Why the Polaris Sportsman 1000 S is better than the Scrambler 1000 S

The 2020 Polaris Sportsman 1000 S has arrived. For the first time in years I can say if I was going to the dealer, it would be to buy the 2020 Polaris Sportsman 1000 S over the Scrambler 1000. Here’s Why…
Engine & Performance
Sitting at 55” wide, the Sportsman 1000 S has the same Prostar 1000 engine as the Scrambler while also pushing 89 hp (ironically 1 hp less than the 2019 XP 1000 model). Polaris claims this Sportsman S is built new from the ground up, with a 31% stronger chassis and a stretched wheelbase to help the front end stay light while helping the balance of the vehicle. Polaris has also upgraded the Transmission and stolen the front differential out of the ranger 1000.
Wheels & Suspension
When looking at the front of the new 2020 Sportsman your eyes are quickly drawn it its beautiful Arched A-Arms. Next to the A-Arms are Walker Evans 2.0 adjustable shocks, all giving this beast a ground clearance of 14.5”. You will also find 11.6” long travel in the front, and 14” long travel in the rear. As for the tires, its hitting the ground with 27” Duro Powergrip V2 tires on 14” rims.
Why you Should Consider the Sportsman
So why should you consider the new 2020 Sportsman 1000 S over the Scrambler S? First off, the specs are very similar. Yes, there are differences, but I argue that for almost all riders, the Sportsman 1000 S is going to have more than enough speed. Additionally, unless you are racing in the GNCC the Sportsman will probably provide you more uses, and a more comfortable experience (this is all coming from a Scrambler owner by the way).
What little you lose in speed and long-travel suspension, you make up for by have a multi-purpose machine. With the Sportsman you have racks for and storage, a trailer hitch, a winch, and an overall more capable machine, not just a speed racer. So while they are both amazing machines, if you are yet undecided I urge you to step back and ask yourself “OK, what am I truly going to use this ATV for 90+ percent of the time?”.
Hopefully, that will help you with your decision. Let me know in the comments below what your thoughts are. I hope this article gave you a little information on the 2020 Sportsman 1000 S.
As always thanks for watching, and I hope to see you on the trail!

I think people are missing the point on this thing. This is the ATV for the guy who can afford to ride a SxS, but prefers an ATV. This is an ATV that will pack the performance of a sport SxS. My buddy has a RZR and a Sportsman 850. He doesn't touch the RZR. He is going nuts for the Sportsman S. You cannot get 14.5" ground clearance and 12"/14" travel out of a 50" wide ATV. There's not enough A-arm length. The trails we ride all fit my RZR XP, so a 55" ATV will be no problem at all and He'll actually be able to hang with us without getting so beat up.

That's my whole reason for getting it, I love atvs and have driven my friends RZR and it's just not for me, I like to be able to maneuver my machine which you cant really do in a SXS and my 570 struggles being so narrow I have to ride 2 tires on the high center. Deff going with a 1000 xp s soon

Here are my thoughts if I was choosing between a sportsman 1000 or the wider S model and a scrambler 1000 1. I'd much rather have the better wheel well coverage on the sportsman over the crappy front fenders on the scrambler. I like to stay dry when riding in the winter here in Pa. Nothing worse than being wet and cold while cruising around at 45mph on a trail. 2. I personally don't jump more than 3 or 4 feet off the ground so I really would prefer the softer ride of the sportsman 1000 S 3. I really like that the sportsman has more storage space over the scrambler 4. The sportsman has more aftermarket parts avail than the scrambler 5. Sportsman are a more popular model so selling it and getting top dollar would most likely be easier than the scrambler 6. I personally would buy the sportsman 1000 s over the stock width sportsman because I really like wider quads. I don't like how utility quads want to tip over in turns much easier than sport quads. I would rather have a more stable machine even if it would be a little bit of a pain in the ass not being able to fit down every trail. Just have to find a way around them. Plus if I had kids, I'd feel more comfortable with my kids riding a wider more stable quad as well. 7. Wider stance usually equals a softer ride with the 1000 s sportsman. Although my 2013 sportsman xp 850 was pretty darn plush too. 8. Other than if your looking for a little more top speed, acceleration and the ability to jump a cpl feet higher off the ground, I see no reason to buy the scrambler 1000 over the sportsman 1000 or S. They are the same price as the S model but with less features on the bike. So actually the scrambler 1000 should be around $500.00 cheaper in my eyes. 9. One thing I don't like about the wider stance on either machine is that they will not fit in the bed of my 2015 GMC Sierra. They are too wide and it forces you to pull a trailer. And I like using an open trailer over an enclosed trailer for towing because it saves a ton of fuel on long trips. However I do get nervous as hell if my $15,000.00 quad is sitting on an open trailer in a hotel parking lot overnight even if its chained and locked to the trailer. So I always just tow with my enclosed trailer if we are riding far away and I have to spend the night in a hotel. Just sucks paying about 30% more in fuel costs pulling it. 10. So with all that being said, I'd buy the sportsman 1000 s. Its got everything to make a quad perfect. It keeps you dry, it rides super smooth, it has racks front and rear, bigger onboard storage compartments, plenty of power, large fuel tank, turning headlight, tons of suspension travel that is also adjustable front and rear, comfortable seat, more stability with the wider stance and tons of aftermarket parts available. Great machine

I wish I had a Scrambler... Truthfully, the difference is closer to 2k in price if you get the "trail" version of the XP1000 Base.. Most of that will be gone after the extended warranty which is absolutely essential on these machines.. Other than that, just the steering, diff, clutch issues and bushings made of butter to deal with 👍😎... I'd do it all again though...

