Why the US Air Force Is Buying New F-15EX Fighter Jets

the Air Force would get two F-15EX jets in 2022, six more in 2023, and a total of 80 planes over the next five years. Separately, the 2020 budget plan includes $949 million for F-15 upgrades. The decision to buy more F-15s was made by the Pentagon's Cost and Program Evaluation office, or CAPE, and was backed by former Defense Secretary James Mattis. The Air Force has justified its intention to buy new F-15s as a method to sustain fighter capacity, despite its long-held position of investing solely in fifth-generation fighter technology, given the aging of the F-15C fleet and the slow pace of F-35 acquisitions. While the Air Force insists that purchasing F-15EXs will not reduce the need for 1,763 F-35s, history and the Air Force's own budget proposal indicate otherwise. The 2020 budget submission shows the Air Force buying 24 fewer F-35s over the next five years compared to last year’s plan.

If you ignore stealth the F15EX might be the best multi-role fighter jet in the world. It's also more affordable than some other options. Yes, stealth is important but you don't need every aircraft to have stealth. As long as you have enough of that capability within the fleet to carry out stealth missions. For example, you don't need stealth to defend Andersen Air Force Base. The F15EX with its 12 AMRAAMs at Mach 2.5 will do a better job than F35A with it's 4 AAMRAMs at Mach 1.6. But going into contested airspace to carry out a mission a F35A will outperform a F15EX. It's having the right tool for the job.
@wsm7929
@wsm7929 Год назад
@czoom51 yeah but with 8 missiles in "beast mode" it loses its stealth which is its advantage. The F35 is amazing at what it is designed for which is day one strike mission. But it is outperformed on other mission types. The US airforce needs that day-one capability so f35 is essential. But when you have an aircraft that is cheaper to buy and operate and does the job better it makes sense to have a mixed fleet. I'm sure there is a cost to having different airframes but the question is what costs more. 100% f35 fleet or a mixed fleet which is more capable overall mission types and could even cost less. That's why you have stike drones in uncontested airspace they are far more cost-effective than flying a f35 or f15. It's the right tool for the job. You would want or get a 100% f35 fleet anyway. The 6th generation fighter will arrive in the next 5-10 years so will firm part of the fleet and it will be far more advanced than f35. But the f35 will be flying for 40+ years.
@wsm7929
@wsm7929 Год назад
@christophersmith5626 I think the concept behind the NGAD fighter doesn't require lots of them. So yes, I would expect 200-400 units. However for each one they are likely to require 3-9 drones working as wingman depending on the mission. Think of the NGAD as a quarterback calling the plays. If what is promised it will make all other fighters obsolete. But even with this, you will need cheaper aircraft to perform other mission for example providing air support for troops on the ground. Which means f35 and another aircraft (f16, f15, A10 or a new one to fill the role) will be around for a long time to come.

6 can fit internally but because its internal and right next to the engine they also need to create new heat repellent paint to prevent it getting to hit in the internal bay with 6 missiles in it, they also need to develop a new rail system to store and deploy 3 missiles in each bay. This is on a to do list on a later block.

The air frame between the two platforms is also a factor.. The F15EX has roughly three times allow permitted flight hours verse the f35... so during the operational life span of the F15EX platform the USAF will retire and buy two additional F35 in comparison to the a single f15ex... Mach 2.5 equals 1918 MPH! Not 1650 MPH in the video! As an United States Air Force fighter pilot, I've had the privilege to see some of the capabilities of the new F-15EX and it will blow your mind and the guy doing this video and the rest of you out there have no idea what the new F-15EX can do and it's not a fourth generation fighter, it's a 4.5 generation fighter, with whole new radar system that is mind-boggling and I can't say more than that! So for all you jealous naysayers out there, the new F-15 will be with us for approximately another 50 years, for a grand total of 100 years and that says something about this aircraft and now you know why they're building brand new ones! The F-15 first flew on July 27th, 1972 and just celebrated it's 50th anniversary on July 27th, 2022! Unbelievable! The F-15 was purposely designed like an Indian Arrowhead to make it extremely fast and it worked! Mach 2.5 and you can thank the Indians for the F-15! 104 kills 0 losses in air-to-air combat! Incredible! No other jet fight in the world has that record and now you know why it's called the greatest air superiority fighter in the world! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Boeing and Fairchild Republic for giving me the opportunity to fly the most magnificent aircraft in the world, and that's the F-15 Eagle and A-10 Thunderbolt 2! If any of you are thinking about joining the military, look no further than the United States Air Force! Great people, great opportunities, great benefits and great pay, what more could you ask for!

