A Premier League football match has never taken place outside of the United Kingdom. But that could be about to change.
A court case in the US may have opened the doors to domestic football games being played outside their home territory.
Adam Crafton explains, illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

And that's why it will happen, particularly if Spain and Italy do it before the EPL, thereby making them the richest leagues in the world and not the EPL and then all of a sudden there's an exodus of talent from England. I know it's fashionable for fans to hate the idea, and fans will fall over themselves to express their anger as a way of proving their fandom, yet the world changes and money talks, so it will probably happen at some point.

as an american myself i’m not fully against the idea because of the way the nfl hosts a couple of games in europe. I don’t think it should be a regular thing to hold games in the states, but hosting 5-10 games a year will help grow the sport in an area where it’s not as popular, similar to what american football is doing. Sadly, it's the way all sports football included is already heading. Pepole used to say it would be good if football ( soccer), as they say, was the number one sport in America it may never be the number one sport in America, but I used to think be very careful what you wish for this was round about the time of the 1994 World Cup I thought that because as soon as you let American business men it they start to think how can we change the rules because it's all about $$$$$$$$ to them & that is all it's about. If you look what North American Sports are doing playing games globally in Europe, our clubs look at this & think we want a big slice of this action because it's a good way to milk fans ( customers ) out of money that is all it's about money lots & lots of it😢 how sad.

As much as I would love if the Premier League would come to the US (meaning I can finally watch some QUALITY FOOTBALL matches) without travelling, I think it’s very unfair for the local fans. Here in the US people are fans to these clubs more due to “trends” than the deep connection England citizens have to their city teams (their great grandparent played there, the local restaurant used to sponsor them, etc). You can’t beat sentimental value over money. Not fair for the English fans and the fans all over the world, because then you can ask, “Why the US has the luxury to watch premier league games while Africa/South America/poor middle east countries can’t?

@@nilssteinhauer9879That is heartening, but I doubt the same dynamic would benefit domestic soccer clubs here in the U.S. if the Premier League held big-ticket regular season games. I’m an English fan and not totally against having Premier League games abroad. If you look at teams like Tottenham and West Ham, very few actual local people go to the games in the stadium, it usually people from white affluence counties outside London travelling into London, or South Korean Son Groupies. Personally I don’t have sympathy for these people losing a home game of football. My issue is the USA seemed to be the country demanding this the most, when the USA doesn’t pay enough TV money to be demanding this. They play 2.7 billion over 8 years. That is less than what Asia and Africa pays for the Premier League, so for them to demand games being played in the USA, they need to paying triple the money they currently pay for their demand to be valid.

I don't think it's the same thing. The NFL was always a competition that franchises bought in on. Teams can just relocate to a new city. There's no deep history like with soccer clubs. I think a better equivalent would be if college sports started doing this. There's a lot more attachments to college teams, the history is there, the pride is there. I'm not saying NFL fans don't support their teams, but it's a different type of connection than with European soccer clubs. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. I'm not American, so my knowledge of this is limited.
@royemmer3703
@royemmer3703 Месяц назад
@@pazma1 that’s right and wrong at the same time, your right about how teams could get transferred or relocated to different cities, but that’s only some teams and those are the ones in poverty and a bad location. Like the raiders. That had everything to do with profit, but there is a lot of rich history within the nfl with a lot of teams and those teams will never move like the packers or Chicago bears. Like if you live in Green Bay where the packers are located, if you are not a packers fan you will be socially outcasted, not kidding. That’s the cities whole personality. But you are right in the college thing, can’t imagine my team playing in Europe or something😭

@@royemmer3703 They already do it with some college games - I'm not super plugged into the details but when I went to Georgia Tech I remember our team playing games in Ireland every other year or so. I think since they're a lot of people of Irish decent here they wanted some sort of event to tie the 'homeland' to the diaspora or something idk. Not that GT has many Irish ties but usually our opponent would be a school from the Northeast that would. Heh its usually a season opener too lol. Not supporting nor opposing the Prem coming here, I'm just saying in all facets of American sports it is done even the more "community focused" college level.

@@royemmer3703 Football clubs in England and Wales were built, supported and played by working class people in their local area. Many of these teams have existed since the mid to late 1800's and have intergenerational support, they've been there for the good times and the bad times. A modern example is Wrexham, the fans have supported the team since 1864 and when the team was about to go bust or couldn't pay the wages the fans took over club and raised money for it to save them and if they didn't have money, they provided volunteer support especially when they were playing in the national league. They were doing almost anything to save to their local club. And it just so happens Rob and Ryan found a club they wanted to buy and support and Wrexham happen to fit the bill. Now Wrexham is going through a juggernaut type of renaissance with ambitions to get in to the Premier League and I believe they will get there and they have fans all around the world especially the USA, but it was the local fans that kept that club going. And if Wrexham isn't the team you care for, look at Luton Town as an example.

The community shield is the most viable match to export to the US. It’s a competitive game, not a friendly like all over games during pre season, so there are actual stakes to play for. It’s also neutrally hosted, so fans in UK won’t feel cheated out of a home game. Finally, Spain & Italy are already hosting their equivalent competition abroad, England can take ideas from them such as reformatting to 2 semi finals and a final between the previous seasons Top 4 or FA Cup finalists and Top 2. This would ultimately appease the global fan market and also generate increased revenue for the English football.
@dennisgoatimer1079
@dennisgoatimer1079 Месяц назад
No we will keep it as it's thanks for the suggestion but no thanks. @theskankingpigeon965
@theskankingpigeon965 Месяц назад
Community Shield is the most viable for sure, but it's also the most pointless from a financial perspective. It's an FA competition for a start, not Premier League. All the revenue and gate receipts are distributed by the FA to charities and community projects, and so there wouldn't be a direct financial benefit to the Premier League or even to English football. I am personally fine with pimping out the top teams for one or two games to benefit community projects in this country. An alternative could be some kind of end of season All Stars match, like they have in US sports.

There were men, women, children, whole families,there was a 104 year old woman up front of the barriers!! The team arrived about 2am ,there was a party,light show, fireworks,that went on until 4am on a Sunday night. There are a few things clear up and to avoid confusion. These football teams are not franchises, they're clubs, the multiple tiers that football teams play in are not owned by a league and they can get promoted or relegated from a league and that depends on performance. If your talking about Manchester United? They're not called Manchester Reds, that's like calling the Philadelphia Eagles; the Philadelphia Eagles Birds, because Eagles fans say "Go Birds!" Now in terms of supporting a team? Well supporting Manchester United? is quite easy, they're a well established team in the EPL(English Premier League). However my suggestion is supporting a team in the EFL(English Football League) that have hopes and ambitions to get promoted into the EPL.

Sure, that Man U Vs Liverpool game will be massive, but I'm intrigued how many people will show up to Brentford Vs Fulham, or some other bottom half match. Are the clubs really going to want that long flight for give or take the same number of fans in the stadium? On the flip side, taking something like one of the league Merseyside derby games out of England would likely draw well but would be insanity and domestic suicide for the local fanbase. League games don't need to played offshore. I can almost be ok with a UCL final or something like that, as there is already precedence for a club competition cup final to be played offshore, it's a one-off game with plenty of hype leading in, and should feature at least one if not two big clubs with global appeal.
