And what else are they gonna do, send some ships ahead of the main fleet to scout and warn about possible ambushes? Ridiculous.

One of my favourite characters in ASOIAF and one the best chapters in the series. The best part is when he shows how proud he is of his granddaughter Wylla to quote; 'Did you see how brave she was? Even when I threatened to have her tongue out, she reminded me of the debt White Harbor owes to the Starks of Winterfell, a debt that can never be repaid.'

The books give the non main characters SO MUCH character and complexity and make them actually have opinions and react to events that happen.

When I was reading the books, the speech that Wylla gave, gave me goosebumps. I was lowkey upset that her own family called her a stupid girl, it’s reveled in the secret meeting Lord Manderly was so proud of her for standing up and voicing her support for the Starks. However, he did not trust her to know his true motives because they were being watched. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK BAD. “I know about the promise ... Maester Theomore, tell them! A thousand years before the Conquest, a promise was made, and oaths were sworn in the Wolf's Den before the old gods and the new. When we were sore beset and friendless, hounded from our homes and in peril of our lives, the wolves took us in and nourished us and protected us against our enemies. The city is built upon the land they gave us. In return, we swore that we should always be their men. Stark men!” -Wylla

So many of the northern lords in the books show fierce loyalty to the starks which is absent in the show. The liddles give bran food in a cave heading north, the umbers, glovers, mormonts and especially manderly are trying to put the starks back in control of the north

Poor Wendyl got a bolt through the throat before he even knew what was happening too. Given the loyalty/general badassery of their house, i can only imagine he would have put up the same kind of fight that Umber did if he hadnt have been immediately hit.

Reminds me of the Mormont women, who were unique for not only being Jorah's sister and nieces, but women who actually armored up and joined Robb. There's even a rumor that Maege (sister) isn't married and has nolong-term. (Not uncommon for the Mormont women) but mates with a bear to have her daughters who have noble surnames. Maege is one of two who Robb trusts to go up to House Reed's fort. Dacey her daughter and heir, is one of Robb's sworn shields and present at the wedding. She fends off one Frey and smashes a flag on in his face but another Frey kills her with a longaxe. Alysane her other daughter joins Stannis, intending to take out the Boltons and save fake Arya Stark.

the Manderleys, despite liking the pie a bit too much, have always been loyal and knightly. they supported Rheanyra before the Starks did and were even the regents for Aegon III.

The North Remembers is so powerful because it has a rich connection to the lore. Like, the Targaryens never really succeed into bringing their worldview to the houses of the North and the Riverlands like they did with the Lannisters or the Tyrells, only the politically facade. The Northeners are Northeners first and Westerosi second, they praise old gods, old trees, old knowledge, and if you beat them on a fight, you may think you mastered the game, but their resentment runs deep and will strike at the first show of weakness. That's why they're the most fascinating region of Westeros for me.

It's "the mummer's farce," rather than 'murmurs'. Mummer is an old English term for actor or someone putting on a performance - he means he's hiding his true intentions by playing a role.

As a man who only watched the show, I have to ask, with the book Northern lords wanting Rickon as Lord of Winterfell, how would they react to Jon being legitimized or being declared Warden/King of the North?

Robb made jon his heir and legitimized him before dying in the books and catelyn(alive in book) , edmure, great jon umber and some other lords have signed it but it was made on a assumption that bran rickon and arya are dead ,so we dont really know . But jon is seen as last son of ned stark in the north like alys karstark goes to the wall for help from jon . Maybe jon will rule north for some time till davos has done his side quest to get rickon back , after that jon may take iron throne from ageon or Dany

He wants a Stark in Winterfell with himself as king of the seven kingdoms. He likely thinks the girl with Theon is Arya Stark (she isn't) and would put her there. He has already declared his intentions to Jon, who suggests that he not march straight to Winterfell but go through Deepwood Motte and the northern mountain clans, who would give his struggle more men and a northern element to his army. The Karstarks have also contacted him, but Arnolf proved not to be trustworthy.

i watched the show for like ten years before finally deciding to read the books a few months ago. characters like glover and manderley are so much better than the bullshit the show gave us. these guys were damn near cowards who were reluctant to help snow and the north. in the books, they want nothing more than to do what they can to avenge the starks and the north, all without having to be coaxed by a little girl or anyone for that matter.