The real reason why the F-15EX is being used is because it was designed to be a compliment to an F-35 to use as an extra set of eyes to improve datalink and to be used as a bombtruck while the F-35 kills fighters and SAM sites to clear a path for the F-15 to drop its freedom poles on targets. They realized that the F-35 is better suited to air dominance and denial of enemy air defense than it is at other roles, but it's maximum payload in beast mode is still better than almost any other fighter other than the F-15.

Maybe I’m just a bit thick, but I can’t see a particular reason to buy the F-15EX when it will be essentially obsolete in 5 years. Sure, I guess you could still use it for some things some of the time, but it won’t do anything the F-35 can’t. Basically, the F-15 can fulfill some of the roles the -35 can, but not all. The F-35 can do everything the EX can, and do it without the rcs. Buy the airframes that will still be relevant in 6 years.

Missions are what is fought. An aircraft going on a mission requires support. Many times the support comes from other aircraft. So when figuring out a per hour cost and comparing the two you need to add in all the other support aircraft for that mission. With that in mind 4 F-35s by themselves do what a 4.5 Gen aircraft does with a total of 24 planes. For each F-35 you need 6 other aircraft for the same mission. So your single f-15 model whatever needs 5 more other aircraft for the same mission add in the extra 5 hours for every 1 hour of the F-15, F16, F-not 35 nor 22 but all the other ones and you will see just how much cheaper it is to operate the F-35 compared to the airplane it directly replaces and also the ones no longer needed when doing this kind of mission discussed. So your cheap F-15 on a per mission bases is hugely more expensive to operate per hour than the F-35. Other benefits are airspace deconfliction (traffic jams), reduced maintenance personnel, and material for the other 20 aircraft not needed for the F 35 four man ship.

The Mig31 performance in Ukraine is probably a lot to do with this. F35s up front as a sensor platform relaying data back to missiles lobbed from high altitude Mach 2.5 F15s. Stealth and tech are extremely powerful, but there is no substitute for kinetic performance. It has all the subtlety of a howitzer, but if we regard it as aerial artillery then it makes a lot of sense. It is like asking if you need special forces or artillery crew. Special forces probably could man artillery pieces, but they are unlikely to do as good a job as dedicated personnel, even if they are objectively more talented. Stealth is wasted if you are planning on doing some of the more clever radar tricks. A datalinked F35 to distant F15 could illuminate a track with the F15 radar, and use the F35 radar to processes the signals without any active emissions. The F15 will be broadcasting it's location anyway. Stealth also has limited utility for airspace patrol. If you lose contact with an airliner you want to sent jets to it as fast as possible. Speed matters for this mission, stealth does not. I think the F35 fleet is not going to get as large as that, simply because that number is overkill for non peer threats, and the J20 will need a different aircraft to answer it.

So basically the only reason using F15EX is to house the hypersonics and pentegon didn't want to spend money to train individuals or spend the money to put engineers to load it onto the F35. As an ex Air Force guy, I think today's Air Force has its head up its butt. First they scrap the F-22 program prematurely, and invest heavily in the F-35, which in my opinion and the opinion of others, is a super expensive boondoggle and a plane whose performance as a dogfighter is severely limited. And in spite of what they're telling us about beyond visual range combat being the thing going forward, these planes will get sucked into dogfights just like the F-4 Phantom did in Vietnam (they were using the same " dogfighting is over" rationale about the Phantom too, and then it got sucked into dogfights and got its ass handed to it until modifications were made to make it more capable in that area). Then they decide that the F-35 is too expensive and not mission rate capable enough, and decide on a heavily upgraded new version of the F-15, which I at least believe still has a legitimate function for the USAF. Now they're making noises about halving the roughly 180 aircraft originally envisioned to concentrate on the F-35 again. Decide on an aircraft and buy the damn thing for crying out loud.

