Why the Warriors' Split Action Is Impossible to Guard

The Golden State Warriors have found a large amount of success running a simple concept that's referred to as "Split Action". Their ability to read the defense, and make the correct decisions has made this play almost unguardable. This was discussed on the #mindthegame podcast, and we are going to breakdown why the action is so difficult to guard in this video.

If I had to guard this, I would just make the player in the post become an isolation player. The rockets actually did this in 2018. Obviously, it didn't work but that was the only team (THE ONLY TEAM) that took a fully healthy warriors team to a G7. Unfortunately for the rockets, the guy who they made into an isolation player in the post was Kevin Durant. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So yeah...like I said, it didn't work...but that's the best way to guard it. lol

I don’t disagree. What would you do with your 5 man if he’s on the perimeter guarding the guy throwing the ball into the post?

Full speed switch w post guy. Only counter is turn around jumper. Full speed drop and full speed deny to passer in the switch

the way it was phrased to me was the ball being below the defender causes a ton of issues. great job explaining that concept with how it creates chaos bc of how it challenges seeing man and ball.

Before GSW split action there was CHI split action where coach Kerr practiced it

actually that screening action was used in the Princeton offense before. Playing off post feeds was essential to the triangle offense that Kerr played in.

They will call “gaggle” when they want to run it, and I’m assuming they have some type of call to get into splits, but other than that - this is all just reading and reacting.

this type of play is great, but sometimes it looks like a moving screen. But they play in the NBA, which means it doesnt really matter

I would say the way you evaluate the effectiveness of a play is based on how many options there are to defend it, and how difficult those solutions are to execute consistently. What makes this play/concept so difficult is that there’s several ways to guard it and each one has major flaws in them that the warriors have exposed

Was impossible to guard. They need to replace Klay, plus Steph is old, and Draymond is not dependable

The Buddy Hield pick up was wise in my opinion. Can never replace Klay, but I think it was a good decision

@@TheFilmRoom1 you're right about that one. Buddy can shoot, and hopefully he can provide better defense than Klay. I miss the defensive presence that was pre-injury Klay

Since the Warriors didn’t even make the playoffs last year, it’s safe to say that their split-action is VERY guardable.

"When it worked" Duuuhhh teams make better defense against it over the years. 4 championships just spamming that action is no joke. There is no ultimate offense and defense with time. GSW spammed it best because they know the league has nothing to defend it before compared to now. Know when to use your best weapons, of course those organizations are not idiots.

I think you missed the point of the video. This action is what I’m explaining has the potential to be unguardable, and the warriors execution of it with the personnel they have/had proved that at the highest level of basketball for many years.
