1) Just because Auntie Em and Uncle Henry dismiss Dorothy's story as a dream doesn't mean it was (I always thought the last shot in the movie should have had the camera pull back to reveal Dorothy still wearing the ruby slippers). 2) Miss Gulch was killed by the tornado. 3) The sheriff would have been too busy dealing with the aftermath of the tornado to be bothered pursuing a dog bite claim brought by someone who was now dead.

True, it's not a dream just because her aunt and uncle dismiss the story. It's a dream because they found her unconscious in the immediate aftermath of the storm (tornadoes don't last long), and they cared for her until she woke up. She was never physically absent from the farm. I'm fine with hoping that Miss Gulch was killed by the tornado, but that fact was never mentioned in the movie (or the book, for that matter), so we can hope, but hoping doesn't make it true.

What's interesting is that the book series eventually has Dorothy and her aunt and uncle go to Oz forever and she becomes a princess, because the new ruler of Oz is a woman called Ozma who was turned into a boy called Tip for a while by the Wizard and sent to live with a witch, and in the interim between the events of the first Oz book and Dorothy returning to Oz she finds her true identity and becomes the ruler of Oz. And then Dorothy comes back and eventually lives with her. And there are other female protagonists too for various stories. It's an amazing series especially considering when it was written. I would love an Oz reboot that actually followed the books.

Emerald City is the perfect show for you then. They had tip and followed the whole rightful ruler of oz turned into a boy thing. The cinematography is great, the acting is good, and they have a few interesting takes on the books that are actually cool. I know this was more than five months ago, but I wanted to let you how happy your comment made me. I like knowing that Em and Henry are doing fine as royal chicken keepers or some such because assuring their welfare was so important that it is the primary drive of near all revellings' plot; and that the dream aspect was convinced to resolve a problem (why she didn't just stay in Oz) that would otherwise take five additional plots.

I dunno. It still seems like a pretty dumb moral to throw in at the end of a fantastical adventure. Usually, the purposes of these journeys is to show the kid growing up, learning independence and asserting their own authority. It's a metaphor for growing up, whilst also tying in with a larger metamyth. Dorothy essentially got nothing out of her journey, and it's hard to completely dispel the idea that the attitudes of the time played a role in that. Personally, I think a better ending would have been to make her stay in Oz. After all, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion all learnt that they had what they wanted all along. Dorothy even gives a speech about how home is where people care about you. She should have realised that she had people she cared about here and could have chosen to stay. Maybe rewrite the start to show how sucky the life she's escaping from is? Of course, you'd have to do away with the whole "all just a dream" thing, but honestly that's super dumb anyway.

Mahatma Coat Soren has a RU-vid channel and has featured others from Cracked on it at various times. The last I heard of O’Brian is that he is a staff writer on Last Week Tonight. The story goes that anther company bought Cracked. Realize that the video department was loosing money since the income from RU-vid didn’t cover the production costs or the salaries of the presenters. So they shut it down and fired everyone involved with the Video Department. Katie was the only one transferred to anther department, but she quit a few months later. So basically this in a dead channel. There will never be new videos uploaded and the old ones will be left up as a small source of income for the new parent company.

@alexhurlbut
@alexhurlbut 6 лет назад
To be honest, though, USA didn't enter WW1 officially until 1917. War ended in 1918. USA had more time, ramping up production at the start of WW2 before they entered it officially. At that point, they faced two front war and that required more manpower in 1941 than in 1917.

+Cordell Shackelford @7:35 he quotes Christie as saying it's a propaganda film. +Alex Hurlbut That is all true, but a movie released in August of 1939 would not be about world war 2. Germany hadn't even invaded Poland yet. It was not on anyone's mind that they might be going to war.
@pcbassoon3892
@pcbassoon3892 6 лет назад
It's sort of a weak analogy though. The US didn't enter WWII until 2 years after this movie came out. Also, I don't think a message telling children not to run away from home is a terrible one. I know Judy Garland looks like a grown woman, but she was a teenager, and the part was intended for Shirley Temple.

The whole idea that Dorothy is a heroine who is a metaphor for a modern woman unfairly relegated to being a boring housewife doesn’t work because Dorothy is A Child. In the movie she’s about 14 in the book she’s 9-10 years old. No housewife 1929 or present is going to identify with Dorothy and model their life path after her. I always thought the moral of WOZ was that sometimes your parents have to make hard decisions ( like they want to stick up for your dog that bit someone but Ms. Gulch will sue us and we’ll be out on the street) that you don’t understand but they ultimately love you and have your best interests at heart. Anyway , Ms. Gulch died in the tornado so problem solved there.

Both of Dorthy's so-called "kills" were accidents, the first one being a literal Act of God beyond her control. Thus labeling her a murderer is ludicrous.
@rowynnecrowley1689
@rowynnecrowley1689 4 года назад
But throwing water on the witch wasn't an accident. She did that on purpose. Granted, she didn't know water would kill her, but she did intend to throw it on her. Also, the whole reason they were there in the first place was to kill her. So it's still premeditated murder. If you plan to kill someone with a knife (for example) and instead, end up smashing their skull in with a cast iron skillet, that still doesn't negate the fact that you intended to kill them.

How was Wizard of Oz propaganda to get women out of the workforce after WW2 when it came out two years before America entered the war? Either I'm confused or that's a poorly thought out theory.
@kharris3352
@kharris3352 6 лет назад
It's not "propaganda." It just reflects people's attitude about women. Dorothy was the undeniable hero of the film, but it's revealed in the end that none of it ever happened. If women leave the home, bad things happen. The home is where they belong.
@klop4228
@klop4228 6 лет назад
Microfoot I think he expressed it poorly and only meant to point out a parallel between the movie and history a few years later. Also, the movie might well have been used as propaganda by people later on, whether that was the iriginal intention or not.