Plus the F-15C is outdated and the F-15E gets most of the flight hours nowadays as far as I know, and even the F-15E is becoming old so it would need a refresher. It is always good to diversify your airforce. The F-35A is currently sitting at about 77 million dollars, and one of it's main advantages over any other jet is that it can make any friendly jet around it that has datalink way deadlier and more effective than before

I disagree with the end deductions, overall. Pragmatic, non-PR based experience. I would strategically balance the order to complement F-35's with significant numbers of F-15EX's. In 'Beast-Mode' the F-35's lose their stealth 'advantage'. Resulting in Tactical non-performance. That is the design's primary purpose. On top of that, the F-35's combat endurance range is comparatively 'pitiful' in Standard Operation stealth mode, let alone in 'Beast-Mode' configuration. Where it simply depletes rather than improves. Looks good on paper. Yet combat flying is the true reality. The F-15EX can be armed with a plethora of opportune munitions. Including significant Tactical ones such as over the horizon and, purportedly, hyper-sonic. In essence, entirely beyond the F-35 Capability. Beast mode or not. F-35's hamper establishing military success in many Tactical scenarios. Not the as intended design. F-35 variants, in Standard Operations Mode configuration should be deployed in stealth tasks. That is the design's intention. For Tactical example, as primary active target and control interfacing with beyond-target-range missile hauling F-15EX's to effectively deliver consequences to assigned targets. Reality being, F-35's are not air superiority combat vehicles. They are multi role designs. Not intended for air to air dominance. But they can track like hell; and designate targets accordingly. Safely and effectively; for both crew and equipment. My contrary opinion, anyway.

As much as I dislike the F-35 and it's problems. It's the only jet worth selling. I'm with the US in not selling the F-22 to anyone, seeing as though it's too advanced. I think all US F-35 need to be consolidated into the F-35C. As for the F-15 there still isn't anything that can shoot it down easy in air to air combat. Additionally keep the F-16 in service would help tame cost. My suggestion, especially for the Airforce is to withdraw from the F-35 program and work toward replacing the F-22 or reducing it's cost.

@@Joe-rx7ht I disagree. The F-15EX doesn't require stealth due to its payload capacity. The F-35 vs the F-15 with external payloads, factor in cost and capabilities. The F-15 exceeds the F-35 in a non-stealth role, hence the reason for the F-15EX. Keep in mind the F-15 has 2x engines. The cockpit is upgraded to the 5th gen standards, it'll be able to shoot high off bore with the new helmet and targeting. It's also going to become unmanned. The F-15EX is cheaper and can carry far more munitions. We already have a shit ton of them. It'll also recieve some stealth capabilities. Is it better than the F-35? No. That's not what I'm saying. But it is better than the F-35 in it's role. The Airforce is the smartest branch, pretty sure they know better than you or I. Keep in mind that jet can carry a big ass nuke and it's a lot faster than the F-35 and has 3x the range without drop tanks. So much for being new. It might be worth mentioning that If the US airforce wanted a cost effective machine but without sacrificing state of the art equipment they could order a combination fighter design. reducing the radar cross section is something the Navy and airforce both want to stay off enemy radar, but you can't have a state of the art machine without the corresponding costs that reflect the complexity of the aircraft. You want a more stealthy aircraft, sure ok hows about another $100 million sound. When you invest to much in stealth technology it is going to get expensive the price for the first F-22 was approximately $143,000,000 per plane which went up even more due to advancing and upgrading technologies to bring the cost to $228,000,000. The cost of the F-35A and F-35C are both around $75 million while its VTOL variant the F-35B is a whopping $80 million dollars. The price tag for the new F-15EX is around $80 million dollars but it will have the capability of both the F-15C Air superiority fighter and the F-15E Strike Eagle the ground attack variant and may even have the radar reducing paint of the F-35s to help reduce its radar cross section, as well as being more cost effective to operate compared to the F-35s which is sad to say is about $42,000 per flight hour.... while the new F-15EX can be flown for about $29,000 per flight hour. All and all while the F-35 is very nice to have its much to expensive to use for anything besides its initial mission which is data gathering and first strike capability while remaining undetected even until egress, but the F-15EX will be much cheaper to use and use more often to do the nitty gritty dirty stuff that the Airforce needs done. At least until the 6th Generation air superiority fighter has been designed and built.

