personally think no only the extended battery life but also the vertical captures are soo much more comfortable to take with a battery grip. Theres nothing like doing that awkward pose trying to take a vertical image. And the dual slots i love. I feel like for the d7200 the dual slots are an amazing feature on the camera especially for its pricerange.

Frankly, as an enthusiast photographer and a former user of D7200, I don't need all these features that you are talking about. 1 card slot is ok for me - I don't do events. I don't use battery grip, I use old D lenses but I don't use manual lenses. So as a matter of fact Nikon made a rational decision given the fact it is not a pro camera.On the other hand I do need an articulating screen for macro shots and AF auto tuning feature, I need a better AF, I need a better sensor with better low light capabilities, in general I need all that at a lower price than d500. That is why we need this camera.
@Pmeyer1226
@Pmeyer1226 5 лет назад
I disagree completely, the D7500 holds its place well. If your looking at the D7500 for what it is, it’s a prosumer baby D500, which is an action camera with good low light performance. The sensor, AF, and processor are geared toward sport/wildlife. The ergonomics of the D7500 are great, and the weight of this camera makes it great to wield around, adding a grip only bogs this camera down (hold a D500 and the D7500 and you will appreciate the nimble feel of the D7500). As for Indexing older slower lens to a 8fps camera merely cripples the reason for buying this body in the first place. And oh all the whining about one slot, my god you would think the world started spinning backwards. This is a perfect camera for any parent who’s interested in photographing kids sports at a reasonable price, and still allows for extra lenses in their budget. Nikon hit the nail on the head with this camera for its market place, Thank you Nikon, don’t listen to these RU-vid wannabe experts.

I actually think D7200 is better, more megapixels, more card slot, maybe weaker low light capability, but surely offers more bangs for your buck.

Ang Li well, the D7500 have 8fps (vs 6fps), record 4k (vs 1080p), 180.000 pixels metering sensor (vs 2000 pixels), tilted touch screen (vs no tilted touch) , better performance on ISO, Expeed5 processor (vs Expeed4), better buffer... I mean, only because lack a second card slot is worst than the D7200?
@angli2794
@angli2794 7 лет назад
I admit that D7500 does have better spects at some place. But, you have to realise that D7200 is basically a D750 minus a full frame sensor. And, although D7500 do have better low light performance, still, according to DXOmark, D7200 do have got a better overall image quality. Plus, if you are a pro and in need of a backup camera body. Twin card slot is always a must since you'll be needing the redundancy.

@keithdavis2949
@keithdavis2949 День назад
First off, the D7500 has dropped way down in price since this video was made. 2nd, I want a true optical view finder, and you won't get that with a completely electronic viewfinder. 3rd, It can use F mount lenses, so all my old Nikon, Tamron, and Sigma lenses are still good to go. Lastly, the Nikon battery stills works, and offers a lot of shots and operations before you have to swap it out, and charge it. May not be the greatest and latest, but for my little hands, it's just fine for a majority of the kinds of shots I do.

18-140 is a great all round lens to start with. 16-80 would also do fine but expensive. If you don't have any glass yet it's cheaper to buy a kit, not only the body. Perhaps you can return body and change for a kit.

So i bit the bullet a got a D7500. I am disappointed with the lack of 2 memory card slots since I shoot weddings/events a few times a year. I suppose I bought it because it will only be use as a back up camera to my D750. I wasn't gonna shell out almost 2k for a D500. I haven't had a memory card failure since owning several DSLR's for over 5 yrs.. Cross my finder the D7500 will not be it.. lol. It was a debate d7500 vs D7200. I owned a D7100 and a D7200 wasn't really an upgrade. Not to mention, the D7200 is only $250 cheaper than the D7500. Now if the the d7200 had been like $500+ cheaper, I may have gone with it. Overall, the d7500 seems must much than the D7100 I owned. Better than the D610 I owned too. My d750 is still better though despite having less FPS than the d7500.
@Pmeyer1226

I fail to understand why one uses a crop sensor camera for weddings. Full frame offers better lenses for that purpose. The strength of the crop sensor is the added reach that you gain, how far does a wedding photographer ever get from his subject matter. I guess it makes sense if you shoot weddings in a sports arena, lol.

@Ildskalli 7 лет назад
Well, it depends on your use case. Low light performance, shallow DoF, and color discrimination are all better on the 35mm cameras, but the APS-C shooters are usually way more flexible and agile. I had an A7 and 6D, and neither left me impressed. I don't like the D7500, either, the world's most gimped camera. In your place I'd go for an 80D or D7200, or maybe the Sony A77II if you need more speed and less low-light performance. The Pentax KP has a great sensor but is too quirky to recommend.

D7200 is a better choice, you'll have more money for good lenses. If you are going full frame. Don't buy D610, A7 and 6D, their focusing systems are terrible. I owned a 610 before and I have friends who have A7 and 6D. Go for D750, for the much better focusing system. Or the A7 Mark II. Btw, I'm a D750 owner now and it's way better than the 610.

As always, nice video and commentary, however lacking a few details: Steve Perry and also Tom Hogan commented on 2 aspects of interest in the D7500. One is removal of the Ai indexing ring, thus some of the older lenses will not meter properly in this body. Stick to D7200 for that. Another is lack of depth of field preview. Personally I still like the D7500. It did not got good resonance in the web commentaries, but I still chose it over the D500 due to size/weight considerations. Also... I am not convinced of the future of the XQD cards. I do not want to sit on a dead end tech, think of the Memory Stick cards by Sony and several others. Of course the single card design was not necessary, as I think. Why to penny pinch on a SD reader, a commodity cheap component, and expose the camera to the web-pounding about lack of backup ability? I do not get the logic behind removal of 2nd card slot, but I also personally do not care that dramatically.