The whole "women doing jobs and then being forced out of them when the men came home thing" started with WWI, which was before this movie came our. It may not have been intended as propaganda but it definitely reflected societies views on women in the workforce around that time

Don't poke holes in the theory! Didn't you watch till the end and see a strong independent woman came up with this idea. So what if her time line is wrong and that sorta fucks up the whole thing, and the real raeson the studio did it was acually in the video. Christy is a mom, the hardest job in the world, and she also has a day job. She doesn't have the time for fact checking, just projection of her feelings about the patriarchal society onto beloved family classics because the hate has filled her to the point that nothing is left untouched

Return to Oz does a great job of combining books 2 and 3 of the book series into one story -- which I love because the first three novels of the lengthy series are arguably the absolute best. And yeah, it's presented as a sequel. And yeah, it's super dark. But what I love most about RtO is that it gives back Dorothy's reality -- she did actually go to Oz and have an adventure, she's not crazy, and magic is real. The Wizard of Oz is a beautiful film, but even so, it got some things wrong. Return to Oz repairs the continuity somewhat.

Well the two flaws with the argument about Toto is that there's no reason Miss Gulch could prove Toto made it back home (even if it seems most likely)... Also, I doubt Miss Gulch even had a mark (although I think she claims it did), I doubt they would KILL her dog for one nip at her ankle, without any prior issues. Especially back in those days...UNLESS, Gulch had a lot of power and influence over the town. Also, obviously the whole "murder" thing... Both times were accidental and the characters WERE terrible, even if an author wrote an alternative version of those characters about a hundred years after the original story. I mean the wicked witch literally sets the scarecrow on fire...trying to kill him. Wouldn't you defend yourself and your friends? Also, are we calling everyone who owns a home or place of business a murderer if someone dies in the building during an earthquake? That's a bit ridiculous. lol not like she had any control over a flying house. XD

He probably left it out because it's been done to death. @Norman, the theory is that Glinda used Dorothy to do her dirty work of both getting rid of the Wicked Witch of the West, and overthrowing the Wizard by proving he's a fraud, thereby leaving not one but two empty seats of power for her to step into as both the only witch standing,and an actual magical being as opposed to the fraudulent wizard. Also one of the points to this theory is that she apparently knew the slippers could send Dorothy home, but didn't tell her that until AFTER she did said witch killing and wizard overthrowing.

Wes Prang Except there is no indication that Glinda would take power- and the books don’t go that route in the sequels, either. So let me see if I’ve got this straight: in the mid to late 30s after the height of the Depression, a bunch of movie execs foresaw the escalation of the conflict in Europe that we weren’t involved in, anticipated the effect it would have on the workforce and proactively decided to stifle women from continuing to do something that basically wasn’t a thing ever before by changing a fantasy story at least 6 years in advance? I think you’re giving them waaaay too much credit...

Eric Hurtado thank you!!!! I was thinking the exact same thing!!! Did this kid not look up his dates, or does he just not know the order of numbers/years? That 1939 actually comes BEFORE, NOT AFTER 1945 (or any of the war years). When her started preaching this absolute garbage that doesn't make sense on any person's true timeline I just stopped the video right there... And then I had to check the comments to see if anybody else made this blatant realization... This narrator is crazy, oh, yeah, he's a millennial... The same thing.
@damien4197
@damien4197 4 года назад
If you're going to excoriate others over dates... perhaps do try to get your own timeline correct. Rights were only bought (Jan) 1938, filming didn't begin until (Oct) 1938... NEITHER of these is in any possible definition "mid"... which, incidentally, removes it from any immediate adjacency to the "height" of the great depression, as unfortunate as that is for your narrative... meaning, I dunno, I think by release (Aug) 1939, 1 week before the outbreak of war, the writing was pretty much on wall (Czechoslovakia having been invaded closer to the start of filming than to release). No? And, given that the experience of women in the workforce in WW1... BEFORE they successfully fought for suffrage... it was not difficult to deduce the outcome of continued German aggression in this regard. Also, the initial release didn't actually make that much money, it was the 1949 re-release that did, and they certainly could have gone back to the source ending, but, no, for... reasons?

Miss Gulch is probably dead or otherwise incapacitated, if the theme of Return to Oz is any indication. Dr. Worrley was killed in a fire, his counterpart the Knome King was posioned with a chicken egg and collapsed into rubble (he was a king of Rocks, Stone, and Earth and was made of stones.) The head nurse's counterpart was Princess Mombie, and she was imprisoned at the end of the movie in Oz, but her life was spared. The head nurse back home in Kansas? Arrested for the damage done to the patients, who were kept in the basement after. Dr. Worrley electro-shocked them and probably fried their brains. Also we DID see Miss Gulch caught in the tornado so yeah, she's soooooo dead.

I *think* the idea is that this was a "social narrative" (hopefully the right term) that was reflected both in the film's script and in real events during the following years. The American 1930s was a time when the pendulum swung back after the women's suffrage upheavals, and the idea that women would stay home seemed very tempting for most people. I haven't read it, though.

Studio execs were not sending a message to anyone to stay home, because they weren't thinking much about the US in WWII. The war had barely begun in Europe and wasn't really going strong until 1940.