The JSF is still unproven against a peer level adversary. I'm from the F-15 community so am biased but the ROE for most of the F-35 trials and operational mock ups aren't available to the public. Depending on how you set them you can make a rock look as efficient as a bullet. Also, the F-35 FMC rate is very poor. If the new avionics that make this fighter so superior worked more often the FMC rates would be up. I'm going with 2 engines, 2 folks in the cockpit, and a jet that can return missing most of it's wing. On another note, I don't think the F-35 has a DEWS system, I'll bet the EX does because the E model did.
@forzaelite1248
@forzaelite1248 Год назад
The JSF hasn't had the time or opportunities to fight peer adversaries because of the relative peace times, it'd be unfair to judge it on a combat record it can't have until someone starts a fight with someone who has them. The ROE are probably gonna stay classified but as far as I'm aware it usually involves visual identification via systems or authorization by an AEWC type aircraft, and for the sensors onboard both are best in class. The F-35's FMC rate as of 2020 was 70% which is just about standard with other fighters; as I'm aware issues with Pratt Whitney's supply chain is aggravating the mission readiness number rather than problems with the jet itself. Also, the AN/ASQ-239 is an electronic warfare system stated by pilots to be Growler-like in nature and is produced by the same company that makes the DEWS for the F15. The two engine argument moreso applied when turbine engines were less reliable; at this stage they add weight, take away space for internal fuel and stores, and are more costly to maintain. It also uses lifting body aero so you'll...probably be safe missing a wing if you could call that situation safe. The F-35's systems present data such that not only does it not require two pilots, but rather integrates with other F-35s nearby to give a multi-faceted view of the airspace. Think of it as if the guy in the back was another 2 or 3 guys looking at the situation from all the angles you alone can't get. It's the reason the Air Force has been pushing so hard to get as many as they can and adapt their strategies to the next gen.

Hmmm - People expecting 6th gen pretty soon? Assume first prototype between 2025-2030. First production airframe in 2035-2040. With an average production rate comparable to F-35 of abt. 80 airframes pr. year over the first 10 years (18yr scaling up to135yr). With the aim to replace the F-15 (current inventory 1500 airframes with 460 active) and F-22 fleet (current and presumably active inventory of 182 airframes) you are looking to replace a bare minimum of 642 air superiority fighters. To be generous let´s assume serial production begins in 2035 with 18 airframes build and a yr/yr production increase of 50% , with a peak of 135/yr. That would give you abt. 2035:18, 2036:27, 2037:40, 2038:61, 2039:91, 2040:135, 2041:135, 2042:135 = a total of 642 airframes by 2042 at the very earliest.. So pretty soon, means that in 20 years the fleet will have been replenished to the status quo, with a modernized fleet. - And that´s why the US Air Force is buying F-15EX in the mean time...

The Air Force should’ve purchased the Northrop, F-23 Black Widow II back in the 1990’s during the ATF competition. The Lockheed, F-22 should’ve gone to the U.S. Navy to replace the aging F-14 Tomcat and they should’ve named the F-22, the Lightning II, just like it’s twin engine P-38 Lightning predecessor of WWII. The Navy’s F-18 Super Hornet E/F variants should’ve never been allowed to materialize. The USAF, the USMC and the USN, should all be on track to replace their lower tier F-16 Falcons, AV-8B Harriers and F-18 A/B, C/D Hornets, respectively, with the Lockheed, F-35 JSF, A, B and C variants. And the F-35 should’ve been the one named the Raptor! Also. In addition to retiring the Boeing, B-52 Stratofortress, the USAF should’ve purchased more Rockwell, B-1 Lancers, which are stealthier, faster and can carry a larger payload than the B-52. Also. More Northrop, B-2 Spirits, would’ve been nice, to be escorted by F-23 Black Widow II, stealth fighters, for deep penetration into enemy territory. But every time I see some of these frivolous acquisitions and poor pentagon decisions, Boeing always seems to be behind it. Boeing is just in it to make money and keep the assembly lines of their 3rd, 4th generation dinosaurs alive and well. Instead of stepping aside and letting the other more innovative companies give us the BEST 5th, 6th, generation fighters and bombers our tax dollars can buy us. Those who think that the F-22 Raptors can still be built need to get their heads out of the sand. The F-22 production lines and tools were destroyed/replaced to be able to build the F-35s and they can no longer be reestablished anymore. No new F-22s will ever be built. So in order to maintain the existing fleets of F-15s across the globe, the F-15EX should be ordered because it can still be used in rear-area air superiority (defensive) roles and stand-off munitions delivery missions while being led into combat by stealthy F-35s that have smart targeting and battlespace control capability. The F-35s leading a pack of F-15EXs ("bomb trucks") will be able to overwhelm, outfight, outsmart, and outlast any combination of near-peer enemy adversaries (interceptors, attack bombers, helicopters, or air defense) than just a pure F-35 or pure F-15EX sortie.

