Robert Eggers does it again. After two hits with "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse," he continues to impress with his latest film, "The Northman." The Northman stars Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor-Joy, Claes Bang, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Icelandic singer/songwriter Björk. Björk's role in The Northman is her first in many years. The Northman also reunites Robert Eggers with Anya Tayor-Joy and Willem Dafoe from their collaborations in The Witch and The Lighthouse, respectively.

SPOILERS: Amleth took so long to do the deed because he trully believed that he had to play by the rules of fate. So if he tried to kill him at any time other than when "at the gates of Hel" on top of a river of fire, it would've failed, or so he believed. He mentioned it after seeing Olga smear her period blood on his uncle face.

also with Eggers your never sure how much is real versus imagined. The sword but slipping free to jump fjolnir or during day reinforces his belief in prophecy

I think this is Eggers’ best work so far. Incredible all-around film and the cinematography is gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what he tackles next.

A someone who's done dramatic theatre on the side and especially shakespeare, I think the 5 act setup and the use of soliloquy and monologue were a great nod to the way the folktale found the most modern popularity in the story of Hamlet. I personally enjoyed it but can see why some found it a little bloated. Great video and great to hear other opinions.

As a history and mythology nerd, this movie was just perfect for me. And for the precise reasons you mention. It is like a medley of sagas and historical accounts. The only major saga trope they skipped that I can think of was the characters endlessly litigating each other at the Althing, and it is all for the better that the skipped that.

Claes bang's character weirdly likeable. Like maybe learned to be a bit better of a man and leader after losing the kingdom . Raising his 2nd son better than he raised the first but deeply loving his family. Still a warlord type and all the flaws of that time period but agree was really great to not be over the top villainous

With just a little bit of restructuring, the film could be the story of Claes Bang and Nicole Kidman's family and farm being threatened and destroyed by a horrifying figure from their past. Claes Bang could have easily been the protagonist here, which makes it a really fascinating conflict

Amleth is similar to Hamlet, you just take H and put it at the end. Also while some shots are from Iceland most of the film was shot in Ireland.

Watching it in a country where subtitles are the norm because english isn't the first language, all the none english dialogue has subtitles as well and in there its clear that *SPOILERS* for Amleth to fulfill his fate he has to slay his uncle in a fire lake. Thats why the final battle is in a volcano and why he couldn't have killed his uncle earlier in the farm, the sword itself doesn't come out of the scabbard (just googled that word sorry if it is wrong) the same night he gets it because he wouldn't be following his destiny.

I like Shakespeare and ancient / pre modern lit/ myth so I'm glad it felt like the language followed that. I like the repetition of language a bit cuz it made me think of epic poetry and how the repetition is there to help the speaker remember it for recitation

If you'd like to see more of Claes Bang, you might like him in "The Last Vermeer" (2019), where he appears alongside the likes of Guy Pearce.

Your 2nd problem can be explain by the love Ahmlet found and accordingly the possibility of having a normal family life instead of sticking to a deadly fate (and the issue of his mother upon which he is totally ignorant)
@matty_daddy

The reason he took so long to kill his uncle was because of fate, which is a big part of the movie, he felt that he would be going against fate if he just killed him right there

Liked it a lot more than the Lighthouse, which I felt was a technological wonder devoid of real story. The Northman attempts to depict the time realistically; hence I almost would've liked more visceral violence and fewer cutaways. In addition to the Lion King, the plot and execution are very similar to Conan the Barbarian, which is fine. I heard the Shakespeare-style dialog and tried to receive it as such, and overall I thought it was fine. I'm a huge fan of "Deadwood" which has an insanely literary style of dialog, so maybe I'm just used to it. Visually, I thought it was glorious, and I think people want a real "man movie" as well like this one. "Gladiator," "Braveheart," you know what I mean? Though with strong female characters as well, as those films also had. Altogether, while it left me a little cold (although SPOILER Anya Taylor's acting towards the end when Amleth leaves the boat was very moving, I thought), The Northman is a solid movie, probably with high re-watch value. But it also has be said: his physique? Jeepers creepers. How much bigger can these guys get? Thanks for sharing! I'm Aulos.Media on Twitter

SPOILERS to anyone who hasn't seen the movie. Also, great video.I also wondered why Amleth didn't just go have his revenge against Fjölnir after getting the sword, but at the same time, I figured he didn't want to just out himself and take out potential threats.

I actually found it quite disappointing. The cinematography, sound, and performances were all great; but I found the story and script extremely underwhelming, lacking, and predictable. While watching it, I found myself constantly thinking back to other Norse inspired movies and shows that managed to capture and maintain my attention a lot more, even though they aren't as technically well made.