@@joekearney That could be.. I upgraded to DKOFFROAD bushings.. I don't hate the price point on the S machines. It's pretty much in line with the XTP and XXC packages from CanAm.. They beefed up components and sealed the bushings so even though the price point is super high, it seems in line with the market..

I have the sportsman 1000s and its hands down the greatest I have ever owned. Ans the price may be high but I have not one regret on my purchase. It has the greatest smoothest ride hands down to anything made. And it has the capability to do anything mud and all it handles it all great!!! I am glad I was the first in the southern area to purchase it and I have no doubts about my purchase at all. Wide and all it still fits in back of my f-150 and that's a plus for me. And I dont agree with not buying it. Its hands down the best buy you can get. This is coming from a owner. Yes it's high. But you get what you pay for. Love it!!

I’m thinking about getting the Sportsman 1000S but that 970 Lbs is a concern. Does it get it and go on take off or is kinda sluggish? I may go with the scrambler but that one is so limited. Decisions, Decisions...

@@T.Webb23 the weight you won't even notice it at all because when you actually ride its nimble and very light feeling. You can flick it around like your riding a sport bike honestly. So the sportsman is a better choice then the scrambler because I have plenty of storage space and work ability and then performance mode itll slap run with or even out do the scrambler. So its the best of all worlds far as having a all around bike. The scrambler its nice. But me. I’ve had one since March of last year and it’s amazing other than the axles. I’ve already snapped 2. But as for width, down in south ga we have no public trails, it’s either mud parks, or dirt roads. So the width helps with stability while doing 4wd burnout on dirt road bridges
@dstoddard72

Seems everyone is freaking out about the quad being 55” wide? People down south in the US, even Ostacruisers up North modify their machines to such widths. It’s new and different so it will take some time. Once we get a few real world riders reviews sales will be slow. I would buy one tomorrow if I could convince the wife. This will catch on!
@NavigateOffroad

Thanks for the input, Donny. I think a lot of it depends where you live. In many States, that 5 inches means no sale. I think this could have been an amazing machine at 50 inches, at 55 it's sadly a no go for me. Plus like you said, if then people want to modify it bigger they still have that option. Not like we can modify it thinner 😆

I agree with most you are saying. But the trails are naturally getting wider because of side by sides. And because the clearance and suspension keeps increasing...... I think 55 inches wide is perfect for the stability due to the increased height. And for the extra cost, ....... by the time you lift, snorkel, buy extras,......it won’t take long to hit $2900.00. I want the 55 inches for stability and love that they also made it longer. Cheers!

I ride a 2012 Brute Force 750 in New Hampshire... It's fairly Rocky here. I think that the wider stance with the longer travel is super appealing. The brute really is a great all around bike especially on the trails. It has a respectable amount of power and handles well for what it is. It really takes a beating and is a blast to ride. But I really keep thinking about upgrading to a 1000. I really want the low end grunt of the v-twin on the renegade 1000... I like the front end to jump off the ground whenever you want it to. I've never really been a fan of Polaris but they are starting to appeal to me for many reasons other than looks badass and has a ton of power.

I love the sportsman and scrambler but not sure where these fit in. I went back to atvs because theyre smaller easier to maneuver through the woods. The rzr was too big and could just go fast in the wide open trails. That seems to be where these fall. Just go fast in open trails. The size and price point takes away from the fun of atvs. I agree, if youre going big and spending that much just get a rzr.

I know you are really dug in hard on the width thing because of the 50” trail laws. I get it. But if you ask all diehard quad riders what they want in a premium quad it will be everything the S has to offer. I just bought a new rzr s 1000. It’s my first side by side. I’ve had many quads. The reasons I bought this over a trail model is 60” vs 50”. I bought the S over an XP for towing and snow plowing and utility. Now I am no where wealthy by any means, but I see the quad S series as a premium and luxury market that I would spend the extra $$$ for. Remember the S is top shelf and demands a higher price tag. I would totally buy a S model over the XP.

Great point, James. I don't know if you would legally be able to get a trailer wide enough to fit two once you account for the trailer itself as well? I think you would need to be able to park them side ways or one behind the other. The trailer dimensions could definitely be a concern for many.

Every state is different I'm sorry, but Minnesota 102 inches is the max width for vehicles/trailers so that wouldn't work here.

Hey mate, out of every model you talked about in this vid, what would you choose for on road use? Like with a set of road tires for 95% around town use and some very short highway rides (15km or less) all 3 are street legal in my area.

I agree with pretty much everything but you already know where i stand on these new machines. I would hands down take the scrambler s.

I own the Scrambler S and will never own a under 50” wide machine. I do think the Sportsman S is the better choice though.

Looks like a great chance for Polaris to gouge John Q. Public by making an ATV appear to be a 1 seat SxS. Oh wait....they already have the RS1. Fifteen grand for an ATV? C'mon man!

$16,200 out the door was the best money I spent on an ATV. Love my Scrambler! I paid $12,000 out the door on both my Brute Force 750's. Hell I'd be all over an extra few G's adding long travels arms and comparable shocks just to match the Scrambler.

Hey is that a seat cushion on the back of your scrambler? If so where did you get it?
@NavigateOffroad
@NavigateOffroad 4 года назад
Nope, it's the standard Scrambler seat cushion. I have always been pretty happy with the standard seat on the Scrammy so I can't say I have ever looked into changing it out.

it may have a stronger chassis but with the wider stance it needs to be stronger vs the xp. so the stronger chassis is negated by the leverage of force the wider stance puts on the chassis. I have no use for a 55" wide atv. wouldnt go through any of my trails. I can see where a dune rider would love it though. I think polaris should focus on some of their shortcomings before trying to invent a new class of atv. So many things could be improved upon that go ignored by Polaris. I have a hard time believing they ride these machines at all.