Sounds like the Air Force has no clue what it wants or needs, it obviously needs money but seems strange considering that's what the Air Force is supposed to be all about, aircraft. According to the Pentagon the F15 actually costs more not less per hour to operate, the data is public. They figured the EX would cost over $700k a year more per plane to operate compared to the F35 and the EX's actual cost is $136 million per copy, seems like a lot for a 50 year old design. The Air Force would have been better off to order a few more F22's, more expensive but you'd need fewer of them but that can't be done because the Air Force ordered the dismantling of that line.

Still would prefer Canada to buy the F-15 or even the F-18. Our pilots should have two engines for our vast northern regions. Also the flight hour cost is lower on both those vs the F-35.

Not true. General Electric is coming out with an Adaptive Cycle Engine for the F-35. That same engine will fit the new B-21 Raider.

My bet is on F-15ex . Placing all our western eggs in one basket (F-35) is a mistake. It’s unproven, expensive and riddled with flaws.

As a purely defensive weapon, the F15 is a masterpiece, even in todays world. But it doesn't really fit with US combat doctrine which is the single most important driving factor for where military investment will go in the future for all nations on the planet. The US Navy has a range problem, China develops long range precision anti ship missals, putting newer F35's farther away making stealth even more important. Beyond drone systems, the US doesn't need an expensive and visible defensive fighter. Every enemy the US might have, is already forced to contend with the US on their doorstep, not from across the planet. If the US wants to maintain that position, a defensive fighter isn't the way to go. Further expenditure in range plus stealth/speed is needed. Anything not serving the stealth capability, is a waste of money unless it's short term and ultimately facilitates stealth in the end.

I really wish The F-15EX would have incorporated Thrust Vectoring of F-15STOL/MTD aka F-15 ACTIVE Plus features of The F-15SE Silent Eagle! That'd be one amazing combination = almost F-22 ;) 👍

@@Joe-rx7ht The YF-23 didn't have Thrust Vectoring! Plus that's not how it works, The F-15EX is MUCH cheaper! We already have a superior Plane, The F-22! We need a cheaper but still advanced front line fighter! Hence The F-15EX! Lol I wasn't saying it's not an incredible Plane just wish it had thrust vectoring! Plus I'm pretty sure it has Some* features of The F-15SE!

@@Joe-rx7ht The F-15EX is more than just a missile truck! Has substantially more powerful mission computer, new cockpit displays, a digital backbone, and the Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS)-- an electronic warfare and threat identification system! With it's two F110 engines its faster and more fuel efficient than The F-15C and E variants! Lol plus it's a missile truck😆 The F-15EX is a beast!

ANG defends our own skies. Duh. They get a lot of miles put on them. That’s why the 15Cs are disintegrating mid-flight. But when needed, the ANG units go to war as well.

Upgrade f15 to the f15ex with stealth material and close bay and then yu can us the ex for light stealth or be an air superior that can diff dogfight and go if pilot needs to. And update the aviation system. To communicate with the F 35. If they can’t f35s can fly with the f15 to relay info before they reach the silent zone or yu an fight the f15 a long range missile that can hit begging the silent zonemv Because the F-15 E is the light years . ahead of other country Best jets. 8:01
